  • Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 1971!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

Yet another great year for music. I was a junior in HS and I took it all for granted because I was spoiled growing up in the 60's. I didn't realize the explosion of great music was the exception, not the rule.

    2. One In a Hundred (Gene Clark/White Light)
    3. The Song of the Wandering Aengus (Donovan/HMS Donovan)
    4. Orleans (David Crosby/If Only I Could Remember My Name)
    5. The Fountain of Salmacis (Genesis/Nursery Crime)
    6. Baby Blue (Badfinger/Straight Up)
    7. Roundabout (Yes/Fragile)
    8. Won't Get Fooled Again (The Who/Who's Next)
    9. Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin/Led Zeppelin IV)

I fully agree to your assessment that growing up in those years we just took the endless stream of great music for granted, only in hindsight it became clear how very lucky we were. When I look into my collection from 1969 - 75 there were 2 albums of 4 star or better on average every week. It was just a big adventure and so many different styles and approaches to music. (The good thing is that everything is still accessible today...except for the pleasure of first discovery.)

These late 60s/early 70s years are all pretty great to me all around. So many classic songs that have just aged really well. This is no exception, and the many great albums coming out around this time don't hurt either.
    BILLBOARD
    1. *Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) by Marvin Gaye #4* (Mellow and smooth. The subtle backing vocals take it to another level.)
    2. *Wild Horses by The Rolling Stones #28* (Bittersweet country ballad. Easily among my favorites of their post-60s songs.)
    3. *Another Day by Paul McCartney #5* (To me his most Beatles-esque solo single, in all the best ways.)
    4. *What Is Life by George Harrison #10* (Classic single from the previous year's All Things Must Pass album.)
    5. *Stay With Me by Faces #17* (Just a really fun rocker with killer guitar all over the place.)
    WILDCARD
    1. WINNER: *Surf's Up by The Beach Boys* (Smile-era masterpiece finally sees the light of day. Preference goes to the later-released versions with Brian on lead throughout, but the song is stellar in any form.)
    2. *Life on Mars? by David Bowie* (Glorious, dynamic classic that is among his absolute best. I love the strings especially.)
    3. *Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin* (Classic rock epic for good reason. I love the way it builds and I'm not sick of it at all.)
    4. *Caroline Goodbye by Colin Blunstone* (Lush baroque pop with a melody that sounds somehow ahead of its time. Highly recommended for fans who know him from the Zombies.)
    5. *'Til I Die by The Beach Boys* (Beautiful harmonies set to a haunting melody and Brian at his most nihilistic.)
    Top 10 HM
    Queen Bitch by David Bowie
    L.A. Woman by The Doors
    WORST:
Chick-a-Boom (Don't Ya Jes' Love It) by Daddy Dewdrop #9 (Really annoying song that gets stuck in your head. Terribly sung and the music is plodding as can be as well. It's like a worse cousin of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show's "Cover of the Rolling Stone".)
    Worst Song Runners Up:
    Once You Understand by Think
Battle of Hymn of Lt. Calley by C Company featuring Terry Nelson

Of the 26 songs I played and replayed this week, 20 of them could have slotted in the top 5. This year was brutal. I had to limit my playlist to 26 songs to keep it under 3 hours. Long songs dominate my list, especially the deeper cuts that did not crack the top 5. In the end, this is what I have:
    Hot 100 charts:
    1. Brown Sugar - The Rolling Stones
    2. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
    3. Let's Stay Together - Al Green
    4. Maggie May - Rod Stewart
    5. Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
    Wild cards:
    1. Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
    2. Starship Trooper - Yes
    3. Maggot Brain - Funkadelic
    4. Baba O'Riley - The Who
    5. Life on Mars - David Bowie
Song of the Year: Rock and Roll
Led Zep wins for the second year in a row. This surprised me. But Rock and Roll is one of my all-time favorite songs from any band, and I decided earlier in this process that I was not going to punish songs for being popular and thus overplayed. Won't Get Fooled Again crept into the top 5 when I discovered a higher rated song was not released as a single until 1972. I could have slipped it into the Wild Cards, but instead I'll chart it next week.
One more note-- I can tell you who comprised the Donny Osmond market. I was in fourth grade at the time. Every fourth grade girl was in love with him. So there's your answer. To appreciate Donny Osmond, you have to channel your inner fourth grade girl.
And one more thing. Slate has a great podcast hosted by Chris Molanphy. The current episode is focused on the Hot 100 charts for 1971. It's worth a listen as a companion piece to this episode.

