  • Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 1978!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

My one and two were You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory-Johnny Thunders and Another Girl, Another Planet-Only Ones. @@johnlefsky8731 Yeah Thunders and Only Ones are deserving.
Johnny always takes more than he needs

New names and new faces/sounds surely ruled the year, still the top spot goes to one of my first artists I discovered in music years before.
HM - Clash - White Man in Hammersmith, Ian Dury - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick, Chris Spedding - Silver Bullet, Patti Smith - Because the Night, Third World - One Cold Vibe (Couldn't Stop Dis Ya Boogie)
    5. Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device (Make sure you listen to the single version not the album one. Northern Ireland's version of The Clash and never again mention Green Day after listening to this - or stick with the Bee Gees right away.)
    4. B-52's - Rock Lobster (Their debut single to introduce a band that was unlike any other and stayed true to itself for much longer than anyone would have guessed.)
    3. Public Image Ltd - Public Image (John Lydon dismantles the legend of Johnny Rotten and starts what was to be called post-punk. Public image you got what you wanted/ The public image belongs to me/ It's my entrance, my own creation/ My grand finale, my goodbye)
    2. Jam - Down in the Tube Station at Midnight (The song is so intense and atmospheric that you can really smell the beer breath of the attackers.)
    1. Bob Dylan - Changing of the Guards (When Patti Smith selected the songs for her cover album in 2007, she chose this one out of all the Dylan catalogue. I fully understood why. One of his very best not from his classic albums. Epic.)

Deep within later punk, new wave and disco, there's still enough great rock to be had (and Kate Bush):
    1. Hemispheres: Cygnus X-1 Book 2 - Rush
    2. Sin City - AC/DC
    3. I Ain't No Baby - UFO
    4. Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush
    5. Gates of Babylon - Rainbow
    6. Heavy Horses - Jethro Tull
    7. Trick of the Light - The Who
    8. Never Say Die - Black Sabbath
    9. Brute Force and Ignorance - Rory Gallagher
    10. Was I Right or Wrong - Lynyrd Skynyrd
    11. Stained Class - Judas Priest
    12. Bicycle Race - Queen
    13. Pyramids - Budgie
    14. Trouble - Whitesnake
    15. Roll With the Changes - REO Speedwagon
We're definitely moving out of the classic rock era, but it's not going down without a fight. And with NWOBHM around the corner, that will spur on this sort of music to shout out one last battle cry, showing itself in the abundance of riches that was the year 1980. And then it just quickly fades away, to devolve into hair metal, thrash etc and endless retreads of itself until it finally disappears up its own backside, to re-emerge in copycat bands and parody.

Not really a clear cut winner for me either this year, but I might go with “The Model” by Kraftwerk, another showcase of their ridiculously catchy synth lines. I’m quite partial to “Heart of Glass” by Blondie, “Surrender” by Cheap Trick, “Thank You Friends” by Big Star, “Moving In Stereo” by The Cars and “Beast of Burden” by The Rolling Stones as well. Of course “Sultans of Swing” and “Wuthering Heights” are contenders as well - I would probably vote for the former in the poll by a very slight margin.

It’s truly a light year as far as the ‘70s go, but leaves a bit of room for discovery on this year’s playlist. My top 5 of the Listography selections below (first two are new to me, third I haven’t heard in a while):
    1. Fish and Whistle- John Prine [great representation of class struggle, wow]
    2. Wuthering Heights- Kate Bush [can really hear where Joanna Newsom got her vocal style from, but also the sweeping music!]
    3. The Big Country- Talking Heads [love the connections to urban planning here]
    4. Zanzibar- Billy Joel

