  • Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 1968!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

While 1967 is the greatest year for albums, I gotta say that 1968 is the greatest year for songs. I stopped the HM list at 25 five-star songs, but honestly could have added more. Yeah - that kinda year. More Donovan than Beatles on the top 10. :)

The reason I did not list Astral Weeks in my list is that the album was my 1968 AOTY and I skip songs from albums that I listed already in that context (otherwise I would end up listing all the Stones and Dylan songs from the 60s...)

    • @frangarcia7774
      @frangarcia7774 Před 3 lety +1

Yes, I see your point. I can understand thinking it's a a bit pointless to list Simpathy for the Devil, While My Guitar Gently Weeps or All Along the Watchtower. Songs that are widely considered as classics and known by everyone following these videos. But you see some surprises, like music fans not liking The Doors or I Heard Through the Grapevine or some Beatles or Van's songs... So we can't always assume everyone likes them.
I also try to to find some Wildcards which aren't obvious, particularly looking into other countries music: Brazil, France, Jamaica regularly make it and I will include other countries as we move forward

Lots of great stuff this year. There are so many that just missed, I had a playlist of 50 songs that I considered so clearly lots of great ones got left behind. Even picking a number 1 was tough because a lot of my top 10 could be my number 1 depending on my mood.
    Hot 100:
    - Aretha Franklin - Ain't No Way
    - The Zombies - Time of the Season
    - Canned Heat - On the Road Again
    - The Byrds - You Ain't Going Nowhere (Hickory Wind just missed - I debated between the two and even debated breaking my one song per artist rule and putting both)
    - Cream - White Room
    Wildcard:
    - The Beatles - Happiness is a Warm Gun
    - Pink Floyd - Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
    - Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
    - The Rolling Stones - No Expectations
Worst: "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. Those lyrics are just so so bad. One minute she's crashing cars and crying for no reason and then suddenly she's dead. I find it hard to believe it was a #1 hit.
My #1: "Tears of Rage" by The Band. I have listened to it so many times the last week, along with a lot of these songs and every time it just gets me. So good.
I always look forward to Fridays and seeing everyone's lists! :)

UPDATE - I inexplicably missed Sympathy For The Devil in my sweep for songs in 1968 the first time around. So, I inserted it in its place (#4 in the wildcards list) and bumped everything below it down one.
What a year, and I thought '67 was rough. I can't believe the songs I had to leave out of my 'top 10'. And because I am observing U.S. release dates generally, had to fit two Hendrix albums this year. Was tempting to limit songs by artists to get more artists in but in the end stuck with the favorite songs, period.
    Hot 100 -
    1. (Sittin' On The) Dock Of The Bay - Otis Redding (#1 song of the year)
    2. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix Experience
    3. Crosstown Traffic - Jimi Hendrix Experience
    4. Revolution - The Beatles
    5. Jumpin' Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones
    Wildcards -
    1. Piece Of My Heart - Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin (this song did chart but I'm going with the album version, I gotta have the " 'chilafit' makes you feel good" line, AKA 'child, if it')
    2. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix Experience

    20. Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf
    21. Crimson And Clover - Tommy James and the Shondells (going with the album version, single version cuts out a whole lot of great guitar work)

