In terms of the car designs, I love how wacky the vehicles are in ASR compared to the others. Seeing Shadow in his chopper racing Eggman in a monster truck is just so novel compared to the more unified designs in the sequels
Both All-Stars Racing and Transformed just have so much charm. Both of the openings showcase some the roster and mechanics of the game. Also, fun fact about the All-Stars Racing. The game never saw a Japanese release so the opening theme for game was added to the soundtrack of Transformed as a bonus track for those who never got to play the game. Which is odd considering Zobio and Zobiko's game never got released outside of Japan even though the game itself does have an English language version on the BIOS of the Rom that is selectable and they're the only characters to be from a game that never got released internationally. But SEGA and the devs of All-Stars Racing wanted a rep from House of the Dead and the two were the only ones that could fit in without raising the game's Age Rating and because Loving Deads: The House of the Dead EX was still being developed alongside All-Stars Racing Zobiko's ENG VA wasn't able to record lines for the game or having any available lines in English which resulted in Zobiko being silent throughout all of the races she's in. Although because of the limitations of the DS it actually makes sense for Zobiko to not speak because she's not there to begin with! Another fact about both games, although depending on how you look at it it may not be so fun, is because the House of the Dead series is banned in Germany the series is often called "Curien Mansion" or even abbreviated as "HOTD" which is why all of the SEGA crossover games while have the name of the mansion itself rather than the name of the series regardless of the region. Anywho, enough trivia about one series, let's start talking about trivia the games themselves. The OST for All-Stars Racing is mostly tracks taken from the original sources, even the All Star Move themes and race intros are taken from their original sources. The only original tracks in All-Stars Racing are the menu themes, result theme and jingles that play after completing missions and earning SEGA Miles. And while there's nothing wrong with the remixes/rearrangements in Transformed and TSR, I do kinda prefer some of the original tracks from the source game rather than the remixes. The stages in TSR are directly ripped from All-Stars Racing (minus Ocean Ruin and Egg Hangar) but with various improvements with Ocean View also being ripped directly from Transformed but without the boat segment almost like you're doing a permanent Time Trial and the Big the Cat cameo due to Big himself being playable once again in TSR. The voice clips in both All-Stars Racing and Transformed are either reused or re-recorded from previous games depending on the character. Some characters were also given new lines due to them either not having a speaking role originally or due to their voices not matching the current voice cast. One example is Big the Cat. Unlike what happened with Sonic Riders where they used clips of Dean Bristow from SA2 instead of having Mike Pollock record new lines for gameplay, they had Big's Voice actor at the time, Oliver Wyman, record new lines for All-Stars Racing and it's pretty noticeable with some lines.
The original is the most memorable. As you said the characters, the commentator, the tracks and music are amazing. I haven't played the original in years but I can't wait to re-live childhood. Transformed is somewhat memorable too but wasn't as fun as I'd hoped. I really didn't enjoy team. I liked the car customization and some characters included but that's all. It's been years since I've played Transformed and the Original but Team Racing felt like a lot slower, a main reason why I loved the OG and Transformed, because they were faster driving than Mario Kart. Are they slower or is it that I'm just older and don't remember
personally transformed is my favorite because I mainly had the pleasure of playing the ds ver. of the original. But I can write an entire essay on a tier list of these three games. But my least favorite is Team Sonic Racing. Only three characters I like in it, Metal Sonic, Zavok, and Vector. While with the others, there are a lot more creative characters.
I understand that the original game has the best all-Star moves and character roster, but to me track design is the most important part of a racing game and Transformed dominates in that category. Each of the tracks are unique and brilliantly designed which is why Transformed is my favorite.
I enjoyed all 3 of the Sonic Racing games, but imagine if we get a 4th Sonic Racing game that takes the best elements of the first 3 games and expand on them. It would make one heck of a game!

