- WHY THERE IS OIL IN SPARK PLUG WELL, ENGINE MISFIRE FIX
If you have oil in spark plug well / oil in spark plugs well in this video we will explain what can cause you to have oil in the spark plugs and how that can lead to engine misfire. It is very common to see oil in spark plugs on an older car or a car with higher miles. This is due to the fact that gaskets tend to age and often the oil in the spark plugs is cause by failing valve cover gasket. We demonstrated how the spark plug well was full of oil on this car and this was causing engine misfire and you can get multiple misfire codes any thing from P0300 to P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 on a 4 cylinder engine. We were able to fix the oil in spark plug well and the engine misfire by putting new valve cover gasket.

Does the spark plug with oil have to be changed or just cleaned off? That wasn’t mentioned.
I saw a clever BMW tech on a video take a sprayer out of a bottle like Windex and put the sprayer suction tube tip into the spark plug hole and he squeezed the trigger repeatedly until he drained all the oil out into a rag. Because the tip of the suction tube is small enough to go around the spark plug and take out all the oil there’s less oil at the bottom of the hole when you finally remove the spark plug. I hope this helps you guys.
Legend I have been looking for ways to do this I need to replace my gasket on a ford transit and all 4 glow plugs are full of oil
I actually did that before it worked great 👍
Domanic Gilbert just get a spray bottle from the dollar store, all you’re gonna need is the sprayer part, even though you could use the bottle itself as the collection container or even a disposable cup,for the removed fluid.
Wow you guys are smart I would’ve never thought of this, unfortunately I used the same sprayer of windex trying to reach in the spark plug holes and I had no luck. Do you guys know of any spray bottles that have a long tube? Thank you
What I did is attach a vaccum line to a vaccum hose tape it off and the tube can reach all the way down and suck out all the oil w my shop vac
Great! Just missing the part of the video where you show us how to take the engine out so we can do this!
It sounds good but if you not a mechanic dont even try it
DON'T NEED TO TAKE THE ENGINE OUT. ESPECIALLY ON A SMALL ENGINE THATS N/A
I did both sides with the engine in and a bunch of other shit while I already had it torn to pieces and let me tell ya it’s definitely doable just expect a lot of time and cussing hahaha
You don’t need to take the engine out?
It's just the valve cover, if you dont get it then plz go away
Oh man I've been watching diy vids for this problem n all of them were copies of each other... And didn't actually do the show n tell... I mean you say what u r going to do, you do what u said WHILE explaining as you SHOW the steps, that was the best and most informative diy on Utube...
Thanks you guys thought my motor was toast! I got a 2000 nissan maxima se and one on back of motor near the passenger side and it was full of oil! Never seen that before except when I had a blown head on my altima one time and realized oil was flooding it after a wreck but this one just started doing it and never ran it hot or anything got almost 400,000 miles and still running fine and now all I need is valve cover so thank you guys!
“super simple fix” *literally has entire engine pulled from car*
Right smh shit
the engine does NOT have to be removed to remove a valve cover, the engine is most likely removed for another unrelated issue
🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣
It depends what kind of car your
working on, just fixed my 2006 toy tundra v6 it had a misfiring plug because it was covered with oil, only did one side, passenger side is easier than drivers.
Sweet! I've done this before on my old car, but that was just because I needed to change the intake gasket and I got an entire gasket set. This time my wife's car's got a ton of oil in the plug well
Thank you so much you make a very professional how to video by taking the motor out although I know I don't have to take my motor out to do this job at least I know what's going on.
I learned something. I'm having this problem. Thank you !
Great video. Very informative and straightforward. Thank you so much!
Thanks guys! Not quite as concerned as I was initially. Subscribed! Sure I'll be back soon!!! Lots of broken vehicles unfortunately
Thanks, straight to the point and helpful.
My bpark blup is running real good now, thank you for your video
Excellent, I always get good advice from you. Thank you!
Hands down best CZcams car guys..thank you for giving back🙏
Great video I love how you show the work rather than just talking

Thank you so much been trying to figure out what was going on . Valve cover gasket and the spark plug gaskets were damaged oil in one well put the rag in soaked up the oil pulled the plug cleaned it . but also all the ignition coils were pretty bunk so I pulled them all out pulled the springs out and cleaned them and the rubber inside with carb cleaner. no more misfire !!!!!
