Thanks for the video, just did Valve cover gaskets, plugs, coils, wires and intake gasket and this helped a lot. Little over 2 hours to do it all and not a bad job. After shop quoted $450 to just do plugs and wires I decided to do it myself, found the valve cover leak while I was in there and decided to replace the coils while I was in there. Car had 196k on it Thanks again
+streetknight2 Cool, I'm glad it helped out. I need to do a timing belt and cam seals soon, and I will probably make a video of that one as well. This is one of my top videos, there must be a lot of these cars out there. Mine just ticked over 171k and it drives like new.
The three gaskets are two exhaust valve cover gaskets and 1 intake valve cover gasket. The two valve cover gaskets are reverse versions of each other. Apparently there is a version of this motor that has the exhaust on the other side, and that is why it comes with two in case you have that version.
+Sean Riley Thanks. If you are leaking, it might be the cam seals though, so if you need to do a timing belt just do that and the cam seals and all at once. This job was pretty quick though and a lot cheaper to try first I guess.
Thanks for sharing! Great you showed where to put the the sealant on the half moons and the tip with the coffee filters. My Felpro kit came with two intake valve cover gaskets, six oil baffle gaskets for some reason.. The spark plug cover on my GE doesn't seem to fit any of the provided gaskets from the kit.
really appreciate the video. was looking for this as my valve gasket is leaking. But man, this is a lot of work and I just don't feel comfortable going to deep yet. I just picked up the car and would like to enjoy it before I start possibly doing what you did. I will take it to the shop and gain more confidence.
HALFAMAZINGTV Honestly, this job is not that bad. If you have a basic ratchet set you should be good to go. It really can't go that wrong, except for an oil leak if you pinch the gasket like I did, but that is obvious. I'm not a seasoned mechanic, but a lot of stuff on cars is not that hard if you just dive in.
Thanks I got minds gone two weeks ago, no more leaks from the valve cover. Now I need to change the O-ring in the cam, which is leaking oil. Can complain too much because my is300 is a14 years car but still run strong and parts wears down over time.
looking to do mine friday, gunna check my timing belt while im in there. i wanna do alternator, waterpump, timing belt, cam seals, valve cover gaskets, coil packs, plugs and wires all in one job. gunna make a full day of it, 2 if i need to. Just bought my is300 with 125k and it has an oil leak that i havent tracked yet but im sure it a gasket or seal, figured id do it all at once.
what about the three 14mm plugs in the valley? I just did one of these valve cover reseals where the vc gasket was fine but oil was leaking thru the three plugs.
Helpful video. I just got a 2000 Lexus GS300 with 2JZ-GE engine. Looks like this will be a needed task for me to complete. Besides spark plugs what else would you recommend taking care of?
There is some around The ridges of the valve covers but that maybe from the oil cap off. And do I have to take the valve covers off to get the cam shaft seal clamps off ?
Thank you for your videos, Speedkar99! My sister gave my niece this 2003 Lexus IS300..she got used from inheritance money. Few yrs ago.... after I helped her with three things on it, someone else left off oil cap... "Get that cap !"... I am only DIY, as needed.. Next : fr.clip rt. qtr fender bender. Shop mechanic complain about oil in crevasses having to clean some.. Come to now, the niece wants to keep it ... She has not lot money...Bam! Brkework, Bam ! Front suspension left and right. Bam! Water pump leak, engine overheating....1200$ repair quote "take engine out"....? $800quote(another's), my friend tells her($700).... I dig in to nuts and bolts... Oil deposit at basin of vvt-i gear has to mean camshaft seal, doesn't it ?so the suggestions are when you order parts in rock auto mechanic video says do all the oil seals... I don't want to fail....
You most definitely need Black or even red ( not the Best) RTV in the corners and anywhere the cast changes from a little high to low also on the top of the Cam hubs!
Nope. I've never done it on this car. I imagine once you get to them, you just pull them out and swap them. I did just do the VVT-I pulley and cam seals, that was not super fun, but my leaks are all gone now. Good luck!
