Thanks for watching the video! There are a few things I wanna say:
    1. (G)-IDLE is in the thumbnail not because I am directly calling them out. I just needed a picture for the thumbnail and I felt like putting the picture of literal blackface was way too much because people might see this video on their recommended and have no desire to see blackface because it upsets them. I am aware that I could have picked any group I just picked this one because they are arguably one of the groups that have been known to do CA multiple times with multiple cultures. I mean we remember ethnic hip right? Either way know that this is no direct hate towards them. If you know my channel you know I actually really like the group and their music.
    2. The April comeback review is the next video coming out. I know it was supposed to come out first but I was in one of those moods where I had these thoughts in the video stuck in my head and I had to talk about them. But the comeback vid. is coming don't worry.

As a Black kpop stan it really makes me happy that a non black kpop stan actually cares about these kinds of things and doesn’t brush it off or try to cover it up like it’s nothing. It’s been really hard this past week (with the Enhypen situation). And it’s an extremely heartbreaking and tiring reminder how a lot of non black kpop stans just genuinely do not care for black kpop stans and their well being. I really hope you know that I genuinely really appreciate you speaking up and talking about a subject like this. So, thank you for that❤️

@@Alicia-ln3ie to sum it up, Heeseung was singing along to Love Galore by SZA and that song has the n word in like the beginning of it (which was the part Heeseung was singing). A lot of people hear him say the n word in it, some other people thought another member was singing over him and were singing the Korean word for “I” or “you. And so, black Engenes wanted an apology or at least a statement but instead of getting anything like that they were just experiencing hardcore racism and anti- blackness from non black engenes on weaverse. These people were calling black engenes monkeys, the n word with both the a and the hard r, saying stuff like “bring back black slavery” and things like “lynch the blacks” , posting pictures of black people getting lynched, and just absolutely awful stuff like that. At then end of the day though beliftlab (I think that’s their company name) came out with a statement that they would sue anyone who talks about the situation. And it really sucks because black engenes and just black kpop stans in general had to just suffer and get no type of ‘justice’ for the horrible things that was happening to them. I mean it came to the point where there was a black engene who almost took her life because of it.

I honestly thing idols should attend seminars where they learn more about cultures around the world and hear from black, Arab, latino and desi people and people from other cultures and understand our struggles and learn more about the cultures.

This is coming from a Pacific Islander/Native American and I know this is long but hear me out. It's ok to like your idols but hold them accountable when it's due. Idols are always trying to break into the western market but will still keep being ignorant and racist, like how do some idols and companies expect to get more traction and success in the western media when you can't even learn how to be a decent human being? I'm sick and tired of people defending idols ignorance and racism by bringing up random irrelevant crap (ex. being bringing up other idols or cancelling them) that has nothing to do with the problem which furthermore drives away the attention from the actual problem that's present. Not to mention, the kind of person it makes you defending a person being blatantly racist or ignorant. I do believe that people can learn from their mistakes, but if they keep doing the same crap over and over while knowing it's wrong, then I do believe that's when you need to draw the line. If idols want to learn how to stop being offensive then they can not only learn and be educated from us, but educate THEMSELVES and be willing to learn and grow to have a better understanding of what's right and what's wrong and help prevent it from happening again. This not only goes for certain idols, but for the entire Kpop industry as a whole bc we all know good and well that the Kpop industry is heavily influenced by other cultures but often fails to give credit when its due.

Honestly it is hard to be a Kpop Stan and being a POC. I find myself getting invested in groups but then they repeatedly do problematic behavior. Some situations I understand because we’re all human and we do make mistakes. Take my ult group Ateez for example. They got into some hot water a while ago during their Thanxx era their leader, Hongjoong, wore a hairstyle that had dreads and braids in it for the music video. They were called out by fans and Hongjoong and the company, KQ, immediately apologized and thanked fans for educating them and they changed his hair for all of their other performances of the song and he and none of the other members have ever worn a style similar to it again. This is the shit I’m willing to accept. If you make a mistake own up to it, apologize, and change for the better, don’t do it again. What really gets me mad is when a group repeatedly keeps appropriating cultures after being called out for it multiple times.

