    I just want to keep moving. I also find that foot turnover is impt. especially if I am feeling tired and dead legs, just keep taking quick steps, you will get there.

    Great advice! I do basicly what you suggest. I have a target pace that I know I can maintain comfortably for the first 6 1/2 miles. I try and keep as close to it for the last 6 1/12 and if I do I'm thrilled. But often the Texas heat and sun team up to make that unwise to shoot for so I slow it down a bit. Either way my goal is to run and feel satisfied at the end knowing I did my best, smartest run.

    at the start its not energy its adrenaline and it will fucking cost you alot of time if you use it, your not a pro... you will suffer alot in the last miles you want to preserve that energy. Go slow even 20-30 seconds slower then your marathon pace. you can make up the "damage" after the first 10k. But if you do the opposite and push the first 10k just becouse the adrenaline was rushing trough your veins you will realise very fast how shitty your feel just around half marathon point...

    2:10 "Pacers are Dead to me". Sounds like Al Capone. LOL! With regard to water stations, if you train without hydrating a lot, don't look at the stations as "Free Water" and feel compelled to hydrate. Not only will it slow you down, but it will also throw off your body's efficiency. My first half marathon I made that mistake, stopping literally at every station because I was afraid I'd dehydrate. It messed up my pace, efficiency, and race. By the next one, instead of hydrating 6 times, I did it once... at the end. Almost didn't need that either, but did so anyways. Everyone is different, but if you can run 4 - 5 miles without hydrating while training, don't assume you can't do that during a race.
    6:20 Banking your time also kills your stamina! Your body does not recover easily. Burn even. Don't Burn Out! Starting slow in certain races is inevitable because of the crowd. It is difficult until about the first half mile to run a real pace because of the crush of people.

    Follow your heart. Know your target hr for each stage of the race. It will increase gradually depending on several factors throughout the race. If you don't let it get too high too soon you will finish stronger and feel much better post race.

    Thanks for the advice! I have my first 5k at tough mudder in 2 weeks. Kinda nervous since I havent ran since 2012. I've been training since August. This was a surprise race kinda. But since I already bought the tickets i can't back out now.

    I have anxiety that I think interfere with my pacing in a half marathon
    Any suggestions to alleviate this? It seems worst in crowd situations waiting at
    The start line!

  • @voltaire372
    @voltaire372 Před 7 lety +2

    Honestly, I've followed pacers who go 95 minute pace, I just don't stick right next to them all the time... And if I lose them at a water station I know I have to up my pace by a bit to stay on track time wise...

    Most runners use a fitbit, apple watch, or garmin to achieve other goals before race day.

  • @FTStratLP
    @FTStratLP Před 7 lety +10

    Not true, what you say about pacers. They are using GPSs and are running exactly the same pace throughout the race and know the racing line (very important, otherwise you might end up running a few hundred extra meters at a HM or even an extra km or more at a Marathon). What of course can interfere are bulks of slower runners blocking the racing line.

    • @randallanimal
      @randallanimal Před 6 lety

    Hey maury my goal for this half marathon is run a 1:29 time. how should I handle it? what's the advice?

    • @VIV292
      @VIV292 Před 7 lety

      Osasumwen Eweka depends what is your 10k pace at maximum effort > for 90 minute half marathon can you hold about 4 minute Ks on average> 40 minutes for 10 k

    • @osasumweneweka698
      @osasumweneweka698 Před 7 lety

      I believe I can hold 4 minute ks average. 10k is 6:51 seconds pace

    • @VIV292
      @VIV292 Před 7 lety

      Osasumwen Eweka IF you can work back your average down to 6;30 per mile over 10k you could get closer to your goal but you need to pace correctly from the start it takes patience and more importantly practice IF you do 10 mile tempo @6;30 pace would be a great start
