It's crazy that Roland Emmerich refused to film this script because he wanted to do "his own thing" and he ended up remaking The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms for his version of Godzilla.
Also, if he wanted to do a more serious Godzilla all he had to do was take a look at the original film. Honestly, the studio shouldn't have insisted so much into giving the film to someone who clearly wasn't interested.

When Siskel and Ebert reviewed the film on their show, they gave it their worst review, called the filmmakers spoofing them "petty", and said *"If you're going to go through the trouble of putting us in a monster movie, why don't you at least take advantage of having the monster either eat or squash us"*

It’s just that Tri-Star wanted their own Jurassic Park and not even the studio cared about the monster. I still remember to this day Emmerich ranting about how he has to hear about how his movie sucked all over again when the 2014 film was about to release. Godzilla definitely destroyed his reputation, that’s for sure.

There was an earlier attempt of a American Godzilla film back in
1983 called *"GODZILLA: King of the Monsters in 3-D"* with Steve Miner
    - who directed the first two *"Friday*

Raymond Burr (who played "Steve Martin" in the 1956 Americanized

I think its not too important how Godzilla come to be, but it is very important that Godzilla IS Godzilla. Posture, Backspines, AND Heatray. These three things are that, what makes Godzilla, Godzilla. Without one of the three, its not Godzilla anymore.

@@Kenichi2002 change the script a little bit and make the drone malfunction, get discovered by Atlantians, they mostly figure it out and make their own monster that won’t be controlled by the aliens. They can’t control him either however, and after his creation he destroys Atlantis, but, when the aliens send another drone Godzilla, who has free will, fights their monster off because he’s territorial. His existence being both a blessing and a curse, as he has his own interests at heart, causing him to save mankind one minute, and fight us the next. Maybe he’d get his atomic breath while destroying Atlantis and not from his creation, like when he’s destroying their power plants he gets irradiated and gains atomic breath.
He still stands in as a nuke with the Atlantians standing in for Americans, who created the nuke, but throughout the Cold War thought it would be our own destruction.
It’d be more difficult to criticize the change in origin as it still conveys the same messaging, even if it’s a bit less direct.
This would also pave the way for King Ghidorah and Gigan, the monsters the aliens made to kill rogue monsters prior to their invasion.

@@davidjames579 I once imagined a perfect timeline in which Tim Burton's take on Godzilla doesn't suck and possibly working out if it was something more in vein of Shin Godzilla, with Godzilla initially being a googly-eyed radioactive monstrosity crawling out of the sea (and I'd have it wreck some seaside town in Louisiana instead of New York or some other cliched big city, just to subvert expectations but eh, LOL) and then coming back evolved into a giant zombie-like saurian titan, and all the attempts of bombing/shooting it down failing because it's tough as hell. Can still have Johnny Depp as the main human character if he wants to, tho I would love to see Michael Keaton and some other Tim Burton collaborator coming back in the role of a politician or something.
The monster, just like in Shin, would be the result of Americans poorly trying to get rid of radioactive waste into the deep sea, and I thought it'd be neat and respectful if Japan or otherwise a Japanese character offered the freezing solution to stop it. None of that "The French are to blame!" to remove America's fault in creating Godzilla.
Plus imagine what killer soundtrack Danny Elfman might've provided. In this version I also imagine having a song like "Who will know" to give a sympathetic/tragic angle to Godzilla since Tim Burton is into that thing when it comes to monsters.

@@DeepEye1994 There's actually a drawing Tim Burton made with Godzilla on the Internet. He actually looks like a fat alligator. And is teal green with yellow dorso plates. I remember one drawing he did of an alien that resembled one from Invasion of Astro Monster. And since Burton grew up with monster movies from the 30s-60s, it's most likely Burton grew up with the Showa era films like Invasion of Astro Monster. (Which Godzilla and King Ghidorah made a cameo in Pee Wee, and in Mars Attacks the aliens' weakness is high frequent sound like how they were defeated in Astro Monster.) And any references he makes with Kaiju monsters are depicted as classy B-movies like the earlier Godzilla films. Like even though many think Burton makes dark films, they're still quirky or darkly goofy.
And so if I had to guess, he wouldn't make Godzilla a scary horror monster, but more of a love letter to the Godzilla he grew up with and embrace the sci-fi elements
UPDATE: I just found a video with Tim Burton visiting the set of Godzilla vs Mothra (1992) and when asked which one he liked, it was Astro Monster. (Monster Zero) 😁

The only issue I have with the plan they had was that it could have confused me at a time when Godzilla’s best franchise imo was finishing up, soon with one of Godzilla’s best movies ever made.