I can't help but question how you handled round 3. It looks like you judged the items by how much sense they made in terms of logic and lore rather than critiquing them in regards to balancing and their effects on the race. While I also agree with your placement of Team Sonic Racing being 1st place in items, my reasons are different. Team Sonic Racing may not have strong tracks like the other two, but their itemplay is a lot more dynamic with how your teammates can help mitigate or enhance the effects of items. A quake can easily be dispatched with a few well-placed missiles or a team ultimate, a missile can be blocked by a speed type drift boosting, and if you get hit by an item in general, a teammate can help skimboost you to make sure you're not down for too long. Team Sonic Racing is a lot more combative than the others, and their items as well as the team mechanics that are made to facilitate and even accelerate the interaction with items are responsible for that. I don't get why you critiqued items based on what "made sense" rather than focusing on how they affect the gameplay and its balancing. Do I really need to care about the pufferfish breaking the laws of physics by floating in the air in a universe of anthropomorphic animals? I care more about if the item will hinder how well I enjoy the game, and the answer is that it does not. The pufferfish can be thrown ahead and behind you and can be countered with skill by either dodging it, catching it, or shooting it. It's main strength is hindering the movement options of the opposition by taking up space while its weakness is it mediocrity as a projectile if you shoot it forward. It is balanced like all the items in Transformed. The only reason why I would give the original 2nd place over Transformed is that the All-Stars for the original are significantly better and more original than Transformed, where most of the characters just float and press one button to throw something at someone in Transformed. Now as for round 4, I disagree with how you treated Team Sonic Racing. You spoke anecdotally and said that you cannot remember the track themes and that they are bad. That is not enough in my opinion. Team Sonic Racing uses a shit ton of remixes and unique leitmotifs in their songs that you don't give them credit for. For instance, the stage you were racing on not only uses a remix of Cool Edge from Sonic Unleashed, but has the melody of Reach for the Stars tucked away around the end before it loops. Furthermore, all the tracks are adaptive, having portions that play when you're on the final lap and a unique jingle for when the race finishes. The songs are practically a love letter to their origins that you did not acknowledge and bash on the sole merit of "I can't remember it". You didn't even mention anything about how all the characters have unique remixes of their main theme when they use their ultimate. I would actually put the original at the bottom since it doesn't do anything new with its music. Tldr; I agree with your placement for round 3, but not with your rationale for the placement. And I disagree with your placement and rationale of Team Sonic Racing in round 4. I like the work you put into this though.
My 7 year old son prefers the original because it’s all land based. He struggles to control the planes in the Transformed version…I enjoy transformed but also love the original. I plan to introduce the Nintendo giant Mario Kart to him a little further down the road, it’s inevitable, everyone has to play that game! But Segas racing games are great too, not sure if it’s as good as Mario Kart, but it’s not far behind at all.
I only tried team racing (ps4) and all stars racing (xbox360), I definitely agree that all stars racing is the best of the trilogy because the characters are unique, the cars are so creative like ulala on a "spaceship" and big on a tiny motorcycle. the tracks range on different categories (my faves were the casino/samba de amigo) and even with those categories the tracks are different from each other. I didn't play the different modes that frequently but I loved the grand prix and the different cups, I think that asr is the most complete one in the trilogy, maybe because I played it since I was a kid!
Finally! Someone else who agrees the original is better than Transformed. I played both for the first time recently, and the first game is now my favorite racing game of all time. Transformed on the other hand was a huge disappointment after the first game, and there's sooo many reasons I could go into about why I personally think it's inferior (though it's of course completely subjective). I think my main issue with Transformed is how long the tracks are, they're a complete slog. Some of them take up to 6 minutes, and they generally just feel tedious to play through, overstaying their welcome. For reference, the average Mario Kart track is 2-3 minutes long. ONE lap of Transformed is almost as long as an entire track in MK. Some people might like this, but for me they just drag on a little too long. Made it hard for me to get motivated and grind in the World Tour mode to unlock characters. I agree with every other point you make in this video too; the character roster, music, items, commentator, etc. are all far superior and give the game so much more charm and liveliness. I also generally just prefer how the original plays and controls, it's so much more fun for me to drift through the courses without them being interrupted and bogged down by mediocre water/flying sections. Transformed definitely has an edge over the original in some areas, but overall I was left extremely let down by it, and was really surprised to hear that a lot of people think it blows ASR1 out of the water. 1st SASRT 2nd SASASR 3rd TSR I know i’m going to get hate for stating my opinion but Transformed’s ost is my favourite and I really enjoyed the transformed gimmick surprisingly as the level design accompanied for this. I think if I tried SASASR on the PS3 my opinion would change as I only tried the DS version which was good for the DS but wasn’t as fun as how the console version looks. One day when I try the PS3 version of SASASR I will come back to this comment and see if my opinion has changed lol

