  • This is a review of Super Monkey Ball Adventure which was developed by Traveller's Tales, published by Sega and released in 2006 for the GameCube, PS2 and PSP. This entry in the Super Monkey Ball series is the only one to have a full on story mode with openly designed levels to explore, more similar to what you would normally find in a collect-a-thon platformer and because of that, it seems to be quite disliked by fans. However, entering the game with an open mind, is it as bad as people say?

    I really like how in depth this review is, as well as the fact that you provide a pretty balanced and fair look at a game that is deeply and heavily flawed. Good shit!

    Perfect review of this game and basically reflects my thoughts on the game. It's just a confusing mess with no sense of direction. But through sheer determination you make it through. An ambitious game but ultimately a bit of a nightmare experience.
    I also experienced that glitch with the sound files. It happened to me on the city level an freaked me out.

      Thanks so much! That definitely sums it up perfectly, it's ambitious but really flawed in almost every way!
      Yeah, that audio glitch is probably one of the strangest game glitches I've ever experienced haha! It's like the game becomes haunted or something!

      Thanks so much! Super Monkey Tweets is pretty much the only active SMB Twitter page which is insane, so it was great to get a mention from him! Yeah it really does seem to be getting more popular recently doesn't it, I guess it's a mix of the awesome Nick Robinson videos and the fact that Banana Blitz HD came out fairly recently too.

    I actually enjoyed SMB Adventure. It sort of just felt... great! The open world was quite good, the challenge moe was fun, the party games are great, and the psp version is even better because there are so many things to do and collect.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 3 lety +2

      I enjoyed it too but I definitely came away from it knowing it had flaws. The challenge mode was really surprising because I honestly expected it to be rubbish, but yeah! It was good! I want to play the PSP version. Weirdly it’s probably the definitive version of the game haha!

    Wow, you clearly put a lot of effort and time into your reviews man. And I love that you cover older more obscure games like this. Subbed and liked for sure. 34 minutes of straight talking on Super Monkey Ball ADVENTURE of all things and it being interesting and on point with every piece of information people could want from a review is a tough thing to do, so mad props.

      I want to cover some more obscure stuff in the future. Recently I've been looking at stuff that's a bit more popular so it'll be nice going back to something more weird! Haha, yeah I notice a lot of people who talk about Super Monkey Ball Adventure just trash talk it and seemingly don't give it much of a chance, so I wanted to give it a fair shot!

    In the PS2 version, you were able to fortify your tower in tower defense mode with iron blocks and defensive punching gloves depending on how many points you got. That, and you were able to choose which form each tower took, ranging from the Jenga tower look to a castle-like fort

  • @fernando98322

    Finally I found someone who has talked about this game extensively, giving it the spotlight it deserves. From someone who hasn't played any other Super Monkey Ball game, I agree with everything you said (except calling it outright bad, I think it's more mediocre than bad). There are some missions that are super infuriating in story mode, others are clunky messes. But I've always had a great time rolling around with a monkey inside a ball. Challenge Mode gives you that traditional SMB experience people love but I guess it's shorter than what they're used to, and the minigames are a blast (btw in the tower minigame you can put special blocks on your tower for defense like metal or punching blocks. You can also try to shoot yourself at the trajectory of incoming players, it's the kinda clunky fun I love about the game). I'm heavily blinded by nostalgia though, but yeah I really enjoy this game and I wish more people would know about it. I think it's a hidden gem. And an HD port with online would do wonders.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 4 lety

      Yeah I try to really go as extensive as I can when I review games haha! Maybe the reason I lean more towards calling it bad is that I have played the other ones, so I'm looking at it in the context of the overall series and it's nowhere near as good as the first two games. I agree though that there's quite a lot of missions that are super infuriating though, it was pretty tough getting through some parts of the game!
      The challenge mode is actually surprisingly great and some of the levels are the same level of quality as what were in the original games which is awesome. But with it only having 49 stages it's more of a side distraction and it probably should have been a bit more of a focus.
      You can put metal and punching blocks in your tower? How do you do that? That would probably make it even more fun! I do think the minigames generally are really good though and the game definitely doesn't get the credit it deserves! A HD version could be amazing but I think they should hold off on that for a while, can you imagine how angry the community would be if they first remastered Banana Blitz (the worst game in the whole series) and then remade Adventure (another game in the series that no one seems to like). There would be riots!

      @@PixelPursuitit's been 3 years and I've never seen your response thanks yt haha. Anyways I don't remember exactly how to put special blocks on the towers for defense since it's been so long. But I definitely do remember metal blocks that don't crumble if you're shot at them. I also remember punching blocks. And of course powerups like shooting the ball and it becomes big to try and crumble a huge chunk of a tower. I think you need to shoot yourself at balloons that are floating around? Or maybe it was only in a special mode... But I assure you, you can!

