I started running at age 55, trained and done first half marathon. I decided to continue as I had only intended the one big run. I finished in 2hr 6 min.. A year and a half later later I decided to try a full marathon and upped my mileage. Only once did I run 20 miles before the marathon and I felt like I didn't have much left in me. Normal long runs were around 10 miles though I had done a few up to 15. The race itself was the Dundee Marathon and we ran alongside the half marathon runners. This perhaps threw me as I generally kept pace with my normal half marathon speed. Big mistake. I never knew anything about energy drinks and relied only on water. The first half of the race was around houses and so there were some people handing out jelly babies etc. The first half was up and down hills as well but I felt fine. When we passed the halfway point where most people dropped off for the half, I felt fine. In fact it was like you said, the body knows it is nowhere near the finish so is not ready for giving up. I felt strong and thought I would easily make 4:30. The rest of the race was flat, running into Dundee city by the Port and back. But then the weather started changing and the sun was out. I was sweating buckets and there was no one lining the route anymore and the distance between stewards was around 3 miles apart. I saw the leaders on their way back as I was getting cut adrift and those behind me which was not many, but even they were too far back to help me. After the turn back I barely saw anyone and just tried to keep going and somehow motivate myself but my strength was fading and at times I had to walk. I was a few hundred metres from the finish when I saw a guy catching up on me. I knew it was too far to sprint so I set myself a target to reach at a consistent pace before attempting a sprint. As I came to that point the other guy was on my shoulder but he didn't expect me to have a sudden burst of speed and I could hear him burst out laughing as I shot ahead. There were not many runners that year who did the whole marathon and I ended up 4th last in 5 hours 2 mins. And it is for this reason that I am going to put myself through torture again so I can try and get inside the 5 hours. But although I have been wracked with injuries, I have the advantage now of having been through it before and I will set myself a realistic pacing time. I am also going to run Boston UK, which is the flattest in UK (even though I generally don't like flat for the whole run. but it means I can try pace myself better. I am also deliberately waiting until after my 60th birthday to enter a new age bracket and show my sons you don't need to let age limit you. The main thing I think I am worried about this time is a strong wind as that can cause havoc when pacing.

I remember the end of my first half marathon, that I felt that there was no way I could do that again and double it. But then I remembered back to my first 5K which took me a solid 53 minutes( I know. I’m slow and it was hot) and I thought after that there was no way I could ever double a 5K distance. And each successive distance that I finished, I always felt like I couldn’t do the next step up. But I just did the training, and somehow it all comes together. Trust the process and listen to your body.

She says "it actually takes the body about 6 weeks to adapt to any behaviour you've been doing consistently". - Two things about that. 1. That depends on when and how that 'behaviour' has been introduced. If you're going from nothing at all to a dynamic transition in behaviour, sure, I agree (i.e. couch to 5 km in 90 days). But not if you've already established a strong base and then you enhance that behavior (i.e. you have a strong aerobic base and then you introduce anaerobic training). 2. In context of tapering, it's still a good idea to do some anaerobic sessions even into the last week to keep your body prepared for that 'spike' in heart rate on race day, but for sure, taper down the long runs because these will definitely make your legs heavy and tired and you won't be fresh or at your optimal best.

Again you talked about a worn out topic in a fresh new way that I could gain new insight from. I'm transitioning straight from half marathons to ultras, which is especially crazy because I've taken every nasty winter off running for decades. I've finally found a goal big and scary enough to get me out the door to train in the worst weather.

Glad I watched this! 1 wk away from the start of my taper. As much as I WANT to trust my training, I'm a few months short. Couch to 50k in 5 months, after 5 months off running. I was planning on cutting my mileage, but amping up my cross training- yoga, abs, pilates, body weight exercises. Guess I'll ease up a little! Better to be fresh and uninjured than to risk the alternative!

Kale and lululemon will get you through a marathon!" 😂 I stand corrected. This was by far the best fueling video I've seen, a great mix of examples and explanations, and it really helped me understand what I need and why. You've got serious brains to go with the beauty. Hi guys! Am planning my first ultra in april but am not sure what to eat during training and during the race. I run a lot so the mental part I don't see as a problem. Thing is, my stomach cannot handle too much sugar and gels etc (tried that on a marathon some years ago). These last few years I do most of my long runs on an empty stomach or with a vegateble-based sports drink called nitro ndure. Any suggestions on what to eat and drink while training and for the race itself, preferably not sugar-based?

I had been able to finish my first marathon and got to a Boston marathon. .
