- Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 1967! If you saw any of our Albums of the Year videos then you'll kind of know how this goes, but we've added a few new twists.
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

Only one winner this time.
Ruby Tuesday”
The Stones will continue to Roll, but they’ve lost their Rock.
Rest in Peace Charlie

Two thumbs up for Venus In Furs.
wanted to get cream on my list - - oh well - next year for sure
Any list that has the two best Velvet Underground songs works for me. I might swap Sunshine for White Room but otherwise wouldn't change anything.
@@TheDrectorsCut White Room is next year.
@@TheDrectorsCut I would have chosen "Swlabr."
The Moody Blues classic "Nights In White Satin" with a brilliant vocal performance from a young Justin Hayward.

Worst Song - "Come Back When You Grow Up" - Bobby Vee. Also "Girl You'll be a Woman Soon", but that song itself sounds pretty good.
Nice list, but what's wrong with "Girl, you'll be a woman soon"???
@@toonhkuitjes6382 LOL.. "different times" is what they say, but really??
@@toonhkuitjes6382 Title raises eyebrows, but the music might be Neil Diamond's best.
"Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon" rules.
@@ttmilbr I never really thought about it as an "underage love" song, since he also refers to himself as a boy in the lyrics ("the boy's no good"). I always just took it as a song in the same vein as "Thunder Road", where two young people run off together.
I'm with Joe. '67 is the best year so far and arguably the best year ever... just an explosion of styles and creativity.
A magical year.
I think I might actually say best year ever...not sure though.
My Top Ten for 1967

9)Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix Experience
10)What Am I Doin' Hanging Round - Monkees
My song of the year is “Sunday Morning” by The Velvet Underground, which may be one of my 10 favorite songs of all time. Gorgeous beyond words with that John Cale celesta. “Happy Together” by The Turtles is way up there too though, as is “Light My Fire” from The Doors, “Waterloo Sunset” from The Kinks, “So Long, Marianne” from Leonard Cohen, “A Day in the Life”, “With A Little Help From My Friends” and “Penny Lane” by The Beatles, “Venus In Furs” from the Velvets, and probably “Purple Haze” by Hendrix. “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” from Procol Harum, “Lucifer Sam” by Pink Floyd and a bunch of others are also contenders.
Sunday Morning is definitely my favorite song by Velvet Underground.
I listened through Songs of Leonard Cohen today and by the end thought...why don't I own a copy? Some of the best poetry on that album ...you forget over time how good....
All great songs. If I had to pick a best it would be Waterloo Sunset: life, love and London in 3 minutes.
Sunday Morning was technically released as a single in 1966, but yeah, amazing song! The VU & Nico is my favorite album of all time.

An incredible year for songs. Probably my longest list at the top for just top tier songs. Has both the 60s pop greatness that preceded it and the beginnings of the many directions music would go from here.
BILLBOARD
1. WINNER: *Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles #8* (To me the best Beatles song and a contender for best song of all-time. I loved the melody when I first heard on Anthology, but even more revelatory in its full production.)
2. *Ruby Tuesday by The Rolling Stones #1* (Fantastic! The recorder and the bowed string double bass sound are so great.)
3. *She's a Rainbow by The Rolling Stones #25* (Stones going full-on psychedelic pop and knocking it out of the park in what I'd consider their most underappreciated era.)
4. *Penny Lane by The Beatles #1* (Irresistible, super poppy classic. Pretty much the textbook example for them in the period.)
5. *Light My Fire by The Doors #1* (Generally partial to the pop songs of the era, but one I can get lost in thanks in no small part to the organ work.)
WILDCARD
1. *A Day in the Life by The Beatles* (Another full-on Beatles masterpiece that would win in most other years. Love every minute of it!)
2. *Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks* (Gotta be Ray Davies' most gorgeous song. Beautiful!)
3. *Alone Again Or by Love* (A brilliant fusion of folk, psychedelia, baroque pop, and mariachi.)
4. *The Fool on the Hill by The Beatles* (Always felt this one was really underrated. Some of my favorite melodic turns on this.)
5. *Care of Cell 44 by The Zombies* (A baffling flop on the charts. Top-class sunshine/baroque pop. More to come from Odessey and Oracle in '68.)
Too many wildcards for me this year, so my actual top 10 songs that missed get mentions. That's only going to become more of a problem ahead.
Top 10 HM:
Death of a Clown by The Kinks
Suzanne by Leonard Cohen
WORST:
An Open Letter to My Teenage Son #10 by Victor Lundberg (It might be just another of your typical spoken word novelty tracks if it weren't so aggressively nationalistic. No thanks!)
Care of Cell 44 is phenomenal. Look for it next year from me. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Anticipate another Zombies song will be taking top spot for me next year, and it's not even Time of the Season.
Great list. I would have liked to fit in Love but I couldn't pick a particular song. Forever Changes is a masterpiece. My #4 album of the year.

