I definitely love that after a certain point in the series, the staff went absolutely HAM on the background pony designs. They crafted super unique and fun things to look for in the ways of wacky manestyles, colors, or body shapes. Keep up the good work Tobby!

Yeah, instead of having the background characters look boring compared to the main characters, they made them actually look interesting which helps the main characters fit in with the rest of Equestria by being unique.

As someone who wasn’t allowed to watch the show when I was younger for being too girly and could only rely on CZcams fan content, the background 6 were my main 6. I know some see it as pandering and eye rolling but I really wish they graduated to side characters that got more frequent speaking roles and significance in more episodes.
Would’ve loved a spin off with them, even if it was only a few episodes.
I know!!! I would have also liked to see some of the other background ponies too like carrot-top, lemon hearts, and that one random blue Pegasus that looks cute lol. (18:31 3rd row 4th pony)

I have a personal connection to Dr. Whooves. While I only started watching Doctor Who recently, my close friend Ray was both an MLP and Doctor Who fan. So when we played Garry’s Mod together, he’d roleplay as Doctor Whooves while I was my regular ponysona. Flying around in the TARDIS and just doing your typical Garry’s Mod shenanigans.
At the start of the year, I started watching Doctor Who, as well as found myself drawing Dr. Whooves. Pulling me out of an art rut that I was going through. Listening to the audio drama Dr. Whooves and Assistants series (which is still going on apparently) and looking up old fan art and ask blogs.
Learning about Discord Whooves which was…honestly it really is the lil miss rarity of Dr. Whooves. I’ve also been making art of the Third Doctor and Jo as ponies because why not. Plus they have background ponies assigned to them anyway. But yeah, I really love Dr. Whooves and he means a lot to me.
Edit: My boi needs better fan songs. He only got one and it isn’t that good but it’s all I have. I wish I knew how to write lyrics.
When I was a kid and saw how popular the background characters were, I was obsessed with them as well, especially the background six. I still love them a lot as a group, and it's kinda hard to pick a favorite, but I'd probably say Lyra, Bonbon and Minuette are some of my favorites nowadays!
my favorite background ponies are the generic season 1 ones that no one cares about. everyone talks about lyra and bonbon, but no one ever talks about their clones amethyst star and shoeshine. lemon hearts, twinkleshine, sea swirl, practically all the generic pegasi besides derpy. and of course all the background fillies.
The best background filly is Tornado Bolt :3

I think they're great because you get to make up your own story with them. You get little bits of lore like their cutie mark or what they're seen doing and the rest is up to you.
i was so obsessed with dj pon3 that i begged my mom at hot topic to buy me a $60 dj pon3 jacket. i wore it for YEARS despite people constantly messing with the unicorn horn on the hood
Me having a bootleg copy of mlp toy and younger me painted it to be Vinyl it wasn't the best but I was happy anyway XD
The background ponies are so loved because you normally don’t see the same pony in a crowd twice, but most other background crowds in media have replicas just to save time, you can tell how much they put into it just based on how different the background characters are from eachother. Also as someone who grew up in the peak, derpy skyrocketed mainly when people found out her eyes were crossed due to an animation error. I don’t know why but it made people go feral over how adorable she was. Like I vividly remember debating with my friends about them and talking about how much we hoped they would keep derpys eyes the way they were due to the error. I personally love the mane and background 6’s. There’s so many other designs too that I love but the hard part is finding these characters names to properly find art and headcannons

Lyra was duplicated like a lot tho i think? like hell i remember reading a comic and there was. alicorn lyra somehow???
tbh i just hc that since Lyra was Twi's old friend j think and likely also went to Celestias school for gifted unicorns/whatever fancy school they went to(and along with the fact that she also knows the cloudwalking spell as she was off jn the bg of one episode in . cloudsdale) shes just an expert on duplication magic and made many clones of herself, with a few "glitches" where the clone is a different species such as pegasi, earth pony...alicorn(or maybe shes the alicorn and the unicorn lyra is a clone hmmmmm) for whatever reason

My favourite Background Pony is Raven Inkwell (Celestia's Secretary)
I myself don’t fully understand why, but to give an idea of how much I have overthinked this... I believe the reason why I love “aide characters” like Raven Inkwell so much is because, when I was 6 years old, I did my catechesis in the monastery where the aide of the first king of my country is buried. Learning about his story was probably the seed that blossomed into my love of Celestia’s own aide Raven Inkwell.

Something that i love about this series is that the background ponies had more designs, hairstyles, color pallette and names throught the series and most of the fandom noticed them a lot.
And it bugged me a lot when the characters said: "all ponyville is reunited"
And all ponyville was Snips and snails, the apples, Cherilee the cakes and sometimes Zecora and some recolor of a character
Back in the day my absolute fave was Amethyst Star because of her color palette and also the little diamond cutiemark. Like she's so cool! I thought she was some sort of jeweler
my all time favourite background ponies are cloud chaser and flitter, for the earlier seasons, they had very unique designs that stood out to me and need more appreciation

I love the background characters have their own character arcs and roles in slice of life.
Doctor Whooves is a treasure for me.
I discover Doctor who from my little pony however I kinda stop trying to watch it once it was removed from netflix.
Only recently I decided to watch it again on HBO Max and not only did I fall in love again but even got new memories with it so I'm kinda just learning the show again making me apricate Doctor Whooves more for without him I probably would never try to watch the show.
to explain a bit more I was really young like so young I shouldn't be watching it tbh and didn't really watch the show in order, I am now obviously and because I'm much older I understand the show A LOT more then I did as a kid, and watching the episodes I never saw lead to me laughing my butt off at the best scene I've ever saw for a show.
MLP and Dr who are now great inspiration for me hell mlp is such a inspiration in my life its a running joke that I can't ever escape it somehow my ideas roots from MLP so much.
Anyway now I'm here playing DND with a timelord character simply because I wanted to and the DM allowed it.
I have to agree because Fleur is one of my favorite ponies and she has one speaking line. lol
background ponies have definitely improved with newer seasons, especially since at first a lot of them were recolors in ponyville, and later the show has figured out their style.
Some of them were giving main character energy for sure! but we love some specific ones because fandom has love for them and nostalgia!
finally someone mentioned how much bg ponies improved over seasons, I wad always in love with some random ponies that showed up for couple of seconds because they were so well done! as you said they looked like ocs!

