- In this video, we break down the complete timeline of the Three Body Problem series. Keep in mind that this is just a timeline to provide perspective; for a more detailed breakdown of these events, check out the Three-Body Problem playlist linked in the description. The Three Body Problem series, aka the Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy, tells the story of humanity over the course of our existence in the cosmos. The series starts in the modern era and spans out to the end of time. Many significant events also take place before the opening of the story.
We Begin in the common era, which is any time up until the year 2010, all dates in the common era are marked with the epoch “CE” During the common era humankind remained ignorant of the true nature of the cosmos, and on the true nature of what waited even within as short a distance as four lightyears from our solar system.

Timeline correction. Ye Wenjie's first signal is trasmitted in 1971, but the response from Trisolaris is not heard until 1979, that same year Ye Wenjie responds. Thanks everyone that pointed out that FTL drives aren't technically a thing in the series. It would be more accurate to refer to their drives as curvature propulsion engines.
I feel like something went wrong with the edit around 7:40 ?
"Thanks for getting my wife addicted to..."
That's a rarely spoken sentence.
Totally got that FTL = Curvature propulsion. And really, Curvature propulsion results in FTL travel so you're not at all wrong either. Kind of like calling an iPhone a phone.
It serves the same purposes. That's literally what is used in Stat Trek. The warp field bends space and it's the space around the ship, not the ship itself, that travels faster than light. Technically, the Enterprise isn't actually moving when through space when it hit the warp drive.
(i am about to start reading #3).
Isn't that the Alcubier drive you are all talking about?
You’re a life changer Quinn. I’m not being hyperbolic, you literally changed my life. Your videos is what really pushed me into start reading fiction regularly, thus opening up so many wonderful worlds and ideas for me. Some of the books I’ve read have made a lasting impact. I’m an avid reader now, which has bettered my overall concentration, discipline and confidence. Bless you Quinn! You’re doing great work!
@cedricsankara9809 may I recommend Iain Banks ‘The Culture’ series of books. I would argue they are more iconic and definitively not as dark as this series which was rather abrasive to the psyche.
Quinn and Max Derrant are this generation's Lavaar Burton and Bob Ross
I got a half truths fictional book no one cares about but is probably the most important book out there “The Celestine prophecy”
Goes into rainbow body, monks, Chinese military suppressing monks and working deltec trying to harness energy from the 4th dimension. Talks about us evolving to 4th dimensional beings.
A life changer? Let's not exaggerate, he has a good channel but it's not life changing

Every time I think about this series I catch myself thinking "Where did Liu get the knowledge in so many fields to create such a totally fleshed out and realistic story about future of humanity?"

single handedly made this series popular is a big stretch lmfao
sure! they filmed an entire season in about 2 days!

How do you feel about the up coming Netflix show?
@@jefferyfrierson3434 they will probably screw it up because that's what happens when you try to turn a book into a movie some souls are incapable of writing master pieces.

Finally more Three Body content Quinn! FINALLY!!!
Im sure he will be doing stuff when the Netflix show comes out. but hes already done so much I wonder how much more there is to do. After I finished the books and looked on youtube for discussion of them, his channel was top of the list.
Nothing wrong with going over and analysing the content, much like GoT wasn’t accurate to the entirety of the storyline, it would be refreshing to see the GoT show creators get it right this time to the original plot line and Quinn can hold them accountable for a start 👍

Your videos made me buy and read the whole trilogy, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Same here; revitalized my love of science-fiction, as well!
You seriously make the most articulate videos out there. Such a pleasure to watch!