One of Alien 3's unproduced screenplay's was reworked into a novel and released to the public. I wouldn't mind this script getting the same treatment. Although I assume Tristar owns that particular script, and them no longer having the Godzilla licence would likely muddy things.
On the other hand, the idea that Godzilla was created by an ancient civilization specifically to protect Earth is very similar to Gamera the Guardian of the Universe. And that movie is great, so maybe it's a good thing this version never got made.

Perhaps in a future project, we will eventually see the Stan Winston Godzilla design and the Gryphon (I don't know if Sony still owns the rights to that creature. If they do, Legendary has now set up shop at Sony, so perhaps we can nudge them to feature the Gryphon in some future movie).

I even read the original script and the comic version, and this one is better than the 1998 version, and this is how the first Heisei Gamera movie took inspiration from Godzilla's origin. If Tristar had a budget over 200 million, then the movie would've been successful, and the blame for all of this is money.

It’s funny to think that the backstory they came up with for Godzilla was almost 1:1 the same as what happened to Gamera in the 90s with Guardian of the Universe which released the following year. There it was awesome, so clearly the idea was sound. Obviously the two came up with it independent of each other, but it’s just funny how things like that happen sometimes.
Anyway this was such a missed opportunity. The fight between Godzilla and the Gryphon sounded really cool, especially with Godzilla basically going full Vlad the impaler and spiking its head on the Statue of Liberty.

Didn't realize how obsessed TriStar was when it came to penny pinching. Ronald Emmerich's film made money, but the budget of his film was basically the same as Jan De Bont's. They made around 400 million in merchandising on this film but fan backlash was pronounced. TriStar basically killed their franchise from the get-go.

Other unmade *"GODZILLA"* films that deserve a video here includes:
Roland Emmerich's *"GODZILLA 2",* (a treatment by Tab Murphy) which took place 2 years after the 1st film with the surviving baby Godzilla from the first film, now an adult (with its own litter of 3-story tall "Teen-Zillas", including the smallest of the group named "Runt") living in Australia, and eventually go face to face with the new antagonistic kaiju: A giant insectoid, literally named "Queen Bitch".
Joe Dante's *"GODZILLA Reborn",* a direct sequel to the U.S. Cut of Toho's *"GODZILLA 2000: Millennium",* where Godzilla goes on a rampage in Hawaii, gets into a comatosed state thanks to the military (changed from originally getting killed halfway in the story and then cloned back to life), only to then
be revived to take on a lava-bat kaiju named Miba who emerged from the still active Mauna Loa.

Real sad that this version of TriStar Godzilla didn't make it to the big screen.
That said, there are two good things that came out of Emmerich's GINO:
    1. Godzilla: The Series, an incredible animated series where the surviving baby from the '98 movie grows up and becomes worthy of the name Godzilla, fighting against other giant monsters, and mixes aspects of the Japanese Godzilla (the atomic breath, invulnerability against the military) and his father (speed and agility, digging). Not to mention a likable main cast on team H.E.A.T.
    2. The film made Toho, who had killed Godzilla at the end of the Heisei era in 1995, angry enough to revive Godzilla the following year with Godzilla 2000 (1999), kicking off the Millennium era.
Fun fact: GINO, officially named Zilla by Toho (for taking away the God from Godzilla), made its debut in the Millennium era in Godzilla: Final Wars... where its completely annihilated by the real Godzilla in less than a minute 🤣.
Plus, the mistakes made in the 1998 film served as an example of what not to do with an American Godzilla film.
Say what you will about Godzilla '2014 and the Monsterverse, its a better representation of Godzilla than whatever Emmerich made.

In hindsight, it’s interesting that the Godzilla ‘94 script resembles the basic plot and premise of the Heisei Gamera trilogy, what with the respective characters’ origins of being the genetically-engineered creations of advanced ancient civilizations in both. Not to mention I’m fairly sure that Toho took at least some inspiration from the Gryphon when they created Orga as a villain for Godzilla 2000, even if it’s never been confirmed AFAIK.