    An absolutely perfect review! Every issue I had with the game you mentioned which made me feel much more validated 😅
    Went on a real rollercoaster with this one; while exploring Jungle Island at the start, I was loving the game, but then I hit a wall when I opened up Moonhaven and Zootopia - I hated Moonhaven all together, an absolute pain to traverse, and I was struggling to find the chants since they’re not given to you automatically, so I probably spent about an hour trying to do missions that I just couldn’t do because I didn’t have the chants for it. Almost gave up but I whipped out a guide to assist me which made the game so much better.
    Using the guide I was able to see where the chants were located, as well as what missions required what chants so that I could actually tackle missions is was able to do instead of just wasting time.
    In the end I only finished on around 76% percent I think? Basically just doing the minimum amount of missions, but a lot of them were not fun or frustrating that I just didn’t see the point in doing them.
    Overall though, I did enjoy my time, but there were certainly a lot of issues that I had. The guide was really the life saver for me, so I’m glad to hear that you had to get one up at some stage as well, as well as having the same gripes as me - atleast I could share the pain with you 😅
    P.S. I loved how we both experienced the same thing with that photographer near the rollercoaster! 😅 I also had had to glide over and land on the ledge to reach him, but then I also just used the glide again to land onto the platform for the photo (your way seemed easier, it took a chunk of tries to land on the photo spot from a glide position) 😂

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah it really is a mess of a game isn't it haha!
      I literally got to the exact same point as you when I decided to just look at a guide. It's ridiculous that you can activate missions before having the required abilities to actually do them. I thought I was just doing stuff wrong and spend ages just re-attempting the same missions, only to find that you needed an ability from an entirely different level! How are you supposed to know that!
      Yeah a ton of the missions are absolutely infuriating just because of how unspecific the missions are. They very rarely actually tell you exactly what you're supposed to be doing!
      Haha! Yeah the guide made the game way, way better didn't it! I would never ever recommend anyone plays this without using some kind of walkthrough. You'd have to play it for hours and hours just to make any progress at all!
      That darn photographer was so annoying! I had to try so many times to get to him and then not only do you have to repeat the mission if you fail but you have to actually get to him all over again just to activate it again! It drove me bonkers! Why didn't they just add in a restart mission function on the pause menu! Insanity!

    • @LongplayExpress
      @LongplayExpress Před 3 lety +1

      @@PixelPursuit A mission restart option like THPS would have made a world of difference! The Moonhaven level, especially the balloon collecting one, was an absolute nightmare for me without the restart fuction. I really struggled to collect those balloons, it was so easy to die, and then so difficult to find my way back up to him when I did die due to the terrible respawn system... 😕
      At least it’s all done now, only got BB HD left and my journey will be complete 😊 See you again soon, back where it all began! 😁

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh my god that balloon mission... That brings back some very bad memories! I had the exact same issue, it was so frustrating because not only was the actual mission difficult but then having the extra punishment of having to go all the way back up to have another go... It's a very bad time!
      It's so weird how they attempted a game like this and then never did it ever again. I feel like it could have worked if they had a second shot at it. I would much rather have a good game using the standard Monkey Ball gameplay for now though!

    • @LongplayExpress
      @LongplayExpress Před 3 lety +1

      @@PixelPursuit It would be awesome to see them try and tackle something like this again! But definitely AFTER a standard Monkey Ball game comes out first, wouldn’t want a Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts reaction 😅 So much potential with the mechanics though, the game works quite well in an open world formula, but it definitely had a lot of issues with its first attempt. Here’s hoping that one day we’ll see Super Monkey Ball games releasing frequently again 😊

    Very interesting review of a Monkey Ball game not many people tend to talk about. I particularly enjoyed how you brought up both the game's flaws, as well as the components of it that worked, most people tend to write off the game completely as garbage, which is a bit unfair. The game is not terrible in my opinion, but sort of average, depending upon what your pros or cons may be.
    Although nothing fantastic, I really enjoy the story, or at least all the different plots going on. The attempt to expand the Monkey Ball series and add new locations, characters; basically a livable world for the main group is something I find to be Adventure's strong suit. It's certainly a better story premise than both 2 and Blitz in my opinion.
    Some of the gameplay can even be fun, or at the very least is functional. But, it never really amounts to the sort of expectation one would typically have with a monkey ball game. Everything just feels lackluster when compared to the more streamlined experiences of SMB 1 and 2. This is most noticeable in regards to the game mechanics and graphics, and with all the story elements relying on these inferior mechanics, it can bring the whole experience down, especially when a few story missions are made murderously annoying by the way the game works.
    It just all lacks any sort of polish, which you can even see in the character designs. It's quite obvious that the in-game models did not translate the look of the characters from the artwork well at all. Any amount of uniqueness/personality in the specific character art seemed incredibly watered down in-game. Heck, when I was using the map directory in the game manual as a kid, I had to do a double-take to make sure I was talking to the right NPC. SMB 2 managed to have expressive models and cleaner graphics, so there really is no reason why this game couldn't have been better. Unless it was rushed of course, which I'm willing to believe was the case.
    All in all, I really enjoyed this review. The game is obviously flawed, but it certainly has it's good points sprinkled in at times.

