Dude thanks for this. I had the same problem a few years ago with my 2005 sprinter 2500. I went to every mechanic and no one could figure it out. I checked the electrical lines myself and saw a rubber spacer and wondered if it was out of place. I moved it and Never had a problem again. Thank you, I wish more people posted their repairs and tips.
Towing services suck. ‘trucks’ that AAA won’t tow (it weighs less than my f150) or ‘it’s a Mercedes and we need special parts/tools/equipment’.
Hmm? State Farm will tow mine as a normal vehicle. There's also issues down where it Y's that can affect the camshaft position sensor

Hello, so darn lucky I found this, I'm thinking on a 2006/2007 23J rv with the Merc.Diesel, Can you tell. me any more on what to look attar expect in service. Just had this happen to my Sprinter RV. Mercedes told me to call the insurance company, as the replacement for the harness is $4K. The insurance company said this is a design flaw and normally warranty work, so they will not cover the repair. Mercedes says I am beyond the warranty period. About to call Mercedes of North America to ask for a warranty extension.
For a temp fix move the harness to advised location. I had to be on the road, bought mine used, no warranty. Maybe a phone guy could splice your harness bypassing the trouble area.

I have an 07 as well and I've already replaced glow plug #6 and repaired the plastic turbo expansion unit. I now have to replace glow plug #3 and this Sprinter has less than 18,000 miles on it. I am not as impressed with MB's as I use to be.
This is a great catch, thanks for pointing this out. I'm going to check these harness point when I change the glow plug. Did you leave that plastic tray that goes under the air filter for a reason?

My 2010 almost done that too... I cought it before went to the bare wire.. unfortunately engine sized up with all normal oil level no overheating...crazy vehicle

I actually have 2 sprinters one 2005 5 cylinder 2.7 camper I bought it with blown engine conecting rod went to outside world, form one owner Mercedes serviced normal oil level as well. 2010 is blue tech ...grim tech more advanced then 05 so merceds decided not to install oil pressure light or gauge in commercial vehicles so I didnt have chance to save engine . I was Honda tech and I saved quite few engines from potential total engine failure oil pump failure is not uncommon thing..but Mercedes is apparently champion with stupid things .I Understand passenger vehicles might not need to have oil pressure light so if blows up oh well you can get car rental or use bus to get to work ...but commercial vehicles are bread for some people like me .Awfull idea not to equip with full instrumentation.Mercedes sprinter body rust is a bonus too..370 k km hwy life easy driving when sized up.I end up buying 2014 ram promaster 3500 3.6v6 gas 340k km no any major issues just simple maintenance .Mercedes RIP since early 2000's

There's a few things such as moving the wiring harness as mentioned in this video, the calipers in front can develop sticking problems due to rust(I cleaned mine up problem solved), and the EGR valve seems problematic many people will clean them or just replace it.the transmission doesn't have a dipstick so buying one and checking levels is important. Low or ditty trans fluid can cause it to surge (engine) not really noticable but if your driving and watch he tachometer it can be seen. There's a vibration that always seems to be present between 50 and 60 mph but has never presented a problem, mine has over 330,000 miles and drives great. The turbo can go which will make passing an issue but not driving fast. Some mechanics recommend rebuilding them. Ive had mine for 7 years and have never bought a part except for the usual disposable parts like brakes, belts, filters, oil etc. Oil capacity is 3 gallons and requires a low smoke oil. It has a crazy cleaning system for the exhaust where every once in a while will do a self cleaning and glow red (the exhaust) while driving down the road to burn out the particulate filter. This issue may have been altered when the DEF fluid came out. I plan on adding propane to mine to help keep things clean. That's about it. If mine ever dies I'll probably get another one. It doesn't look like it will anytime soon. Cheers
These sprinters have timing chains by the way. I haven't heard of anyone changing one but the cost are around 750 for tensioner, chain and labor combined. If the fuel pump goes out I'd replace the chain at the same time. That's just me I'm a little on the wild side. I do use motorkote in my engines though. My average mpg is 19.6 I can reach 25 driving slow or 22mpg at 60mph 18mpg at 70 mph

@@jlai3861 yes and the first time I realized it was working was when it was glowing red. It scared me until I found out that this happens from time to time, probably while driving on the highway without people even realizing it.
@@eby6114 thank you for replying, so have DPF gave you any trouble? There is a very low mileage 2007 sprinter ( under 60k km) available but owner unsure about DPF and I heard horrible stories about DPF and especially DEF.

