  • 3 BODY PROBLEM Explained: Why The DARK FOREST THEORY Is Horrifying & Season 2 Will Be Even Scarier. In this video we break down the Dark Forest Theory, as it is the title of the second book in the trilogy we thought we would go into the meaning behind it in more detail. Explaining what it means and the reasons why we have thus far been unable to contact any kind of alien life forms, what the scientists say and how this could lead into the second season of this sci-fi mind bender. lots to get through so lets get into it!

    /* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
    Greetings and salutations, my Fellow Bugs! It’s me MT and I come in peace! Welcome back to the Heavy Spoilers Show, y’all! Spoilers for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem series coming your way because we’ve got to discuss a key concept about what is coming next in this existential crisis of good television. So stop this video, go watch 3 Body Problem, cancel that boat cruise you scheduled with your kids and then come back here so we can talk about one of THE scariest concepts about OUR own reality that 3 Body Problem has begun to dive into in preparation for a potential Season 2. Because there might just be spies in the night sky.
    MEMBER SHOUT
    And guess what y’all? Did you know that we’re all just bugs? That’s the mind-bending reminder that 3 Body Problem has given to everybody who has had their perceptions of reality completely altered by watching its first season. I don’t know if you realized this but…the universe has become quite the big bitch after the Big Bang…and it’s only getting bigger every second believe it or not which is nuts. And since the universe is so big, the chances of sentient life existing on one of these seemingly infinite amounts of planets sprawled throughout it is pretty damn high, right?

      @heavyspoilers
      The "three body problem" you refer to regarding the challenge of analytically solving the motions of three gravitationally interacting bodies is indeed a notorious unsolvable conundrum in classical physics and mathematics. However, adopting the non-contradictory infinitesimal and monadological frameworks outlined in the text could provide novel avenues for addressing this issue in a coherent cosmological context. Here are some possibilities:
      1. Infinitesimal Monadological Gravity
      Instead of treating gravitational sources as ideal point masses, we can model them as pluralistic configurations of infinitesimal monadic elements with extended relational charge distributions:
      Gab = Σi,j Γij(ma, mb, rab)
      Where Gab is the gravitational interaction between monadic elements a and b, determined by combinatorial charge relation functions Γij over their infinitesimal masses ma, mb and relational separations rab.
      Such an infinitesimal relational algebraic treatment could potentially regularize the three-body singularities by avoiding point-idealization paradoxes.
      2. Pluriversal Superpositions
      We can represent the overall three-body system as a superposition over monadic realizations:
      |Ψ3-body> = Σn cn Un(a, b, c)
      Where Un(a, b, c) are basis states capturing different monadic perspectives on the three-body configuration, with complex amplitudes cn.
      The dynamics would then involve tracking non-commutative flows of these basis states, governed by a generalized gravitational constraint algebra rather than a single deterministic evolution.
      3. Higher-Dimensional Hyperpluralities
      The obstruction to analytic solvability may be an artifact of truncating to 3+1 dimensions. By embedding in higher dimensional kaleidoscopic geometric algebras, the three-body dynamics could be represented as relational resonances between polytope realizations:
      (a, b, c) ←→ Δ3-body ⊂ Pn
      Where Δ3-body is a dynamic polytope in the higher n-dimensional representation Pn capturing intersectional gravitational incidences between the three monadic parties a, b, c through infinitesimal homotopic deformations.
      4. Coherent Pluriverse Rewriting
      The very notion of "three separable bodies" may be an approximation that becomes inconsistent for strongly interdependent systems. The monadological framework allows rewriting as integrally pluralistic structures avoiding Cartesian idealization paradoxes:
      Fnm = R[Un(a, b, c), Um(a, b, c)]
      Representing the "three-body" dynamics as coherent resonance functors Fnm between relatively realized states Un, Um over the total interdependent probability amplitudes for all monadic perspectives on the interlaced (a, b, c) configuration.
      In each of these non-contradictory possibilities, the key is avoiding the classical idealized truncations to finite point masses evolving deterministically in absolute geometric representations. The monadological and infinitesimal frameworks re-ground the "three bodies" in holistic pluralistic models centering:
      1) Quantized infinitesimal separations and relational distributions
      2) Superposed monadic perspectival realizations
      3) Higher-dimensional geometric algebraic embeddings
      4) Integral pluriversal resonance structure rewritings
      By embracing the metaphysical first-person facts of inherent plurality and subjective experiential inseparability, the new frameworks may finally render such traditionally "insoluble" dynamical conundrums as the three-body problem analytically accessible after all - reframed in transcendently non-contradictory theoretical architectures.

