    Also, I wanna clarify a few things that I forgot to mention or don't feel that I elaborated enough on. These are the following:
    1. As I was editing this video news broke out that Blackpink's Jennie and BigBang's G-Dragon are dating and have been for a year. I haven't looked too much into that so I can't really comment on it. Also, I don't even think YG has addressed it, but Dispatch could not have timed this better when I was already halfway done editing. 🙄 In all seriousness, if they are together I wish them all the best and as I stated on my Twitter ya'll better not be using this as an excuse to take out your internalized misogyny on Jennie.
    2.I did state this in the video but in case someone didn't watch that far I'll say it again. I am aware that I did not mention LGBTQ+ relationships or idols in this video. I don't want you guys to think I ignored them. I didn't want to mention them as just a part of this big video because I feel like that topic deserves the respect of having it's own video if I or anyone else were to ever make one rather than being an aside in this video. I also wanna make it clear that I tried to not say girlfriend or boyfriend when referring to an idol's potential significant others as I never want to assume someone's sexuality or gender. Those are very important things to me as a person. I just wanna say we all better be aware of the fact that there are definitely LGBTQ+ idols out there who haven't come out yet, so if I see anybody ever being homophobic in my comments I will personally say some not so nice things to you. Not even just for idols, but for anyone. If you are being rude to another commenter simply because they are LGBTQ+ I will kick you down the nearest flight of stairs. So be nice. :)
    3. I REALLY wanna stress this because I don't think I made it clear enough in the video. I am not shaming any fans who have crushes on idols. I promise I am right in that boat with you. So, if you are someone who reads or writes fan fictions, finds an idol hot (as long as they aren't a minor), watches fan edits, or even daydreams about that idol, YOU ARE VALID IN THAT. I promise a large majority of fans have or will do that at some point. Hell, I do that. So there is no shame there. I do the same stuff. I realize that many fans find K-pop in their darkest moments and these idols help them out of that so naturally some fans catch feelings and have an attachment to these idols. I understand that and have been there myself. That is okay. My point on where the difference between what is okay and what isn't lies in fiction vs. reality. If you are at a point where you feel so possessive of an idol that you can't find happiness in the real world anymore or you purposely go leave vicious hate comments on any girl's profile that he is within a 1 mile radius of, please step back and seek help. These things are not healthy and can lead you down a dark path. Many idols themselves have said don't make us the most important thing in your lives because that should always be yourselves.
    Okay I think that covers it. Thanks for watching! Love you guys!

    Someday someone will cause a huge scandal, and it won’t be pretty. I’m not talking about a simple dating scandal, I’m saying someone will flip the fuck out because that’s what happens when you push people to their breaking point, they break. And that’s when someone consider that they don’t have anything to lose that they can turn dangerous, we already had idols who killed themselves, one day we will have an idol who will ruin everything they had including their life and career because people always end up to break free from whatever chains they have. And then it will be hard for everyone, we will all fall from a very very high place including the companies including the obsessive fans, everyone. Because repression brings rebellion, and the longer will be repression, the harder will be the rebellion.

It probably won't be a bullying scandal, but I had this in my family, the situation went on for decades and nobody wanted to end it, one day my father left us and never came back, and we're nowhere near to recover from this. There will be a time when BTS will be able to date with less backlash than we currently expect. It’s a cycle that every hugely popular bg goes through. The older they get the less the fans act crazy. BigBang’s Taeyang is one example, when he announced he was dating the majority of the fans were happy for him. It sucks that it takes this long for some fans to chill but It is going to happen :)

      With BTS their on this trajectory that no one could expect. Because if they were just a regular big K-Pop group they’d be publicly dating most likely by now and doing other projects, so sometimes this level of success has got to be stifling for them.

    If idols reveal their relationships/marriages someday after their respective group's popularity goes down I will forever support them. I'm 22 so in a couple of years I've grown more mature and can understand more of where they are in their lives + the kids who are fans of those groups today will also grow to be more mature as well. If most idols want to keep it secret and live a silent life with their wives/husbands/children after their idol-career then I can assume they are happy regardless. The sasaeng situation is difficult to discuss in this matter, however. Great video btw!!

