The Backup Start Passcode at 4:18 is a great feature. You use the button on the door to unlock the doors, and then press your foot on the brake and try and start the truck and it'll request the passcode. So you don't even need your phone.
I also own a Lightning for two weeks now and love it! I do wish they came with key cards instead of key fobs they feel too bulk in the pocket and the convenience of have the key card in the wallet was much better as previous Tesla owner as well.
Tom, Ford is not Tesla by any means in the software area. 😉. Great video that will help other Lighting owners. Glad to see the OTA updates by other OEMS at last.
NOTE: I have the Mustang Mach-E and in at least three occasions a firmware update comes out that breaks phone as a key. The ONLY to fix and re-add is to do the following: Click the vehicle icon on the top left --> Settings --> Scroll left menu down to General --> Reset --> FordPass Connect Reset --> Phone as a Key Reset. That is the only way it properly deletes any corrupted Phone as a Key settings EVEN IF YOU REMOVE THE PHONE AS A KEY in the settings. ANOTHER ONE: This has happened only once but if you turn your can on and the main screen does not turn on, on the right button section on the steering wheel hold volume DOWN AND the right icon (next song button) for 10 seconds. It will restart the screen. Turning the car off and opening the door and closing and turning the car on again does not fix this issue. You gotta do the two button thing.
Great video, Tom. We got our trucks within a week of each other… exact same color and spec. My PAAK Power Up update came a couple of weeks ago but my app doesn’t show the option to setup. I even tried deleting and reinstalling thinking the app didn’t “automatically” update. Nothing worked. The only difference is I’m on iPhone, not Android. I’m wondering if that’s the reason. Ford basically told me to just be patient… which isn’t particularly easy for me 😊
Ford may be behind Tesla, but it’s encouraging they take all these advancements seriously and are advancing quicker than expected as a legacy mfr. I still think the key card as a fail safe is a good idea, although I’ve had a key card go bad too. I know Ford has key pad entry, at least I think it still does, but that won’t start the vehicle I assume.
Unfortunately you skipped a few steps. What screen did you start on and how did you get there I can't find that and your video didn't tell me how to do it
Seems like you are on the later releases for the software updates. I got my PAAK update on October 28th, a full month before you. I wish Ford didn't phase in the software update but rolled them out to all at once.
Hey Tom, Any plans to do a video about the Lightning's range loss during the winter? I just got an email that my ER Lariat Lightning is scheduled to be built in January 2023. Excited to take delivery hopefully in February and expect it to be pretty cold here in New Jersey then. Not too concerned since I have the ER though. Just curious what your thoughts and data are on the topic. Keep up the great content!
It really bugged me that you didn't open up the Locks item from the drop down menu that you scrolled past a hundred times. Could it have been in there? That's where I would expect to find it.
Im pretty sure that was an android issue (sadly everyone supports iphones first these days and us android users are relegated to second thought). On another note, im curious how it has held up over the last year and/or if its gotten better, im seriously considering a ford pro this year with the incentive being availble on the hood and the availability increasing. After seeing the cybertruck offering finally it seems like ford fits all my needs, i just hate all the buttons 😂 . But phone as a key is something that is an absolute must in my next car I've found.
Tom, lightning is a fabulous vehicle, but as a previous Tesla owner you must be frustrated that Ford software doesn’t have walk-away locking. When reaching a destination, Ford requires driver to press a Stop button and a fob button for locking. I dislike going backwards.
thank you very much for your videos. I think I watched and liked every one of them. I got my platinum this week. I updated the truck software and ford pass. I still do not see "set up phone as a key" another question please: how you can tell the amount of KWH used to date and per session. thank you again
The Lightning doesn't give you good information on kWh used, unfortunately. You can look in the FordPass app to see how many kWh you added in each charging session, though.
I know it's not on this topic, but anyone found a way to shut off the voice prompts on these? I drive 5 mph stop and go a lot on unpaved roads opening and closing cattle gates and the seat beat reminder voice wont stop. I got rid of the dinger by following the manual, but the voice prompts remains.
