  • How to check vintage Johnson Evinrude OMC outboard ignition coils to see if they are functioning.
In order to properly test the coil, you need to remove it from the ignition plate.
The secondary winding should have between 3000 ohms to 8000 ohms resistance. The primary winding should have continuity.

Sierra coils and Chinese coils, BOTH are Chinese, on ebay read as high as 12 or 13 ...I use them all the time with no problems.

The √ one to get the primary winding down to earth and environmental engineering and the secondary containment winding bilingualism evinrude, proffered by company Johnson 3000,000,000 square route 6 divided ÷ by the answer, and add +3.00. Prestigious and overall. And conductor Will give a strong value .99π

Hi there, l have a 2 hp Suzuki that is like a new engine, never really used from 89. I just bought it. lt looks like it has an ignition problem. No spark. ....its getting fuel to the carb, but totally no spark. disconnected the stop switch, just in case the fault lied there. No, go. l am scared to start tearing into it. Do you think l need to look at the magneto, points? where the HV wire goes to. l am scared to take apart the pull cord in case its spring-loaded or something. And if l have to take off the flywheel, have l then fucked up the timing. l really am scared to get over my ability but at the same time do not want to pay for a mechanic to look at it. because it will then not be a good buy. Any advice appreciated.

just got my new coil and when I check the secondary winding on my multimeter it reads 10000 kohms. is it still acceptable.

You need a setting that exceeds the upper limit want to read

ive turned my multimeter to 20k to check continuity (from spike to primary and from spike to ground). It shows me 10.55. is that wrong resistance? I've got these coils from Sierra for my 3HP Evinrude.

@@thisoldoutboard thank you so much sir. Another question I had was... I have two spark plugs. Does it matter which coil goes to which spark plug?

Is there an upper limit? I bought 2 NEW sierra coils and the both test 12 on secondary. No where can you find info on LIMITS or if there is one.

"A potentially "good" reading for the secondary winding is in the range of 3000 to 8000 ohms."

Mark Weaver I don't know if 12 is too high. Like you said I can't find a good reference on what is too high. I also can't find a good reference detailing how the resistance pertains to the performance of the coil. I'm still looking but so far I don't have an answe

Sorry but this test will NOT show up some problems. Not moisture, or hv leakage, or shorted primary turns. In these coils you could likely short the entire primary, and the resistance is so low you would not see the difference.

I wish that I could see what you were doing but your hands were in the way. I could see the meter but that was not very beneficial.
