  • Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 1970!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

Hi - interesting list - i had that kinks song as HM - Carpenters are popular here, which I find encouraging (i went thru a major carpenters phase a few years ago) - i had a few cat stevens songs as HMs - big year for the Cat Man

@@NaughtyVampireGod Hey. Yeah, 70-71 are the big years for Cat. He'll probably make my top five next year as well. Definitely nice to see Carpenters fans on here. I knew "Darling" would win but "Close To You", "Only Just Begun" and "Crescent Noon" are also top-level. After checking out your list I can't believe I overlooked Morrison Hotel!

      @NaughtyVampireGod Před 2 lety

@@cheapcinemachannel4548 Hey . . . For Cat the peak is probably 70-71 - you got three fine albums in a 2 year period. However I think you can push the line out to 74. His 72-74 LPs are all very good (would need to hear Foreigner album/suite again tho). Just re-listened to Catch Bull at Four recently and there are some top 10 contenders there - at least HMs. Plus "Oh Very Young" is probably guarenteed to be on my 74 list.

@@NaughtyVampireGod The 72-74 albums are all worth hearing. He was still on a roll to an extent. I have mixed feelings about Catch Bull at Four but it does have "Sitting". There are also a couple on Buddha and the Chocolate Box that I like a lot. Like yourself I'll have to give Foreigner a refresh listen.

Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down contains maybe my favorite lyric ever - "then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes and found my cleanest dirty shirt". Jason mentioning this song and Kramzer's appearance in today's "top songs" brought it to mind.

As I considered my favorites from 1970, my heart kept leading me toward the memorable pop/power pop/soul singles from the year (some of which seemed to come out of nowhere) and therefore mainly away from the usual suspects--the Beatles, together and solo, Neil Young, D[eric] and the Dominos, etc. Thus:
    10) "Indiana Wants Me," R. Dean Taylor
    9) "Bridge Over Troubled Water," Simon and Garfunkel
    8) "Patches," Clarence Carter
    7) "We Gotta Get You a Woman," Todd Rundgren
    6) "In the Summertime," Mungo Jerry
    5) "I'll Be There," Jackson Five
    4) "Into the Mystic," Van Morrison
    3) "For the Good Times," Ray Price
    2) "No Matter What," Badfinger
    1) "O-o-h Child," Five Stairsteps

In 1969 and 1970 it was Creedence who ruled, but I omit them here since I just bought their albums at the time, they were full of hits AND deep cuts that were just as good.
HM- CSNY - Ohio, Christie - Yellow River (written by Jeff Christie for the Tremeloes, but when they rejected it, he released it himself...covered by countless artists including REM.), Lynn Anderson - Rose Garden (Written by Joe South who was able to reach rock fans more than once, just see the Deep Purple version of Hush or the often covered Games People Play. He also played on Dylan's Blonde on Blonde sessions.), Temptations - Ball of Confusion (the full title goes on That's What the World Is Today and has been true every day since the song was released.), Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Lucky Man (Keith's first meeting with the Moog, they never again were as fresh and inventive as on their debut), Stephen Stills - Love The One You're With
    5. Atomic Rooster - Tomorrow Night (Heavy keyboard contributions from the band's only permanent member Vincent Crane were their signature - the constant line-up changes prevented the band to ever really break into the big league. Carl Palmer had just left when this song and their second LP Death Walks Behind You was recorded. Their only other chart entry was Devil's Answer from the same sessions but never released on LP.)
    4. Fleetwood Mac - The Green Manalishi (The last single of the Peter Green era, like most of their best songs it never appeared on LP. Darker than Black Sabbath it may reflect Green's state of mind before his hiatus. A song you never forget once you heard it.)
    3. T.Rex - Ride a White Swan (Legions of artists have tried to capture this magic. A masterpiece just a bit over 2 minutes, written and recorded in a day, just some layered guitars, a bass, a tambourine (+clap) and the wizardry of Tony Visconti.)
    2. Uriah Heep - Gipsy (UH were one of the bands that always stood in the shadow of their contemporaries like Deep Purple or Black Sabbath but were able to maintain a solid fanbase for 50+ years nonetheless. At their peak moments they could be in the same league and the first song of their first album is one of those monsters, an all time classic with Ken Hensley's heavy organ solo and Mick Box's guitar.)
    1. Eric Clapton - Let it Rain (written by Eric with Bonnie Bramlett, whose band he would join later, and with stellar contributions from Stephen Stills on bass and Leon Russell on piano, this is Clapton at his best. Great guitar work to a great song that deserves it. Next time you feel like listening to Layla just check out this one instead...Clapton's self titled first solo album is one of those forgotten gems - it also includes JJ Cale's After Midnight two years before the guy recorded it himself.)