      Sorry this has taken me so long to reply to! The past few weeks have been pretty insane to be honest!
      But yeah! I always try and look for the positives in games, even when they're regarded as being pretty bad like this one. The issues with this game are pretty annoying because I feel like with a few simple tweaks, it wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad. Like just having a better map system and allowing you to instantly restart missions would solve so many of the games problems!
      I totally agree with you that I really liked how this game expanded the lore of the games to such a degree. I really liked that and this is really the only game where you get a good feel for what the world of Monkey Ball is actually like.
      It was almost definitely rushed. When you consider it came out at around the same time as Banana Blitz but on the previous generation of hardware, it was probably a situation where they needed it to release ASAP so it didn't directly compete with the other game and so that the GameCube era consoles weren't considered old.
      Thanks so much for enjoying the video! :D

    This is where the jumping in Banana Blitz would've helped. They should've switched around the story and challenge modes between games, though designed differently for Monkey Ball Adventure because of no jumping. How would that sound?

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 3 lety

      Yeah that would have actually worked really well. Having the jump in Adventure would have made certain parts far easier, which is a good thing considering how frustrating some bits were! So I'm all for it! :)
      So you're saying that the Banana Blitz levels could have been in Adventure and vice versa? I don't know, some of those Adventure levels would have been extremely difficult with motion controls! It would be good to see some of the levels from Adventure in a new game though, because some of them were actually pretty well designed!

    I really liked the story in SMB Adventure, but I'm not gonna lie after you get to Kongri-la it gets really weird but that just makes it better in my opinion. Like are we not gonna question that a bunch of monkeys who are living underwater got so cold that they had to TIE UP THE FRIGGIN SUN just to keep warm?! Again it's weird but I love it.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 2 lety

      Yeah I also liked the weirder parts of the game's story, I feel like it fits with the whole vibe of the original games, afterall the story in Monkey Ball 2 was pretty strange as well haha!

      I just thought of something. What if the mysterious stranger turned out to be Baby as an old man? He wears blue like Baby does and he does happen to know a lot about the past SMB lore. It's a possibilty.

    My GameCube copy of this game it had an issue where it booted up, played fine but always couldn't be read by the GameCube. Every 15-20 seconds I had to open and close my GameCube throughout my whole playthrough of the game. I literally beaten the game that way! It been since 2013 since I touched the game. I don't even have that GameCube or game anymore.
    Ah the memories! This was also the first time I legitimately put MY OWN time and effort in a game.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh jeez, that must have been a very annoying experience! Not only is the game itself frustrating but also you're having to put up with opening and closing the GameCube constantly! At least the game is still fairly cheap, so you could always get it again if you wanted to relive the memories!
      That's awesome, you probably have a lot of nostalgia for this game! :D

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 2 lety +1

      The challenge mode is actually pretty good isn't it! The levels are way better than some of the ones from the later games so it's annoying to see them get overlooked a lot of the time!

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 2 lety +1

      They definitely went for different tones didn't they! Adventure was probably making the mistake of taking itself too seriously whereas Super Monkey Ball 2 just ran with the weirdness of it's concept.

  • @anthonygillottthefanofmonk2932

    I actually liked this game.
    Because the character animation designs are amazing.
    Even though it has a lot of bugs,
    but I'm sure I can get over it.
    The 100% ending is great!

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 2 lety

      I agree! I can't say that I walked away from the game having liked it, but I definitely at least appreciated it. It was probably just a little bit too ambitious for it's own good. The animation of the characters is really good though, potentially some of the best in the whole series!

    I had this game when I was younger and I used to be one of those people who just wrote it off as trash and a bad game, but after giving it another chance and 100% the adventure mode, it’s really not that bad. I’d say it’s an average game, a nice distraction. Yeah for a Super Monkey Ball game it’s probably not that good, especially Challenge Mode, but honestly I’d rather play this game than pretty much any of the Wii titles because I will never enjoy how the Wii titles handled motion controls in the main game.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před 2 lety

      I completely agree with you there! I much prefer Adventure over Banana Blitz specifically! Adventure is flawed but you can tell that the developers were ambitious with it, whereas Banana Blitz is just a watered down and much worse version of the original games.

    I got stuck in the last utopia part where you have to climb that dreaded place/tower, I returned to this game like once a month to try that place again, idk what I did wrong but it was impossible to beat that part. I TRIED EVERYTHING. I think that was the only mission I was unable to complete in the entire game
    Though I will say, little me enjoyed this game a ton until I got stuck there

      Yeah, I would kind of agree with that so far. They go really downhill after SMB2 which is a shame because it kinda feels like it never got a true sequel after that, only these weird spin-offs.
      Haha, yeah it would be for sure! I have no idea why that happened!