Worst song - Little ole man Bill Cosby
Unusually I feel the urge to rush to Jason's defence in the face of all the bullying. Jason's Hot100 picks are just sublime. I love them all. Really brave to pick the Cowsills, but it is such a wonderfully catchy song and so 1967. I have a feeling that Never my Love might pop up again in 1974 thanks to Blue Swede.....as a worst song!
Thanks Daffy
JASON and anyone fondly recalling The Cowsills. Check out The Blue Shadows. Billy Cowsill & Jeffrey Hatcher fronted this band based out of Vancouver in the early 90s. They released two CDs; On The Floor of Heaven and Lucky To Me. Had the pleasure of seeing them play a few shows in Ottawa and speak with them. Billy was so humble & genuine. He is one of the my favorite vocalists of all time. It's a shame there are so few recordings of him. He sadly passed away in 2006 at the young age of 58. Songs to search - Deliver Me, Think On It, Riding Only Down, On The Floor Of Heaven.
Will look into it. Thanks.

Jason, the early Bee Gees DO rule. That "Bee Gees 1st" album is incredible.

3. Jimi Hendrix Experience- Purple Haze
4. The Doors- Back Door Man (it's not my favorite Doors song, but still amazed how much it stands out on the playlist)
5. The Rolling Stones- 2000 Light Years from Home
The Fab Four's "Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields". Absolute pop perfection, two really inventive tracks. It only reached No.2 in the UK (shocking) , a run of about 11 straight No1's broken by Englbert Humperdink's "Please Release Me".
The Beatles- peak. 1. A Day in the Life 2. Strawberry Fields Forever 3.I am the Walrus 4. Fool on the Hill 5. Penny Lane . Honorable mention to Purple Haze and Light My Fire.
I'd re[;ace Fool on the Hill with All You Need is Love.
As much as I love I Can See for Miles (which is a lot), I have to give it up for the early Bee Gees too. Deeply underrated. Very inspired pick Jason.
I'll keep to only 2 Beatles songs (could have picked plenty more):
Hits:
5) What a wonderful world - Louis Armstrong
4) Dear Mr Fantasy - Traffic
3) White rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
2) Strawberry fields forever - The Beatles
1) Nights in white satin - The Moody Blues

1967 - Another GREAT year for music and the year I first started buying singles and albums with my own money. So difficult to narrow down - so many great ones had to be left off. I know I won’t be receiving any love from Jason for my top Wildcard picks. :)

Song of the Year: A Day in the Life
I could have filled my lists with Beatles songs, but I did that already a few weeks back. I was tempted to save Tuesday Afternoon for 1968 when it charted, but there's no guarantee it would have mad the top 10, so I included it here. This is fun, but it's getter harder. It will be agonizing in another week or two. And then again next summer, but in a different way.

Huge props to Kram for including Fairest of the Seasons by Nico. I’ve been binging Chelsea Girls lately. Probably my favorite pick of the channel for any year so far.
Huge props to Kramzer for his beautiful flower 🌸.. but seriously I agree 😀
Hesitated a lot between the Beatles and Stones top picks, but I think I'm leaning slightly more toward Ruby Tuesday, so Kramzer get my vote.

Pretty wild to see all the love for "Venus in Furs"....it's a killer track, just didn't expect it to show up here.
It won for me and it's one of my all time favorite songs. But I agree I'm surprised to see it in so many peoples list.

