    Dreamcast was a great console. I had to sell my N64 to afford one, which I kinda regret doing, but luckily the Dreamcast made up for the loss. Had lots of fun hours on there. Soul Calibur is undoubtedly the best game on the console and one I highly recommend.

      Oh no! I sold loads of games in order to afford newer stuff but fortunately I never sold a console (apart from the PSP actually, which I kinda regret...)
      Is Soul Calibur good for people who wouldn't typically be interested in fighting games? I'm really intrigued as to why people rate it so highly!

      @@PixelPursuit It's an easy game to play and it don't take long to master. The Dreamcast version doesn't just have an arcade mode to get stuck into, but a story mode which ate up the hours. Doing both unlocks a whole load of stuff.
      And I remember, after a hard day at school, I would do my homework while having the CPU fight itself in exhibition mode. And the back and forth was amazing.
      Awesome stuff

      @@PixelPursuitthere is definitely a lot of nostalgia when it comes to Soul Calibur.
      It's not a game like Grandia 2 or Marvel vs Capcom 2 where everyone considers it the peak of the series.
      Tons of people like 2, 3, or 4 more than the original 🤷

    Had a DC on the release loved it. The VMU have little mini games aswell. Soul caliber, ready2rumble power stone are good and crazy taxi good. Mine was crazy loud when the laser moves aswell, like there’s something in there screaming.

      I'm yet to play any of the minigames on the VMU, but I'll definitely get there eventually! A lot of people seem to really like Soul Caliber, a lot of lists put it at number 1, so I definitely need to look into that. Ready 2 Rumble wouldn't normally be my sort of thing but I've seen that mentioned a few times now too! Power Stone is one I hadn't even heard of until recently and it looks awesome!

    The DreamCast’s disc drive is loud yes, nothing you can do can change that- However! If your disc drive sounds like it’s buzzing when loading, I’d recommend looking up on re-lubricating the drive’s tracks and gears. It’s still gonna be loud, but it makes the games load better and the drive last longer.

    The Dreamcast really was a top notch console. Ahead of its time by a long way with some seriously great games! Try to get your hands on Metropolis Street Racer. Hi 🖐It's nice to see someone purchasing a Dreamcast in 2023. I am a long time lover of this console 😄
    Let me give you one precious advice: after inserting a game, be sure to keep one finger on the "open" button when you are closing the hood and then release the button once it's closed. This way, you will avoid the tiny but frequent "shock wave" effect (with time, it will damage the open/closed detection device that will cause your console to reboot while playing), so your Dreamcast will last longer. Also, avoid playing games burnt on CD-rom too often; they will make the Dreamcast lens get tired quickly, so you should prefer the real original games.
    😅I'm sorry that you have "Spirit of Speed 1937" as one of your first games. It's just awful... At least, you got "F1 World Grand Prix" for free.
    I understand you don't really like racing games (the opposite of me 😆), but I think you should get your hands on "Sega Extreme Sports" 👍 Well, now that I'm at it, I will just make you a quick list of DC games you really should buy if you have the chance:
    - Super Magnetic Neo (it's a platformer like Crash Bandicoot but with a magnet-based gameplay)
    - Outtrigger (an arcade FPS/TPS in arenas with fast paced action and really nice graphics)
    - Dynamite Cop (this arcade beat 'em all is not very pretty but it's so much fun !)
    - Skies of Arcadia (such a wonderful RPG, but now you gotta pay the price if you want to buy it)
    - Spawn: In the Demon's Hand (especially good for multiplayer)
    - Rez (experimental shooter with incredible music)
    - Tech Romancer (a versus fighting game with gigantic robots)
    I wish you good pleasure with your "new" console !