Maybe they could put a button inside the door, like maybe near the window buttons that can lock the doors as you get out of the vehicle. Personally I find that the walkaway/approach lock unlock can be annoying on my Tesla, since I use a module that pops my door open when I approach. The only reason it is good on Teslas is because they didn't put any kind of sensors on the door handles for the locks and they don't really have a lock button aside from the thing on the screen, which Ford has. For that reason the walkaway locking is rather pointless. It's just something that people can say that Fords don't do that Teslas do. Guess what... it's not a Tesla.
I agree, walk away locking isn't that much of a feature. The Lighting has a button on all 4 door handles that you can press and it'll lock the doors (if you have a keyfob or PaaK with you). Or you can press the bottom 2 buttons on the keypad (7-8 & 9-0 at the same time).
Hi Tom! one quick question which no one else seems to be able to answer. Will this feature now allow owners to actually drive off without the FOB key? I believe the app FordPass did not support this feature natively and you will need the FOB to put the car in drive. Can you please clarify if this feature is available in 2024? Can you use Phone-as-a-key feature to drive off with the car? Many thanks.
Hi Tom I have a ford lightning in NJ as well for about 2 weeks now. I miss a few other things from my teslas…Other than the walk away lock where is the charge % when driving the lightning? Where can I see what amp the truck is charging at? The only thing I see is the estimate time to complete the charge. It’s nice in the Tesla to see that information. Hopefully ford will add those items in a future update as well.
You can see the SOC% if you set the driver's display to the "calm" screen. It also appeared when you are using BlueCruise. It's also available on the charge screen on the center display. Currently, you cannot see the charging information like the current kW draw as you get in Teslas. Hopefully, Ford will add that information in an OTA update in the future, it should be there.
@Eric Roe Not specifically, but ill keep pestering Foed for it. There's an update coming soon that is supposed to offer more charge settings, so let's see.
Yeah, the Lightning built after the 3rd week of July had it from the go. But the early builds like mine didn't. They are still working on the walk-away locking.
Tom, as a current Lightning owner (October) and a future R1S owner, I am really looking forward to your thoughts as an owner of a Lightning and R1T. When can we expect your video on your like/dislikes for each? Would also sure appreciate what you foresee as the future software updates for the Lightning. It’s missing a ton of things as you mentioned in several of your earlier videos and your interview with Ford executives. Great stuff as always!
Never had a vehicle with that feature. Would seem to be really handy. Now if your wife was waiting in the Lightning after you left and it locked; how does she authorize an exit for a no alarm event❓
Works like a charm, and then you can use the backup passcode to start the vehicle, and that is a fully keyboard so you can have a real password, not just digits.
I did that for a while on my Model Y. You can also set your phone as a key card. So you have WiFi unlock, Bluetooth unlock and RFID key card unlock all from your phone. Still, another physical RFID Tesla key card would work in case you lost your phone.
Hmmmmmmmmmm????????? I have a 2022 F-150 ICE Unit with ALL the whistles and Bell's, However, I do Not have the Phone as a Key Feature on my Phone / Truck at this point Either, And have Not received an OTA Update to Proceed as you Did???? Ford is the only manufacturer pushing real OTA updates besides tesla. It’s a nice surprise when the features open up.
Rivian has been doing a lot of OTA updates.

Without a backup RFID card this feature isn’t that convenient. Kind of misses the point.
@@cadriver2570 But the vehicle has the entry key pad.
@@honesty_-no9he Great point, I forgot about that.
Tom, Ford is not Tesla by any means in the software area. 😉. Great video that will help other Lighting owners. Glad to see the OTA updates by other OEMS at last.
I received my Lightning in October and PAAK has worked well since day 1. I think the early models didn’t have PAAK until recently.
Exactly. The early builds, from April through the 3rd week of July didn't have it installed at the factory but the trucks made after that did.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney same . Lightning since September, had it day one. Knew the build date by heart, have already forgotten lol.

Apparently only available for Lariat and Platinum.

Can you choose to unlock the truck with your phone manually via the app? I am asking, so that no one could steal my phone and my truck.
What's under the Locks menu drop-down?
Who else remembers that it took domestic automakers decades to go from 2 keys to 1?
had no idea that wasnt a thing on fords. glad to see them push needed qol updates. crazy to think they are closest to tesla.....