Surprised Daydream Believer didn’t make anyone’s list, I think it’s a perfect pop song. So pleasant it could cure someone’s sickness. I didn’t include it cause the album it’s on released the following year. I tend to go by albums over single releases. Maybe one of you will also pick it for 68.
I love Jason's list. Forgot about that Cowsills tune
I'm with you, I love every single one of his picks. 67 was a great year for pop rock.
You can trust Jason to do his thing👍...oh and if Jason's reading this I cooked dinner today to the sounds of ....Crack The Sky, Safety in Numbers!🤠 It's great. Keeps growing on me..... great lyrics

HM - Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to Love, Youngbloods - Get Together, Temptations - I Wish it Would Rain, Bobby Gentry - Ode to Billy Joe, Small Faces - Itchycoo Park
5. Vanilla Fudge - You Keep Me Hanging On (Heavier than anything until Led Zeppelin - Carmine Appice was a large influence for John Bonham and the band opened for Zep on their first US tour. Their take on the Supremes hit works best in the full version as the song was done in one take of 7:20 from which a 3 minute single was edited.)
4. Pink Floyd - See Emily Play (The early singles - written mostly by Syd Barrett - are a side of the band that many later fans know little about, probably due to the fact that they were not released on the LPs. Highly recommended to check them out Paintbox, Arnold Layne, Julia Dream, Point Me at the Sky...)
3. Aretha Franklin - Chain of Fools (After five long years of devotion to a man, she finds out that she’s just a link in his chain to be used and abused - those returning from Vietnam understood the song in a slightly different way. Just like with Respect, Aretha found herself again in some highly political context. Whichever interpretation you apply, it is a great song, recorded with the legendary Muscle Shoals crew and Joe South on the twangy guitar intro.)
2. Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale (Bach, Chaucer and the odd choice of language took you centuries back in time from the Summer of Love, everything in this song was unique and fascinating and that holds up until this very day for me. It was not on the band's debut LP as was so often the case in those years.)
1. Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe (The song was not included on Are You Experienced - except in the US where three single A sides that had pre-dated the album elsewhere in the world replaced three classic tracks, e.g. Red House. My encounter with this song and with Hendrix as such was his first single and there was no other Hendrix material yet to compare it to. The time was full of new sounds and bands and it was almost "normal" to hear something different every day but still this song was extraordinary...the half mumbled vocals over a guitar that came from way past Jupiter, Hendrix had you under his spell before he even played the first solo. And, the B-side was 51st Anniversary and mind blowing.)
Finally we’re on the same page, I really should have saved Hey Joe for this year. - Joe
yeah, i sort of missed those terrific early non LP Pink Floyd songs - damn you 1967
hey joe was my #2 , was my fav until about 5 years ago, and is my older brothers fav rock song ever i think great year
The Vanilla Fudge track was on my shortlist. It's pretty heavy for 1967 -- it's like some serious proto-sludge stuff.
Not just the 'Summer of Love' but also the year I was born*. Another very strong year even when I am limiting myself to the UK top 50 with some very good songs not making the cut:
Heroes & Villains - Beach Boys
Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles
Light my Fire - The Doors
Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix Experience
Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues
A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum
Itchycoo Park - The Small Faces
I can See for Miles - The Who
I was made to Love Her - Stevie Wonder
*I'm not 100% sure if The Summer of Love reached my home town 30 miles from London!
I think this may be the first of many appearances by Stevie Wonder over the next 10 years or so.
One of the guys picked the song that was UK Number 1 when I was born. A small clue: they were also number 1 on my 20th birthday!
This year is the year rock n' roll morphs into rock music, and rock starts to become an album-oriented form.
In no particular order, my top 5 favourite songs of 1967
1. "White Rabbit"
2. "Ruby Tuesday"
3. "I Can See For Miles"
4. "A Day in the Life"
5. "Penny Lane"
3/5 - nice!
Like all three of your picks, but Strawberry Fields Forever is the clear winner!
One problem with ranking songs (and albums) of the 60's is that The Beatles were SO amazingly good they could, and possibly should, dominate every year in which they were active. You almost have to do two lists: one for The Beatles and one for everyone else.
The Kinks mentions here are Waterloo Sunset and Death of a Clown. Nice tracks but if I picked them I would go to the album than the singles, for example

S.O.T.Y. for 1967 - For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield
I think that was their only hit but Buffalo Springfield did a lot better for me. I know the lyrics have lots of meaning but the music doesn't grab me at all.
Mr. soul rules. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Mr. Soul is great. Neil Young just had that nasty guitar tone right out of the gate.
@@TastesLikeMusic The whole Buffalo Springfield Again album is great. Though if picking my favourites Expecting to Fly, Bluebird and Sad Memory would be up there.
@@starrynight1657 That's cool. I just really happen to love the iconic guitar sound of For What It's Worth
Interesting discussion. Joe and Kramzer picked a lot of solid songs as only album lovers could but Jason got what 1967 really sounded like. For me though, the dominant song of the Summer of Love was "Whiter Shade of Pale": matching baroque pop with psychedelic lyrics. Good job, guys!
I’ll take Jason’s lists more seriously when he finally picks a rock song. - Joe