1968, a tumultuous year, by pretty much any standard (though 2020 was worse), in fact I remember back in the late 90’s on the American History AP exam, an essay choice was to talk about how and why 1968 was a “crazy fucking year” (Well at least that’s what I remember it saying). Musically it’s getting harder and harder to stick to 10 (That’s why we have honorable mentions).
    *Singles*
*1. Hey Jude (1) - The Beatles -* song of the year, and my number one song of all time. Why? I’m not even really sure it’s been my fave for 27 years, and it’s just so pleasant to my ears. I, unlike Joe think there are a few too many “nah”s.
*2. Jumpin Jack Flash (2) - Rolling Stones -* The Stones finally get a producer who can produce them properly (Jimmy Miller), who doesn’t get enough credit for the Stones great period, while Mick Taylor gets too much credit. The first release with Miller is this one. First off the opening riff is amazing. Note wise nothing spectacular, but that tone is PHAT (do the kids still say that?) I also love the sound of the slap of snare, the organ, the great vocal from Jagger. Just amazing.
*3. Sittin on the Dock of the Bay (7) - Otis Redding* - Recorded just days before he died, that no doubt helps it stature as a great song. It’s so serene, so relaxed with with the usual great vocal performance from Redding.
*4. The Weight (8) - The Band* - fantastic of course, but the harmonies is really what makes this amazing.
*5. Son of a Preacher Man (9) - Dusty Springfield* - a Brit doing southern soul and doing it fantastically.
    Others:
*1. Sympathy For the Devil (3) - Rolling Stones* - One of the most coolest sounding songs ever. One of the most unique too (Is there anything else like it?). The lyrics bring up dark moments in history the music, the music brings forth images of a ritual around a fire. Menacing sounding and Just amazing.
*2. *Madame George (4) - Van Morrison* - Astral Weeks was one of the most disappointing albums ever on first listen (I like it more now but still not a big fan) but the one song that stood out to me even initially was Madame George. At over 9 minutes it’s too long, but Van gives a fantastic performance. And that bass! I’m not a bass player, in fact I honestly rarely notice the bass, but this bass is so amazing and sounds so off-kilter.
*3. You Left the Water Running (5) - Maurice and Mac* - Probably the most obscure artists that I’ll have on one of these lists (a whopping 1700 monthly listeners on Spotify). This Sam and Dave knockoff is great, with impassioned vocal, great production (recorded at Fame Studios with the Swampers), but sadly didn’t make the Hot 100.
*4. Blackbird (6) - The Beatles* - Paul again coming up with just seemingly tossing off another masterpiece. Simple, beautiful, and fantastic metaphorical lyric.
*5. Crossroads (10) - Cream*- If I remember correctly Kram and Jason are not Clapton fans, but I think Eric’s work here is great. Sure he’s not better than Jimi and I think he would do better work soon as Derek and the Dominoes, but this live version of Crossroads is very intense. Though Eric sucks as a singer.
    *Honorable mentions:*
    11. Days - Kinks 12. Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf 13. Think - Aretha Franklin 14. Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing- Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell 15. Quin the Eskimo - Manfred Mann
Thanks again to anybody who read all my ramblings.
And as always guys great video.

For the first time since we started this, I'm dropping in some wild cards, since there were a couple of tunes I wanted to list that didn't chart, but instead of a seperate list, I'll just note them within my top 10.
    1. Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones (WC). I don't think Mick gets enough recognition as a lyricist, and between this and #6, he's really writing some terrific stuff. Everything about this song is excellent, definitely one of the all time greats.
    2. Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan (5). For a long time it was rumored that John Paul Jones, Jimi Page, and John Bonham all play on this track, but it seems like it's probably only JPJ. It makes sense though. With it's mystical vibe, Eastern influences and raging guitar and drums, it's the best Led Zeppelin song not recorded by Led Zeppelin.
    3. Hey Jude - The Beatles (1). Paul finally gave up the ornate granny music long enough to write this uplifting piano anthem.
    4. Red Red Wine - Neil Diamond (1). UB40 turned this into a white guy reggae song, but the original is a pure sad bastard classic with Neil drowning his sorrows in a bottle of booze.
    5. This Will Be Our Year - The Zombies (WC). This was the song my wife and I danced to at our wedding. Mainly because it's short and neither of us are dancers, but it's also a really great song.
    6. Street Fighting Man - The Rolling Stones (48). I always dug this song. It's an underrated counterculture protest song, and I like that it uses a bunch of Indian instrumentation but doesn't sound overtly Indian.
    7. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (20). A great example of how to do a cover song. Hendrix reinvented the Dylan song to the point where Dylan doesn't even consider it his song anymore.
    8. Crimson & Clover - Tommy James & The Shondells (1). Maybe the best vibe of any song. That tremolo guitar is so trippy and it's just the coolest, most mellow song.
    9. Mighty Quinn - Manfred Mann (82). Much like Hendrix, Manfred Mann radically reinvented this Dylan/Band song and turned it into a great pop classic.
    10. Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition is In) (5)- Kenny Rogers & The First Edition. Before Sturgil Simpson was a twinkle in his momma's eye, Kenny Rogers recorded this fuzzed out psychedelic country classic featuring backwards guitars and lyrics that sound like Kenny just ate an entire sheet of LSD.
Went with Jason on the vote. "Happiness is a Warm Gun" didn't make my list, but it's definitely my favorite of the three by a country mile.