YES I LOVE WHEN YOU POST!!!! and your breakdowns are the best
I started the 3 body problem book series thanks to you! That's a great video for a summary!
Also 3 videos in 2 days, I love it!
what i find interesting is the themes of collectivism vs individualism. as the first book starts during communist china and the clashing ideoogies of the cold war, that's an underlying aspect. how humans function as a collective vs actions taken by individuals. humanity was doomed by a single individual, then saved by a single individual (the wallfacer), then undone by the collective. cooperation is necessarity to fight back but also hinders salvation of only a partial group. it takes this social study and applies it to the wider universe. the dark forest hypothesis works for a collective, but there will be individuals who break out of that mold and with their single action shape the future
Humans are bred to follow leaders. Groomed from birth socially. Especially males. We love our heroes essentially.
Chaos is the problem.
A Technical Anarchy is the solution.
It requires most humans to be smart enough to insist on a decent AI to rule the Earth. Humans aren't capable. We're too parochial and tribal. In our DNA to fight over stuff.
Inevitable. Should hurry it along.
On the note of collectivism vs individualism. Its also important to point out how this was portrayed in the Trisolaran civilization. Their entire world was working as a single collective. But that too was not the way, as told by Listener 1379 who said that they worked like drones and had nothing to look forward to, no art, no love, no nothing. Just one goal of advancement to ensure survival. The Listener 1379 was also single handedly responsible for trying to save the entireity of the human race before Ye Wenjie decides to go against his actions and doom the human race.
Just realised ive been subscribed to you for like 5 years. What an awesome channel. Your passion for fiction is inspiring Quinn! Loved the ASOIAF content, i was way more into that than scifi.. yet the last few years of your channel have really opened my eyes to how much great scifi is out there, this series in particular
Endless thanks! Its about time i gave you some money on Patreon❤
Always so excited to see more videos from you man! Hope you're well brother!
I am always excited to see you post a new video. Thanks for all the great content and keep up the hard work!
I stumbled across this channel about a year ago while consuming Dune content. Watched your series on the cixin liu books and was immediately interested. As of right now I’m on the final 10-12 pages of Deaths End and I can’t thank you enough for bringing this book into my periphery. I can’t wait for the Netflix adaptation and ive been promoting this series to any and everyone that will listen lol. Going to come back and watch this video after I finish these final pages… unless a dimension strike hits first 😅
Ive read alot of sci-fi, but this series captured me in a way Ive been chasing since.
So glad that its getting so much attention.
This is why kids shouldn't talk to strangers.
I really appreciate your videos on this series and usually add the different books you cover to my "must read" list.
I've gotten some coworkers hooked on your series too! Love your content!
I've really enjoyed your videos on the Three Body Problem, man. Nearly watched them all now :)
Wow! I've read all the books few years ago but seeing the timeline explained this structured makes it again clear what a genius Cixiu Liu is and what immense world building was done in the Three Body Problem. Thanks for your work Quinn!
Hello! I'm from Morocco and found out about this book trilogy from this channel about 3 months ago. I got addicted to it and bought the trilogy, watched the Chinese series, Netflix series, and I'm waiting for the upcoming season. All of that thanks to this brilliant man, Quinn. You truly deserve millions of subs, but unfortunately, nowadays, the audience is mostly attracted to low-intelligence material.👌
watched some fiction and already be a scientist huh? wake the fk up
Honestly, you're the reason I even know of these books, and I thank you! I'm very excited to watch both of the adaptations of it. I came originally because of Dune lore and I stay because I love how passionate you are about your subjects. I've always been an avid reader, but recently I went quite a while without. You motivated me to pick books back up. I don't have a lot of friends that love sci-fi quite like I do (they're all a bit more into fantasy, which I also love), and your videos really do fill a bit of that need I have to consume lore and think philosophically about different series I love. I'm really hoping to be able to read some of your works soon as well!
OK - This is a LOT crazier than the first season even lets on. This is a huge amount of time.
Lol yep. Welcome to hard sci-fi
@@spartaleonidas641 it’ll be interesting to see if Netflix has 18m years in them 😂
It kind of does let it one when it was mentioned “the future is allot closer than it used to be”!
Outstanding! Really well put together and must have taken ages! Thank you. Really excited to see Netflix grapple with some of the things in this series. That droplet attack and the dimensional tombs etc should be astoundingly awe inspiring.
I had heard of the Three Body Problem series and was trying to find summaries on it, and this channel is what pushed me to finally buying and reading all three books. Just finished Death’s End a couple days ago and idk what to do with myself. Like I’m laying here staring at my ceiling, wondering how I’ll find another book or series with such a beautifully insane sci-fi theme🧍🏻
I just wanna share how much I appreciate this channel though, and I’ll probably read things recommended by Quinn :3