    BILLBOARD
    1. *Just What I Needed by The Cars #27* (To me it's the perfectly crafted power pop song. I refuse to let classic rock overplay ruin this.)
    2. *Psycho Killer by Talking Heads #92* (Classic display of their funky quirkiness. More of theirs to come, but hard to match the rawness and energy here.)
    3. *Paradise By the Dashboard Light by Meat Loaf #39* (Basically an odyssey marrying 50s rock and roll and 70s rock opera. Every section on this monster has a part to play.)
    4. *My Best Friend's Girl by The Cars #35* (Another winning single. Can't go wrong with the rockabilly guitar incorporated seamlessly.)
    5. *September by Earth, Wind & Fire #8* (A rather irresistible slab of disco-funk. Iconic falsetto from Philip Bailey.)
    Late Chart Entry Bonus:
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band/With a Little Help from My Friends by The Beatles #71
    WILDCARD
    1. WINNER: *All Mixed Up by The Cars* (Side B of The Cars gets its share of praise, but I don't feel I hear enough about this closer having amazing pop hooks all over the place.)
    2. *Moving in Stereo by The Cars* (Could have been paired with #1 since this segues into it. The brooding pace and the synthline work to incredible effect.)
    3. *Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush* (A highly original statement that manages to be both fanciful and epic. Something about that swirling piano line in the chorus is just perfection.)
    4. *Outdoor Miner by Wire* (Melodic, super short post-punk that you won't hear unless you seek it out makes for a winning combination.)
    5. *Pump It Up by Elvis Costello* (Lots to note here between the classic bass at the forefront, danceable new wave groove, and Costello spitting out lyrics.)
    TOP 10 HM:
    Kangaroo by Big Star
(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea by Elvis Costello
You're All I've Got Tonight by The Cars
The Cars' debut is one of my all-time favorites so it's well-represented here. So many wildcards I was sad to cut. There's a freshness to the best stuff here as we inch closer to the 80s, but I'd also consider things drawing to the end as far as my absolute favourite period for music goes.
    WORST TOP 40:
Cheeseburger in Paradise by Jimmy Buffett #32 (About as distasteful as a song with that title suggests. An all around offputting tropical pop novelty.)
    WORST Runner Up:
Bluer Than Blue by Michael Johnson #12

    10. Elvis Costello & the Attractions - "Radio, Radio" - Really, guys? No picks from the album of the year?
    9. Ultravox - "Slow Motion" - A change in guitarists makes them a different band, with a far more straightforward approach. A post-punk pop gem.
    8. Public Image Ltd. - "Public Image" - They obviously headed in artier directions with their subsequent album, but this is a direct gem with a great guitar sound.
    7. Earth, Wind & Fire - "September" - Pop/soul joy.
    6. REO Speedwagon - "Roll with the Changes" - Great call, Joe. To me, what makes this song is the contrast between the great drum/piano groove and how Richrath's guitar fills and solos sizzle chaotically like a sirloin on the barby. The organ solo rocks too.
    5. Magazine - "The Light Pours Out of Me" - I love me some McGeoch.
    4. Siouxsie & the Banshees - "Jigsaw Feeling" - I know that some fans swear by the original lineup, but this tribally-pounding/serrated-edge guitar romp is the only time Morris and McKay make me question Budgie and McGeoch. Although "Switch" is a masterpiece as well.
    3. Kate Bush - "The Man with the Child in His Eyes" - This, to me, is the best track off of that great debut.
    2. Elvis Costello & the Attractions - "No Action" - In which Pete Thomas is the greatest drummer in history for three minutes.
    1. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - "Candy's Room" - The most intense thing he ever did. What a rush.
Honorable mentions: The rest of This Year's Model, but especially "Lipstick Vogue" and "Crawling to the U.S.A. (CD)," most of the rest of The Kick Inside but especially the title track, Cheap Trick's "Surrender," all of Wire's Chairs Missing but especially "Outdoor Miner," The Police's "So Lonely," The Cars' "Just What I Needed (very surprised that album wasn't represented)," Judas Priest's "Excited," "Beyond the Realms of Death," and "The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown)," all of Rush's Hemispheres, but especially "La Villa Strangiato," Blondie's "Heart of Glass," and Bob Marley's "Is This Love."

Hey Brudder. Another great list(s). Thank you for making Fade Away and Radiate your SOTY. IF it wasn't for the intense competition, that could have possibly been my pick as well. An HM but still 5 stars (as are just about all my HMs.) So . . you discovered the song during the Blondie listography? I still recall being fascinated w it upon first listen, now many years ago. I wondered how I didn't notice Sultans of Swing when going through the UK charts. I've now checked and realised that it didn't chart here until after it had hit the US chart in 1979. UK radio was reluctant to play it before then. It did stick out a mile to the 11 year old me on UK radio amongst the pop, disco and post-punk/new wave.