This year was next to impossible to narrow down to 10 songs, but I think I finally got there. Tomorrow, this could be totally different. Good year for the Kinks and songs about Jesus.
    1. Victoria - The Kinks (62). Released as a single in late '69, but didn't crack the Hot 100 until early '70. One of my favorite Kinks songs. The chorus melody is so infectious and the horns just make this song pure joy. I also always love Dave Davies yelping backing vocals in the last verse.
    2. Long as I Can See the Light - Creedence Clearwater Revival (WC). My favorite CCR song on my favorite CCR album. Just a classic Memphis soul style ballad. The sax is great.
    3. Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum (3). If only all Christian rock were this cool. Norman whips out what might be the greatest fuzz tone in rock history in this ode to the man upstairs.
    4. Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin (16). I can only assume many minds were blown when putting on side 1 of Led Zeppelin's third album. Every element of this song is totally badass, and it's less than 2 1/2 minutes long. Zep finally showed they were more than a blues cover band on this baby.
    5. Strangers - The Kinks (WC). Always loved this Dave Davies sung track from Lola vs Powerman. It's such a beautiful song, and the big loose toms just sound massive.
    6. The Man in Me - Bob Dylan (WC). I'm not a huge fan of New Morning, but this might be Bob Dylan's most immediately charming song. It's got this goofiness to it, but it's also a sweet song and pretty darn catchy.
    7. Lola - The Kinks (9). Pretty ahead of it's time in terms of subject matter. Also, the resonator guitar is great and the bridge section is just a killer.
    8. 25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago (4). I was in my 20s before I heard this, and I always assumed Peter Cetera and Chicago were always just an incredibly lame band only liked by moms in station wagons. This is proof otherwise. Fuzz, Horns, this song has it all.
    9. Helpless - Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young (WC). Almost picked Neil Young's "After the Goldrush", but I like this track a bit better. Neil wrote some gems in the '70s, and this is one of his strongest.
    10. My Sweet Lord - George Harrison (1). Despite the melody being lifted from "He's so Fine", it's still a great track. The wall of acoustic guitars (played by Clapton, three members of Badfinger, Peter Frampton, and George himself) sounds huge, and writing a religious song combining Christian and Hindu dogma is pretty out there.
I'll probably vote for "Layla" in the poll. None of the songs were on my shortlist for 1970, but "Layla" is in like my top 20 for 1971 when it charted on the Hot 100. "Let it Be" isn't bad either though. I've never been a big Deep Purple fan.

You probably already know this, but here's my favorite factoid about "The Only Living Boy in NY".... both Paul and Artie were originally cast in Mike Nichols' film "Catch-22", but the original script would've made for a 4 hour movie. So screenwriter Buck Henry had to make cuts, and Paul's character was dropped entirely, and meanwhile Artie had a big fat role with a memorable death scene (spoiler, sorry). So Paul went back to NYC and sulked, and wrote this beauty, one of my favorite songs they ever recorded. "Tom" was a reference to their early recording career as Tom and Jerry.

    • @oppothumbs1
      @oppothumbs1 Před 2 lety +3

God is an imaginary being who if real is causing our pain. God's malevolence and vengeance is on display in the good books. Ever really read the entire bible? “The gods we’ve made are exactly the gods you’d expect to be made by a species that is about half a chromosome away from the chimpanzee.” - Christopher Hitchens
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobia, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. In the New Testament he gets worse.
Also have you read the bible? Imaginary God was a vindictive as hell. And Jesus is more punishing than bastardy god. He believed and liked the idea of eternal punishment or never spoke out against it. Infinite torture for those who try but can't believe in fairy tales. His criteria for getting into heaven is contemptible, disgusting - Believe in me; that’s all it takes. A close reading of the Old Testament is filled with horrendous lessons on how to treat people.

