Game Pass isn’t the problem here it’s sales. You make a $200 million game who do you sell it to. They don’t have a large enough platform base to sell games like that too and when they said hey guys, can we sell some stuff on another platform what did we tell them exactly? We said no we got upset. You can’t blame them for the money is because it cost money to make no money no games.

In a gamepass you dont need individual games to be the very best of the best. Your package just needs to be 'worth the price'

Phil convinced the team that gamepass and acquisitions would be the future but time has shown that they bit off way more than they could ever chew with their failed attempt to strong arm Nintendo and PlayStation in to this new era. This company deserves the hate right now.

Forward thinking: Imagine Xbox is narrowing their focus on next generation hardware with a top tier launch lineup... Imagine a PS6 equivalent Xbox releasing in 2026 with a handheld counterpart... Imagine Elder Scrolls 6, Gears 6, Blade, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3 are day one launch titles. I think they're looking to the next generation rather than trying to dig their way back in this generation. Imagine all 5 of those launch titles as being bangers. What if that's the goal? Release Gen 10 over a year before PS6 and follow the Sony blueprint of a winning launch lineup of games. I believe their big titles stay exclusive to Xbox and PC. Older smaller titles go multiplatform. Gamepass is still in play. And we get a handheld Xbox. I think they're putting resources into that main goal of winning in 2026.

This all boils down to optimal shareholder value, expanding market share, & copyright laws. Until all those elements are revolutionized or eliminated entirely, nothing will fundamentally change. Soon enough, every publisher will consolidate all their studios into one big entity to work on the likes of ESO, WoW, COD/Warzone, or mobile games, maximizing MTX output, retention rates, and corporate profit margins. The games industry is being bastardized for a casino, and every industry is likewise suffering under the shareholder economy at an accelerated rate.

I personally think these publisher acquisitions weren't about the studios but about the IPs. I believe that Sony was in the process of making Starfield and COD exclusivity moves and Xbox purchased the publishers as a Defensive maneuver. Sony was killing them with these exclusivity moves and Xbox felt like their only option to prevent it was to buy the publishers and their IPs. Now that you've signed the high priced free a free agents (NFL Analogy) you gotta cut some roster depth. Even very good players [studios] who were starters for you last season. I also think that major IPs like Elder Scrolls, Doom, Fallout, Everwild, Gears, Fable, Perfect Dark are alot further in development than anything Arkane Austin or Tango was working on. And resources are being funneled into finishing these games that are closer to completion. It sucks. I hate it. But perhaps some studios have become too lackadaisical under Microsoft hands off business model. Idk. But people always say Xbox has no major exclusives and funneling resources into these bigger IPs is a reaction to that. Maybe they love the idea of smaller and indie games but the consumer isn't supporting that idea. The consumer wants known quantities and Playstation/Nintendo evel exclusives. And as amazing as Tango and Arkane Austin are, their potential to do that is less than say ID, BGS, Treyarch, etc...

I don't think there is a good human answer to the Xbox situation. It's just cold hard Business. While hard to take these studios when held up against Microsoft's internal metrics they just didn't cut the mustard on ROI. Even though these titles are fan loved and some managed to reviewed well they just didn't move the needle financially. The subscriber count from all available reports seems to have stagnated or even dropped some. As a result of introducing Games Pass, they have or are training people not to buy games or at least purchase them at a low cost. Similar to how Apple trained everyone that all games and apps cost 99 cents, a race to the bottom if you will. Also, everyone likes to equate Games Pass to the Netflix of games, well how many shows does Netflix cancel or fail to renew after one or two seasons because the algorithm says so the answer is a lot.

To this day, I still buy the games I play on Xbox.
When Xbox pulls a Sega don't cry and say you wished they never did gamepass. Just remember y'all wanted to be cheap and not pay for the games you so called love.
Game Pass has conditioned ya to not pay for shit. Y'all don't even pay for a game on sale. And y'all talked so bad on PlayStation for not doing that but in the same sentence say you love Nintendo for their exclusives. Make it make since. You can't have amazing exclusives without supporting the industry.

