  • I had a suspension clunk in the driver's side front suspension for over a year at the dealer could not figure out. After several visits to the dealership it was determined to be the upper control arm. Watch the video for a full explanation of what happened and how we figured it out.

    CONFIRMED! 2012 GC 3.6L 150k mi. Upper control arm solved the clunk. Ball joint was bad so I went the OEM route with the whole control arm assembly. Your video gave me hope that it would solve the noise and it did!

    I just bought a preowned Jeep Grand Cherokee (as-is) and its been making that clunking noise for certain bumps. My old jeep compass made the same noise after a few months off the lot and it was the upper control arm/strut. Good thing I found your video to confirm!

    I have the same noise on my WK2 - thanks for the summary to know where I should dig in first. And what you said about the Hemi is true! People in general enjoy trying to find faults with anything. I have had nothing but great experiences with a few Gen III Hemis. Do a search for any manufacturer/engine combo and there will be videos, forums, you name it on how unreliable and terrible each one is. Then you always get the classic statement "I am never buying a BRAND X product again!".
    Overall, the WK2 Hemi is an outstanding vehicle.

    Just received a RECALL notice on our 2022 L for a possible Pinch Bolt issue when the Jeep was being built. The Pinch Bolt can also rust making taking things apart very expensive. While watching a video about Pinch Bolts, there was a lot of talk about the upper control arm bushings on the Jeeps. Thanks for the video and discussion about the clunk noise.

      @@ApexPredatorOutdoors Definitely recommend flex head ratcheting wrenches. You're going at those nuts blind and there's an awkward angle for the two closest to the cabin so having a flex head wrench would help. I didn't at the time, and I was by myself, so I ended up duct taping a regular box end wrench to the nut so it stayed in place, and then backed out the bolts in the wheel well slowly. Also cut off those little tabs on the bolts to get them out. I'm sure those are there to keep the bolts from coming loose but I had no choice with my resources. Very jerry rigged but it worked!

    I have the same issue. Changed out both upper control arms. Issue improved but still there. Replaced lower control arms and did wheel alignment. Issue still there.
    Had breaks done and one was not put back correctly which made it worse. Only found out the breaks were not installed correctly as the break calliper came off and hit the inner wheel.
    Breaks fixed and issue still there.
    I wonder if the mechanic replaced the bolts with new ones when changing out the control arms.

    Rattle Over Bumps - if you have an older WK2 (mine is a 2015 with 100K) with original break pads, your rattle could be caused by rusted mounting studs on the break pads. They make the little pressure mounting tabs out of cheap metal and they literally rust away with time and then allow the pads to make an annoying rattle over bumps (can occur on rear as well). I live in Cleveland, OH and dump a lot of salt on our roads, so if you go longer than say 5 years, and live in a similar environment you may have the same issue. Simple fix with new pads (although both my rotors and pads had another 10-15K in them). I have NEVER had a set of pads last longer than 35-40K - Jeep did a great job engineering the pads and rotors to match the WK2 (mine is V6)! When I went to replace them, I used paid up to use MOPAR parts hoping to get same results again - don't mess with success!

    Hi there. I have Jeep WK and after complete suspension replacement, there is some clunk noise I am hunting for more than 3 weeks now making me really crazy. Just a simple question to you, do you have the sound, the clunk somehow recorded? My upper control arms are re-used, just the bushings and joint was replaced (pressed) back to the original part and seems to be one of the possible things to be wrong, but you know, there are plenty other things it may cause it..