1968 was the only year from 1965-69 The Beatles didn’t get my album of the year, but they may have my song of the year with “Hey Jude”. It sounded the best to me when I listened to their entire catalog consecutively, with the coda acting like a huge party near the end of it, so I call it my favorite of theirs. Other contenders include my personal favorite Hendrix song “1983”, “Do You Remember Walter?” and the title track from Village Green Preservation Society by The Kinks (my album of the year), “Sympathy for the Devil” by the Stones (“Street Fighting Man” and “Salt of the Earth” are up there too though), “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” from Otis Redding, “Goin’ Back” from The Byrds, “Care of Cell 44” from The Zombies, “America” from Simon & Garfunkel, “Kites Are Fun” by The Free Design and probably a few others from the White Album (“Martha My Dear” is my current favorite, but anything from the track 7-13 stretch, the best 7 song run The Beatles ever did in my mind, would do).

Think this is the best year yet. Really seems like we are moving from fads (good as they were getting) to stuff of considerable substance.
Here are my 5 favorites from the 1968 Listography playlist:
    1. Marvin Gaye- I Heard It Through the Grapevine [I think I would consider this among the greatest vocal performances of all time, and certainly one of the best orchestral arrangements ever too, a killer funky grimey song]
    2. The Beatles- Dear Prudence [the tenderness is overwhelming]
    3. Jimi Hendrix Experience- Voodoo Child (Slight Return) [probably my favorite guitar performance on a track ever]
    4. The Beatles- Hey Jude [realizing when looking on the two Paul songs that made my list, this and "Penny Lane", that Paul is more a founder of Britpop than I've ever been aware of]
    5. Tommy James & the Shondells- Crimson & Clover [HUGE THANKS for this one. Never heard it! Wow, this is a dangerous song, find myself getting a bit weak in the knees listening to this...]

1968 was an exceptional year for music in general, not just for the major rock acts. Having to only choose 10 songs certainly does not get any easier:

Worst song: Congratulations - Cliff Richard
(I dislike almost every song of his I have ever heard. To me, he is everything that Kramzer accused Elvis of being but with far less talent - at least Elvis had a great voice!)
Song of the Year: Hey Jude - The Beatles
(Joe is spot on about this song - in anyone else’s hands, the na-na-na-na singalong might sound corny but the Beatles turn it into the most memorable long fade out ever recorded. For me, and millions of others, this was their finest moment)

Pretty much continues right where '67 left off. More incredible pop songs and the boundaries of rock being tested. The psychedelic sound still seems all over the place, albeit with a number of the big artists moving on into other territory.
    BILLBOARD
    1. *Jumpin' Jack Flash by The Rolling Stones #3* (Feels like the last touch of mid-60s Stones greatness. It's not about the riff or the attitude, but the production touches like the shimmering guitar in the chorus.)
    2. *All Along the Watchtower by The Jimi Hendrix Experience #20* (Epitomizes the late 60s era and one of the best cover songs ever. Ending feels like a precursor to Zeppelin.)
    3. *Crimson and Clover by Tommy James & the Shondells #1* (Just a super groovy chart-topper. Both the main riff and the ending vocal loops are infectious hooks.)
    4. *Revolution by The Beatles #12* (My favorite of their heavier rock tracks. Catchy and with the guitar sounding gritty in the best way.)
    5. *Everyday People by Sly & the Family Stone #1* (Amazing, feel-good pop soul.)
    WILDCARD
    1. WINNER: *Hung Up on a Dream by The Zombies* (I love everything about this deep cut. Beautiful piano lines, prominent mellotron, dreamy vocals, the lovely choral harmonies at the end. If you like psychedelic/baroque pop, highly recommended.)
    2. *Days by The Kinks* (Pretty much a perfect pop/rock song. Almost plays like a singalong sea shanty in the verses, and it all works.)
    3. *Time of the Season by The Zombies* [#3, 1969] (Another defining song of the 60s sound. Seductive and with some all-time great organ sections for a pop song.)
    4. *America by Simon & Garfunkel* [#97, 1972] (One of their best compositions perfectly arranged and performed. Wouldn't change a thing!)
    5. *Martha My Dear by The Beatles* (The most distinguished sounding of Paul's "granny tunes". Sparser verses yielding to an almost rocking sound. Hooks all over the place in a lean runtime. Love it!)
    Top 10 HM:
To Claudia on Thursday by The Millennium
Busy Doin' Nothin' by The Beach Boys
    WORST:
Honey by Bobby Goldsboro (Not as many egregiously bad hit songs as previous years, but this pretty mawkish and boring song somehow was the third top selling single of the year.)