Joe’s pick of “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” for worst of the year is so ridiculous that it almost makes me want to flash forward in my mind to a Prince Listography scenario where Jason gives Purple Rain 2-1/2 stars. 😜
I’m thinking “Life on Mars?” (my favorite Bowie song) would be the winner for me. Also in contention is probably my favorite Genesis song “The Return of the Giant Hogweed”, “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “Baba O’Riley” from some obscure album called Who’s Next, the great “unplayed live for over 30 years” Yes song “South Side of the Sky”, “One of These Things First” from Nick Drake and yeah, I guess “Stairway to Heaven” too.

Most of the kitschy radio hits were great - Draggin the Line, Resurrection Shuffle, Sweet City Woman, Don’t Pull Your Love, I Just Wanna Celebrate, Mr Big Stuff, even Chick a Boom. The soul hits this year was a tidal wave of greatness. Mercy, Mercy Me; Just My Imagination; Give More Power to the People (Chi Lites); Smiling Faces Sometimes; What You See Is What You Get; Tired of Being Alone; and Ain’t No Sunshine. I even loved If Not For Young by Olivia and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by Joan Baez because I was too young to have heard or know about the originals yet. It was a magical year of ratio hits for a ten year old discovering rock music.

My vote goes to Jason’s pick of Graham Nash “Better Days”. I agree that “Songs for Beginners” is an excellent album, and I’ll even go further and say that the follow-up album “Wild Tales” is equally as excellent. When Jason picked “Songs for Beginners” as his album of the year, it inspired me to take another listen to a record that I hadn’t paid much attention to before. I fell in love with it. Then discovered the genius of “Wild Tales”. So thank you for pointing me in the direction of Graham Nash.

I was 12 in this year and I can only confirm what the boys say in the intro, radio did not play a role anymore (except for a pirate station we had that was influenced by Radio Caroline in offshore Europe, they even broadcasted some programs taped from that station). I did not care about charts, it was all albums and word of mouth and looking for album coverinfo. Some great songs in hindsight made some chart entries in some countries but that did not matter at all at the time.
Since all really great songs were on top albums, I go deeper this year in my selection.
HM - Faces - Stay With Me, Sly & the Family Stone - Family Affair, Rare Earth - I Just Want to Celebrate (The In Concert version that was as well released in 1971 was even better), Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee, Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
    5. Harry Nilsson - Jump Into the Fire (Without You was the big (s)hit from the album, this was the unlikely second single from Schmilsson - but go for the album version with Herbie Flowers' bass solo and Chris Spedding in full flight.)
    4. Slade - Get Down and Get With it (There may not have been any week in the first half of the 70s that did not have a Slade song on the charts in the UK. Any of their songs is great guilty rock 'n' roll pleasure, nothing more - but that is also some achievement and I simply love them for the sheer fun of it...What can be better than Slade doing Little Richard? Slade Alive is among the best heavy metal live albums of all time.)
    3. War - Slippin' Into Darkness (Their studio output always was a bit too "watery" for me, their best is the 1973 Live album, which features an 18 minute version of this song with Lee Oskar's greatest harmonica performance ever.)
    2. Uriah Heep - Lady in Black (Every hard or heavy band needs their acoustic ballad that builds up to the Stairway finale...few however have a writer like Ken Hensley who can come up with such an enduring classic. From the Salisbury album, it was successfully released as a single in some countries but originally not in the UK itself. Even David Byron refused to sing it, so Hensley provides the lead vocals here. Over the years however, it became one of the band's staples.)
    1. T.Rex - Get It On (Marc Bolan doing Chuck Berry - he pays his dues to the master in the outro...meanwhile I was still thinking...This song never gets old.)

And BOOM, with the onset of McCartney Solo works, I'm now with Jason HAHA. At least for those two songs. I would also add "Back Seat of My Car" from Ram as a wild card pick (and honestly I would pick Another Day above Admiral Halsey but that does not change Joe and Kramzer being plain wrong about this one). Other than that, love the Yes pick from Kram and Stay With Me from Joe as well! And Life on Mars, but gosh I also love Oh You Pretty Things just about as much. Anyways, what a fun year, loved this vid! Totally not ready to actually make my own list, but I AM gonna go listen to the playlists, excited to check out the Graham Nash song (I've listened to that album and like it, just can't remember...) EDIT, forgot, LOVE Surfs Up too! A total Beach Boys Fave AND most importantly, y'all's Beach Boys Videos were the first ones I watched! Started the whole Listography obsession...