This was so good and in depth, thank you! I must admit I've been kinda exhausted with conversations about CA in Kpop recently, as it often seem to either be fans defending their faves to the death or people basically using it as a weapon to attack idols they dislike by making up things and then talking over the people from the culture. It was really good to listen to someone talk about this topic with the seriousness it deserves again, and I hope that moving forward there'll be more and more productive discussions, as well as the very long overdue change in the industry itself.
PS: I know that wasn't the focus, but I'm so horrified by the story you told about your school; of course I've been hearing and learning a lot about America lately, but I was genuinely shocked to hear something like that is still possible there these days.

It's always been strange to me about the concept of Culture Appropriation since people (esp. white) constantly demand others to be wary of the culture. Yet they're often not the person from that culture or the situation is not culture appropriation.
In Vietnam, my people like it a lot when foreigners wear our traditional clothing because culture is meant to be shared. Of course, we don't like it when people wear Ao dai and do inappropriate things like dirty the clothes, do provocative dances, insult it, call ownership to another country....
But overall, it's nice to have foreigners take time to prepare their hair, their clothes, their shoes to our culture (respectfully). So it's difficult for me to understand why crown braid is inclusive to black and stuff like that. Is it because black culture is heavily linked to black culture of segregation and racism?

    • @boniboni4912
      @boniboni4912 Před 2 lety +75

Yes the last part you said, the part about the hairstyles like box braids, cornrows and more is a problem because white people like to wear them as a fashion statement and then they turn around look down and discriminate black people for wearing them, they don’t let kids wear those hairstyles in school and they tell them that it doesn’t look presentable for their jobs, basically telling them their hair and their traditional hairstyles aren’t good enough or decent presentable hairstyles, while them wear them without any of the consequences black people have to deal with every day

I'm a latin girl, and I'm usually very dissapointed whenever I see the latino or Chicano culture being used as "fashion" in Kpop. I even doubt any of those idols actually knew they are appropriating latin-american culture, so I blame it mostly on the companies and the production team behind the concepts. Still, I just feel uncomfortable watching some MV's. And yes YGE, I'm mostly taking about you.
One good example of how to appreciate latin culture, is Super Junior and their productions with Reik and Leslie Grace, more over, working with producers Play-N-Skillz (who are latin-american). To me, the best way to appreciate other culture within music, is to actually work with people from that culture and learning from them.

From getting a popular hip-hop artist to rap on a track to connecting to well-known hip-hop producers for songs to taking fashion cues from the hip-hop culture.

It comes across so cheap and inauthentic to me. Like they don’t appreciate hip hop culture or the genre. They don’t want to actually incorporate it with their own culture/art. They just know that by using those aesthetics they’re being controversial in the eyes of the culture they belong to. And whenever they’re done with their brand change they can stop using those aesthetics and there’s no consequences. None of it is about appreciating artistry or history, it’s just a signifier to show others that they’re in their rebellious era. And the culture they belong to doesn’t care because deep down, they all know that it’s just pretend and their true “pure” cultural identity isn’t changed.

I may have missed if you did so i apologize, but based on the thumbnail i was SO excited to see someone finally talk about the appropriation of polynesian cultures, specifically hawaiian. They mimic many traditional hula moves (poorly and, rather insensitively) while hula dancing is a LARGE part of our culture and holds a lot of spiritual significance. During the showcase for dumdi dumdi as well, soojin gets asked to demonstrate the dance, it gets reffered to as "aloha dance" which is honestly just annoying. SUPER like your video! I just wish someone, ANYONE would talk about when hawaiian culture gets appropriated. Dont even get me started on when idols have "luau theme" "hawaii theme" vlives or whatever with plastic grass skirts and leis. Polynesian cultures always get overlooked....