Another week, another great listography episode.
    Hot 100
    1. The Weight - The brotherhood of The Band is so infectious and this is one of their prime masterpieces. Underrated piano work on it too.
    2. Shoo Be Doo Be Doo Da Day - Not the best title but a great song. I love Stevie's energy from this period.
    3. Revolution - Some a John's best lyrics and vocals
    4. Hey Jude
    5. Chain of Fools - Cause its badass
    Deep Cuts
    2. The Loner - This track has killer production and Neil's sick guitar.
    3. I Said Goodbye to Me - Jason is right, Ariel Ballet by Nilsson is basically perfect and I could've picked anything from it but this one gets me with its sprawling melody.
    4. Goodnight - Just so PRETTY. Ringo is so endearing on this track and it just lifts me up like not much else.
    5. Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone - Just listen to that damn bass and guitar. One of Dusty's most rockin tracks
    WINNER
We Can Talk - The Band
    - This song rides such a fine line between being very corny and very awesome. There are three brothers, each voiced by the three singers of the Band and they are arguing on how to fix father's clock, but it works so well. The banging jangly piano with that slick organ work, and the swinging groove is awesome. All three of their voices are just coming in and out, coming together, picking each other up, and then it all collides with the chorus. Then ya got that weird Manuel section in the middle that leads to one of the group's best lines "I'd rather be burned in Canada than freeze here in the South." To me, this is the definitive band song in terms of the group's brotherhood spirit. The magic of those three voices, Robbie's guitar and Garth's organ is too good. Music From Big Pink is a damn masterpiece.

1968 is such a rich year-I'm going to list my top 5 outsider songs:
    1. "Plastic Palace People" Scott Walker
    2. "Cecil Rons" Caravan
    3. "How Do They Know?" Giles, Giles, & Fripp
    4. "Some Velvet Morning" Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra
    5. "Beatle Bones & Smokin' Stones" Captain Beefheart

Caravan - Pye Hastings that is - was great at writing catchy songs for a progressive context. I like their debut but my choice would be Place of my Own. Their second album however is where Canterbury progressive rock came to life. Strictly Personal is one of the Captain's lesser known albums that deserves more attention. But...Giles, Giles & Fripp really only leads to the question of how they could morph into King Crimson within a year - magic?

I would have picked "This Will Be Our Year" from Odyssey and Oracle as my personal fave, but agree that well rounded albums like that are hard to pick a song on, and Time of the Season, though being their biggest hit is a bit overplayed to still hit those pleasure centers. And kinda a deep cut choice, but I just LOVE "Martha My Dear" from the White Album, or "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey". Agreed on "Street Fighting Man", rules so hard. OH, finally I'll say I was so glad "Fire" by Arthur Brown made Joe's list, when I heard that song for the first time around 20 years old I because so obsessed with its awesome and hilarious over the top-ness. The video made for it is amazing too. Off to listen to "Witchita Lineman" since I'm embarrassed to say I can't for the life of me remember what it sounds like... And I've now listened to it, and yep, amazing! Such an incredible production and Joe said it right, Cosmic Country! Very cool...

I have been a fanatical Beatles fan since I saw them on Ed Sullivan in Feb 1964 so anything Beatles would most likely be my first choice. When I heard Wichita Lineman as a top song, it reminded me of how much I liked several of Glen Campbell's hits many years ago. I have not heard the song Wichita Lineman for decades. I decided to listen to it on CZcams and then I shocked myself by picking that song (such a beautiful one) over the Beatles "Warm Gun" song.