Fun fact: The Garbage Puyo was suppossed to make an appearance instead of the Pufferfish item in S&ASRT, but SEGA hates it whenever anything Puyo Puyo leaves Japan so it was not meant to be.

I play all these 3 games a lot and at some point I even start to speedrunning ASR and ASRT. The og ASR is my favorite for his mechanics, the vibes of all Sega chars that I love and how fast The game is. My main problem is that not all character can do all shorcuts for example at The start of Dark Arsenal at The left you have a ramp that Only less than half of the roster characters can do without a speedshoe. I also love Transformed cuz how different is for other Karting games and I feel like The plain dosnt have the best controll but its not bad and you can go fast when your drifting and changing directions playing with both sticks is a bit tricky but is so weird and fun that I cant describe. My Only problem with Transformed is the roster and some old tracks like Sunshine Tour feels so slow but overall The game is great and The music is by far my favorite of the trilogy. And lastly Team Sonic Racing... I hate this game. The Team mechanic is weird and stupid in my opinion, The tracks are really flat and dosnt give anything new. The Kart custommisation is fine and my biggest problem with this game os that its feel so slow when your not in that weird Team special boost or constantly having a ton of boost panels in your way.

I Remember Playing The Original On My XBOX360 For Hours Because I Never Had A Nintendo To Play Mario Kart On. Eventually, My Little Brother Broke My XBOX Disk and I Was Stuck Playing A Demo Of Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed Which I Hate The Flight Controls. But Now That I Have The Nintendo Switch, I Am Happy (A Little Bit) To Play Team Sonic Racing And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
I recently bought the first Sonic SEGA Racing game yesterday just to relive my childhood days and not spend an eternity with its 2 sequels. I really like how you analyzed all of these games; I think the first Sonic SEGA Racing is the superior than the next 2 sequels because everything about it such as the mechanics and characters are all balanced, compared to Transformed with questionable roster, its slow acceleration and hard as fuck vehicle swapping gimmick, and TSR with its disappointing roster. The All-Stars in the OG game makes a total lot of sense and gives them originality as to what these SEGA characters can do in their respective universe/game than just the Sonic characters. Forcing them on a superpowered plane or a super boost is a big letdown, though I think the super boost in TSR is much better than Transformed. My 360 copy for the OG Sonic SEGA Racing will be arriving this Saturday. They should definitely rerelease this game as backwards compatibility because at least the game looks like it's up to date with other 8th generation games like MK8 and Crash Team Racing.

Personally i prefer the way the menus work in the original, but ive never even heard of Teams before the track-ranking videos. Plus, there were so many tracks in the original that i loved so much, not to mention the music.

One thing I didn’t like about Transformed- and even Team Sonic Racing- is that…they lost personality. In the first game, Shadow has his iconic bike, but he has a more…tank like car in Transformed. And another thing that loses personality are the all stars. They were a lot more tailored to the characters using them in the original compared to the other two. And of course, the announcer was best in the original. Also….the original had an amazing intro cutscene, and to me it actually aged kind of well. Though the lack of personality kind of hurts it still.
I have all of the games and I prefer the first one indeed over the other 2 but unlike you I prefer Transformed over TSR. I swear I used to spend a lot of time in the Time Attack mode in transformed and the original is just good I wish you included the bosses in the mission mode though for the original

Your items section was so bad. Instead of looking at what the items did you looked at if they made sense. While transforms items mostly dont have to do with sonic at least they tried to separate the items from mario kart unlike the first game. Man could have sworn the traffic cone was a banana or the green glove was a green shell but maybe im wrong. Gameplay is more important then sound or looks.

