      Handcrafting has no inherent value. Just takes longer, and adds to an object's price.

    • @joshuad748
      @joshuad748 Před 4 lety +20

      BeardedDanishViking drawing a blade out from a bar by hand is definitely higher quality than cutting sheet metal. That’s why the other two dwarfed when quenching, it wasn’t just because the water quench. Matt quenched an already more molecularly compact hand-forged blade into oil. That is easily better and more reliable than sheet metal or pre-cut blades. Thats why the objects price would be higher, because it IS better.

      @@ccortez392 Have you, I'm a metallurgically certified graduate who has been making knives and such for years. Water is dangerous! Plus their issues were other than just water, they both warped heavily to one side! Probably because they were not likely properly forged blades like Matt's. The Japanese (I have antiques and a modern made from me, have studied it for years, and know oil can cause a downward curve, but water and upward one) have been using water for years and also lose at least a third of blades due to cracking or extreme warpage. I have used water myself, but I would never attempt it on pattern welded steel, too many stress risers to consider. Plus even mono steel, unless it was closer to what antique blades were made of due to carbon loss and homogenization of folding, and the fact the steel had differing levels of carbon, making them closer to an overall 1060/1065 steel wouldn't think to use water in sections under an inch think - which obviously does not work for a cutting instrument. There's my two cents......

      Luke Wells, Staying true to a cutlass would mean it's a strong, simple, and nasty design. Bill's blade would be the closest to what you'd imagine in a swashbuckling adventure. Matt's is superior and more expensive, John's is for a nobleman who would never sweat.

    • @thomasjenkins7506
      @thomasjenkins7506 Před 6 lety +8

      yeah, bill's mass produced version is most likely what a pirate would have. john's is very nice, but there is no way a pirate would have one. it's more something a navy officer would receive as an honor from the queen. matt's is probably the furthest thing you'd ever see a sailor own, but it went with functionality over flair, even with the damascus blade.
      in my opinion, functionality beats all, so matt wins.

    • @cuttlefishrampant5241
      @cuttlefishrampant5241 Před 6 lety +6

      Thomas Jenkins you are wrong in a couple ways my friend. Having owned two cutlasses dated from 1760 and 1770 respectively, I can assure you that no pirate would have had a scull and crossbones on his guard. Also an unwrapped handle gets slippery with blood and sweat, and so is ineffective, this can be solved like Matt did, with the grooves, or how my real cutlasses are, by cotton wrapping. Matt's is actually closest to what a sailor would have carried, its a well known french cutlass type, made during the 1770's to 80's. Was issued on many french Men-o'-War, and since pirates took any functional, well balanced piece of steel they could (to the point of broken cutlasses filed down to make dirks or daggers), I think many pirate sailors would have owned french hangers. Just my humble opinion.

    • @thomasjenkins7506
      @thomasjenkins7506 Před 6 lety

      you misunderstood my comment. when i said that the mass produced one is what the pirates would have, that is exactly what i meant. i wasn't really referring to the aesthetic designs. just the fact that bill's was made with parts that already formed and pulled off a shelf of premade items. matt's blade alone would have cost about as much as the ship itself and john's was pure fantasy. matt's guard and bills blade are pretty much what they would have had.

    The Octopus Hand-guard, the gold pommel, and the wire-wrapped Handle look really good, but all three in the same colour seem a bit monotonous.
    The blue-ish handle looks really nice and that blade has a really aggressive scorpion-esque look to it, which looks cool, but weird to use.
    And last but not least, the winner. Could anything beat Damascus steel? Hell no.
    But despite a nice pattern, that cutlass has a nice Handle and Handguard too. But really beautiful is the length-width ratio, which makes it look more like a cutlass than the other longer and more narrow blades.
    Matt has made a really beautiful sword, which also looks like a cutlass should look.

      Just because a sword is ornamental or gilded etc. doesn't mean that it isn't useable or practical. Plenty of swords in this perioud were very pretty and ornamented but were used in combat. Remember, if you're rich you can have a fancy sword that you would still use in battle. Think gangbanger with a gold plated desert eagle or taliban warlord with a silver plated AK47. You don't even have to be rich, a lot of the swords issued to British soldiers in the 18th and 19th centuries looked fairly fancy for a sword but were clearly used in combat.

    Mat had a shorter, heavier blade. Cutlasses, being issued to chiefs, and non-officers of the navy, were meant to be used more belowdecks, and in a pinch to hack through ship's line. So short and heavy, so as to not be hindered in cramped cabin spaces belowdecks and to cleave lines, I give it to Mat. Or at least my U.S. Navy twinge is telling me.

      We're welders by trade. When working in the field, you often don't have your welding helmet with you when someone starts a weld, so it becomes a habit to put a hand between your eyes and the weld arc pretty early on. The habit is strong enough that even when we're watching a video of someone welding, we avert our eyes or cover the screen to protect our vision, even though the brightness of the arc doesn't translate through the camera.

      Cytrillex BagelsMan wire wrapped hilts will rip up your bare hands- unless of course they're already heavily calloused from working rigging for YEARS lol. Realistically they were designed to provide extra grip when wearing gauntlets, which typically had a leather glove insert. the practice of wearing gloves continued even after gauntlets fell out of use, but generally only in the upper classes and nobility. it would not be unreasonable to assume a full wire wrap hilt was originally intended for an officer (who would have had gloves as part of the uniform).

    Matt's might've performed the best, and was forged the best, but the kraken guard with the wavy blade? 👌😌👌

      They've actually done two different versions of Excalibur. The game tie in, yes, but before that they made the Fate/Zero version of the sword. So there's really no reason why they couldn't make yet another version of it besides maybe the burn out factor of the fans.

    Ilya is definitely the best bladesmith. I kinda want them to make a full suit of armour. It would be a nice challenge for them