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před rokem +1

      Hello! That is some great advice right there, I've been making sure to do that since reading this comment! There seems to be a lot of little quirks with the Dreamcast like that! To be honest, I don't plan on playing burned games like that at all for the time being, I'm normally the sort of person who wants to get things officially unless there's no other option haha!
      Yeah, I didn't realise that Spirit of Speed was considered one of the worst games on the Dreamcast before playing it haha! Probably not the best first impression! I tend to like more arcade-like racers so if Sega Extreme Sports is like that, it might be more up my alley.
      Ooo, there's quite a few there that I've not heard of! Outtrigger, Spawn and Tech Romancer I'm pretty sure nobody's mentioned yet so I'll have a look at those for sure. A lot of people are saying to play Super Magnetic Neo, I think that one is going further and further up my priority list!

      If you can, get the Japanese version of REZ. Many European copies of the game have a glitch that crashes the game during the last boss battle, making it impossible to see the ending. My copy is one of those faulty ones, so I bought the PS2 and PS4 versions later on, but I still keep the Dreamcast version due to the Dreamcast mouse. House of The Dead 2 is a unlock once you beat House of the Dead 3 on Original Xbox. This is the Dreamcast version of 2 with all the same content added to that version. A few years later the Xbox Port of 3 was on Wii with the Dreamcast Version of 2 included but both are unlocked from the start. I believe the best video option for the Dreamcast is VGA. And, from what I've heard, the Toro VGA Box is the best one currently.
    The thing is a little complicated because not all Dreamcast games support VGA. But some of those unsupported games can be forced into VGA. And for the ones that can't, the Toro box also includes RGB SCART option.
    Adam Koralik's video explains the whole thing:
    [...can't include a link due to CZcams shenanigans. Oops.]

    The Dreamcast is an awesome console! My personal recommendation would be the port of Rayman 2 for the console, which is outstanding! If you’re also into extreme sports games like Tony Hawk, I’d also recommend Jet Set Radio, especially for its visual and audio presentation.
    I have no idea how the Kaico HDMI cable would operate, but if it taps into the VGA aspect to the console, you’re in luck! Dreamcast 480p is noticeably sharper than the other 6th Gen consoles outputting the same resolution.
    There may be compatibility issues for some games, as they will not load past the BIOS menu with a VGA device connected. However, that can be bypassed by plugging in the video cable as the game is being loaded. Nitro Rad did this in his review of Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness to get it up and running with VGA.

      Yeah, I think the Kaico HDMI adapter uses the VGA side of things, so I should be good to go with that!

    Glad to see you being able to play the best version of sonic adventure. All of the ports have progressively became worse and worse, and the 1999 Dreamcast version is definitely the most stable, with features the other versions removed like the dynamic lighting system.
    Thankfully there are ways to get the pc version into good shape via the sadx mod installer (more up to date than bettersadx, as that’s multiple years out of date) which fixes bugs and restores most of the Dreamcast content and look, but there’s always the few things that’ll never be replaced from the Dreamcast version such as chao adventure on the vmu.
    I’d say it’s also worth looking into the fan servers for the Dreamcast, as they bring back online functionality in a lot of the games that had them, like the dlc for sonic adventure 1&2, and phantasy star online as a whole.

    The Dreamcast is always worth owning, the issue is the prices of the games and the reliability of the disc's working because they are GD roms and cannot be buffed and scratches of any kind can prevent a game from working correctly. I love the Dreamcast and its my favorite system of all time with PS1 right behind it. I was lucky and boughtall my games during my 1st job and own most of the greatest games. I have 2 arcade sticks, 4 consoles, keyboard and mouse, microphone and 158 US titles in my collection. I absolutely love the arcade style and the DC was mostly arcade ports so they are amazing to play.
    A tip for a new collector would be to cautious of sellers and the games as I had bad luck in the day due to what I mentioned earlier. Most of the time if a game is buffed even if it works it could make the game unplayable and unreadable after cleaning. Some games could stop working over one little scratch or a disc covered in little scratches,it is so random and I even had to replace my cannon spike in the day over a minor scratch that prevented the region code to load and that game is not easy to find even back when I got it. But yeah enjoy this amazing system and if it's dated before a certain year you can play backups and imports with no problem.