This is an excellent video about oil in the spark plug well. My car is 18 years old with original spark plugs in it. I found oil in most of my 6 spark plug wells. If found the threads of spark plugs from cylinders 2 and 4 soaked in oil. I have droplets of oil splattered on the underside of the hood and on the upper side of all the surfaces in the engine bay on the left side of the engine bay, where cylinders 2 and 4 of my V-6 exist. It appears that enough time had passed to oil and penetrate the threads and loosen the plugs enough that compression could force oil out past the spark plugs in a spray mist. My engine died 3 weeks ago, and oil in the spark plug wells is not my only problem.
Wow!!!! Thank you so much for the tip!!!! This is exactly what my 1.8 turbo engine is doing,! It has had missfire for so long and I could never fix! I do have oil in my wells!!! I am excited at last that I may finally get rid of the miss fire!! THANK YOU!!!!!
Is it a audi by any chance I have a audi a4 2.0 turbo and I think this might the problem or the fuel injectors
Did it fix the misfire problem @BuckGill? And how was the misfire?
The problem will come back people
Did you ever get rid of misfire?
@@lucyloo2228 Thats right i have a Audi A5 2010 2.0L. I got the head gaskit changed, Spark plugs changed and the problem came again after 1 week. Dissappointed man
Thanks a lot for your help!!
Appreciate..👍
Easay and effective! Very well done!
A big like for you! I apreciate it, i will change the gaskets.
Hi can I ask what kind the gasket? My tundra 2007 5.7 have the same problem oil on 1 spark plug
Thanks
Thank you for the video. Really helped me out. I just subscribed
Very helpful thank you it is my exact problem
Super easy instruction!
My elderly tenant was told she "Needs Engine". I asked what was wrong with the engine? That was all the information she had "Needs Engine" and it will cost $5,000. It won't start now and was misfiring before it quit...I decided to compression test it and went to remove the spark plugs and look at them and see it they had that nice tan color or not...I found oil in the spark plug holes exactly like this and when I took the plugs out, they looked filed out or points looked to be very dirty...I'm not sure if this will solve her starting problem but I'd give it a 80% chance...Her batt was down so could not do compression test...it needs 155-180 psi to be in speck per GM. I hate to see people get bent over...now, engine may have a problem, but we will see if I can get it started. Thanks for the good video, I had no idea why there should be oil in the spark plug hole. I'm not a mechanic, but know if you have compression, fuel, air, and spark the damn thing will run if timing is correct...you just have to hunt down any other problems after you get it running. It has exactly 100,487 miles on it and is a Buick Regal with the Ecotec 2.0L engine. On most cars these days that is not a lot of miles. I found out by accident the coil will pop apart and there is a mini fuse link inside of it and will test all 4 for continuity...just thought I throw that in, because I never in my life saw anything like it. The top of the coil will pull out of the rubber base and they you will see a miniature little fuse. Unbelievable when it fell out into my hand, I tested it and it tested good, now need to check the other 3. I don't think those mechanics even attempted to do a compression test...engine sounds quite and smooth when attempting to start it...I tried it a few weeks ago...her batt is dying because I had charged it two weeks about and it's now down again...she is going to need a new one. Watch out for Firestone and Goodyear throwing out some sweetner to get you into their shop like a $19.95 oil change...then, when they get you into their shops, they put the damdest sales pitch on you for what all was found wrong when they were changing the oil with the front end...;I swear they had me about convinced so I took it to another shop I knew who were trust worthy...Nothing wrong found! lol The Firestone man was such a good actor he would surpass most in Hollywood. Goodyear tried to get my dad like that back in 1970...my dad was too damn smart for them...lol
Thank you so much, I don't klnow yet but cyl 6 spark plug has oil on it I will know how to fix it. Shouldn't cost that much to fix. Thanks again a million times.
Thankyou , auto repair guys good information 👍
Helpful indeed my car has oil in spark plug number 2
Thanks so much your help.
U are really good.
Thanks for information 👍
Really well explained
Thanks really helpful
Thank you both
i would love to see you guys and chrisfix go to the junk yard and rebuild a whole car together. that would be youtube gold
This guy is a flippen legend
Thank you!
One further point after doing this a few times on Ford Fiestas ,do not bother just draining the oil out as a temporary fix ,always replace the gasket seal and then the spark plugs and most importantly replace the spark plug leads because once they are coated in oil for a while they become soft as the oil rots the material thus causing them to arc out etc .Gasket seal ,Gasket sealer ,plugs and plug leads ,petrol or white spirit to clean the rocker cover once off the engine and brake cleaner to clean the engine head oh and a nice little scraper to remove any old gasket sealer .2 hours should do you nicely but remember to let the sealer set for a while before starting the car up .Sealer is required at each end of the rocker cover over the curved part .