So a guy named Elijah was traveling to Bethel when a bunch of kids popped up and made fun of him for being bald. That had to suck, and you can't blame Elijah for being pissed and cursing them to God. But God had Elijah's back, by which I mean he sent two bears to maul 42 of these kids to death. For making fun of a bald dude. I have to think Elijah was looking for something along the lines of a spanking, or maybe the poetic justice of having the kids go bald, but nope, God went straight for the bear murder. But on the plus side, that pile of 40+ children's corpses never made fun of anybody again. Thank God in all of his mercy. (4 Kings 2:23-24)

I going to try to make this shorter cause I've got something to do on a Friday. Woo hoo! 1970, the first year of arguable the best decade of music and the year the Beatles broke up. No Stones album this year. I originally had Layla on the list, but discovered the single version which doesn't have the piano coda wasn't released till 71 so I'll save it for that (if it will even make the list in such a LOADED year).
    Singles:
*1. Let it Be (1) - The Beatles * - Song of the year. Beautiful. Unlike Jason, I prefer the single version mainly for the solo. How Paul could make such pretty music with the Beatles without making it sappy or wimpy is so impressive. His solo career? Not so much.
*2. Have You Ever Seen the Rain (4) - CCR* - I feel like I should like the other Rain song from CCR this year but this is my favorite CCR song. I love how John Fogerty sings "I wanna know" and how on the final chorus the crash of the cymbal on every beat (a small thing but I love it.)
*3. I'll Be There (6) - Jackson 5* - This is Michael's finest vocal with the Jackson 5, pure magic to my ears. Why anybody else is allowed to sing lead (looking at you Jermaine), I can't fathom.
*4. Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) (8) - John Lennon - Apparently released a mere 10 days after being written. The verses are fine, but what really "shines" here is that fantastic chorus with a great shouting vocal from John.
*5. Paranoid (9) - Black Sabbath* - This is one of those songs that I distinctly remember the first time I "noticed" the song (I had probably heard it before but never noticed it). Late 80s, my sister was watching Headbanger's Ball on MTV, and they played a live Ozzy video of "Paranoid" I think from the early 80s. I remember Ozzy was shirtless, and wearing some hideous pants, moving slowly like somebody in their 60s. The song blew me away though. I remember telling my sister I loved that "Ozzy" song, before telling me that's a famous Black Sabbath song. I didn't know who Black Sabbath was and she explained that Ozzy used to be in that band.
    Others:
*1. Working Class Hero (2) - John Lennon* - I was probably more into this song as an actual socialist back in college, than I am nowadays, but I do still think this is has fantastic lyrics and angry vocal from John against a stark acoustic production.
*2. Why Does Love Have to Be So Sad? (3) - Derek and the Dominos* - probably my all time favorite dual guitar attack ever. I particularly love the playing between the end of the first chorus to the second verse. Just wow. That may be the most impressive but at the end some of the slower guitar work is still impressive. At 4:00 there is small understated guitar fill, that I think just sounds amazing.
*3. And It Stoned Me (5) - Van Morrison* - I think Van gives a masterclass soulful performance on this one. Really powerful stuff.
*4. Into The Mystic (7) - Van Morrison* A better song, with beautiful lyrics and imagery, but I think Van's more laid back vocal isn't quite as powerful.
*5. Get Up (I Feel like Being a) Sex Machine - James Brown* - My second favorite James Brown song after 1958s Try Me. A super funky jam that makes me want to get up and move. Feels so tossed off, yet at the same time the groove is good and insistent.
Honorable Mentions: 11. Caravan - Van Morrison 12. Memo From Turner - Mick Jagger 13. Lookin Out My Back Door - CCR 14. Sweet Jane - Velvet Underground 15. Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney (my favorite Paul solo song).
Well, like I said, I gotta run. Keep up the good work guys. Looking very much forward to 1971.

1970 is by a pretty crushing margin my least favorite year for music from 1965-1973. Each of the other 8 years beat the living turd out of it. With the caveat that I need to give "Child in Time" another listen, my list:
    10. The Velvet Underground - "Rock and Roll" - The rave-up at the end seals it for me, and this beats out "Sweet Jane" due to Doug Yule's horrendously yelping """harmony""" """vocals""" on the studio version.
    9. Neil Young - "Birds" - One of the few Neil Young songs that move me **towards** crying. So pretty, so moving.
    8. The Stooges - "1970" - We all need a little bit of aggressive chaos in our lives.
    7. Led Zeppelin - "That's the Way" - This beautiful acoustic track is one of the best things they ever did. Great call, Kram.
    6. Simon & Garfunkel - "Bridge over Troubled Water" - This masterpiece has actually become underrated in recent years.
    5. Paul McCartney - "Maybe I'm Amazed" - My single favorite track from his solo career, but obvious shenanigan on his part than it wasn't a Beatles song.
    4. Van Morrison - "Caravan" - A great celebration of music, powerful and enthusiastic.
    3. Simon & Garfunkel - "The Only Living Boy in New York" - Awww, Paul misses Art. Pretty nice to have a song like this written about you when you're about to be dumped as a musical partner. Beautiful harmonies, passionate.
    2. The Beatles - "Across the Universe" - I love this track. Underrated among John numbers.
    1. The Beatles - "Let It Be" - Another Beatles single that has also become critically underrated.
Honorable mentions (shut up, Joe): The Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane," King Crimson's "Lizard," Van Morrison's "Domino," Van Der Graaf Generator's "Darkness 11/11," Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" and "Iron Man," Elton John's "Come Down in Time," The Jackson 5's "I'll Be There," David Bowie's "Width of a Circle," George Harrison's "What Is Life," Van Morrison's "Moondance," Simon & Garfunkel's "The Boxer," Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," The Carpenters' "Close to You," and the Beach Boy's "Our Sweet Love."

