I did a Trail 10k last month wasn’t having a good day. Forgot my 📱 so no music, just a didn’t have it in and nearly 4K got overtaken by an over weight man and a pensioner. That finished me. I started walking and kept going. After 5k the tail Enders slowly ran past me and the tail walker caught me up. Demoralised I kept walking, I went past the car park and was going to go home and thought no I will keep going. Finished the race last devastated never been this far back.
Following week at Park Run I met a lady I saw at the 10k. She said I was amazing and had inspired her to do the 10k this month. I said I finished last and walked, she said you kept going and you inspired me to do it and finish.
Doesn’t matter where you finish, just that you turn up and run.

Then you should absolutely include walking breaks or even walk with running stretches for the beginning, if you're working hard during long runs from the get-go you will have a much harder time building the aerobic base you'll need in order to actually get faster for a long distance.

I just ran my first half marathon as a 13 y.o. with my coach in April. We trained up to 10 miles in the park. At mile 9 during the race, that's when I hit the "wall" mentally, and if my coach hadn't been there right beside me, I would've given up. It also helped that my parents tried to meet me at as many mile markers as they could. I started training right after my cross country season ended, so I was in pretty good shape to begin with. I did at least 4 miles every day, and also did lots of tempo runs and hill repeats. All of my training really helped me in my race! My goal was to get sub 2 hours, and I got 1:59:59!
Love the channel! Keep up the great work! These tips are really useful!

I ran my First half in Berlin last year and my training was appalling. However, the crowd were amazing and there was support on every inch of the route. I ran with my mum who kept me going and I didn't stop, we finished in 2 hours 20. I was so proud and emotional crossing the finish hand in hand with my mum through the Brandenburg Gate! My advice for your first half is to find one with big support! The crowd truly keeps you going and also..... Vaseline.

I find that when dealing with negative thoughts / mental stories in the head while running it works best for me to not make the thinking more complicated by trying to think positive thoughts.
Makes things only more complicated and keep you in the head while running.
Just be aware of them and see a thought as a thought, dont indentify with the negative ones that go through your mind while running.
Keep focused on you breathing or make a conversation with someone if you are battling to much in your mind.

I’ve been running for over 40 year on and off, but more regular now. I remember when I took up running, I started by doing a mile, I felt knackered, then I would try 2 miles the next time, running through the mile distance without even thinking about it and getting to the 2 miles and again being knackered and so on. And before you know it, you’re up to a Half Marathon distance. I still use this technique and now up to 17 miles, my furthest distance. I believe there’s a bit of psychology involved. Also it will get to the point where never mind what your heads telling you, your body will soon tell you when it’s had enough.

Half marathons are my favourite distance. Im an ex fatty whos still a bit of a chubber, and who didnt even start running til i was like 35, so speed really isnt my thing, but the longer the distance (or harder the run) the more the field comes back to me. Due to this, my masochist brain entered me into a half in november thats entirely up a mountain with like, 1200 meters elevation gain.
Im kinda crapping myself and i love it lol oh, its got cutoff times too, just to feed my inner worrier.
anyway, just go enter one, theyre great!

My tip and it is kind of mentioned in the video is have 1 long run (not your longest, at least a month before the race and don't hurt yourself) where you run the last 3-4 kilometres at race pace having run a couple of kilometres earlier in the run at a faster pace (almost tempo, 10km pace). Your legs will feel a bit like jelly, but come race day when you see the 18km/11mile mark you will know you can finish at pace. If you're hurting before that mark, aim to get to it (18km) then finish from there. This was how I got myself though wanting to stop at 15-17km running my first half marathon last year.

And a week before the race run a solid 15km and then rest for the rest of the week till 2 days before the race do a short run of 3-5km. Its magic, you will be so powerful during race day. Also don't start to fast and don't forget to do a quick warming up before the race and remember all the great tips of this video :)

    Excellent.
    I do like a nice half-marathon.
Good distance - out long enough racing (races are an expensive business) worth traveling a distance to compete (get up early > car > 90 minutes drive etc) . A great test of fitness, of speed work for Marathons. I don't claim to be very fast but I try to treat a half as the longest short run whilst a marathon is the shortest long run!
The last race I had (before the present situation) was the Bath Half - seems a loooong time ago; March 15th!! A cracking race : however over £40 to enter (fortunate to have an old bloke's gfa so £0): running events - like many things - a treat for the less well off and an enclave for the Middle Classes....I have digressed!
I thoroughly recommend people to make the commitment to run a half.

