2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Transfer Case Clunk Grinding Noise on Take off

  • Only on hard acceleration the noise comes out loud thru the floor board..if you drive it normal with a soft take off the Jeep moves fine..while its moving you can floor it and its fine..just after a stop with a quick hard acceleration it comes back..that's why I'm pointing to the transfer case ..Enjoy...S7E318

    Were the front differential mounts checked? That could cause this noise as the differential is lifting out of optimal drive-line angle causing everything to be out of alignment including the T-case.

    My 09 dodge ram 4x4 kinda did this last night. I was driving home uphill in heavy snow in 2 wd and my traction light came on, so decided to stop and turn on 4x4. Well 4x4 wouldnt work and wouldnt move truck. All I heard was loud scraping or grinding noise that sounded like a grinder on the ground if that makes sense. Had turned truck back into 2wd and got unstuck after a few and made it home thankfully.

      @@alyoungcuda it only fixed my shifting into P R N D that jumped when changing from one to the other. But as I pulled off 2 blocks away after stopping at a stop sign the grinding was still there at take off. I bought a new computer like another mechanic suggested aaand nothing.. It was 2 months later that is seemed to stop for about 3 months. I hardly drove it being afraid of messing other things up while looking for a fix. I work at advance auto parts where the mechanic bought the parts but it wasn't at my shop. I will be looking through the history to see what exactly did he purchase. I've been watching videos and believe it can be a bad front drive shaft being that it has some play? Or he missed something which I will know when I hopefully get the items he purchased. It doesn't do it every time so it's "hard for them to truly find the issue" so they say (after I called almost in tears 10 mins away from him. I was so upset Ididn't go back). Idk but I'd love to get to the bottom of this. I really love this jeep and besides that it is in great condition. If I was guaranteed the problem will be fixed I'm willing to pay money money. Thank you for this video.... had the same sound ....had it towed to my Jeep dealer.... Jeep tells me it's my transfer case....it imploded...no oil inside..... They want $4950 to replace it.... They said the transfer case is $3500.... labor is $1450..... I see online I can get a rebuilt one for less than $2000.... However I don't know if I trust small local mechanics to deal with this issue.... Is it worth trying to save money by going to a local guy with a rebuilt transfer case? Or should I just bite the bullet and pay jeep to do it right with a new transfer case?. ... Since the Jeep is at their shop on the lift right now ....I have to figure in the cost to pay them for what they've done already...probably around $600......and to get it towed to a small shop..... I should add I have about a 135000 miles ...the car is paid off ...other than that I do have a ticking sound coming from the engine .... Probably valve lifters.......so who knows what's next... maybe a transmission failure.. et cetera.

    • @alyoungcuda
      @alyoungcuda  Před 2 lety +1

      You can wheel and deal with the dealer, you need to cry you have no money,single dad and all that stuff,you will be surprised at what they will do to get the job..they might not charge you the 600.00 for looking at it and you can ask if the part at least can be discounted. But the rebuilt are good, they have a warranty too. Dealer stuff might have a better warranty. You need to think and check on nada.com how much your jeep is worth and if you want to add the cost to it and how much mileage is on the rest of the jeep. This customer ended up trading it in to a jeep dealer for a 2018 model..no need to mention the noise..😆

      The transmission shifts fine up and down and when you by pass someone it kicksdown and shifts up..if there was a problem in the trans it would show up in any of those gears or reverse..and in another video I disconnected the front driveshaft..so it should operate in rear wheel drive and it didn't even budge....had to put the front shaft back on to get it to drive..so its most likely the gears in that out put shaft after the chain that spins the gears going to the front gear..

    Chain is probably skipping the sprockets or there are teeth busted on them and chain slips . My commander 5.7 started doing this one day at first it was random Loud bang from hard acceleration off a stop light and I thought suspension or drive shafts then it started to be easily repeatable off every stop of slow speed where you accelerate lol and then it became Everytime you try to get moving without soft peddling it to get moving . When this got bad enough the service 4wd light came on and shut the motor off for going into 4lo or neutral . Easy way to tell your case is shit is to pull up into something steep and loose the case won't be able to hold the power and you will get this noise also you won't see any rear tire spin just the front . At higher seeds it can hold the torque without slipping . I found a used case last week with 12k miles on it and put that in yesterday afternoon noise is all gone I'm going to pull the old case apart I didn't see any debris In the old fluid so probably just chain slack I'll clean up the case and sell it make my money back on the case I bought .

    Update on this Jeep..customer bounced between spending the money to rebuild the transfer case or trade it in..with 154,000 miles its worth about 5 grand..rebuilt units sell around 1200.00 to 1800.00 dollars..so if you take the 2 grand give or take out of the vehicles price of 5 grand leaves you with a jeep worth about 3 grand as is..dealer offered 2500.00 as a trade in towards an 2018 jeep grand Cherokee..customer bought a used car..I guess rebuilding would of been alot less..make your own choice depending on the money situation..you can always go junk yard used...but thats like playing roulette if you get a good one or not.

  • @Luis-dk6zp
    @Luis-dk6zp Před 2 lety +6

    That noise is from a bad transfer case..... remove the front drive shaft and put it on drive and you will see that the truck wont have power at the rear tires. All the power is going to the front like a front wheel drive car that's what the noise is to much torque at the front wheel's so the chain in the gear box is jumping inside the case and it will give up like a bad transmission and wont move at all if keep driving in that condition. If by any chance you can push the truck and it rolls freely in park with out the e-brake on chances are that the transfer case is gone completely.

      Like I mentioned before my friend just changed the whole transfer case and just fill it up with a proper fluid. I got lucky and I found the transfer case by my local boneyard and I was able to pay $150 for it but then again I have a lot of connections type of job I do and I buy a lot from these people but trust me they're extremely cheap don't let a shopt over charge you for something use. Also you might want to check the center shaft that goes from the front wheels to the transfer case most of the time they also have bad u-joints but it's not going to make the noise that is making right now trust me it's a transfer case I've done too many of those.

      I removed the Front Driveshaft to see if the noise goes away..what went away was the ability to to move in drive or reverse..so the problem is clearly in the transfer case and it affects the rear driveshaft operation..gonna put the front driveshaft back on and have the customer make a choice..it's either drive it like that, get rid of the Jeep or replace the transfer case...rebuilt is gonna be about a grand or more....or try a junk yard unit.