He also has a very soothing voice. This channel deserves more love ❤❤❤❤
xeelee series might be another for you
Welcome to the club, friend 😅
I enjoyed Project Hail Mary after the 3body trilogy, the tone is a bit less serious almost comical, but the plot is great plus I liked the ending better than Death’s end
After Death's End, you still have another one to read from the series. It's the Redemption of Time, was written by Baoshu by has been approved by Cixin Liu and it's a good read that continues/expands the story of the Three Body Problem series. :)
@@maz7817 I’ve been so wary of it because a lot of people seemed to not like it? I haven’t been sure of whether I’d like it or not but I probably do need to at least give it a try.
Man these videos are so cool and entertaining. Can’t wait to see how many views land when the show drops of Netflix! You deserve it all.
I can tell you spend slot of time on these videos based on the quality. Keep up the great work!
You’re the reason I’m now addicted to the Remembrance of Earths Past series…thank you Quinn 🙏🏾
Been a Dune Dude for a while but when I watched your video on The Teardrop incident from The Dark Forest, it not only inspired me to read the series, but also finish up my own Scifi short novel.
It’s regarding the future of humanity now ina. Dystopian state due to the extreme and unpredictable expansion of Nanotechnology. Wish I could talk about it more on a podcast with you, maybe one day!
Anyways, thank you so much for bringing more of this series in a digestible format to the public as well as just making cool shit in general 😊
You’re gonna make me read these all over again!
Love your content and your way of delivery. Mind uploading a single long combined video of all the breakdowns of this. So we can listen to it like a story as we struggle to fall asleep? Could just be me though.
I need another long format of this series. Good stuff
Who else thinks this nine minutes of content will be better than what Netflix gives us?
I can guarantee it
I agree because of Dan and Dave’s involvement with this masterwork. They destroyed GOT as they had no completed work to adapt. My hope is that they won’t with this as their adaptation of what is complete is good, it when then have only rough sketch that the problems begin.
@@safiyahnoorpage7206 I dunno. The trailer I saw made it look like Sam the Everyman saves the world by playing video games.
I don't have much hope for anything Netflix has their stamp on.
@@safiyahnoorpage7206True. when the material is there they do great work but fuck me if they have to use there own brain.
im still worried that it might be another woke crap, dividing too far from the books.
but still im a bit hyped. its one of the best sience fiction book series out there
Well can't be much worse than the books. Barely finished Dark Forest with how awful the writing was lol.
Pacing and context are amazing things. If I through away all my knowledge of the series and listened to this in a vacuum, I get the same strange feeling of disconnect that I often feel in some works that I was so bewildered with to the point I wasn't able to finish. When I enjoy something, end up going out of my way to gain more context to deepen(? or enrich) that enjoyment; it's actually why I love channels like this and supplemental content like this.
Man...I love your channel! Thank you so much ❤
I served 3 years managing a section supporting the MM III missile fields in North Dakota. The power and purpose of what we were a part of was driven home every day in many ways. I have not seen a better or more creative explanation of that power, purpose, and for the possible consequences for failure than how it was depicted in this science fiction story, Remembrance of Earth’s Past. Deterrence through mutually assured destruction is an almost irrevocable compact and once instituted cannot be revoked without catastrophic consequences of one form or another.
Finally, i was saving your videos for so long.
I justo finished the trilogy and i love this video
I'm always excited to see a new Quinn's Ideas video. Every video is fascinating and shows me an aspect or detail of a book that I didn't catch when I read it. I'd love to see you do some collaboration videos with Media Death Cult. The two of you are my favorite sci-fi channels.
Subscribed. How amazingly crafted content. You are a so gifted. Thank you!
Love your TBP content Quinn! Thanks for the video.
So much of this I'd totally forgotten about! Nice recap.
You’re the reason I’ve been hooked on the three body problem series as well as the tv show on Amazon prime 😅 thank you
What tv show?
Awesome, I finished the series last month, always appreciate your videos on the series. I started reading it because of you, incredible and thought provoking stuff. what i find interesting is that the android is called Sophon in the english translation, but in my German translation it’s called Tomoko, imo it makes more sense because she wears a kimono and the dual reading of the chinese characters used for sophon and the japanese name tomoko was already mentioned
Absolutely great videos . I got to know about your channel from another channel “heavy spoilers” while searching for videos on 3 body problem and I must admit I’m completely hooked to your channel now.
This is still my favorite series. After this comes Dune and then Hyperion and then Foundation! 😂
Love your content man
I read these books because of you. Can’t thank you enough!
I continued reading Cixin Liu's other books after that... the Supernova Era, of Ants and Dinosaurs, Ball Lightning, they are all great.
Just finished this series last week, great reads
I've just discovered your channel and have been binge-watching your content, fantastic!
Awesome break down!
Awesome! and Three Body Problem 4 books are absolutely amazing!

