  • Clarence was a show a rarely ever gave a glance at, if I was bored and it happened to be on, I'd give it watched. But something changed when I tried to give it my full attention and wow, Clarence can get pretty out of pocket real fast. Today, I wanted to talk about that, dig into how I view Clarence and what makes it different from other slice of life cartoons.

When Clarence first aired, I never gave it a second look, assuming it would be another slice-of-life show with tons of gross-out humour. However, I wound up watching the entirety of the series with my nephew a few months ago and...wow, was I wrong. Clarence really excels at portraying kids as being believable kids, in a more true-to-life way than many other cartoons. Sure, there are plenty of tongue-in-cheek moments and parodies to appeal to older viewers, but the writers did a fantastic job creating that sense of wonderment we have as children. I think the moment that got me the most was when it finally clicked for Clarence that Miss Baker was an actual person with a life outside of school; it's a great little nod to how reality can be so very different from the perceptions children have of it.

The attention to detail in Clarence is exceptional. The backgrounds, for example, are always jam-packed with stuff that give each setting a personality and a realistic sense of being lived in by the characters. Also, something completely different: the way that some episodes end abruptly at a surprise rise in action, like the goose episode and the karate episode, instead of petering out into a traditional denouement is a great type of final gag that I really wish I saw more in other shows!

6:43 Ngl, I love it when kids are allowed to continue voice-acting a character as their changing voice really does add to the childhood experience they're representing. For shows that actually involve characters that age like Adventure Time, it's authentic to see their voices evolve. Compare that to The Amazing World Of Gumball that recycles the child actors when they start to hit puberty, or The Simpsons with adults in the sound booth that will never change their line deliveries. All three of these are successful tactics for voicing children in animated shows but I just generally prefer the Clarence way

Clarence is quite underrated. I appreciate that each of the characters are different in terms of looks, personality etc. What I think a lot don’t appreciate is what you stated the surrealism in reality that is fascinating in our growing years. Time slows down during those moments of discovery. There’s actually a theory of perception where our perception of time speeds up when we have a set routine such as when we become adults. When you’re a kid every day seems to last forever because you’re always doing something different to explore more. The key to getting the most out of your time on earth is not to extend it persay, but to embrace all that life has to offer. Notice the slight change in colors of the leaves, the caterpillar climbing a blade of grass, the ripples in the water etc. Clarence gives perspective to absorbing as much as you can during childhood and maybe is how you can continue to do so while you’re an adult if you see how Clarence influences the adults in his life.

Clarence was one of those shows that has both traumatized me and also helped me sleep. (that damn deviled egg episode, holy shit). I could actually feel some odd nostalgia from everyone's side. (Everyone being the kid characters like Jeff and Clarence). Sumo I could relate to because of my mom, who's mostly lived paycheck to paycheck, never really having a job, though. She used to live in this weird rundown neighbourhood with a tightknit community. Jeff reminds me of the home that I have with my dad, who's not like the exact opposite of my mom's, but it's still higher living. Although Clarence on the other hand is more true to my roots on both sides. The modest living where the parents still love as wholly as they can despite any struggles they'd be experiencing.

Back when I was a kid watching Clarence, it weirdly encouraged me to go outside and live life. As a kid I hated going outside until I would watch an episode of Clarence and think, Hey, maybe I can do some unhinged stuff and make some memories just like these characters.

This show was so fun to watch as a kid, the hate it got was unnecessary and I remember being made fun of for watching. Its so nostalgic and sweet rewatching it these days. Also its just funny and creative. Another W for CN as always when it comes to their cartoons. Very Special. This and FlapJack were underrated shows I knew by heart where people didn't know what I was talking about.

  • @NYRfan85
    @NYRfan85 Před rokem +3

This show was criminally underrated and underappreciated. I was way beyond the target age when I watched it (I'm 37 now), but it gave off great feels of nostalgia of being a kid at that age. Just kids being kids, and doing both fun things (like the Fun Dungeon) to the mundane, everyday things (grocery shopping), and how doing those things were like as a kid. The realism in how they represented all of the different family dynamics was excellent. I had friends growing up who were poor like Sumo, and friends who were rich and unfulfilled like Belson, but we all were just kids being kids in the end.
As an adult, I loved all of the different styles, and how each character was based off another well-known IP--for example, Chad being modeled off of Donkey Kong, one kid was like Charlie Brown (even with how his spotlight episode was told), Belson was like a Muppet, etc. Really cool details put into each character and how their stories were told!

I loved this show! I can’t believe how funny it is and manages to be heartwarming too.
I’ll never forget how hard I laughed when Clarence ran into a mountain lion that escaped from the zoo and he says “oh no!” And the screen fades to black. Then it fades in from black and he says “oh no!” the exact same way, as if this were a movie for tv fading to black for a commercial but this episode is 11 minutes long and has no commercial… like this show has 1 million jokes like that where I can overexplain them but you just had to be there in the moment to get it. The writers really hd a blast making this show.
Like you said it really nails the feeling of being a kid in ways other shows haven’t been able to nail. Highly recommend this show.

Clarence was a half and half favorite. They were ups and downs about it and more nasty scenes which made me uncomfortable. But the show reminds me a lot from my childhood. I liked most characters that Clarence made friends with in the show such as Jeff, Sumo, Chelsea, Kimby, Dustin, Nathan, Belson, Percy, Amy Gillis, Breehn, and more. I really wish they made a Clarence movie on HBO Max or another streaming service due to WB Discovery having some incidents. Overall, I am thankful that we had a show that taught us about our childhood.

I appreciate positive videos about Clarence. It's always been one of my favorite CN shows because it perfectly captures what it's like being a kid. They do things real kids do. I always remember this one episode where Clarence went to the restroom and instead of washing his hands, he just curiously looked at the water running and turned it off. Little things like that really makes the show for me.

I love this cartoon, it really sucks people brought it down. The character designs, background art, soundtrack, and writing is all good. The art style isn’t everyone’s taste and people just don’t like watching kids act like real kids but people just called it bad because of it and it’s a shame. The cartoon gave me a nostalgic feeling for how well it portrays different childhoods. It’s a shame the creator was a sleaze but I still love this cartoon.

I wasn't that interested in this show that much but I remember one episode called "Dream boat" that was incredible. It's rare that I root for a character as much as I did during that episode. Sumo just wanted to build a boat, he slaved away for days despite everyone either ignoring or laughing at him and his dream. You really feel bad for him and in some respects relate to him alot during that episode.
Its one of those weird rare episodes of otherwise cheerful shows that get super serious just for that one story. Another that comes to mind was "Burrito" in we bear bears.

My thoughts on clarence is that i love it, each episode is just 10 minutes which I personally like because i have a short attention span, then also because there's so much happening in each episode that also helps. Furthermore i don't really like growing up so seeing this kind of takes me back to my childhood aswell. I can also relate to some traits of the characters, like how jeff doesn't want to be touched. A moment that stood out to me the most is probably the way they show each character and how different their lives are. Overall i enjoy watching clarence and i would watch the whole 4 seasons again and again and again and again... and so on...

There are only three CN shows I can think of where I saw the pilot right when it came out and followed the show through to the end, loving it the whole way: Steven Universe, Infinity Train...and Clarence. One of these things is not like the other, am I right? xD
A CZcams comments section is not the place for me to unpack how special this show is or how much it means to me, but...yeah, this show was something special. Its perspective and humor and weirdly dark storytelling sometimes, there's just so much that went into it to make it an entirely, wonderfully unique experience.

It sucks it was always dumped in favor of Steven Universe (though I like Steven Universe myself but still).