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  Před 4 lety

      Sorry I tried to get it on film but it was never allowed enough that a camera would have picked it up... It's really a subtle clunkfrom the suspension it always sounded like it was from possibly the engine bay but it was the vibration of the clunk transferring from the upper control arm mount to the side of the engine bay wall. It was only happening over certain bumps usually speed bumps or railroad tracks. Or sometimes on that small lip when you leave your driveway. Chances are you have a different issue if that upper control arm was replaced. it could be that problem that I talked about earlier in the same video where two pieces of metal were touching...fortunately now that it's all over I realize there's only certain things that it could possibly be to make that noise... Your next step would be motor mounts I think

And yeah, when i go over certain bumps/small potholes, while turning Right, I hear a clunk (clank?) in the Left side of the front end - when the Left tire hits the bump. Question: am I safe to drive with this (let's say its the UCA) until I can get it in the shop? I'm actually heading on a longish trip (4 hr drive) in a couple days. Everything was inspected 3 times - twice by a Goodyear shop during alignment checks and once by my friend that does racing stuff on the side - and everything was deemed to be good and tight. Alignment is within spec all around. I’m at a complete loss of why the tires could be feathering, until I saw this video. Do you think bad upper control arms and/or their bushings and/or their ball joints could cause tire feathering? I also experience intermittent steering wheel shaking at interstate speeds (65MPH+). What do you think? I’m at a complete loss of why my Jeep has this issue, and it just rolled over 25,300 miles today.

      Small update… the steering wheel shimmy got worse, and the bump steer was awful over most bumps. So I took it to the dealer and they found that the rearmost bushing in each lower control arm was shot. So I got those arms replaced along with the lower ball joints and the bump steer is very much improved. Unfortunately I still have the shimmy. I have yet to figure it out, but I suspect it’s going to be the UCA’s that are at fault.

However, I later noticed that this noise also arises when the car is parked and I move the steering wheel back and forth. Swapped out the steering shaft and that wasn’t the culprit. Check tie rods, pitman arm, sway bar link. Those all are effected by turning wheel.
      Hate to say it but if you have AWD or 4X4 look at transfer case if it's while stopped slow and fast traveling. Can also be wheel hub/bearings.
      But if it's only during big bumps and not after startup Sway Bar Bushing/Links, but if it's at startup you really need to check transfer case/Drive Shaft if you have 4x4/AWD.

    • @510Redneck
      @510Redneck Před 2 lety

      I don't know if you guys fixed your issues or not but make certain all 4 tires are the same, tread wear the same, and air pressures the same. If not it can burn up your transfer case really easy in these things. The clunk you might be hearing could be the transfer case engaging the 4 wheel drive.... if the tires are off in any of those 3 mentioned it can repeatedly engage and disengage wearing out components and burning up the t case.
      When replacing tires all 4 must be replaced also for the same reasoning... the wheel speed sensors will detect variations in speeds and keep engaging and disengaging the 4 wheel drive thinking you are on slippery conditions.
      I found this out the hard way as I neglected a slow leak around a bead after putting new tires on (just kept pumping it up here and there).... it would make a clunk similar to the sound of a really hard shift but what it was is the 4wd engaging.
      If you ever feel your wheel pull unusually going uphill or around turns it's also a sign to check those things because it's trying to make corrections thinking you are slipping on a slippery surface.
      If that is not your issue (as it was mine) then well I hope it helps you save future headaches knowing such anyways because t cases are thousands like most other damn things it seems for these vehicles. 🙄✌

    There are no mechanics at dealerships these days. They have techs that only know how to R&R parts until the problem is resolved. Meanwhile you pay for all their guesses as to what is wrong. Pretty pathetic.

    Lmao your dealer sucks. Upper control arms are a very common cause of clunks.

      Just lifted my WK2. Looking at wheels & tires to replace my stock 17s. Thinking of going with a dark gray 18in Gladiator set.
      I’ve been considering Nito Grappler, Cooper Discoverer & Falken Wildpeak

    Ik this is an old video but when this first started for you, did a decently loud squeak along with it?
    I have a 14 limited 4x4. First cold this year, I’ll go over a speed bump or cross street in town and hear a bit of a clunk but it’s covered up with a louder squeaking noise. I do have air suspension. I plan to check this out this weekend the squeak just scares me a bit 😅

      The bushings get loud when it's cold/moist outside. You'll know it's a clunk .. aka bad upper control when you go over small bumps and hear it knocking around. Especially when turning and going over bumps.