Well your video helped but I still have a leak. I'm wondering was your timing belt inspection cover wet before/after replacing the valve cover gaskets. I knew for a fact that the covers were leaking and thought that the oil I was seeing in that front cover area was from it leaking forward. I replaced both intake and exhaust cover gaskets and that front cover is still getting wet.. I did notice that the left side of the gasket on exhaust side cover did not fit as nicely into the curvature of the cover/cam area did like the right side of that exhaust cover. I really had no choice not to use it because the old gasket was destroyed when taking it out. I figured it was probably fine. I did use the permatex in the corners like you did. There was some on the engine from the factory like you mentioned. Just wondering now if the gasket is the culprit or if the cam seals could be the source of the leak.
+Rob T I have a bit of a leak now too, and you can see it seeping a bit under the cam gear cover in the front. From my research I'm 90% sure it is the cam seals. Unfortunately that means doing a timing belt while you are in there (cam seals are actually harder). Short of cracking the crank pulley bolt loose it looks like a breeze though. Parts are cheap too. I plan to do mine some day soon, and I probably will make a video. If you get to it first, let me know if it fixes your problem. Thanks.
+SquishyBrained Well it's getting pretty cold here in MA so I don't know if I'm going to be motivated to do anything else until April/May lol. I'm not due for a Tbelt change for another 20K so I'm reluctant to get into that now just to change the seals. It is a bummer that it still leaks.. I was looking forward to parking in the driveway again. Oh well. You're right though if your going in to do those seals you might as well do it all. Thank you again for the video and your response it was certainly helpful. Good luck!
Robert Zarate it's just a cheapo glass florescent fixture from the hardware store. I just chained it up there with light chain. led ones are pretty cheap now.
Thanks alot! I will check them out!. On mine I can start see some oil wetness around the gaskets. I see that have to mess around and taking off alot electronics lol How much would you say an average lexus/toyota dealer would charge?
Robert Zarate depends. the gasket isn't always the problem. could be cam seals. to do those and the timing belt, I was quoted about 2200 I think from a local shop... not a dealer. too much, but it's not a fun job. I'd say $50/hr minimum.
Luckily from what I see, I think it may just be what you just replaced it looks like and I do know it does need the spark plugs. I got the car last year in april with 124k and has now about 138k for an 01.. Running like a champ and so smooth. Just had to replace the front brakes and front pass upper control arm.
I did not seem to have any trouble, it was not full of coolant really, just a tiny little bit came out. It might be worth running the bleed cycle though just to be sure it is free from air in the system.
is this same process as is300. i used to do the hard way by taking half of the throttle body at a time. god damn that was a pain in the ass and not to mention the fucking coils so brittle then i put the coils and plugs wires back out of order bc i took all of them out at a time. causing the car to unable to rev all the way. this video helps alot
thanks. for the non turbos I believe it is the same for es, gs, and is300s. turbo is similar bit the intake it a lot different. mine leaks from cam seals now. doing a video on that when I get time.
I've not done one, but I think they are very similar. I'm told even the 2JZ-GTE is close for this, just some of the stuff is different, but none of this is all that hard really... says me who did it twice though.
Wrong information here, you do not need to change the manifold gaskets as they are metal, silicone sealant does not need to be used. , the reason there was a oil leak was because it was not fitted properly, lay the gaskets in the rock covers property and it will be right 👍
yes lexus charge 4 to 600 dollars just for a tune up I hate the way the car industry makes there motors now every since they did the side ways engine it is made that way only so you can bring it back to the dealers $$$$ for them that's way they made all the places like spark plugs water pump ignition switch ect. hard to get to so they can keep making that money
Thanks for the video, just did Valve cover gaskets, plugs, coils, wires and intake gasket and this helped a lot. Little over 2 hours to do it all and not a bad job. Difference between 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE?
There are three gaskets two are intake, they’re for Vvti and non vvti.
great informative video! thanks for taking the time to do these on the is300!
Great job. Made me want to go and do mine now. I really just watched to see how accessible the headers are.
+Sean Riley Thanks. If you are leaking, it might be the cam seals though, so if you need to do a timing belt just do that and the cam seals and all at once. This job was pretty quick though and a lot cheaper to try first I guess.