I’ve got that same problem now on fiesta 1.25 zetec. Thanks for the advice on all the materials needed
thanks
Very helpful
I always heard a tiny bit of brake clean before you start taking out the plug will help, and then when you get the plug out you do a very quick spray, not to soak but to go with the left over leaked oil to prevent it from filming so that it burns off more easily.
Love this guys videos, very informative
Very good!!
Greetings for you from Iraq
Thank you
Thanks for the info
AMAZING VIDEO
Spwark pwugs. Thanks for the video mate
Lol😂
Nice videos, I almost see around 20 videos and they are so helpful, but I want to know if you guys can make one solving the P0452 code in the Lincoln mkx
www.700r4transmissionhq.com/p0452-lincoln-mkx/
I love you guys!
On My Lincoln Intec 4.3 32 valve V8 there is oil covering plugs on 1 bank. Rubber on the rubber coil boot breaks down. Misfires haven't been an issue so far. It's apparently notorious for it.
Informative
Tq for your video. May I ask, in the combustion chamber, it there suppose to be any engine oil ? Since the piston ring is suppose to filter any oil from getting into the combustion chamber in the first place.
Had this problem on a Mitsubishi engine, It was a pretty easy fix. Night and day difference.
Whenever your spark plug tube seals went bad did it cause any ticking sound or engine noise?
Thanks a lot!+!
Thank you! Nothing I saw about this made any sense because the the tube and the coil is dry. Tube has a seal around it and coil seal is tight. I’ll drive til this sucker until it blows.
It's not always the gasket, some models are known to leak where the tubes are pressed into the head.
Hi Great video! i have a quick question ! my sparkplugs were dry however there was bit of oil on the outside of the coil is that normal ?
I notice its super clean when you open the cam valve. There's oil in mine (likely from the leak) should I clean this out 100 percent shiny like yours is leaving small oil all over not a bad thing? I cleaned it but yours looks spotless. Thanks in adavance.
I had this problem on my Ford Focus. It was because the valve cover wasnt tightened down enough.
Does the spark plug with oil have to be changed or just cleaned off? That wasn’t mentioned.
@@NN2PX8 I don't know. I imagine you could just spray it with carb cleaner and wipe it down really well and try it. I'm sure most will say "just replace it" but I'm advocate for re-using stuff
@@dudeguy7347 $40 dollars for a set of 4 plugs. hell might as well change them just to be on the safe side and not sorry later.
Worst video ever.. takes too long
nice
Can you go easy on GUYS...for the rest, keep up the good work 💪
Don't dwell on the minor flaws intead focus on the whole picture because this video helped me a lot.
When an auto place does the valve cover gasket do they change those plug gaskets??
Good explaining 👍 and I like your accent )
Masput
Thanks so much just found this on my Ford Mondeo 2.0L Zetec. And panicked as I thought it much worse
Had the same problem with my Mazda Cx7. Thought it was my spark plug gaskets, ended up being a cracked valve cover 😂
Don't forget to clean ignition coil from where oil slashed up on the tip
hi could you show us a mazda titan 2003 manual spark plug change pls
The best way to clean those spark plug wells is to use a shop vacuum. Put duct tape on the end of the vacuum and then pop a small hole in the duct tape. Get a long drinking straw from McDonald's and stick the straw in the duct tape hole .just a little so it is attached to the tape and vacuum. Then turn on the vacuum and point the straw down in the spark plug wells and start sucking up the oil and other debris. I also use that method to clean other small areas and inside the intake ports and valves
Can you use that method to remove the oil that leaked into the piston?
@@terrakoat let's say you remove the intake manifold (I'm not talking about the (air intake filter box)
I'm talking about the intake mani. So with the intake mani off 'the valves will be the only thing visible in those open ports that you will be able to get to for the most part.
Also when you turn off your motor some valves will be slightly open and some valves will be closed . You will definitely be able to clean out some debris in the exhaust valves and the combustion port but even on the open valves however your engine stopped on the rotation you might be able to reach the straw down a little.
if you get oil out from down under the open valves above the piston well I won't know, only you will know when you do the job, so while you suck just visibly watch the straw and see what you have getting sucked up.
If you can get a clear straw you will definitely be able to get a good look at what your results are.