The thing that recently exemplified the Game Pass issue was Visions of Mana on Xbox. It was first incorrectly speculated / bullshitted it would be on Game Pass and when it was later announced to not be on Game Pass on twitter, all the replies were "Will wait for Game Pass"
As a publisher, if you're looking at those replies to a game you've ported to the Xbox, despite the market there for such games being limited, and all you see are people essentially saying "I'm not gonna pay for it" then you're gonna wonder why the hell have you bothered to port it to Xbox in the first place. The userbase is literally telling you they will not buy your game.
A majority of 25m users who have been conditioned to not pay for games. And since they're now in the cost cutting phase, Xbox won't (for much longer) be able to make sweetheart deals with major third parties to get their games day 1 on Game Pass.
So you've now got a business model that won't be as generous to get major games onto the service while at the same time has taught your customers to not pay for games outside the service. It's beyond fucked.

@@ooombasa5080 exactly I haven't even touched on the "I'll wait for Game Pass". And then they complain when they see this.
Even now, the only reason I have Game Pass was because it was free whenever I got my ROG Ally and my Dads new Alienware. The only reason I used it was to download the EA version of Jedi Survivor cause the Xbox copy I bought didn't come with the PC Version like my Starfield did.
Xbox literally trained their consumer base to not purchase games anymore and it's bitting them in the ass big time. And the same people who praise game pass will turn around and buy every Switch game but complain about a game not being in gamepass.
And I bet you Xbox is gonna double down on game pass cause that's what they promised. But I guarantee you developers are about to stop making games for Xbox.
Just like you said why would they sit there and wat h people say "I'll wait for it to drop on game pass". Why would I risk making a game for Xbox and get nothing in return.
Hell at least on PlayStation when a game is put on PS Plus, the check is way substantial and then their next release is a guaranteed hit. Just look at the people who made Dont Starve, or the people who made their indie debut on PS Plus. Their game went to sell big time once it dropped on PC.
Hell with gamepass indie developers don't even get to look forward to the PC release making money cause they tied in PC releases too.

I love being able to stream classic games on PS5 now on top of the added extra discounts on PS Exclusives. Sony and Nintendo are playing it smart.
Make your classic games the games on the subscription base. Add discounts or in Nintendo's side those game tickets and then we get a plethora of games while still supporting the new releases.
Even Steam, they don't have a subscription base but how theyve been responding to the Steam Deck and making the games we already own work for it on their end instead of relying on the developers. It's a win win.

Xbox is going where the money is. We seem to think that if they build it money will just come but that’s not true. These studios have made great games before and we did not buy them. Dead Space was great. Guess what we won’t get a sequel because not enough people bought it. FF7 Rebirth is amazing. Square is wondering right now how are they going to make this venture profitable. We love the game, but they’ve realized not enough. People are buying the sequel and if not enough people will buy the sequel. What happens to the game that comes after that you know the third part that we need to finish the story. How many people are going to buy it? Xbox is doing what needs to be done. All the other major studios have said how hard it is to make money in a market that’s not growing get mad at them for saying in this market that’s not growing we are going to go where the money is.
Look at what the consumer has told them. As soon as Xbox said, we would like to sell games on other first party platforms. We got out the pitchforks. They wanted to sell games that needed more sales games that we had got enough of and we said don’t you dare. Well how are they the group that is in last place as a first party developer going to develop AAA games that cost $200 million or more and turn a profit. They have the least amount of customers to sell to how do you make money? You have to go where the money is that’s it You as a group of gamers need to let this fantasy go that they can just develop a $200 million game and sell it to this small audience that ain’t happening. Anyone with half a brain knows that so don’t blame them for going where the money is. We told them, don’t develop your games and try and sell them to other people on different platforms. We literally boxed them in and then got mad when they said well let’s turn the box upside down.

In reality, these studios were likely headed for closure regardless of Microsoft's acquisition. As Sarah Bond mentioned, at the time of purchase, the gaming industry was booming and seemed poised for rapid growth. However, things have since stalled, and the industry's outlook has dimmed. Microsoft initially projected growth to justify the acquisition, but when targets weren't met, adjustments had to be made. From a business perspective, it makes sense to cut jobs in areas that wouldn't generate returns for several years or weren't performing well. It's reasonable to wish that a large corporation like Microsoft would prioritize doing the right thing, even if it meant taking occasional losses. However, pretending there's no rationale behind these decisions doesn't help anyone. The economic landscape changed, so plans had to adapt accordingly.