    The Dark Forest is “an” explanation to the Fermi paradox, it’s not the only explanation.
    The great filter we face toward becoming multi-planetary is likely a common issue for any advanced life forms, but the biggest issue is sharing a similar technological evolutionary timeline. Critique on the Netflix show, they did a terrible job of not explaining why ships traveling 10% the speed of light would take 400 years to travel 4.2 light years.
    Here’s what really happened (in the book)
    Simple arithmetic would suggest that a vessel traveling at 0.1 the speed of light would take at least 40 years to cover a distance of 4 light years or more, and that's assuming it traveled at its top speed constantly from start to finish. If the journey actually took 400 years rather than 40, it would suggest the vessel was only moving at around 0.01 the speed of light rather than 0.1.
    In the novel it is stated that the Trisolaran feet can travel at 1/10 the speed of light, hence the confusion
    This apparent paradox is addressed explicitly by Liu when Ye Wenjie is being interrogated. Just as the OP asks:
    INTERROGATOR: Then I have a question. If the Trisolaran Fleet that had been launched is capable of flight at one-tenth the speed of light, it should take only forty years to reach the solar system. So why do you say that it would take more than four hundred years?
    The answer is:
    YE: Here’s the thing. The Trisolaran Interstellar Fleet is composed of incredibly massive spaceships. Accelerating them is a slow process. One-tenth the speed of light is only their maximum speed, but they cannot cruise at this speed for long before decelerating as they approach the Earth. Also, the source of propulsion for the Trisolaran ships is matter-antimatter annihilation. In front of each ship is a large magnetic field shaped like a funnel to collect antimatter particles from space. This collection process is slow, and only after a long wait can it gather enough antimatter to allow the ship to accelerate for a brief period. Thus, the fleet’s acceleration occurs in spurts, interspersed by long periods of coasting to collect fuel. This is why the time it takes the Trisolaran Fleet to reach the solar system is ten times longer than the flight time of a small probe.

    The Fermi Paradox is indeed _a_ theory. The reality of us not encountering any alien species yet is however more due to the fact that we can't even properly classify the habitability of the "goldilocks zone" planets in our nearest star system, a measly 4 light years away. The main problem is the unfathomable distances in our galaxy. There are around a hundred billion "solar systems" in the galaxy, but even light needs almost 100,000 years to travel from one end to the other. Unless we completely break known science, we will never be able to travel anywhere near the speed of light.
    What speaks against the reality of the Dark Forest Theory and Fermi Paradox is, even in the darkest of dark forests, you won't have to stay still for long until you see or hear life. Just like Ye did in the show. Beings do what beings do for all their odd reasons. For instance, there are always predators actively trying to create contact by tricking or mimicking prey.

    Real talk - in our understanding of 3 dimensional physics.. the probability of an advanced civilization surviving long enough in ANY solar system to produce a form of space travel (which would also need time travel or inter-dimensional travel..) is extremely low. Space is mostly chaotic and we are lucky enough to happen to live in a relatively stable single star system. This still doesn’t ensure that a disaster on a single planet (ie. meteor that killed the dinosaurs, ice age, great flood) couldn’t wipe out the population on any habitable planet. Even for us to travel far in space we would have to somehow break our born perception of only 3 dimensions just to maybe make it outside of our solar system. And if not there would be no chance any interstellar traveler could ever return here without Earth being destroyed or substantially changed. Science is so fascinating

    5:43 Also, it's safer to just _not_ attack because who knows how powerful your adversary is? If they are more powerful than you, you might die yourself. Therefore it's safer to just stay silent and hidden... I'm not sure if that's a part of the theory, though that seems to be an important part of it.