Great review thank you for the input will get the two as soon as my one dies. In this world of carbon fiber plated shoes, not everyone has the budget to buy a racing shoes and so many reviewers on CZcams only think that racing shoes must have carbon fiber plate but for so many regular runner actually can race with lightweight shoes. I am using the Rincon one and it is great, saving it only for faster days and race days.

I did my first half marathon training a while ago. At around 14 to 15 km I felt so great as if I could keep running like this forever. But it started to get harder when I reached 18k and I had to stop by a kiosk to grab a bottle of soft drink at 19k. I half ran half walked to finish the train because I didn't want to admit that I failed to finish the first half marathon training. So I definitely have the mental strength. I have my first half marathon race next March and I don't care whether I would be the last one. Anyway there has to be someone who comes back the latest.

And for those former 1/2 and full marathon runners who are coming back from sickness and or injury like me ive always got enough in my legs to run a 1/2 marathon
Ive not done any running for about 2.5 months
My next run will be a 1/2 in about 3 weeks
Im going to do a few easy long runs on the treadmill and some swimming
On race day im going to be running with 2 mates who have not run a 1/2 before
We will be doing it at conversational pace
Most important is nothing new on race day
Eg: no new clothes or runners
    No new hydration or nutrition
Take it easy at the start and run well within yourself so you can finish strong with a smile on your face and minimize injury
    🏃‍♂️👍😁
    Love your channel
    Always great tips
Great for noobs and also us older slighly more experienced amateur plodders😁🏃‍♂️👍

      Chris G great advice!
I remember my first 1/2. Set out at 1 min faster pace per k for the first 13 k.
Died at 15k and ended up completing the last 6k at 2 min slower than my planned pace.
      Finished 1:48:50
I also tried energy gels, something I had never done before, and instantly vomited. That was at 10-11k
It was a textbook example of getting caught up with the excitement and not sticking to the pace plan, and trying things out for the first time on race day.
I broke down in tears when I crossed the line. The mental strain of keeping running whilst completely out of energy was exhausting and I wept like a little girl!
My second 1/2 was executed as per my training. I flew over the line with a great big smile. 1:44:23

Great video and information you have there for running the half, besides training you defintely need to run the right pace this is not a 10K run when I ran the half one of the best things I did was run with someone with the same pace and ability,, the miles especially in the second half flew by alot easier and finished the race better than I expected.

I started training for the half marathon flying pig here in Cincinnati in January. I hadn't seriously ran in over 10 years and I was never very good or fast at it. So my goal is to finish under 2:10 for this year, then I'll push for at least under 2 hours for the next one if I don't run the full marathon. So far I've gone from strugging to run 3 miles to struggling to run 7 miles, and a 4 mile run is pretty comfortable now. Although I don't really run at a talking pace. Military training kicks in and "If you can talk, you're not pushing yourself hard enough".
Competitiveness works against me here. I'm bad at listening to my body and will push myself more than I should. I'm overweight (need to lose 30 lbs to be a healthy weight) and I still try to run like when I was 21.

I don't know if they ever made this, but it's a brilliant idea! So many of us work nights, weekends, rotating schedules, etc. It certainly complicates things! (I do many of my runs after midnight on my treadmill, and have learned to run on a full stomach.)

  • @AvB.83
    @AvB.83 Před 2 lety

"10-12 weeks to be ready to run the half marathon"... well... more like 36 years, but that will be different for everyone I guess :D
Never thought about nutrition before running ... or during... or at all, to be honest, so I definitly learned something here. At some point, I just stuck to "I'll just get going, and see how far I get...". There were 2 half marathons in between, with the average pace pretty much spot on for all of the 21ish kilometers. But then again, the second time I ever ran more than 10 km was when COVID had already struck, so a race was never an option, until now.
With all the ongoing stuff, I'm still looking forward to my first proper half marathon race, where I'll probably incorporate much of what I learned on this channel and on others. Right now, my PB is at about 2:33, and to be honest, for someone who couldn't make it through the 400m in school, who relies on daily medication for his asthma, I'm very much fine with that. One thing that helped me a lot to go from "I hate running, but it's probably good for my health" to "whooohoo, let's go!" was changing my shoes. Went from regular cheapish running shoes to barefoot to minimal shoes and never looked back. No blisters, no pain the other day...