3. Get Together - Youngbloods
2. She's a Rainbow - Rolling Stones
1. A Day in the Life - Beatles
Worst: Cher's version of Hey Joe is as bizarre as it sounds but it didn't reach the top 40. I'll pick "An Open Letter to My Teenage Son" by Victor Lundberg, a spoken-word song criticizing his draft-dodging son with "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" playing in the background.
Best: Brown-Eyed Girl
The Byrds have probably one of the most difficult discographies to rank I can imagine, especially in the top 3 and the 6 to 9 spots or so, though #1 might be easy if “Mind Gardens” was replaced by a good song.
I had someone generously give me their CD’s last month and a couple Eurythmics albums were in there (Savage and Greatest Hits), so I’ll at least start to get myself a little familiar with those in the near future.
Yes, Joe. Best year ever.

Going with Jason this year- Judy In Disguise, The Association, early Bee Gees, and Carrie Anne rock!
I liked all 3 lists but surprisingly, liked Jason's the best. I was 9 years old in 67 and my older brother was the source of music in our shared bedroom - his record collection was largely shaped by the Top 20 list from KLEO-AM in Wichita, KS.
That is surprising because Jason has the corniest list. And he’s afraid of rock and roll. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Well, I said it was surprising. :-)
And I would add, Joe, I really appreciated your Motown selections. Loved the 4 Tops!
5. Sad Wedding - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell

3. Little Wing - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
2. More - Booker T. & the M.G.'s
1. The End - The Doors
The Most Important Honorable Mention of All Time:
The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday
For our friend Charlie Watts!
Awesome Beatles selections and Strawberry Fields Forever holds a special place with me.. out of all the songs mentioned today, Never my Love is the one stuck in my head so that probably is saying something.. Go Jason!!
never my love is awesome . It does leave a mark. [ it was my 11]
For me 1967 is the most difficult year to pick great songs. The quality of songs to choose from is off the charts. I honestly have no idea where to start. Every song on the playlist is a winner. Thankfully nobody did a Beatles only list! I'll just throw out my 10 best for 1967 which has some overlap with the Listography picks. No particular order. Some big hits, some minor hits, some no hit. I purposely avoided including any artist more than once.
1. Strawberry Fields (Beatles)
2. I Can See For Miles (Who)
3. Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum)
4. Waterloo Sunset (Kinks)
5. King Midas In Reverse (Hollies)
6. For What Its Worth (Buffalo Springfield)
7. Happy Together (Turtles)
8. Ruby Tuesday (Stones)
9. You Got What It Takes (DC5)
10. Purple Haze (Hendrix)
Thank you Jason - Lovely Rita is awesome! (Doesn’t get talked about enough). My top pick would probably be Penny Lane but really impossible to choose..
Excellent Beatles choice Kram.
Jason, I LOVE "Judy in Disguise"! It's probably my favorite Beatles tribute tune of that time.
Best year for singles in pop music history, hands down. The songs were strong up and down the Billboard Hot 100 and in every genre, including tons of one-hit wonders (Music Explosion, Soul Survivors, Easybeats, Small Faces) that were golden. Bands to debut on the chart included Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield, Procol Harum, Harpers Bizarre, the Doors, Buckinghams, Bee Gees, Classics IV and Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Whew! New sounds, new artists, talented established artists and so much more ... a bottomless pit of genius.
The Buckinghams actually haven't had a mention and do deserve it.
Love you guys. Gonna think about my list. Love Harry Nilsson too, hope you'd talk more about him in the future.
For sure. A top 10 artist for me. -Jason
I had to leave so many beloved songs off my list this year, it was a tough one to narrow down!
Hot 100:
-The Box Tops - The Letter
- Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale
- Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
- The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday
- Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Ain't No Mountain High Enough
Wildcard:

Worst: Almost picked that Bill Cosby one because it is so stupid but a lot of my hatred came from it being by him so I went with one that just made me cringe: "My Cup Runneth Over" by Ed Ames. I just hate the way he sings the chorus.
And my #1 from one of my all-time favourite albums: "Alone Again Or" by Love. I just love everything about it.
Super excited for Eurythmics and The Byrds coming up! :)
Good call on the Box Tops. It was on and off my list and ultimately didn't make it, but I'm glad someone mentioned it.
You have excellent taste, Alone Again Or is masterpiece that beats everything released this year in my opinion. Have you heard the version of UFO in their Lights Out album? Nearly as great as the original.
@@jesuschambers Thank you, I have not. I will have to check it out.