Watching the video has inspired me to highlight my favorite songs not mentioned from the same albums:
Moonlight Mile by the Rolling Stones (from Sticky Fingers)
-Wild Horses is great, but I was absolutely floored when I first heard this outside in a state park on a summer evening with friends. Like Joni's "River" song, the winter setting is so vivid no matter what time of year you listen to it.
Chain Letter by Todd Rundgren (from The Ballad of)
-I remember being baffled when Jason picked this album as his favorite of this year. I was already a Rundgren fan, but I had brushed this one off as an unmemorable precursor to Something/Anything. I decided to revisit it and it's incredible how much I started to appreciate the richness of the compositions and how well he demonstrates his songwriting skills on both the piano and guitar. The piano ballads definitely grew on me, but "Chain Letter" is the track that really strikes you on first listen.
Little Green by Joni Mitchell (from Blue)
-Hard album to choose, but the subject matter of this one is so unconventional from anything else that was being written around this time. Joni sings about heartbreak better than anyone, but a song about giving your baby away hits even harder.
In the Back Seat of My Car by Paul McCartney (from Ram)
I love the Ram album so much, and I'm pretty surprised the closer is barely known by anyone. It's one of McCartney's great epics. Listening to Linda and him singing "We believe that we can't be wrong" together as if they were ten years younger gets me every time.

I have to agree that 1971 is possibly the greatest year in music history - the strength in depth means that some all time greats have to miss out:
    Billboard Top 100:
    Maggie May - Rod Stewart
    Imagine - John Lennon
Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves - Cher
    Superstar - Carpenters
Without You - Harry Nilsson (I had this for 1972 before Jason mentioned it first charted in late ‘71)
    Wildcards:
    Bargain - The Who
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking - Rolling Stones
    Echoes - Pink Floyd
    Jeepster - T Rex
Worst song: Johnny Reggae - The Piglets
(Another shocker from the UK - incredibly, this was a number 3 hit! It should be listened to once if you’ve never heard it before, just so you can experience how ghastly it is)
Song of the Year: Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin
(A timeless rock masterpiece from arguably the greatest rock band ever. This song will still be as popular in 50 years time as it has been over the half century since it was released)

Kram is right, more important than the competition (but the competition is a fun angle) is sharing your ideas about some great music! I missed so many good songs from this year, but thanks to you I know them now! Never bothered to listen to Joni Mitchell before, but wow, is she a load of feelings and beautiful music! I really like what I've heard of Gene Clark this week! How did I not know "Surf's Up"? An incredible song! I thought "How Can I Tell You" was so lovely in its composition and its message. "Hazey Jane II" was delightful, I really like the horns that carry the song along. Nilsson's version of "Without You" is the best one because he sings it exactly right.
"Go Away Little Girl" is a terrible song, but since its a cover, written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, I don't know if Donny Osmond should take all the heat for how it turned out. Have to agree with Jason though, "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" is a fun song, even if it is kind of weird.

    1. Rainy Days and Mondays, The Carpenters

Worst: Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, Paul McCartney. Screechy is a theme for this year’s ‘worst’, I guess. When ‘Hands a cross the water’ kicks in, Paul’s inner Donny comes out.

Another Day is a great song.
Uncle Albert it's one of those puzzling US no1s and not every McCartney fan loves it. He had other singles in the 70s that deserved to do better. It's got a smooth sound I guess and that's why it did well there.

@@179rich Uncle Albert has some stuff I like. Some part of the opening section reminds me of Paul Simon's self-titled, maybe in some vocals. It's well arranged.
Then we get to the chirpy tune which is good.
The 'hands across' part isn't bad but it doesn't have the impact for me of the the more tightly done Band on the Run. There's a thin sound to the vocals there, which could be off-putting. The interlude 'live a little' and the very end where the pace picks up seem too slack.

Great choice with 'Another Day' Jason. It is an incredible 'memory' song with an emotive musical landscape. Some great choices from Joe and Kram too. This year stands out as possibly the greatest of the 1966 to 1973 zenith period for album releases although it's no slouch for singles either.

Some of your choices are the proof that progressive rock at that time was MUCH more than just Genesis or Yes (even though they were still good bands back then) and that those bands covered a wide spectrum
      - Nine Feet Underground rivals Supper's Ready any day
      - Plain Truth is a killer tune
      - Hawkwind were at their best with Lemmy on board until 1974
UFO were quite a different band on the first two albums, I always loved Prince Kajuku
The ZZ Top song is NO Stones cover while GFR is and it is a good one despite the original being impossible to beat
Jefferson Airplane were already nearing their end but still capable of the occasional great song even on Bark and Long John Silver.
You could have chosen almost any song from Alice Cooper's Killer, their best album
(And for those who always say that I would know nothing about heavy metal, check those early Budgie albums and we can talk eye to eye.)
The whole Fireball album is one of my top 3 Purple albums and the title track is hot lava.

