  • I replace the chain in a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Quadra-Trac transfer case. The old chain stretched and was jumping the gear teeth during acceleration. It was making a ratcheting, clicking, knocking noise

Watching this video, gave me the confidence to do it myself. The auto part store gave me the price of a new transfer case at 1800 to 2750... i called the dealership parts department got the part numbers and Google searched them and found both sprockets and chain for less than 450 and I put them on myself due to this video... oh and the auto part store did not sell the parts separately... dealership only.

Sweet! I see things really don’t change much. I had to do this same job in a 2004 with the NP247 full time transfer case. It’s really not more difficult then the older part time cases.
I did the oil pan on my 13 grand and had to drop the whole front crossmember. A lot of work but not complicated. By far the worst part was getting the front CV driveshaft out of those yoke cups!
Give me U joints and straps any day.

Hey, great video! I have a different t case on my Dakota, but I strongly suspect I have the same chain slop issue. Your video is very helpful and encouraging. I plan to do the slop test on it soon to be sure, and most likely I'll end up doing the job myself in the garage.

Is your clicking noise when you go from P to R, then to 1st and right when you stop? Mine clicks, but not nonstop yet. You can hear it when reversing, right when it stops, and right as she goes from first. I'm not sure if it's the transfer case, or a bad u-joint on the front drive shaft. Your ideas would be appreciated.

I was lookin at the manual for this chain install and it says "There is a blue link on one side of the chain. This blue link MUST be
installed facing upward" Not sure if they mean facing outwards so you can see the blue links after you have the chain installed or if they mean upwards like at the top of the sprockets

Hi, I've got a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo ZJ with the full time all wheel drive. It's making the same noise when I do a hard pull off from a stop. My Jeep has the NP 249 transfer case and it does have the viscus coupling. Do you think the chain could be causing the noise and would the cover be able to be removed as easily as this jeep was? Thanks.

I am hearing and feeling My 2019 grand Cherokee knocking noise in the back when it shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. Sounds like going over a bump in the back. I hear a knock when I first get in starting into1st or reverse sometimes. And sometimes when shifting back down into first while coming to a stop. Do you think this is the problem you are describing in the video?