    @katexy7179 Před 3 lety +325

    I'll be honest about what I've thought: I became a BTS fan in 2018, and immediately got hooked onto everything related to Jungkook. I noticed him immediately, and you know how it goes, once you JIMIN you can't JIMOUT. So I watched his fancams and videos about him, run Bangtan episodes etc etc. I never even thought about BTS dating anybody, like it never crossed my mind. I should've seen this as a red flag, but my stanning life kept going like that for about a year when I met another BTS fan, she was Namjoon biased. We watched some videos about past dating scandals of idols, and then one of us was like "What is BTS was dating", and both of us were confused. We didn't have any intense reactions, but we were, for a long minute, struck with the thought that these people are, indeed, people who date, excuse my language, but also pee, poo, sweat and whatnot (Idk why but toilet activities are almost always the most humanizing ones I can think of).
    So, Jungkook dating, at that point, felt really wrong in my mind. I couldn't shake my mind off of it and kept thinking about why I'm feeling this way. It didn't feel hostile, it just felt utterly wrong. I felt like I'd simply unstan and keep going with my life... As I kept discovering other groups I realized that what I was spending my time on wasn't just fun content, but I was being sold a fantasy the entire time. And I was buying it without questioning my actions whatsoever. I'd watch fun clips on instagram and youtube, guides on real-life people, theory videos, videos about someone's personality whom I've never really met, looking at their photos and praising them for their looks and wanting to be them at the same time, and wanting to befriend them as well. I don't really know what really broke it for me, but I think it was some of the clips of members crying- in particular, I was very shook by a video of Jhope crying on that award show (yeah we probably all know which one) where I started realizing how brainwashed I was being the ENTIRE time. And this isn't BTS doing this intentionally, this is the NUTSHELL of kpop. They're selling you an image of a romantically available great-looking doll who is also a great and fun person, with no problems in their sparkly life, kind towards everyone, shy when needed and blunt and flirty when needed... I failed to realize how much of an ILLUSION SELLING factory kpop is! So it took me a lot of time to "unbrainwash" (is this a word) myself from this sick illusion that kpop companies keep selling. Now I follow BTS, but I only follow their music, and occasionally I check up on other groups. I'm quick to dismiss any songs I don't like, and I don't follow any kpop content on social media, except for watching some youtube videos occasionally. At this point I feel freedom from any of this. I've distanced myself from problematic parts of kpop, as well as groups that just bring along MORE AND MORE problems into my life. Which I don't want and don't need. I'm starting to listen to music instead of watching the music (or, music videos) and tone down on other content, and I'm realizing more and more about the marketing and illusion selling in kpop.
    I do have to say, that, if you feel weird about a kpop idol dating, you should take a step back and question why you feel like this. It's okay to have feelings about the issue, but you can't just sit there and not think about why you feel the way you feel, especially when it's about a REAL LIFE PERSON, who, although a celebrity, is still a person. You do need to realize that you having any type of negative feelings about other's happiness are a result of something toxic in you that needs to be cured.

      I’m glad you ended up reflecting and rewiring how you felt about Jungkook, BTS, and Kpop as a whole. As you said, Kpop is built to drag you into this type of mindset, before coming to capitalize off all the energy and effort dedicated (and obsessed at times) fans put into these idol’s success and lives. It’s good that you’ve started filtering out groups and content you know aren’t beneficial for you and will not help you in anyway, I’m all for curating your own experience in anything. You’ve matured greatly, and it’s nice to see that you’ve come around, has made have so hope for other people who were similar to what you used to be. But there's a line, one that cannot be crossed. We have no claim over our idols. You have to be realistic. They don't know you. You're never going to have any sort of relationship with them. And even if they do is their loose and not yours, idols are replaceable. I know it sounds bad but if is not something bad like death or disease, idols can be replaced by others and its fine. Kpop fans really thinks that those people are theirs, you should look at them as entertainers or virtual friends at the most, but not romantic interest, is just really sad for yourself to really hope on people you will never meet, extremely sad, and egotistic wanting those people to stay alone, more the teenagers, we all know how hormones are and even so we are keeping those 16-25 young people at home without partner, that is hell for an active person. It is not even about kpop fans cause we all remember the Selena case, fans in general need get out of that bobble of romance they created in their head, they need help.

    As someone already commented, I'm scared by both BTS and their future/current significant others if someday their relationship become public, not just about some hateful comments online, that will be the lesser of their concerns, and they can always block or take time off social media, but I fear actions that can endanger their own lives, for example: exposing their adresses, their personal documents, actual de**h treats, and so on. Even if they would be less famous that could still happen, specially if they are part of the so called "maknae line", I don't have proper inside knowledge of the fandom, but judging about things I've read about people who do, they have the biggest amount of crazy fans, those are the ones that, unfortunately, have to be even more careful. If we compare the situation with other boybands, we could take 1D as an example, they could date when they were at their higher point in popularity, and even with that, they had to deal with the consequences due to jealousy of their fans, imagine what could happen with bts if that for most of their career they were seen as singles?
    The way they are portrayed toward the fans are also a thing to consider, the whole kpop and boygroups do take advantage of having a boyfriend image, but i feel the way BTS (as a brand not the members) act helps their fans have this crazy behaviour. The way they are marketed to armys, how they answer questions related to relationships or other stuff regarding this matter, I don't know how to properly put into words so I can properly express my opinion on this, but it feels like they enable an extreme possessiveness of their fans, in exchange of their loyalty, however
    I don't think they needed to go this far, since there were other successful groups that seemingly were more open about these topics, in the end it will probably cause irreparable damage for the boys wellbeing.