Most likely you will get dry chunks of debris like I get when I do it to my cars or my friends cars. the straw might clog up a bit' just pinch it and it should break up the dried gunky debris and suck into your vacuum.
As far as your piston area you would honestly have to take the valve covers off the intake off the exhaust manifold bolts off the motor and then remove the head to do piston cleaning with the motor block exposed and visible.
What kind of car do you have and what engine?
Honestly if I were you I would just remove your intake mani and vacuum out the exhaust valve ports and then run a bottle of fuel system and engine cleaner that you pour into your gasoline tank to finish off the job to help burn off the rest of the residues left over while driving
@@terrakoat if you had oil in the spark plug wells like in this CZcams video we are commenting on, and you removed the spark plugs and accidentally spilled it down the spark plug well area the oil will travel thru that combustion chamber, around your exhaust valves the ports above your piston heads. The amount of oil is definitely negligible and not enough to really cause any alarm I would try to suck up what you can get either thru the hole where the spark plugs were that you removed and also remove the intake mani if you want to really clean up some junk.
But if you didn't spill oil down there and there is oil in the combustion chamber/ exhaust valve ports you definitely shouldn't have amounts of oil down there so you may have bigger problems if you have oil flowing above your piston heads right below the engines combustion point.
That should all be dry naturally
@@conormcgregor5460 is oil getting to spark plugs because the piston rings could be loose?
Hello, Is there anyway that the oil can make its way past the the spark plug washer and onto the piston when the spark plug has not been removed from the head..?
I need that video on ford fiesta
If I don’t have a misfire code, is it ok to not fix it? I just have a little oil in one spark plug and boot on 2011 camry four cylinder. Thank you!
Brilliant video!
I have the same issue with my Astra 2006 1.4 petrol.
I would like to replace all the seals but have no idea what's the right item.
Is it possible to buy the whole kit(seals)?
Thank you
After cleaning it out can you use the same coil
Could I get some contact information of the workshop in the video? I have pinging sound from my Elantra and also oil traces in the plug. I am in San Diego
Can oil get to cilindar this way, through spark plug, because i have white smoke coming from exaust
I wish my garage in my triplex wasn't just 30 feet long and narrow. I could do so much more auto stuff if it was just 5 feet wider haha. Need one of those contraptions you're using to hold the engine haha
Very nice video; keep up the good work
I have a Honda Car with 1.3 IDSI engine having 8 spark plugs. The engine is powerful but the only center two spark plugs get really black after one week driving. I replaced old park plugs with new NGK spark plugs but the problem is same.
Can you kindly guide which is causing this issue?
If the plugs are really black, it means that the fuel mixture in those two cylinders are rich, ie. it is burning more fuel than normal. This can be caused by a faulty ignition coil or a dirty air filter, however as it is just the center two cylinders, I would say its more of a spark issue.
Check to see if it is the ignition coil by swapping the center two coils with the outer two, and if the outer two spark plugs turn black, then replace the coils.
Changed my sparkplugs & fuel filter & one the cylinders had bunch of oil , & not only that my rpms r super low …idk if it was affecting the rpms from being so low or something
Osm vid
What about if you replace the gaskets and the leak comes back again? mine is not that much oil but there is some.
I used a syringe with a small tube attached got most of it.
I had a check engine light and the code reader said it was the ignition coil. I went ahead and changed the ignition coil, cables and spark plugs. When I was doing the work I saw oil on the spark plugs and wires. After I put in everything new the engine light came back on again. This time a misfire on all 4 cylinders. I put on the old cables and now reads misfire on cylinder 4? Is it the oil?
Hello Sir, I had oil pretty much covering the spark plug and took the plug out already with my bmw 330i 2001 3.0 liter. All the oil went back down the hole already. Anything I can do or should do from here?
93 Accord 16 valve
I just changed out the spark plug O rings, and it didn't work. I still have oil leaks in #2,3, and 4 of the plug wells, 😡😡😡.
What else could make it aek like this?
Torque???
I'm also now having an problem with it when it's cold. The idle will bog down intermittently, and almost stall, especially during warm-up. I took it out after it was warmed up, and it did it again not a block away from my house. I hit reverse, and not moving it again until I fix it.
Thanx.
Pt cruiser oil in spark plug tube periodic missing on acceleration hope this it! Fixing this weekend!
Does the spark plug with oil have to be changed or just cleaned off? That wasn’t mentioned.
On my 2015 dodge charger se not able to get one of the plugs out it's not getting loose or tight and I see something down in the cylinder no check engine light but has been misfire.
