    3. ABBA - The Album
    4. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
    5. Jethro Tull - Songs From the Wood
    HM (alpha order):
    David Bowie - Low
    Cheap Trick - In Color
    Billy Joel - The Stranger
Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
Very close here between the top two. You don't see many mentions for Bryan Ferry. This is such an incredible album. Perfection - gotta love that 70's sax. For me the great album years start in 1977 and continue on through the end of the 90's. Oddly, as a Cheap Trick fan, I never really got into their debut. much prefer In Color and most of their albums through the early 80's. The Album is my favorite one from ABBA. Even after most of songs have been plundered by the Momma Mia movie there are still amazing deep cuts such as "Eagle" and "Hole in Your Soul". The Sex Pistols album was on my top 5 last time, but I must have been in a more "mellow 70's" mood for this last listen. Fantastic series, guys. keep it up.

Hard to exclude some estimable efforts to narrow down my selections to five, but I think all my choices are strong contenders for some of the best albums to be released in this important transitional year (all listed alphabetically by title):
--'Bat Out of Hell' by Meat Loaf (the best LP on which the late Mr. Loaf worked, a classic medley of adolescent angst, cartoonish and poignant all at the same time)
--'Point of Know Return' by Kansas (one of the band's best, containing my favorite song of theirs, "Dust in the Wind")
--'Rumours' by Fleetwood Mac (THE canonical Fleetwood Mac LP, regardless of various lineup changes over the years)
--'Songs from the Wood' by Jethro Tull (evocative offering from a great progressive band, relatively overlooked in their catalog)
--'The Stranger' by Billy Joel (the first album by Joel I ever heard, and one of his best, perhaps THE best, while showcasing my favorite Joel song, "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant")

Sill catching up on your lists and you picked most of the best albums of the year already. The top 5 of those that were missed:
    1. The Stranger - Billy Joel (his songcraft is so effortless he is underrated as an artist. This album is full of pop classics)
    2. Foreigner - Foreigner (their best album, another album that highlights a change in direction in music overall that probably started 1-2 years before)
    3. The Point of Know Return - Kansas (American prog at its best and rockiest)
    4. The Album - Abba (another underrated band artistically due to their commercial success)
    5. I Robot - Alan Parsons Project (aural perfection - with this and Aja this year I don't think studio recording has ever sounded as crisp and clear)
Could have mentioned lots more. 21 albums from 1977 in my top 500.

ah,'77-The year of Television's-"Marquee Moon"one of the most uniquely pleasurable albums Ive ever heard. Television were branded "New York Punk"(they were the first band to play CBGB),but they were anything but. Lengthy tracks, twin lead guitarists with unique, complementary playing styles ,Ive heard them described as a strange cross between King Crimson and the Quicksilver Messenger Service. Its my favorite of this tremendous year. Pink Floyd "Animals" and the greatest English punk album ever-Wire "Pink Flag"round out my top 3. Also love "Before& After Science"by Eno ,The Clash and sex Pistols debuts,The Idiot-Iggy Pop,and even a Jethro Tull return to form in "Songs from the wood". A flagship year for rock albums for sure!

The thunderstorm called punk cleared the stale air of the big business scene in the mid 70s and nothing stayed as it had been before. Although there were the big million selling albums, the audience now was so large that even those did not represent the majority of listeners. Many people were no longer interested in chart success or radio exposure but listening to the thousands of other artists that created new sounds. Singles once again became nearly as important as albums, independent labels and radio stations as well as magazines or concert venues spread everywhere...yes, some people went to the disco and missed it all...
Honorable mentions include Talking Heads 77, Ramones Leave Home + Rocket to Russia, Little Feat Time Loves a Hero, Wire Pink Flag, Jerry Jeff Walker Contrary to Ordinary, Stranglers No More Heroes, Phil Manzanera's 801 Listen Now, Joe Ely's debut, Garland Jeffrey Ghost Writer, Steve Forbert's debut called Alive On Arrival and Eno's Before and After Science.
    5. David Bowie - Low (even if not recorded in Berlin it marks the beginning and peak of what might be his most important/influential period and a blueprint for much of the relevant music to follow up to this day)
    4. Clash - UK debut (the band that proved that punk was far more than 3 chords screamed out in anger.)
    3. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors (the end of the incredible run of albums they released since the debut, no bad track on any of them. They were ready to dethrone whoever you might have thought was the best rock band at that time...if not...)
    2. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks (Until this day, when I think I need to refresh my energy to prepare for some change that is overdue, this is where I go to. John Lydon was and is the most intelligent bastard in music and these songs are relevant still - Holidays in the Sun, Pretty Vacant, Bodies, God Save the Queen - she is still there - and of course Anarchy for the UK.)
    1. Television - Marquee Moon (they were refining and polishing this set night after night at the legendary CBGB's and were the first band to play there but the last to sign a record contract and release an album. They were too intense to last for more than one album - their second hardly counts - but Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd both released remarkable albums later, some of them may appear on coming lists.)
