I actually used to LOVE this movie as a child, and I watched it all the time, and to this day, honestly, I don't understand why literally EVERYONE hates it. But I guess it's the nostalgia talking...
People who hate it are people with stupid expectations about a giant lizard terrorizing a huge city should be some kind of phenomenon like Titanic.

I love this movie too, I was almost 7 when the movie came out so alot of it is nostalgia for the 90s and the association of the movie with those times. It has a phenomenal score with that 90s magic. I still like the movie. I cried when they killed Godzilla at the end though

You are absolutely correct, if it wasn't named Godzilla it would have been one of the greatest monster movies ever made, spawning multiple sequels and toys. The problem is that it was named Godzilla and thus is a colossal failure. Quite disappointing, because it really isn't that bad of a movie, but it isn't Godzilla on a fundamental level.

I haven't seen this movie, but my dad told me that it was a godzilla rip off. He said godzilla looked more like a dinosaur (which I can see right now), he was animated horribly, they tried to lure him with fish in some part. WITH FISH!!! Am I missing anything else?

This movie was my first exposure to anything Godzilla related, and to be honest, I liked it, and to be even more honest, I still like it, though I agree it doesn't deserve to be called Godzilla.

This was and still is one of my favorite movies growing up.
Interesting bit of Trivia: Kenpachiro Satsuma (the guy in the original Godzilla suit) walked out of the film when it was in theaters and Shusuke Kaneko (the director of the Gamera films) stated " Americans are unable to accept the fact that there is an animal that cannot be killed by their arms". This is in reference to the military killing Godzilla with missiles which many fans including me find stupid.
Another interesting factoid: the scene where the japanese guys state "that is what the American experts claim" is from All Out Attack and is a direct reference to how the Godzilla from this movie is not Godzilla, and the scenes of the Real Godzilla killing Emmerich's Godzilla is from Godzilla Final Wars where the Emmerich Lizard is renamed Zilla and gets it's ass kicked by the real Godzilla.
Mst3kfanatic1 you know, there is no possible way an animal that big of any kind can survive a modern military. Modern as in 1916 or newer technology, a gdp and population of Switzerland. Really. Switzerland vs a realistic Godzilla ( other then the fact that a creature that big would suffocate under its own weight like a beached whale ) 1960 ish Switzerland would still win.

Also, there's a reason why G-Fans hate Zilla. He wasn't Godzilla. Not just because he's from a different species(Godzilla was a Dinosaur, not Zilla), but it was due to not having a purpose. Originally, Godzilla was a power force of nature created from the Nuclear Bomb. He represents the fears/terrors of such weaponry. Think of Nagasaki or Hiroshima. Not to mention that Godzilla is by far stronger than Zilla. Godzilla takes on Missles, Bullets, Survives in lava for years, took a falling meteor and black hole to the face. He's the KING OF ALL MONSTERS for a reason.
very valid points. By the look of it the Godzilla and Zilla fight in Final Wars in 2004 took place in Sydney, Australia. I recognize the Opera House because I live like 15 mins away from it. So why were they fighting there?

Yes, after this movie was released Toho decided to change its name to Zilla. Supposedly the Americans mistakenly believed it was Godzilla. just look up Godzilla: Final Wars- Godzilla vs Zilla. It's a really funny scene.
He loses so bad too. They practically showed the entire encounter, maybe cut a few seconds. The person that summons him to do battle even says something along the line of; "I should've known the tuna eating loser wouldn't stand a chance."

Seeing these Honest Trailers for all these mid-1990s movies makes me realize how much I miss the days when all movies didn’t look the same.

An interesting note about his name in the movie: the head creature designer is Patrick Tatopoulous, and they named Mathew Broderick's character after his youngest daughter Niko Tatopoulous
You see despite all the hate this film gets after 20+ years, I still enjoy it because it takes me back to being 8 years old and I loved it and will continue to do so.

You didn't understand correctly. I meant that in 2014 Godzilla's sequel, they'll definitely make a much better fight scene. They introduced the first fight scene PERFECTLY but didn't deliver because they montaged it on a TV. The rest just wasn't executed too well IMO.