    Dating bans CANNOT exist legally however they are definitely enforced through pressure and guilt tripping by companies. Basically from my knowledge, most developed countries have laws regarding personal data and the right to a private life in relation to society/ employers (as long as they respect other right like -age consent limits)

    This video was so interesting and well written! I very much agree with what you said, and I also think that most idols are probably dating in secret. Idols shouldn't have to be public with their relationships if they don't want to, it's their personal lives and in my opinion they don't owe fans any kind of information about that. Plus, knowing the kinds of consequences it could have, it's so understable why they'd rather keep it quiet. I really appreciated what you said about LGBT+ issues and would be very interested in a video on that topic.
    PS: Your voice is very nice to listen to!

    Here's my perspective on age gaps in dating: I go more by brain development (full brain development happens around early to mid-20s), so while dating a barely-legal adult is, well, legal--if you're like 10 years older or more that feels skeazy to me, for the reason that the younger party is still neurologically underdeveloped and easily manipulated (again, just my opinion as far as the ethics side of things, yes I still understand that it's legal and in the long run my opinion doesn't really matter...) But I didn't see anything wrong with Momo and Heecheul because she's a grown woman. Biologically speaking her brain was basically fully developed. She's fully capable of making her own decisions, including romantic ones. And it's not like Heechul is some middle aged sugar daddy. He's still pretty young.

  • @MewDenise
    @MewDenise Před 2 lety +20

    I disagree on the BTS part. I think they are so big that them dating will be fine with minor backlash. They have already dropped hints to let their fans know how they feel. Like J-Hope saying he wishes to "become someone valuable to someone else. Someone who will love me." and Suga defending their fans during an interview about how ARMY will react when they start dating.

      Also the Sugas comment i think what he meant by that is that people tend to generalize ARMY as really toxic 13 y/o fangirls wich ofc is not true so theres gonna be variaty of opinions in this but somethin they may believe of us could be really different in real life, im afraid the toxic comments will be there

      @KookiesNolly Před 2 lety +5

      yeah that's how i feel too. I feel like, especially now more than in the past, a group as big as BTS will overall be fine. It won't be a career ender like it was for some other idols. I think it's important to note that they aren't like other kpop groups in the sense that in korea they are greatly appreciated by the general public, especially adults, whereas kpop idols are often c or D list celebrities that adults view as stars for teens that they don't take seriously. The general public won't loose their shit as much in my opinion as long as their partners are decent people. By general public, I mean GENERAL PUBLIC, not just knetz who are often antis, jumping on a "scandal" to attack someone. Unless there is a huge scandal with massive repercussions like the Burning sun scandal, knetz aren't often represented of the general public in korea, cause the general public often doesn't care enough about trivial kpop stuff to comment on it online.
      There will always be the toxic fans talking shit but overall, Army is sooooo huge and diverse that the people supporting the couples would have a significant voice as well. Obviously, I expect more backlash for some members rather than others because they are younger and more popular, but i don't think it would even reach the levels of Baekyun and Taeyeon, they're more likely to be viewed overall like Hyuna and Dawn. It's also worth mentionning that, bc those precedents exist, future reactions will not be the same as what we have seen so far bc idols dating is become more and more normal.

    edit: i also think it’s really upsetting that fans attack idols (the people they supposedly love) to literally the moon and back if they date. like if they really wanted there idol to “date them” they should not be hating on them or there partner (and in general they shouldn’t)

Alot of fans can learn from you. I watched some of your more recent videos and I know you said you're 20, so I guess I can relate to you a bit more and agree with most of your opinions . With how huge the fan base is now, yeah they'll get a ton of support, but there's a massive portion of the fandom that's extremely possessive & will want to cause both mental & physical harm towards their partners. After what happened with that one tattoo artist & Jungkook, there's part of me that hopes that the BTS members *never* make their relationships public.