2008 sprinter 3.0 diesel mine had this same issue the point where harness sits next to turbo started to expose wires. Found it by accident wish I would of seen this video before.

Did you check the power windows or wipers at same time it dies. This was what happen to me. Dealer would not find problem . Later i found bad motor ground. Ground motor to the battery ground.
Tony Martin nice find. Hadn't checked that but I even have friends with dodge vehicles...main wiring harness relay on several of them too. I had to relocate mine or it'd just die until I played with the harness.

Universal Sprinter problem with ground wire. 2006 / 2.7 SAME PROBLEM If your driving down the road and lose engine power check your power window of wipers if no power. And you get pulled over place hand on ground post of battery if hot as HELL . This is a bad motor grounding wire. (motor to frame) It took may month to find this problem. TAG Truck Center never could. Van would have to set 1-2 hours then it start. I turning the key to start only one click start never engaged. Adding a ground wire to battery fix this problem. $14.00 . If you have this problem and you have a jumper cable you can restart by making the ground post to engine . Ground the starter so it will turn the motor. I stop started other DOA Sprinter on the road like this. jumping battery to battery will not work if 2 vehicle's the main jumper from there battery to doa VAN pos (+) post OTHER to neg (-) on the motor casing.
Nice find. I've never had this issue before just the wiring harness issue which would allow for easy restarting. After relocation of harness I've never had an issue again. I have a lot of miles though and might add a ground as insurance. The major problem I've found is with the main power line itself on the positive side. Will make a video of it soon

I took it to 300,000 mi and then it started having starting issues. did a few tests and it looks like either the fuel pump went out or the fuel injectors both are quite expensive almost 1/4 of the value of the truck when I bought it originally so I decided to let it go.
Also known for cracked turbo inlet I think it was.

Great job greta video this issue will make any engine not work good gasoline or diesel how in the world they can sale this vans whit this ? they add all cains of electrical sensors and electronics and they don't protected from heat ? really how dumb is that Dodge I have a friend that buy a Dodge pick up new from a dealer drive 10 miles and brake down they tow it back to the dealer for 3 weeks they give it back 2 weeks lather again same issue this happen like 5 times finally mi friend wen and talk to them and said well gime another vehicle they said no sorry we can do that he tell them you sale me a limon here come the answer from the Doge dealer no we dont sale limons you buy a limon 3 months lawsuit dealer lost return money back + 35k on top mi friend got a toyota for free yea buy a DODGE very responsable co

Find the wiring harness. Move it out of harm's way. Splice it it you have to
Sometimes the ground to the engine has too much resistance and the longer the engine is running, the ground gets hotter, which causes even more resistance. You can just run a single jumper cable from the negative battery terminal, to a convenient place on the engine block, and it may solve your problems. It won't hurt if it doesn't. It's a known problem in Sprinter vans in 2003 as well as some other years.

This is a common problem. Most of the time the actuator need replacing or cleaned. The bell crank is good to clean and lubricate as well and clean your associated electrical connections with a corrosion cleaner.
I had that issue. My problem was an oil leak from oil return line between the turbo and engine. All i needed was a $10 rubber seal on that line connecting to the engine and it solved my problem.

I have 651 Engine for sprinter 2013 and It just lost compression and we open it and find piston 2 ring broken and I put 4 new piston but now it starts nice but I drive for maybe 500m and it just cut off and the earth wires from battery and body are hot what is the problem
Probably the inline fuse is corroded, you loose voltage and the alternator tries to overcome it. Video in 1 hour
If your referring to the ground you can run a direct ground from motor to frame, also check to quick disconnect next to the gas pedal, that a major grounding wire but has a loose fit

Definitely I had a friend that had a Dodge ram truck diesel. They couldn't keep it running.I told him to check the wire harness and that's what it was. I don't know what the repair bill was but they ended up replacing the whole wiring harness