There are many who are willing to listen to those who were hurt by their fave's action instead of blindly supporting them without taking the feelings of the ones who were hurt's account. I hope the companies start educating their idols since kpop is global now and if they make mistakes i would just love it if they were allowed to apologise for it instead of only the company apologising on their behalf. Cultural appropriation in the K-pop industry is a problem that happens time and time again because idols are not being held responsible for their actions. It’s embarrassing and frustrating to see these incidents trend on Twitter because it feels like no matter which idol it happens with, it inevitably happens again with a different person, causing the cycle to continue. Fans need to stop making excuses for their favorite groups and idols because it’s beyond immature at this point. It can’t be labeled as “appreciation” either, because having darker skin and being a different race when in a K-pop group causes such turmoil within the industry. Some fans have even been told that they aren’t allowed to be fans of this music because of the color of their skin and their race. Imagine how hurtful it is to be fans of these idols and to be part of fandoms where they are not welcome. That being said, thank you for talking about this issue, highlighting the videos that were made by people of color, and being transparent throughout this video.

Whenever I would say that the Make A Wish concept and era just made me uncomfortable as an arab, NCTzens were so quick to attack me and call me names and slurs. That was the first time I actually understood how people could be turned off by a group just based off the fans. It was a really horrible experience and I still don't understand why it happened. I also hate that companies think that deleting content will make the problematic things go away. Treasure is my ult group but I saw a lot of fans were upset by something Treasure did in Treasure Map. Taking these matters more seriously I think would save black kpop fans a lot of heartache, especially since a lot of these matters are swept under the rug for POC kpop fans to only know about months after they’ve emotionally invested themselves in the group. This other kid beat up the bully because he was violent towards us. I think he either got 2 weeks suspension or expelled for this. In the 80’s there was a variety show that had blackface and when the 1988 olympics came there, along with black athletes, the blackface was put on hold. Pretty sure they know what they are doing is wrong.
I’m not going to say everyone there is fully aware of black issues…..but if they want to profit off black people and market to them (many kpop fans are black), they need to mature and do their research on black issues. Same with LGBTQA+ community and even other Asian communities. Black (mixed mixed black and Korean), Filipino, Thai, Indian, and other non-east Asian nor white (mixed with Korean) auditions and most don’t make it. But if they do, they get hate for skin, hair, facial features, or other skin level “issues”; it’s honestly pathetic.
Korea, like the USA needs to pull up their undies and stop being do butthrut when they do wrong and need to learn. Kinda like Zico saying the F-slur and then he/his company said it wasn’t homophobic/about gay men, despite the lyrics address it in a obviously way to that and it had the maggot sound, not the hag sounding one. And that’s why I haven’t bought a song with him nor block b since. And if kpop doesn’t learn…they will lose money, especially with the PC world we live in today.

i think the reason they didn’t stop is because they mostly care for the Korean views not the international ones. so if the scandal (black face,CA, stereotypes) didn’t offend Korean views then they wont apologize which is the stupid thing cause at this point they should know Kpop blew up. for example, Wendy. Wendy stereotyped black people and didn’t apologize. but on the Irene situation, Irene apologized secretly cause SM wouldn’t let her. so in this case Wendy just doesn’t wanna apologize or just doesn’t care at all. Another problem, is the fact that when the situation is offensive towards another race that doesn’t mean you accept. for example, when idols disrespect desi people. if desi people don’t forgive then it is what it is. this is also including han jisung from stray kids, half of the people who accepted his apology wasn’t black at all. And thats the worse problem about it to me, if you aren’t the race that the idol disrespected you have no OPINION in the apology or anything. And also this is something i see on Tik Tok a bunch, if a black person forgave a idol who appropriated their culture they would get called a “Koon” for it. which i don’t get....cause they are also that race and they can accept the apology if they want. And including the fact when han jisung said the n word the whole kpop community was angry but when it was any other idol such as rm everyone was defending him which actually got on my nerves because yall should be treating RM the same way if so. so the whole kpop community is just confusing

We live in the age where all cultures entangle. Internet makes it easy for people of different cultures to be in the spotlight and a lot of people get interested when they see something new - is it cuisine, culture, hairstyles, clothes. It's natural for cultures to get mixed and there is no way of stopping that. It's how people "evolve" when they live in multicultural world.
The other thing is people forget to show respect to those cultures, tend to steal and claim the part of cultures as their own ideas and this is what should be condemned. If something intersests you learn about it first. Do not make fun of cultures and history.