    • @rcLdrcH
      @rcLdrcH Před rokem +1

      ...just because a game loads up does not mean it will work as a DC game can at any time send you right to the console menu with no warning. This happened to me when I got to disc 2 of resident evil code Veronica disc 2 during an event soon after loading my save.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před rokem

      That's another really good piece of advice, I probably would have taken a disc to be buffed if I had one that didn't work, so it's good to know that would be a waste of my time. Hopefully I don't run into any issues with any of my discs...
      The prices of the games luckily aren't astronomically high just yet. At least not for most of them that I've been looking at. Weirdly one of the most expensive ones is Sonic Adventure 2 which you would assume would be really cheap.
      Oh jeez! You have an insane Dreamcast collection! 158 games must be almost all of them surely!
      I'll definitely keep an eye out for if any of my discs are scratched at all. At least that gives me an excuse to make sure I'm thorough with playing them all haha!
      Oh no, that's the worst! I had a similar issue with a version of Metal Gear Solid 1 I owned, it was perfect until reaching a certain point on disc 2 and I couldn't get any further!

    I see you're interested in Retrotink 5x. It does seem like the ultimate upscaler currently.
    I'm rather curious about Retrotink 4k which should come out in a year or two. That will even allow to upscale 720p and 1080p to 4k.
    Ok, upscaling 1080p is not SUPER exciting because it's very easy to grab a native 1080p TV or monitor these days, true. But 720p, on the other hand...
    720p was not allowed to shine back in the day. Those old "HD Ready" TVs weren't 720p. They were 768p. So you weren't getting that sharp, 1:1 pixel scale. My Life in Gaming did a video on wall projectors some time ago and they showcased actual, native 720p devices. And, yeah, they looked notably sharper.
    Getting sharp 720p in 3x integer scale on a 4k TV could be quite nice. Especially for 2D games. Or even just games with 2D elements like Hard Corps: Uprising.

    There are 10 games released on Dreamcast that have never played better anywhere else, and if you have access to a GOOD VGA converter box, they can make the system VERY worthwhile.
    10 & 9) Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. Ported a lot of other places, but they've always done best on DC.
    8) Berserk. Is it a hard as nails game that features some weird decisions? Sure. Is it a far more faithful game to the manga than the Musuo style one on PS4? Also yes.
    7) Resident Evil: Code Veronica (and Dino Crisis, let's be honest). Native to the system, and used an actual arcade board to power the proceedings. Until it gets a remaster (and it MIGHT, come on), this is the best way to play it.
    6) Record of Lodoss War. It's so niche, even if you know the anime, you might not know the game. A tough recommendation, as the graphics will appear a bit muddied, though that might be the color palette they chose 🤔
    5) NFL 2K2. Is it incredibly dated compared to recent Madden Games? Are we even having this conversation 😂 For local multiplayer, it's ridiculously fun and a pretty technical football game. Using VMUs for playcalling is the best.
    4) Skies of Arcadia. Wayyyy too many random battles, but it's genuinely fun to play, the story is quirky, and the overall aesthetic is incredibly pleasing.
    3) Ready to Rumble. Again, this is a pushing and shoving on the couch multiplayer that can easily lead into impromptu tournaments with friends on random Thursday nights.
    2) Power Stone.
    WAS NEVER BETTER ELSEWHERE. EVER. The ultimate couch multiplayer 3D fighter. Think Smash with a bit less cheesing, and you've got Power Stone. Great character designs too.
    1) Grandia 2. How literally every port of this game still insists on using the absolutely horrendous PS2 version, I will never understand. It's such a marvel (and it did so much to move anime style RPGs forward), the Korean made KRPG (is that a thing??) Magna Carta 2 on the 360 basically rips off ALL of the character designs, most of the story beats, and even some of the locations. The gameplay is vastly different between them, so there is that.
    Which is why Grandia 2 on Dreamcast is SO good. Visible enemies, and combat that's so tactical and FUN you'll find yourself grinding just to spend more time playing it.
    That, and the magic system (you equip a magic egg that levels up with you that you can then move around to other characters) is pretty open ended.
    The number of builds you can do are frankly ridiculous, and if the game ever did get a remake, a new game plus would add HUNDREDS of hours to what is already an immensely playable experience.