It's main strength is hindering the movement options of the opposition by taking up space while its weakness is it mediocrity as a projectile if you shoot it forward. It is balanced like all the items in Transformed. The only reason why I would give the original 2nd place over Transformed is that the All-Stars for the original are significantly better and more original than Transformed, where most of the characters just float and press one button to throw something at someone in Transformed.
Now as for round 4, I disagree with how you treated Team Sonic Racing. You spoke anecdotally and said that you cannot remember the track themes and that they are bad. That is not enough in my opinion. Team Sonic Racing uses a shit ton of remixes and unique leitmotifs in their songs that you don't give them credit for. For instance, the stage you were racing on not only uses a remix of Cool Edge from Sonic Unleashed, but has the melody of Reach for the Stars tucked away around the end before it loops. Furthermore, all the tracks are adaptive, having portions that play when you're on the final lap and a unique jingle for when the race finishes. The songs are practically a love letter to their origins that you did not acknowledge and bash on the sole merit of "I can't remember it". You didn't even mention anything about how all the characters have unique remixes of their main theme when they use their ultimate. I would actually put the original at the bottom since it doesn't do anything new with its music.
Tldr; I agree with your placement for round 3, but not with your rationale for the placement. And I disagree with your placement and rationale of Team Sonic Racing in round 4. I like the work you put into this though.

My 7 year old son prefers the original because it’s all land based. He struggles to control the planes in the Transformed version…I enjoy transformed but also love the original.
I plan to introduce the Nintendo giant Mario Kart to him a little further down the road, it’s inevitable, everyone has to play that game! But Segas racing games are great too, not sure if it’s as good as Mario Kart, but it’s not far behind at all.
I only tried team racing (ps4) and all stars racing (xbox360), I definitely agree that all stars racing is the best of the trilogy because the characters are unique, the cars are so creative like ulala on a "spaceship" and big on a tiny motorcycle. the tracks range on different categories (my faves were the casino/samba de amigo) and even with those categories the tracks are different from each other. I didn't play the different modes that frequently but I loved the grand prix and the different cups, I think that asr is the most complete one in the trilogy, maybe because I played it since I was a kid!
Finally! Someone else who agrees the original is better than Transformed. I played both for the first time recently, and the first game is now my favorite racing game of all time. Transformed on the other hand was a huge disappointment after the first game, and there's sooo many reasons I could go into about why I personally think it's inferior (though it's of course completely subjective). I think my main issue with Transformed is how long the tracks are, they're a complete slog. Some of them take up to 6 minutes, and they generally just feel tedious to play through, overstaying their welcome. For reference, the average Mario Kart track is 2-3 minutes long. ONE lap of Transformed is almost as long as an entire track in MK. Some people might like this, but for me they just drag on a little too long. Made it hard for me to get motivated and grind in the World Tour mode to unlock characters. I agree with every other point you make in this video too; the character roster, music, items, commentator, etc. are all far superior and give the game so much more charm and liveliness. I also generally just prefer how the original plays and controls, it's so much more fun for me to drift through the courses without them being interrupted and bogged down by mediocre water/flying sections. Transformed definitely has an edge over the original in some areas, but overall I was left extremely let down by it, and was really surprised to hear that a lot of people think it blows ASR1 out of the water. I know i’m going to get hate for stating my opinion but Transformed’s ost is my favourite and I really enjoyed the transformed gimmick surprisingly as the level design accompanied for this. I think if I tried SASASR on the PS3 my opinion would change as I only tried the DS version which was good for the DS but wasn’t as fun as how the console version looks. One day when I try the PS3 version of SASASR I will come back to this comment and see if my opinion has changed lol

Fun fact: The Garbage Puyo was suppossed to make an appearance instead of the Pufferfish item in S&ASRT, but SEGA hates it whenever anything Puyo Puyo leaves Japan so it was not meant to be.