Hi Katrina, that was a great video! I sat and listened to everything you said intensely. I got a lot to say because this is a serious subject that definitely needs to be discussed, as it affects many in the black community, especially the black kpop fans. Being a Korean myself living in the USA, I do also watch and love a ton of Kpop. I got into it by accident, lol. I've known about it for years but was always a Heavy metal, Nordic industrial, Jazz music (modern, traditional), R&B, and 80's music, go figure! Anyways, I wholeheartedly agree with you that there is a lot of cultural appropriation committed in kpop, even towards other ethnicities. I really can't explain exactly why, but do believe that it is definitely due to ignorance and being a VERY homogeneous country as you well stated, trust me I used to live in Korea for many many years. I DO understand that this is 2021 and NO ONE should be ignorant to cultural appropriation, especially when we have limitless information at our fingertips via the internet! The Korean people are VERY supportive of each other and try to defend and protect each other as much as possible, (as any race or ethnicity should) ie: the use of words and phrases such as "unnie (sister)," and "hyung (order brother)" are a couple of endearing and protective terms. What I'm trying to say is that in Korean schools, they don't teach much of American history or for that matter, American culture much at all. The kids grow up learning about Korea and the rest of the world, but don't spend as much time learning about American history, nearly as much as we do here in the states. There wouldn't be enough time in the day. It's unfortunate, as Koreans would definitely have a much better understanding of other cultures and their history. I basically went to school here in Florida from Kindergarten through high school, and learned a sh_t ton of American history. I was a goofy nerd and made basically straight A's. Wow, what a great achievement, lmao, but I digress..However, it's a damn shame that the schools here in the U.S. don't touch more on the subject of the African American plight and suffering.. ie: Slavery, "Jim Crow" euphemism, or "Black Wall Street" in Tulsa, which should have passed it's 100th year anniversary since a couple months ago I believe, a very sad story in American history, which many many kids or even adults today, do not even have the slightest clue about it unless they've heard it on TV or the internet.. I think that a ton of people are just now learning about the "Jim Crow" euphemism through research on the internet due to the I think that guy Bangchan from Stray Kids? Apparently he mimicked the caricature that Jim Crow was named after since another artist was imitating the same defaming caricature "pose," also in his song I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong please.. I did catch a video of his apology somewhere on CZcams, and do believe that he is being genuine and sincere with his apology, as he did state that he didn't know anything about the meaning behind the story, as apparently they didn't go over that in Australian schools (whether that's an excuse or not, I don't know). However, I do have to defend him on that one, as many netizens are really pissed by jumping on the bandwagon and calling him out by saying that he grew up in Australia, and that they teach that kind of history in their schools, and he should know better. Although I've just visited there and have never attended a school there, I don't believe they go over that unfortunate detail of American history, or maybe I could be wrong about Australian schools? I argue this because many many netizens, with the exception of a few, are now claiming that they know about "Jim Crow," but I know for a fact that this is total bullshit, as they are now hearing about it for the first time due to the internet and the incident with Bangchan. Anyways, although the majority of Koreans are NOT racist in any capacity (this I know from experience in Korea), they are however very ignorant or have limited knowledge of the suffering that African Americans have endured, or African culture in general! But it sure as hell doesn't excuse the BS that has been going on in kpop for years now, and up to now lately. That BS with the "black face" on past TV shows and one of the lead singers from "Beast" doing "blackface" and eating stereotypical food, was inexcusable! It's seriously embarrassing and shameful, especially since many many kpop fans and netizens are black! I myself absolutely know the feeling of racism, especially growing up here in the U.S. for the last 40 years. I've been called every name in the book, just use your imagination.. I even have experienced this much more so now over the past year, due to the Pandemic, as practically almost all Asians of every shape or form have experienced this and have been ridiculed or called racist names. I personally experienced this 11 times, twice violently.. Unfortunately, I've been keeping a sad record of it :( Believe it or not, the vast majority have been from non whites! That's the most saddest part of all :( I won't name ethnic groups, but all but 2 have been from non whites. I actually saw many of the cell phone vids at the beginning of the Pandemic on CNN last year, where many Koreans that live in NY, were viciously beaten up by non white ethnicities. Many were females being beaten up by males! How sad and deeply shameful is that?? :( Google it, you'll see the images and footage..and try the father the Southeast Asian with his 2 young sons in Texas who's faces were cut up by a non white. But again, I know that these individuals were ignorant, so I don't hold any grudges anymore.. You also touched on an extremely deep and meaningful subject about the Japanese occupation and systematic destruction of our Korean culture, along with our people, where millions of Koreans were killed during the entire 35 year occupation.. Google that one, which you've already done a great job researching and touching on the subject so far in your video. Even my grandfather whom I've never met, was killed in Okinawa fighting for the Japanese, and my grandmother whom I've never met either, died as a "Comfort Women" for the Japanese soldiers. Unfortunately, they don't teach much about it in American schools, I don't even remember them touching on the subject at all.. But again, I love the Japanese people very very much, as the younger generation have learned from it, and many Japanese live in Korea and have mixed with Koreans over the past many decades. Now going back to the very sensitive subject at hand, I do wish very much that these idiotic and inexcusable production companies, as well as the artists themselves, would STOP doing this stupid ass Bullsh_t! As it hurts all of us at the end of the day.. I do believe like you do, that they can change, and they can make up for this shameful period in kpop. They just need to own up to it, and make amends with the community, especially to their black kpop fans.. I have no idea what the future will bring, but let's find out.. Thanks for the great and informative video!