It's a very nice song and liked everywhere, but I do feel his smooth style is particularly suited to the US audience.
Kate Bush was much more quirkier and passionate and less suited to mainstream US taste.

    Another great year.
My SOTY would be Rainbow L.A. connection
    Others worth noting
    AC/DC down payment blues
    Clash Clash city rockers
    Elvis Costello no action
    Whitesnake Trouble
    Steve Hackett how can I
Jam A bomb in wardour street
    Jefferson Starship count on me
Kate Bush the man with the child in his eyes
    Buzzcocks what do I get
Many more possible for this year from Rush/Meatloaf/Saints/Undertones/Boomtown Rats etc etc
I like all of the guys choices for SOTY but would go for Jason's as I think that Street Legal is such an underrated album and True love is probably best song on it, closely followed by Is your love in vain

Oh not on next year's UK 100 either....79 is loaded in the charts btw....might be only my first or second winner from hot 100 since 65🧐....it wouldve made my top 15 or so. 78 was great year.

Welcome back to Pauls of the Year.
The comment where we rank the songs released by your favorite Pauls. This year, McCartney released Wing's London Town. I love the album cover despite Laine's goofy expression. A number of these songs were actually recorded on a yacht yet this is not considered "yacht rock." Curious.
Paul Simon released three songs: one already released, one a cover, and one song worth mentioning.
Backwards Traveller: 5/10. Why is that synth there?
With A Little Luck: 6/10. When there arises a question of something being 'cheesy' vs 'sincere,' I usually fall on the side of sincere. Not today.
Don't Let It Bring You Down: 6/10. Decent song that goes on far too long. Really great tinny guitar part.
Name And Address: 6/10. It's fine. It's ok. It's alright.
I'm Carrying: 7/10. A very light song, this sounds like what people think McCartney (1970) sounds like.
Deliver Your Children: 7/10. Wings on autopilot.
Famous Groupies: 8/10. I was worried this was going to be the 70's equivalent of Drake's "Fucking Fans," one of the worst songs ever made.
London Town: 8/10. A beautiful song with some great guitar in it, even if it only solidifies Wings as mediocre post-Beatles output.
Children Children: 8/10. I don't understand the hate for Paul's Granny Music. Maybe that just makes me a theatre kid at heart.
Girlfriend: 8/10 but no one in the world can tell me MJ didn't do it better. It was literally written for him. I do appreciate McCartney's vocal range though.
I've Had Enough: 8/10. This is the best Wings album I've heard yet which isn't saying *that* much.
Morse Moose and the Grey Moose: 8/10. This becomes so choatic and loud near the end that I wonder why McCartney never dabbled in metal proper, especially considering the role Helter Skelter had on the genre.
Cafe on the Left Bank: 9/10. This makes me hate the French less.
Cuff Link: 9/10. This is like the McCartney II to Backwards Traveller's Wonderful Christmastime. A brilliant use of electronic instrumention forever linked with a terrible one.
Stranded in a Limosinse (Paul Simon): 9/10. Simon's songwriting really benefits from this songs jaunty piano, hand clapping percussion, and a well-placed horn section.
Like and reply for more! Hope the listography community gets a kick out of this because I plan on doing it till the show ends or I get bored.

@@12spanku to be honest, I haven't heard of him till this comment but I'll look into him for sure. Might only count his solo career since the rest of the Pauls are being covered solo with the exception of Wings which, imo, was mostly just McCartney's band (especially given they'd release music as "McCartney and Wings.")

McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" has actually grown on me a bit over the years. That weird, twangy-synth opening--it's more akin to 70s horror film music but in a Christmas track lol

Nice pics guys. Yes Something in the Night is special Kramz and my fav off that album. Running on Empty classic, re Because the Night, Patti made it great. I do love Wuthering Joe it’s a great pic, it’s very cool and I really like the Dylan track, so good but Sultans wins it. Love Dire Straits and Mark, a unique sound and song.

On the first five choices IAW Jason; good choices. A bit surprised that Kramzer didn't pick anything from 'Some Girls". Also "Heart of Glass" - one of the songs of the year IMO. "Roxanne' by the Police. In '78 that song was a mindblower. "Le Freak" by Chic. "What's so funny about PL&U" by Costello. And for myself" You can't put your arms around a memory" Johnny Thunders