    • @nolankuffner3573
      @nolankuffner3573 Před rokem +1

      To flesh out one's gaming experience, I'd recommend: Blue Stinger for RE fans, Sega GT for Gran Turismo fans, Metropolis Street Racer for Forza fans, Marvel vs Capcom for fighting game fans, EGG for fans of games like Pokemon / Digimon (it's not the best, but it's still pretty good), Jet Set Radio for art / skate / music fans (the soundtrack is one of the best on the system), Crazy Taxi for.. basically anyone, and Psychic Force 2012 is a pretty rad game that plays like nothing else.
      I'd recommend Soul Calibur, but I don't think it's indicative of the best the series has to offer, to be honest.
      Still a fun game IF you're using the Dreamcast, but 2 and 3 were pretty big steps forward 🤷

      I actually already have Sonic Adventure 1 and Sword of the Berserk! In fact Sword of the Berserk is one of the games that got me interested in getting a Dreamcast in the first place. I recently read through all of the manga and I got pretty invested haha!
      I really, really want to play Code Veronica, I've actually never played any version of it so I want to grab myself the Dreamcast version and finally go through it.
      I'm also extremely interested in Skies of Arcadia, Power Stone and Grandia 2! I'm not normally a big RPG guy but if it's something special I might end up liking it!
      I'm pretty sure nobody has recommended Record of Lodoss War before, I've never even heard of the anime either! I'll have to have a look what the game's like!
      I don't think EGG has been mentioned yet either, that's another one I need to have a look at now!
      I'm still missing loads of the classic Dreamcast games like MSR, Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi, so when I've grabbed those I'll start diving into the more obscure stuff for sure!

    It may be worth going back to the PC version of Sonic Adventure at some point because during the Dreamcast's life cycle there were numerous online events that changed up a few things in the game world, and these can be replicated through mods. You can also apply the older DC textures to keep everything looking consistent. I hope more folk preserve things like this because it's so cool to be able to experience a facsimile of a one-time special event like the console's launch.

    • @PixelPursuit
      @PixelPursuit  Před rokem

      On paper that would make the most sense! But the reason I didn't do that is because me and my girlfriend play some PlayStation games in co-op, so in order to do that we'll need the PS4. Plus, the PS4 is basically my dedicated PSVR console now. Obviously the PS5 is compatible with the original PSVR but I would rather all of those wire be attached to the PS4!
      Originally I couldn't record from the PS5 because loads of my equipment wasn't compatible with 4K, but I quite quickly upgraded everything to fix that!

    The Dreamcast analogue stick utilised Hall effect magnetic sensors which means they should be more durable than most sticks used in modern controllers. The Dreamcast triggers also used magnets. Fancy.
    Interestingly, some 3rd party manufactures are going back to magnetic sensors for analogue sticks. E.g. GuliKit with their King Kong 2 Pro controller.
    I assume it's because of how infamously mediocre the Switch Joycons are when it comes to wear & tear.
    I do hope we'll get more high-quality controller sticks in the future. Flippin' X360 stick drift was the reason I learned soldering. Just so I could replace them. :P

      The Dreamcast is actually 60fps regardless of if the games are PAL or NTSC (probably aside from certain specific examples). It was the first console to put an emphasis on keeping the gameplay consistent across regions as far as I'm aware.
      I think it's also quite easy to get around the region lock on the Dreamcast, all you need is a certain disc that circumvents the region check (again at least I think that's the case based on my limited knowledge!)