1971 wasn't quite the embarrassment of riches 1970 was, but there's still a lot of classic songs here. I thought the Hot 100 was particularly strong this year, and there was almost no need for wild card picks in my top 10.
    1. Bell Bottom Blues - Derek & The Dominos (91). Joe alluded to it last week, but Eric Clapton's best work was when he was a sad bastard pining for George Harrison's wife. I always loved the line, "You won't find a better loser," which is simultaneously cool and pathetic.
    2. Imagine - John Lennon (3). I wanted to omit this because it's one of those songs I've probably heard to many times, but it's a great song nonetheless. There's a really excellent version from the Jerry Lewis Telethon on CZcams which features Lennon on electric piano and a horn section.
    3. Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones (28). Gram Parsons may or may not have written this or co-written it with Mick & Keith, but everyone was too stoned to remember. Beautiful song though.
    4. Without You - Nilsson (1). One of the greatest cover songs of all time. Badfinger's original is decent, but Harry Nilsson kicks it up several notches. The vocal performance on this is amazing.
    5. What is Life - George Harrison (10). George's most rockin' song since "Taxman". That fuzz riff is one one of my favorite guitar riffs of all time.
    6. Maggie May - Rod Stewart (1). Rod Stewart is unquestionably lame now, but for a brief period in the early '70s he was pretty awesome. Ron Wood slays it on both bass and guitar.
    7. Sweet Jane - The Velvet Underground (WC). Great song. All the covers are great. Lou Reed knocks it out of the park on this one.
    8. Cherry Oh! Baby - Eric Donaldson (WC). The Stones did a pretty great cover on Black and Blue when Keith was in his reggae phase. Killer reggae tune.
    9. Walk Away - James Gang (51). The guitar tone on this is fantastic, and it's pretty heavy for 1971. "Funk #49" just missed my 1970 top 10, but this is probably a better actual song with some cool lyrics about a relationship breaking down.
    10. Mother - John Lennon (43). Eddie Vedder was just a tiny tot when this was released, but he undoubtedly took some notes about how to write a great tune about your less than ideal relationship with your parents.
For the vote, none of your songs were on my radar for being a song of the year for me in this or any other year. Never heard that Graham Nash song before. Several Led Zeppelin songs were on my shortlist, but "When the Levee Breaks" wasn't one of them. So, I'll throw poor Kramzer a bone and go with Joni Mitchell. I'm not a big Joni Mitchell fan, and only became aware of that song when Rick Beato did a video on his favorite Christmas songs last year. Ironically, I don't really like Christmas either, but it's a good song in spite of all it has going against it.

@@179rich Yeah, I only learned of that "Imagine" version maybe 5 years ago or so, and it definitely breathed new life into the song for me. I probably prefer it to the original at this point.

Thank you Joe - at least someone picked one song from Zep 4. Good on Kram for the Yes love too. But Imagine is one of the best songs ever written and Uncle Albert is a great song…McCartney stitched together songs like this in the Beatles. Sounds like it could have been on Abbey Rd. I started listening to the radio at 10 years old hearing these songs and falling in love with rock n roll that summer. Maggie May, Layla and Won’t Get Fooled also towering anthems from that summer. BTW, I always listen to the obscure or lesser known cuts. That’s how you learn and broaden….

And I did take Jason's advice and listen to all three songs before voting, since I was unfamiliar with River and Better Days. Didn't change my opinion of When The Levee Breaks being superior. To each their own, I guess...

so many great songs, it was heartbreaking. I agree with Jason in loving Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey." it's possibly my favorite McCartney solo song. I'll mention one more that didn't make my top 5: Sly & the Family Stone's "Thank You for Talking to me Africa" maybe the funkiest most laid-back song on There's a Riot Goin' On.
    5. Isley Brothers - "Ohio/Machine Gun" (it's a testament to the strength of this band that they did a medley cover of Neil Young and Hendrix and pulled it off)
    4. Alice Cooper - "Ballad of Dwight Fry" (this band was on fire in 1971-2 classic albums, and "Halo of Flies" was a very close 2nd for me)
    3. Rod Stewart - "Every Picture Tells a Story" (possibly my favorite song and vocal performance by Rod)
    2. David Bowie - "Queen Bitch" (my favorite track off Hunky Dory)
    1. Can - "Mushroom" (as in nuclear blast cloud-this song cooks!)