Good job man like the information you gave here.
good advice... next week I'm replacing the valve cover gasket on my brothers 2000 Lexus GS300.
Thanks, glad it helped out. The job is pretty easy, just a few bolts (nuts) are hard to get to.
really appreciate the video. was looking for this as my valve gasket is leaking. But man, this is a lot of work and I just don't feel comfortable going to deep yet. Great Job! Thanks man!
Thank I did it took me about two hour your video was a lot of help
Right on. If it still leaks it's cam seals. I'll be doing mine soon enough and plan to do a video.

You can also apply the sealant to the covers, instead of to the motor.
thanks for sharing the video.
I want to do this on my 2006 Lexus GS300 LE. The engine bay looks daunting for that kinda task😳
Should be easy though. Did the alternator my self 😊
GS300 LE ? - there is no such vehicle, and all 3rd gen GS's are V engine, not inline. You've better not.
I'm prepping to do mine tomorrow
Cool, good luck. it's a breeze. watch those coil connectors. they get brittle.
what about the three 14mm plugs in the valley? I just did one of these valve cover reseals where the vc gasket was fine but oil was leaking thru the three plugs.
SquishyBrained, where did you find this kit? Looking to do it myself in the next week. Thanks for helpful vids.
Helpful video. I just got a 2000 Lexus GS300 with 2JZ-GE engine. Looks like this will be a needed task for me to complete.
Besides spark plugs what else would you recommend taking care of?
i'm looking to replace a fuel filter and pump on a 93 lexus gs300
There is some around The ridges of the valve covers but that maybe from the oil cap off. And do I have to take the valve covers off to get the cam shaft seal clamps off ?

+herculesx Thanks.
Do you have a parts list?
Great video! Thank you! Now can you help with the PO325 knock sensor code that registered right after the gasket was replaced?
probably a connector left loose if it happened right after....
Great video. I have the exact year and model Lexus. Do you happen to have a video on replacing the fuel injectors?
Nope. I've never done it on this car. I imagine once you get to them, you just pull them out and swap them.
I did just do the VVT-I pulley and cam seals, that was not super fun, but my leaks are all gone now. Good luck!
How is he running?
I understand this might be a stupid question but do you have to put the plastic covers back on cause I like to see my motor
+Tbone Scriv the big top plastic? You don't need it. Keep it in case you sell the car.

Question for you, Where did you get that LED bar... btw ? That could def come in handy forsure
Thanks for sharing also.

Do you have color guide for the coils plug mine broke and I'm confused
Oscar Gil sorry, I don't. I'm sure it's out there somewhere. coils usually don't have polarity, but I'm not sure.
Torque specs?
Did you need to do anything with that coolant line? No air in the system or anything?
I did not seem to have any trouble, it was not full of coolant really, just a tiny little bit came out. It might be worth running the bleed cycle though just to be sure it is free from air in the system.

Mathew Upton Thanks, that is correct... I think the ES is the avalon but I won't look it up. V6 transverse, not 2jz
Thanks for the Video.
But Can you include the year model in the title. ?
Thanks
2002. All GS300s with a 2JZ-GE would be the same though
What hood work light is that? Seems to illuminate very well!
hah, it is a $20 4ft florescent fixture from home depot. a good bright magnetic one would be awesome but I've never seen one retail.
Nice! Harbor freight has one that you describe but battery life is its major downfall
+NewYorican_ yea, mine was going up in the garage soom so I just chained it up real quick since I had it. it was plugged in.
I'm going to do this today I let you guys know how it go.
+Troy McKnight Good luck! It is not that bad of a job. Just be careful with those coil connectors.
Is there only 3 spark plug wires on my 2002 gs300 ?
eric rios yep. the coils sit atop 3 of the plugs (3 coils). wires go to the others.
In the video it looks like there are 6 total spark plug wires (the red wires). Are there 6 spark plug wires or 3?
Bob S 6 plugs, the 3 coils each sit on top of a plug, so only the other 3 have actual wires. wasted spark setup, so each coil runs 2 plugs.
Great, thanks!
whats the torque specs again?
I think medium.
I have non vvti, so will the process be the same?
I've not done one, but I think they are very similar. I'm told even the 2JZ-GTE is close for this, just some of the stuff is different, but none of this is all that hard really... says me who did it twice though.
SquishyBrained
have you done the head gasket b4?
Dante Gazaway nope, not on a 2jz.
whats the mileage on your car?
keith v 170k or so at this time, 189k now
It just removing these valve covers because of everything you gotta remove just to get to them😭
but the laugh is on them cause we learn fast these days..
Вытер крышку.... Обоссаться))). Помой уже целиком со всех сторон .. а так и средство и микрофибру только перевел

You didn't use a torque wrench did you? lol
Do you need to?
I'd just tighten it down hard a possible lol

Good video but I think I will take mine to the shop. Too much work.
Get a quote and decide then :P
It is really not that much work, I think it took me 2 hours counting shooting the video.