LOVE this series. And in honor of your tenth week of this awesome series, I caught up on all the playlists from the series, which was a JOURNEY. And, I came up with some fun lists.
Here are the years, WORST TO BEST, BASED ON YOUR LISTS AND NOTHING ELSE (like, pretending I knew nothing else of these years, which of these best lists makes for the best year of music)...
10. 1960 9. 1958 8. 1961 7. 1959 6. 1965 (Great year but these lists have too much acoustic slowness and I got sad listening to it) 5. 1962 4. 1963 3. 1964 2. 1966 1. 1967
The best songs I'd never heard before: Dion - I Was Born To Cry, Brenda Lee - Dum Dum
Songs on the "Worst" list that I don't hate: Splish Splash, The Chipmunk Song, Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Little Polka Dot Bikini, I'm Sorry, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, Hello Mudda Hello Fadda, Puff, The Magic Dragon, Last Kiss, Jolly Green Giant, Mrs. Brown You've Got a Beautiful Daughter
Songs on the "Worst" list that I actively like: Big Girls Don't Cry, Wully Bully, Ain't No Mountain High Enough (all Kramzer picks hmmm)
Reason I don't like 1965 lists that much: Jason's list. Unexpected awesome songs I totally forgot about in 1967: Jason's list.
My #1... Nights In White Satin - Moody Blues... (Contender for my favourite song of all time)
The worst... Good Morning, Good Morning - Beatles (Love nearly everything by the Beatles but not this)... I can excuse lesser artists for terrible songs...
Hot 100...
Massachusetts - Bee Gees
It's a Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown
Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
To Love Somebody - Bee Gees
Light My Fire - Doors
Wildcards...
A Day In The Life - The Beatles
I'm Waiting For The Man - Velvet Underground
Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks

hey joe, your gonna get my vote!
1967 was a pretty deep year that had fewer Beach Boys songs for the Listography crew to talk about. Once again, I'm going with all Hot 100 charting tracks this year.
1. A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum (#5). I shuffled around this list quite a bit, but this was always going to be #1. Just a perfect song, with one of the greatest organ parts of all time, a great Bach-inspired riff, Gary Brooker's super soulful vocals, and some cool Chaucerian lyrics. Lots of musicians have sung the praises of this track. It was a favorite of John Lennon, as well as Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, and Peter Frampton. Plus, the band is named after their manager's cat, which earns it some bonus points in my book.
2. The Dark End of the Street - James Carr (#77). The quintessential Memphis Soul track. This song's been covered by pretty much everyone -- Gram Parsons, Linda Ronstadt, Frank Black, Cat Power -- and even all the covers are excellent. It's simply too good a song to screw up.
3. I Am the Walrus - The Beatles (#56). When I was like 11, I got a stereo for my room that had a built in turntable. I got a copy of the Beatles' Blue Album on vinyl at a garage sale and played it to death. This song was probably my favorite. That began my love of the Beatles.
4. Friday on My Mind - The Easybeats (#16). I think I probably first heard Bowie's cover of this from Pin-Ups, which is great, but I love the original too. The frantic guitar is really cool. It was only recently I learned the guitarist from this band was the older brother of Angus and Malcom Young from AC/DC.
5. Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon - Neil Diamond(#10). I mentioned it last week, but Neil Diamond's '60s singles are nearly all perfect, and he simply does not get the love he deserves. I think most people know this through Urge Overkill's cover from Pulp Fiction, which is a really faithful cover.
Five more classics:
6. My Back Pages - The Byrds (#30)
7. Let's Spend the Night Together - The Rolling Stones (#55) (Rest in peace, Charlie)
8. Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles (#8)
9. White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane (#8)
10. I Think We're Alone Now - Tommy James & The Shondells (#4)
Went with Jason on the vote since "Strawberry Fields Forever" cracked my Top 10. "Purple Haze" and "Ruby Tuesday" were both like top 15 for me though, so I approve of all your choices, unlike in 1966.
cool picks, Eric.
I have to admit that I never checked for the original of Dark End of the Street...there are so many great covers of it and many of them sound like they own the song. Especially since it was written by one of those professional songwriter duos.
Strangely enough - after all they were from Australia - I did not like the Easybeat's original, only Bowie put it right for me later.
We share a love for Procol Harum, this is such a unique song, even in their catalog. Too bad that we may never see a Listography for them.
I haven't posted my list yet. but we share #2. I'm glad somebody else mentioned it. I think it's a song that doesn't get enough love.
Parsons version is my favorite. - Joe
@@roxannewalsh Yeah, apparently, the owner of Hi-Fi Records let the guys borrow his hotel room while they were all at a DJ convention to write the song if they let James Carr record it. Carr's version is excellent, though there are lots of great covers too. I think Percy Sledge also recorded it in 1967, and his version sounds more-or-less the same as the original.
I cannot reduce to a top 10. Have to do a top 20. Too many criminal omissions otherwise.
20. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "Love or Confusion"
19. The Spencer Davis Group - "Gimme Some Lovin'"
18. The Four Tops - "Bernadette." Joe nailed it.
17. The Young Rascals - "How Can I Be Sure."
16. Love - "You Set the Scene" - Lots of Forever Changes songs in my honorable mentions. Love the acoustic/orchestral mix and the two sections here, with the majestic fanfares closing it out.
15. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "If Six Was Nine" - While the US version of Are You Experienced is one of my top five albums, this is the best Jimi tune of the year.
14. The Beatles - "Penny Lane" - One of the best McCartney tracks of all time.
13. The Kinks - "Waterloo Sunset" - Stunned this couldn't even make the top 10. Many great songs on Something Else.
12. The Velvet Underground - "Femme Fatale" - Beautifully written pop song with delicate guitar work. Y'all were big-time hating on the Velvets by not putting any of the banana tracks here.
11. Otis Redding - "Try a Little Tenderness" - never mind, this is your craziest omission.
10. The Velvet Underground - "Venus in Furs" - No one else sounded like this. Amazing musical achievement.
9. The Velvet Underground - "All Tomorrow's Parties" - So moody and hypnotic. Love the guitar work.
8. The Who - "I Can See for Miles"
7. The Beatles - "All You Need Is Love" - This has become neglected among their '67 achievements, but the simplicity of the message in contrast to the huge orchestral arrangement, the musical quotes, and the little live George solo - are lovely.
6. Procul Harum - "A Whiter Shade of Pale" - Joe, it's a combo of Bach with Percy Sledge's immortal "When a Man Loves a Woman."
5. The Moody Blues - "Nights in White Satin" - Hard to imagine this is only number five, when it's such a tremendous romantic/proto-progressive achievement, but my top four is untouchable. Love the mellotron, the flute, the orchestration, Justin's tender vocal, and the harmonies. And the dynamics.
4. The Turtles - "Happy Together" - Jason is right, but this should be higher on his list. A perfect pop song. Oboe rules, though it’s not as great as those harmonies.
3. The Turtles - "She's My Girl" - No, I'm not some Turtles stan. These two songs tower above the rest of their catalog. This is just an amazing psychedelic pop composition, arrangement, and production. Love the harmonies in the chorus, which Foreigner sort of rip off for "Cold as Ice."
2. The Beatles - "Strawberry Fields Forever" - After this staggering achievement, which was such a quantum progression over Revolver, the Sgt. Pepper album overall should have been a letdown for most folks.
1. The Beatles - "A Day in the Life" - Best thing the best band ever, ever did. That vocal after the Paul section (which some actually argue was Paul, not John!) is just so incredible harmonically and emotionally.
My list was far longer than in '65, '66, and '68. Plenty of honorable mentions from Hendrix, Love, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Scott Walker, The Byrds, and Pink Floyd.
It’s too easy to do a top 20. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Take off the bottom ten and it's a top ten. Happy?
Had to edit out Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair/Canticle," as it actually came out in '66.

Worst Songs For '67 - The Beatles - Good Morning, Good Morning / Getting Better -
I like all of Sgt Pepper and Getting Better is one of my favourite tracks. So great having that and Fixing a Hole back to back.
@@starrynight1657 SPLHCB Is One Of My Five Best Albums Of All Time, My Humble opinion is that Getting Better, Lovely Ritta and Good Morning just don't belong on this album
The rest of album are Perfect Ten Songs.