I like '67 better than '68 but it's splitting hairs:
    Top 100
    5. Revolution - Beatles
    4. Suzy Q - CCR
    3. All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
    2. Chain of Fools - Aretha Franklin
    1. Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding (don't know how that was missed by y'all)
    Wild cards
    5. Time Has Come Today - Chambers Brothers
    4. Sky Pilot - Eric Burdon and the Animals
    3. Sweet Thing - Van Morrison
    2. The Weight - The Band
    1. Dear Prudence - Beatles
Worst: Totally down with Kram's pick, that song weirded me out when I was like 11. But I also chose Joe's pick, so "Simon Says" it is.
Best: Dock of the Bay narrowly over Prudence

Out of the Song of the Year picks I would have to go with Kramzer's. "Tears of Rage" is in my Top 10 favorite Band songs and contains one of my favorite vocals-lyrics matches ever (Richard Manuel and Bob Dylan at their best).
"Wichita Lineman" is a classy track. The Wrecking Crew backing up one of their own.
"Happiness is a Warm Gun" is a good song, but it's not even close to my favorite Beatles track of '68. Too many good ones to choose from.
Love hearing the opinions of all three, even if I vehemently disagree on occasion (l think it's easier to take this from a group of friends talking than a music journalist pontificating). That being said, I was shocked to hear that Jason and Kram didn't care for "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". I kinda get why some commenters have dubbed Joe the "man of the people".
Anyway, love these videos. You guys keep up the good work.

I think my picks will be be harder for every year, so much great music during the second part of the sixties and the first half of the seventies, my favourite period of music. When it comes to 1968 I am with Joe for the best song
    1. Glenn Campbell - Wichita Lineman, maybe the best ballad ever.
    2. Glenn Campbell - Gentle on my mind (I think it was originally released in 1967 but it was re-issued in 1968 so i go for it here).
    3. Jimi Hendrix - All along the watchtower (I love the diversity of the populär music then, it was natural to listen to different genres)
    4. Steppenwolf - Born to be wild
    5. The Band - The weight
    6. The Byrds - You aint going nowhere
    7. Turtles - Elenor
    8. Bee Gees - I ve gotta get a mesage to you
    9. Otis Redding - Sitting on the dock of the bay
    10. Nilsson - Everybodys talking
Have to stop there, but the worst song must be Yummy yummy with Ohio Express.

Doing a top 12 this year in order to include my two biggest honorable mentions:
    12. The Delfonics - "La La Means I Love You"
    11. The Zombies - "Hung Up on a Dream" - This is the one that stands out to me, personally, on Odessey.
    10. Cream - "Crossroads" - One of my three or so favorite guitar solos of all time.
    9. The Kinks - "Days"
    8. The Moody Blues - "Legend of a Mind" - Yes, it's cheesy, but I love it to death. All is forgiven, Roy. Pinder making great use of the pitch shifter on the mellotron.
    7. Simon & Garfunkel - "America" - beautifully majestic.
    6. The Rolling Stones - "No Expectations" - Brian Jones played that slide guitar, which is just incredible. Perhaps the most emotionally-engaged Stones track ever.
    5. The Beatles - "Hey Jude" - Damn straight there aren't too many "nah's." Some people just miss the point.
    4. Jimi Hendrix - "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" - Such a huge guitar sound. Sounds like it was recorded much later in rock history than it was.
    3. Deep Purple - "Hush" - I get that this is not *the* version of Deep Purple, but this is a tremendous groove with fire-breathing guitar fills. Love that "Day in the Life"-quoting coda.
    2. The Rolling Stones - "Street Fighting Man" - My single favorite Stones track. Catchy and bracing. Love the "What can a poor boy do" hook, which Rod Stewart of course completely botched. Love the tamboura, the piano, the metronomic high-hat and doom-filled tom hits (reportedly on a toy drum kit), the *electric* rhythm guitar sound, and of course Keith's acoustic thrash. The psychedelia was still holding on for this arrangement, to great effect, but in a way that was gritty, and reflective of the Beggars Banquet album cover. Beggars might be a little spotty, but its highs put it in the running for the best Stones album imho.
    1. Van Morrison - "Ballerina" - To me, this is absolutely the standout from the eternal Astral Weeks. Gives me goosebumps from beginning to end. So emotionally committed, so much tension and release.