I play all these 3 games a lot and at some point I even start to speedrunning ASR and ASRT.
The og ASR is my favorite for his mechanics, the vibes of all Sega chars that I love and how fast The game is. My main problem is that not all character can do all shorcuts for example at The start of Dark Arsenal at The left you have a ramp that Only less than half of the roster characters can do without a speedshoe.
I also love Transformed cuz how different is for other Karting games and I feel like The plain dosnt have the best controll but its not bad and you can go fast when your drifting and changing directions playing with both sticks is a bit tricky but is so weird and fun that I cant describe. My Only problem with Transformed is the roster and some old tracks like Sunshine Tour feels so slow but overall The game is great and The music is by far my favorite of the trilogy.
And lastly Team Sonic Racing... I hate this game. The Team mechanic is weird and stupid in my opinion, The tracks are really flat and dosnt give anything new. The Kart custommisation is fine and my biggest problem with this game os that its feel so slow when your not in that weird Team special boost or constantly having a ton of boost panels in your way.
FINALLY, someone who shares the same love for SaSASR! I played this game on the DS, Wii, and have it now on my Xbox 360 which probably says a lot about my love for it. I'll always be a B.D. Joe main though.

I Remember Playing The Original On My XBOX360 For Hours Because I Never Had A Nintendo To Play Mario Kart On. Eventually, My Little Brother Broke My XBOX Disk and I Was Stuck Playing A Demo Of Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed Which I Hate The Flight Controls. But Now That I Have The Nintendo Switch, I Am Happy (A Little Bit) To Play Team Sonic Racing And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
I recently bought the first Sonic SEGA Racing game yesterday just to relive my childhood days and not spend an eternity with its 2 sequels.
I really like how you analyzed all of these games; I think the first Sonic SEGA Racing is the superior than the next 2 sequels because everything about it such as the mechanics and characters are all balanced, compared to Transformed with questionable roster, its slow acceleration and hard as fuck vehicle swapping gimmick, and TSR with its disappointing roster.
The All-Stars in the OG game makes a total lot of sense and gives them originality as to what these SEGA characters can do in their respective universe/game than just the Sonic characters. Forcing them on a superpowered plane or a super boost is a big letdown, though I think the super boost in TSR is much better than Transformed.
My 360 copy for the OG Sonic SEGA Racing will be arriving this Saturday. They should definitely rerelease this game as backwards compatibility because at least the game looks like it's up to date with other 8th generation games like MK8 and Crash Team Racing.

Personally i prefer the way the menus work in the original, but ive never even heard of Teams before the track-ranking videos.
Plus, there were so many tracks in the original that i loved so much, not to mention the music.

One thing I didn’t like about Transformed- and even Team Sonic Racing- is that…they lost personality. In the first game, Shadow has his iconic bike, but he has a more…tank like car in Transformed. And another thing that loses personality are the all stars. They were a lot more tailored to the characters using them in the original compared to the other two. And of course, the announcer was best in the original. Also….the original had an amazing intro cutscene, and to me it actually aged kind of well. Though the lack of personality kind of hurts it still.
I have all of the games and I prefer the first one indeed over the other 2 but unlike you I prefer Transformed over TSR. I swear I used to spend a lot of time in the Time Attack mode in transformed and the original is just good I wish you included the bosses in the mission mode though for the original

Your items section was so bad. Instead of looking at what the items did you looked at if they made sense. While transforms items mostly dont have to do with sonic at least they tried to separate the items from mario kart unlike the first game. Man could have sworn the traffic cone was a banana or the green glove was a green shell but maybe im wrong. Gameplay is more important then sound or looks.