They 100% think that he doesn't know what he's singing about, since its in English. If it was just a few fans like this, I'd shrug it off. But I've encountered so many fans that will straight up fight you for saying that he's had 'relatons' before, is insane. I really want to ask those delulus if they REALLY THINK these idols stay single for years? When they have attractive people all around them ? Yall delulu. It is so messed up that they get put under fire for dating! DATING! Idk i have better things to worry about that who they’re fucking :/
    However, my anger mostly is targeted to the companies for marketing these idols as products. They should not complain, just be lil packaged bfs/gfs for consumption. I feel like low key it also affects me mentally because I feel like low key I related to the ‘fill-in bf) comment you made. I obv stay grounded in reality but it becomes depressing knowing that no one will be able to make me feel as nice and comforted as my biases…which makes me not even try to find an actual s/o (many of my twt moots relate to this) which just leads to loneliness.
    This industry could also damage the consumer this way; i understand I should take this problem into my own hands but it is hard knowing that no one will be as nice and comforting as these idols…as sometimes their on-screen behaviour could be staged too :( (I’m not saying ALL BEHAVIOUR but we can’t kid ourselves, the companies manage the hell of how the idols act)

  • @aloha8827
    @aloha8827 Před 2 lety

    The risk of dating I really think comes at the fault of obsessive fans/sasaeng because I think even in an average sense no two people are perfect, just living their own lives but at the immediate news whether theres anything wrong or not with these individuals are just an added token to fuel their obsession when they research/stalk into their lives or people start looking in too deep and going too far such as interfering/harassing people in real life. With the news also comes the loss of their fandom because of how idols are presented to us that if they untouchable that their still ours or the sexual i action of them and belong almost to us because were fans of them. Not saying all actual fans but a lot of that behavior and intense heat/hate comes out especially when they get exposed and the image they once portrayed gets tarnish from certain fans such as getting shamed, slut-shamed, both get compared to each other like their level of fame and if they match, their personalities and old interviews will be nitpick.. It’s all to say that along with the companies, we also all play a big role in essential give idols their rights back and to protect them from ridicule of having their own private life. They endure through enough pressure and stress to keep their careers going through their intense schedule and fans happy with every performance and comebacks so once they’re off hours they should be able to participate in their own life/endeavors. I just hope for some to open up their minds even if idols are in an odder pair to hold your comments even if your not as happy. Many idols lose the interest of the fandoms but i hope that you’ll at least hold back from attacking them or to help these idols but also do it respectfully especially in protecting idols instead of creating more tension even with a more stubborn sasaeng

    I know you said you don't really follow Super Junior, and I assume not a lot of your subscribers do as well since they're kind of an older group and their fans skew older. I mean they were one of the biggest groups of their day but with these new K-pop fans who have only gotten into the genre in the last, say, five or so years, they barely look like a blip on the radar when compared to the numbers BTS are doing. But, anyway, I feel like this video and comments section are leaving a big elephant in the room unaddressed, which is Sungmin, who married in the end of 2014, just before enlisting, but has been actively boycotted since the group's big 2017 single Black Suit, which was the first post-military comeback for a LOT of their members. Black Suit era had a lot more scandals and disappointments for fans at the same time, which varied a lot in nature and culpability. It was fucking depressing to observe, as I was there and Super Junior was and still is my favorite group. I don't have or want to go into it ALL, but Sungmin still isn't involved in group comebacks and the members don't address him, because the fans are still so divided on him to this day.
    And all he did was marry an actress. That's it. Super Junior has a long, tumultuous history. They had members taking military breaks constantly for a full decade. Many scandals and lost members and car accidents and trauma. It's touched almost every member. It's crazy. And it's been almost constant since they were rookies. And they're relatively open about a lot of what they've gone through in interviews. They're one of the "realest" idol groups in several ways, especially as they've gotten older, started their own label, and gotten a lot more freedom of choice. It's kind of a breath of fresh air. But Sungmin is still just not fucking there. He's cranking out a modest solo career under LabelSJ these days and his wife has a vlog channel on CZcams which he sometimes features on. He's still officially considered a member of the group but there's so much he's missed. The last time "he" appeared on stage was in 2015 for their tenth anniversary song "Alright" as a cardboard cutout (along with Shindong, who was also in the military at the time). Seven years ago. Seven years since he's been acknowledged, without a peep on if he'll ever come back. It's sad.

    Hi ! I love your videos! But can you please put a flash warning at the beginning of your videos(esp ones with fancams that flash a lot-ex: the dreamcatcher ones around the 2/3 mark)?/gen
    Edit: Also please stop using “falling on deaf ears”! I know it may be a common phrase to you, but it’s meaning and use is very ableist. /srs

    I seriously hope that BTS does have secret families because they deserve to be happy.
    They can't even have girls in their music videos so the idea of them being in a public relationship is honestly terrifying. BTS shouldn't have to put their personal lives on hold to satisfy millions of parasocial relationships.

    Fun fact: nobody is entitled to their opinion.
    You are only entitled to what you can argue for. Period.