Great breakdown.
Fantastic content as always. For the algorithm!
Been looking around for somebody to.. encapsulate this in one digestible episode. Thank you
Awesome Video Quinn!
I really want to thank you for opening my eyes to this kind of science fiction it really opened my eyes. Threw body problem is my favorite book of all time and have started sparrow which is starting off great!
Great video. I just learned that the Three Body Problem series isn't a story - it's an investment of time. Probably worth it, when I find more of it.
I just finished Death's End. I have to say, I probably wouldn't have checked out Three-Body if not for you, but at the same time, I spoilered the entire series by watching all your videos on it. So thanks? 😅 What a ride, though.
I still have 200 pages remaining in the last part so stopped watching when you reached Broadcast era 8 at 5:55, Still at the part where Cheng Xin and AA have almost deciphered Tianmings tales! This is already my fav book series!! Absolutely loving it! Never been so excited for a book.
keep up the great work dude!
:-)
This channel first introduced me to Three Body Problem. I read the trilogy last year and I have the fan fiction book but haven't dove into that yet. Can't wait for the show. I hope it does well
A small error, at the beginning of the Galaxy Era section it is stated that an FTL ship is used. This is not the case, the curvature propulsion drive is still bound to be slower than light, the time dilation that caused the ~400 year journey to be compressed to days ship-time occurred due to special relativity and traveling extremely close to, but not exceeding, the speed of light.
Whooo. 3 body problem. I started the books, my 13yr old was able to borrow the book from school library. He's a sub to your channel too. One of my favorite subjects to learn, talk about before sleep.
Ye Wenjie is technically responsible for the Trisolarin events - but the novel takes a lot of care to construct her reasons for doing so - which come down to the inhumanity of the Cultural Revolution and the oppressive regime which followed, and still exists to this day in China. I really found it astounding when reading this book for the first time (english translation) that it had made it out of China, given how clearly critical it is of both recent Chinese history, and current Chinese ideology. The brilliance of the series for me is that Cheng Xin is the absolute opposite of Ye Wenjie - she still believes in humanity - yet that also leads to humanity's downfall. The message I found was we always must follow the course of balance.
Cheng Xin is more of a villain that Ye Wenjie.
Instantly failed as Swordholder, leading to misery and death for billions as humanity was forcibly relocated to Australia.
Doomed the majority of humanity by shutting down Wade's curvature propulsion research.
And finally, made sure the entire universe felt her icy hand of death one last time by leaving behind matter in the pocket universe she had been living in, despite being told very clearly in the communication that they received that the universe was perfectly tuned to the point that every single atom of matter needed to be returned lest the universe succumb to endless expansion and heat death.
Well done, Cheng Xin.
@p8wk Yeah heard that argument before & still don't buy it - she didn't ask to be Sword Holder, she was pushed into it & was filled with self doubt the whole time in everything she did - humanity fucked up by choosing her - so I think it's a bad argument - and the rest was her just being her. I really think the idea was to show that too much humanity is just as bad as too little.
"the oppressive regime which followed, and still exists to this day in China" You sound like one of those people who only consume info about China from anti-China one-sided sources....The fact that CiXin Liu is regarded as the best Sci-Fi author and his books are regarded as the best Sci-Fi series by Chinese people and China officials, tells you that's not the case. Maybe it's your knowledge and info about China being too anti-China propagandized, believing things that some media wanted you to believe...The American regime was responsible for the inhuman genocide of Native Americans, does that mean it is the same regime and still exists in America? The current leader of China and the Communist Party, Xi Jing Ping, and his family were the direct victims of the Cultural Revolution, and CR was officially deemed a disaster. That's why Cixi Liu could write about it and use that dark period in his books.
Most Chinese, and even their communist government, have grudgingly admitted that the cultural revolution was a bust. The government, of course, still doesn't acknowledge that the regime of today remains oppressive.
@@Beer_Dad1975respectfully disagree. she spends far too much of the novel allowing things to happen to her. she rarely affirmatively takes any actions to better humanities position. if she didn’t want that responsibility, fine, but you need to vocalize that better. passively letting it happen is bad.
Keep up the great work. Fantastic content
You are singlehandedly the reason I got into these books and it's become my favorite scifi series. Thanks for the awesome impact you've made!🤙🏻
Thanks Quinn! You are the voice of sci-fi in my heart. I would love to see a breakdown of the story of the gluttonous sea and the new painter and all that. Those stories were my favorite part of the trilogy and show how humanity is so story based! Thanks again and keep it up! We love it!
I am reading the first book in the trilogy and enjoying it greatly. I probably shouldn’t be watching your videos because they contain spoilers, but I love your presentation style. I can’t help but watch.😊
Thank you for reading the books and explaining them to us...
Hey Quinn, been a subscriber for YEARS but I think this is my first comment. Thanks for this video, I subscribed to you when you started off doing ASOIAF videos and kept watching. I just picked up the first book today and I feel like your series on the 3 body problem books will be really helpful in getting through them all.
Also want to add that you made me binge every single god damn Dune book in a month a few years ago because of the series you did on them 😅
Love the content as always, but have you ever thought of doing some commentary streams of your old videos?
Your videos are so good! Thanks for keeping me in touch with this amazing series 🪐
Realizing you're the reason I ever heard of the three body problem, just before leaks and other rumors of the show (I assumed then Netflix paid to pump related three body problem videos as a sort of new fangled ad program... tinhat I know). Still thanks for the intro. Agreed the show was solid as well.