    Those are some great choices.
Of course Clapton is a great guitarist, has a good singing voice and his ballad "Wonderful Tonight" gets its due, but he deserves more credit for his other ballads such as "Peaches and Diesel", "Hello Old Friend", "Please Be with Me", "Let It Grow" (which I think he wrote), "We're All the Way" and "Easy Now" (mentioned below) and probably some others I haven't heard.

Pretty much just peak pop/rock days.
    BILLBOARD
    1. *Lola by The Kinks #9* (The subject matter could have aged far worse all things considered. Musically, it has hooks for days. Rocks hard and irresisibly catchy all at the same time.)
    2. *Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel #1* (Stately and beautiful. Get the absolute most out of Garfunkel's voice. Feels like a shoe-in for a modern Classic American Songbook.)
    3. *My Sweet Lord by George Harrison #1* (A pop/rock classic, lawsuit notwithstanding.)
    4. *Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin #16* (Heavy and speedy as hell. The recurring scream is up there among iconic rock cries. Shout out to the great B-side Hey Hey What Can I Do as well.)
    5. *Paranoid by Black Sabbath #61* (Obviously a luminary artist, but what stands out on this track is how punky and economical it is. Much like Immigrant Song, I love when rock is short and sweet.)
    WILDCARD
    1. WINNER: *Layla by Derek and the Dominos* [#51 1971, #10 1972] (An incredible rock song in its own right, but the star is the gorgeous 4-minute coda.)
    2. *All I Wanna Do by The Beach Boys* (Dream pop/shoegaze elements way before their time.)
    3. *Sweet Jane by The Velvet Underground* (Classic riff and what feels like early glam rock. The opening always get me.)
    4. *Forever by The Beach Boys* (Super pretty ballad from Dennis Wilson.)
    5. *Tell Me Why by Neil Young* (One of Neil's very best. Could have picked a number of these folk pop tracks off of After the Gold Rush.)
    Top 10 HM:
Lady by Dennis Wilson & Rumbo
Don't Let It Bring You Down by Neil Young
    Strangers by The Kinks
    WORST:
Julie, Do Ya Love Me by Bobby Sherman #5 (Super bland in every way. Everything Is Beautiful by Ray Stevens [#1] and Gimme Dat Ding by The Pipkins [#9] are runners-up.)

As far as the piano part being stolen there is a story that Rita Coolidge who could play piano helped her boyfriend, Jim Gordon, who couldn't play the piano well, to write it.

"I'll Never Fall in Love Again" - Dionne Warwick

"Big Yellow Tax" - Joni Mitchell (unusual mix of fun/upbeat song with profound lyrics)
"If I Were Your Woman" - Gladys Knight and The Pips

Moon in June - I did not list it because Soft Machine Third was one of my top 5 albums of that year. There is a great version of it recorded at the BBC - it first appeared on the Triple Echo compilation but has since been released on the CDs that contain their BBC performances (a must have, and I say this even if normally am not a big fan of archival releases), Robert Wyatt improvises a lot of new lyrics on the occasion and pays tribute to all the Canterbury companions.
Let it Rain - this is my Clapton choice of the year as well.
Stephen Stills - I have another song, but really like his debut album.
TYA - I would go for a Cricklewood Green track instead, but your choice is another good song.
Taste - I think I am Rory's biggest fan here on the channel, always happy when I see him mentioned.
Jethro Tull - Benefit was my #3 AOTY and is my #2 in their discography - you can take any song from the album to make me agree.
Santana - if we take the video and the comments then every Abraxas song has been mentioned...

@@TastesLikeMusic Apparently promo copies were sent out in 1970 and some artwork issues delayed the full release. You're right about it being 1971, but some sources will list it as 1970 for that reason (Rateyourmusic, for instance). That's probably where the confusion comes from.

@@TimeToGetAlone The CD booklet of the re-issue I have (from Island records) adds even more to this confusion as it says "Record first published in 1970" but gives official release date 1971 (here it says 14/1/71) for ILPS 9134.