    The Dark Forest hypothesis cannot work for one very simple reason: You can't know you're in a hostile universe until you step out into it and stir up the hornets, so to speak. Take our own planet as a fine example. There's no shortage of horror here on Earth, and we know this because it happens all the time. Probably, for our own safety, we should all be hiding from each other in the deepest holes we can make to hide in. But we don't. We wage war, we rape, murder, lie cheat and steal ALL THE TIME. And the noise we make while doing it is pretty epic. There's no doubt in my mind that as we evolve, we WILL take these traits out in to the galaxy with us, and be even noisier with it. WE ourselves fly in the face of this poor attempt at explanation every single minute of every single day and anyone out there with reasonable means to detect industrialization would EASILY discover our activities without any need for us to attempt to contact them. We've already broken that Dark Forest silence, times beyond count. Any other intelligent civilization just stepping out into the wider universe would be doing the same, and the Dark Forest being the dark, violent place it is would put on a spectacular show as civilizations clash and wipe each other out. The Dark Forest hypothesis by definition renders the universe even noisier than we are. There's no way that everyone would know to be quiet and that's it, not in a universe of trillions of galaxies and a galaxy of hundreds of billions of stars.
    The ONLY two rational explanations for the Great Silence are either that there simply is nothing happening out there but simple, planet locked life that never makes it to anything greater, or, our endlessly irrational ego does not match our capabilities and we are simply too deaf and blind to see what's all around us. Given that we are not only VERY much alive but also intelligent enough to move outward from our home planet, it stands to reason that in a universe this vast and complex, we ARE NOT ALONE. Thus, we just still suck at detecting our neighbors. We still have a lot of growing up to do.

I don't think any civilization so violent as the Dark Forrest suggests would survive to make it to be an interplanetary civilization, let alone interstellar. Humans dominate the planet by cooperation. Our problems with violence against each other stems from our inability to see all humans as part of our tribe, which is something I think we have to get passed to make it to space. Cooperation is always more beneficial than competition. This is in no way a commentary on Cixin Lui's story, though.

    One more thing about the three-body problem series is that on the alpha centauri with the three stars it made for a very very unstable orbit of that planet so therefore that civilization never had a chance to develop very long before there was a catastrophe that destroyed their civilization so therefore they may have been going through rebuilding and destruction for several million years and basically for us and only took $100,000 years because we have a stable orbit.
    The reason why they want to disrupt our scientific ability is because in 400 years in which case that's the time it takes for them going at 1% speed of light by the time they were to get to us we would be more advanced than they are at the moment.
    Well that is happening their civilization would have collapsed again because of the fact that their planet has an unstable orbit and therefore the three stars would have basically reached havoc at some point in the next few hundred years.
    now the Santee believed that we would go and destroy them as opposed to perhaps us being a bit more evolved by then saying that you know we stopped them or absorb them when we get to us and then we can reach out to them and basically give them some help.
    Will you give him some help or else basically put them in a zoo like scenario where we'll just simply keep them primitive by essentially not letting them get out of their solar system because of the facts sooner or later their planet destroys their civilization with his unstable orbit.

It seems the universe is awash with different Alien species that have visited our little planet. It seems they couldn't give a crap about us. I've always felt we project our human nature too readily, if we're all horrible, selfish and warlike, then everyone else must be too. Personally, I feel enlightenment and global cooperation are a prerequisite to achieve the sort of distances involved in visiting other worlds. We'll either achieve it, and become a positive force in the universe among all the others, or simply destroy ourselves long before. Either way, currently we're nothing but an interesting little location for them to visit from time to time. No need to go to the trouble of yeeting black holes in our direction.