Why would I continue to put more money into a company that actively makes the gaming ecosystem so much worse. Thousands of people out of the job just so Microsoft can make more money from harvesting mobile data and CoD macrotransactions? Nah man.
I'm still on Xbox because gamepass is a good value that was supposed to allow studios to do smaller and interesting things. Let them make art. But now gamepass is just a subscription fee for CoD and Gears. Halo is free to play. CoD has a free to play mode that gets the primary focus of development. I'd be shocked if gears multi-player isn't free.

If that's true, I think Xbox probably look at the current wave of incredibly successful indie games with much smaller teams, and much less time which are producing similar to Hi-Fi Rush results.
I don't think every game needs to be Call of Duty for them, but as a business they could spend an amount of money equal to 5 years X 50 devs on a Hi-Fi Rush style approach... or they can scatter that capital across multiple indie/smaller studios and they'll probably end up with more than one similarly-sized success story for the same money.

It's called second party games -- something Nintendo and Sony do ALL THE TIME. Xbox, however, has no leadership and no talent in curating creative and game studio. If this wasn't obvious before (e.g., Rare, Lionhead), its buying of studio after studio after studio, and the sheer lack of production and now closure, just establish the idiocy of this leadership. I'd imagine that most people on Xbox have Game Pass as well, and plan to play it there. But if success on Game Pass is no longer a metric that Microsoft cares about, then that thing is doomed. And in terms of support, those of use who HAVE bought into Game Pass shouldn't be expected to buy these games in addition to playing them there, because being able to play them there is the entire thing we're already paying for.

  • @Akrymir
    @Akrymir Před 12 dny

Game Pass is a value play, but value hasn't been a barrier to growth in the industry for two decades. The largest barrier, by far, that keeps people from buying more games is the time they have to play them, and really it's the time they are willing to spend on them. Quality is king and has been for a very long time. When a game gets a 70/100, the reviewer labels it "good", but the community calls it mediocre. That's because there are too many other options out there that are a better use of their time. People don't consume video games like they do TV. And even if that wasn't the case the long term result of a subscription model is the reduction of investment in the games in order to increase revenue once subscriber numbers plane out.

I think Gamepass can work if they get titles like call of duty and blade in there. If Gamepass goes away you can go ahead and close Xbox’s doors. As of now there’s no reason to have an Xbox if you don’t have Gamepass

You guys need to stop using financial terms on your podcast if you don’t know what they mean. Revenue is not a good way to measure the success of a business instead, you should be looking at profit. Revenue - expenses. You need to look at how much money you took in how much money you had to spend to bring in revenue and then what do you have left over? That’s your profit. That’s how you guys do business just look at how much money you made you have to pay lights you have to pay gas. You have to pay employees and after all of that, there’s money left over. Xbox has to do the same thing when they make a game every year they say revenue is going up that’s because prices are going up so naturally every year revenue increases for a company but the question is were you able to generate a higher profit margin. That’s not just profit that’s division profit/ revenue. One year you could have great profits and low revenue. You get a really high profit margin. The next year you could have really high revenue and low profit. You have a really low profit margin. You’re doing worse one year than you did the last year, but somehow your revenue went up. It’s something most people don’t know how to do very well. It’s the reason why this decision had to be made numbers do not lie. These studios could’ve made some great games for $200 million but they wouldn’t have sold well. Xbox has the small list to sell to And that base told them we don’t want you selling our games on third-party platforms. We just did that a few months ago when they announced four games were going to third-party platforms people were upset. They said we can’t do that again. How are they going to make money then.
Everyone’s going to say well Microsoft has money. Microsoft isn’t supposed to have a division where they have to fund it completely and the division doesn’t generate revenue or profit. Nobody makes an investment and watches it. You want to see some black if you don’t then you cut. These studios had to be cut because they couldn’t generate black. They were in the red.