Yeah, I dont think people would have hated this movie as much if it wasnt named after Godzilla, if it was just its stand alone thing then people would just remember it as a 90s disaster monster destruction porn movie nothing more nothing less. And I suppose when you come down to it Zilla is a pretty well designed monster because it can run fast and knows how to hide and is kind of clever.
The thing is Zilla is in many ways is kind of the opposite of what Godzilla should be because Godzilla is supposed to be an unstoppable juggernaut who pretty much cannot be harmed by the military's weapons. This Zilla however can easily be harmed by the Military's weapons and has to run away and hide instead of just powering through like Godzilla.

I liked it when it first came out. Sadly, time has not been kind to it. Personally, I find that the only good things about it were Godzilla's redesign and the miniatures that were used (albeit briefly). The animated series that followed was much better.

I really hate it when people say shit like ''Oh, Zilla is better because he's more realistic, yidy yady yah! Godzilla's too unrealistic, whine whine whine!'', people, no one gives a fuck about realism. Not just Godzilla movies, but any action monster movie there to be entertainment, as you see monsters destroy cities, and fight other monsters. In fact, any movie is there to be entertaining, if it's about Iron Man, Superman, etc. If movies nowadays are just about ''realism'', then you might as well make a Superman movie, where you take all of his iconic powers away and instead make him some hero that jumps high, and can lift up only a chair.

I'm actually baffled reading the comments under this video saying that. I'm sorry, but if people prefer the Godzilla from 1998 over the Godzilla from 2014, you didn't grow up watching the Godzilla movies and aren't a real Godzilla fan. The Godzilla in the 2014-along with his story and how he was-was waaaaaay truer to the Godzilla I grew up watching than the 1998 movie ever was.

I went to a new godzilla only because i thought heisenberg was the main character of the movie, you could only imagine my disappointment when i realised he died 20 minutes into the movie

I was a young child, 7 years old when this movie came out. Mom and Dad got the VHS the day it released...rewatched it today after binge watching Godzilla movies this weekend, and I must say it is entertaining, but in my mind this is a different species of reptile altogether. It's a big monsterverse, this monster could have been confused with the true Godzilla. Who knows. Still one of my favorite childhood movies, and will always love it.
I may have made this comment before but you tub brought me here - this movie does have one of my all time fave scenes in it.. when the Bubzillas go slip sliding away on the gumballs, the sports balls etc. it always cracks me up

Yup I cannot fully dislike or hate this movie because honestly I know Godzilla from this movie. Honestly when the I watch the first Japanese Godzilla (Godzilla 2000) I actually thinking that Japanese actually copying Godzilla (as like Power Rangers to Super Sentai) but yeah, I finally started to change view about this Godzilla and so love the Japanese one.
Have to say it, to everyone saying the Japanese had no fault in this movie, they do have fault. Sony was in constant communication with Toho about this movie, and they knew damn well what was going on with it. True they didn't make it, but they never did anything to try and make it better. Also do remember that not every Godzilla movie is amazing. there have been several... less than perfect ones.

@@jacobkleinsasser5658 The fact that godzilla movies aren't perfect doesn't mean you should disrespect the source material. Emmerich literally blackmailed them, he showed the design and said "either we do it like this or we don't do it". They didn't answer at first, but accepted afterward, thinking the only change would be the design. Toho has obvsiouly fault in this, but think about it, the opportunity of having your character presented in a big budget american movie directed by the guy who just made independance, it's not something that happens everyday.
This movie is one of my guilty pleasure movies.

I liked it too. Last time I watched it I was a teen and didn't have internet though (long time ago). And they are right I liked it because of Jurassic Park.
I liked It As Well, So Don't Worry. Is It Strange That I Thought This Movie Was Made In 2012? And I Knew About It And Watched It Only After Watching All The Episodes Of The TV Show made After It? I like This One Because Not Only Does The Godzilla (OrZillaAsSomeOfTheHatersCallHim/Her) Look More Like A Dinosaur (Even Though I Know It's A Iguana) It's not fighting a Monster every 20 Minutes. Yes I Know The Godzilla Franchise Are Supposed to be monster movies but it gets annoying that a monster pops up and godzilla just happens to be there to fight it.
It's a decent film on a popcorn mindless action spectacle film kinda level.
I've seen a lot worse.