I really love this video, and congrats for making it so good! However, I would like to give you some constructive criticism, if you don't mind.
I think the topic of your essay was a bit too broad, and because of it, you touched upon a lot of things, but it feels like most of it was a bit too surface level. I think it would have been better to stick to 1 instance of cultural appropriation (kpop in the 90s, black hairstyles, blackface, apologies, fans' racism, white fans crying wolf), and discuss that one topic in more detail for 20-30 minutes. You would have had time, for example, to show us actual examples of blackface, or articles about black kids being sent home for hairstyles that idols can wear.
It would also be a great series! All these examples in this video that you made, it would be so interesting to discuss them separately in videos, with actual examples of the history of black people, how they are discriminated against to this day while idols are forgiven for appropriation.
I really hope this concrit found you at a good time, and that I didn't offend. It's really great that there are videos out there like this one that explain this phenomenon. I am eastern europen, and let me tell you, my white countrymen do NOT understand CA, and they will defend their idols to the death, attacking POC. It's so offensive and shitty, and I'm happy that there's sources I can link them when I want them to stfu.

This is so incredibly well thought-out that I don't really have anything to add. What i do want to say is that the "they didn't know" excuse is just that, an excuse and a bad one at that. We are not so ignorant to the world and discrimination that we don't know when something is offensive because as soon as it's directed toward Koreans our understanding all of a sudden peaks. No. The real issue is, like you said, there's no real backlash to thinking this way or expressing these things and when idols have thousands of people defending their behavior they feel justified. I wouldn't excuse someone wear hanbok abd speaking broken "engrish" or pulling their eyes back just because they haven't lived around Asians because it's common sense that judging an entire people off a few is not only ignorant but stupid. I see how Asians are often portrayed in western media and know how untrue it is so why would I believe they're portraying another group of people completely accurately. I'm also aware that skin color is just that and has nothing to do with a person's behavior or who they are. We are all human. These excuses may work with small children but no one over the age of probably 12 has an excuse ESPECIALLY adult idols who know they are on a global platform with fans from all over the world. Again, i thank you for this. It very much needed to be said and your understanding is so refreshing