One of my favorite cameos, and one of the things back in the day that initially got me curious about MLP: FIM, was seeing the Lutece Twins from Bioshock Infinite in the background in the episode “Trade Ya!”
My favorite are definitely Carrot Top, the Link Easter egg pony, and Kevin the Changeling (look him up he's the best)
It's crazy to think that the animators likely chose randomly when giving a background character derp eyes. We very easily could have ended up with a completely different pony becoming derpy.
actually it was a . total accident. like i even remember hearing she was suppised yo be covered up by another pony but that pony. glitched
I like the main ones like Derpy, Vinyl, Octavia, etc
But my personal favorite would be Fluer Dis Lis I love her elegant design with the white coat, pink mane with lavender eyes she was a pretty design and always drew her back in the early days of FiM after she appeared in Season 2
Bon Bon is one of the background ponies where it appeared every episode so often. She will make an AI album of R&B cover songs by one of the background ponies. Derpy Hooves also plan on doing AI cover albums in the future.
I like Button mash:) I remember when I was like 4-5 years old I was listening to mlp songs and that one video caught my eye 👁🗨 Aaand it was a video called 'don't mine at night'. So I played that video and started listening to that song and I liked it! There was Sweetie bell too and I was so happy^^ I wanted to know about him more so I started search for him. And this how I found animations about Buttom mash and started liking him c:

I always liked Fleur de Lis, Moonlight Raven, and Sunshine Smiles. Other than that, I'm not sure. Also, my favorite easter egg background pony is the Gordon Ramsay pony. He lives in my head at this point.

And to think they only did literally one episode that gave us a glimpse at what the lives of certain background ponies are like. And of course it's the only episode where the Mane 6 are in the background for once, Because just as every other pony is a background character in the Mane 6's story the ponies of Equestria also have their own lives and to them the Mane 6 are the background ponies in their stories.

My favorites have always been Lyra and Bon Bon because it’s through these 2 that I discovered the brony community but I’ve always liked Berry Punch and thought the fandom could’ve thought of more things to say about her
i love the BG characters and side characters sm i honestly find them sm more entertaining than the main characters ironically due to the fact their lives are STILL interesting without being MAJORLY involved with a massive crisis i love these characters sm! especially when it comes to characters like bon bon and lyra like agent bonbon was MAJOR shock to me at the time LOL my current favorite BG/side characters are probably doctor whooves ( time turner ), thunderlane, soarin, double diamond, octavia and sugarbelle :)))
Berry Punch is my favorite background pony ! (originally called Pinot Noir by Laurent Faust) everytime there is alcoholism reference,, shes around ! like,, in the introduction of Flim and Flam (forgot the name of the episode,, i think its,, "reference to doctor Seuss 3000") but in this shes the only one who is not part of the mane 6,, who already got cider and who still complain about not having enough,, all the other pony who are not mane 6 who complain are one who we havent saw drink) and thats a fun detail !
I enjoyed the video and watched it in two parts over two days. 15 minutes each.

As well know as Coloratura (I maybe spelled it wrong, i watched mlp in my mother tongue). Like, she appeared for 1 or so episodes, but I’m so much in love with her, with her character and background. For me she is number one 💔

Background ponies were a gold mine of references galore! Doctor hooves was just the start - from link, rick and morty, breaking bad, sailor moon, and etc, and background is just filled ot the brink with easter eggs due the diverse nature and the background ponies.
whirlwind romance, galena the griffon, and fresh coat are some of my favorite most obscure background ponies

Didn't Hasbro kind of crack-down on Lay-out and Animators putting OCs in after Wildfire (who was Sibsy's, a storyboarder, OC) was put into a short scene as a cameo by someone else? Just like with Derpy, it only lasted a little while and the ban was eased up and we saw their inclusion again. Am I misremembering, because I feel like that happened. A Canterlot Wedding was such a big event at the time, I had forgotten all about that cameo.
Hasbro did crackdown on allowing just anybody working on the show to insert their OC/ponysona in episodes. The ban was never officially lifted, but I do think some exceptions were made occasionally either because they didn't care too much or straight up didn't notice lol. Case in point, Blue Peeler
If you think about it derpy was removed not FROM HASBRO but it was Parents who would tell HASBRO.( thats my opinion.)
The Background ponies I know are Octavia, Dr Hooves, Derpy, Vinyl, Bon Bon / Sweetie Drops, Lyra and Colgate. Not counting all the characters who made an appearance as the focus of an episode at first or have gotten several speaking roles, like Cheerilee, the Spa ponies, the Flower ponies, Strawberry, etc . Imo ponies like Mrs. Cake or Mayor Mare don't really count as BG characters since they're supporting characters who have made huge contributions to episodes besides... sitting on park benches.
I'm always glad when the ones I know make an appearance in episodes, I loved the final fanservice they gave to all of them at the end of Season 9. I'm pretty sure Starlight is the first person to actually call Dr. Hooves by his name lol. My favourite ship since the show started though has always been Octavia x Vinyl, Bon Bon and Lyra being a close second and Dr Hooves and Assistant (Derpy) coming in third.
It's interesting that the Background ponies get all the best fan content and ships, but makes sense. It just feels weird shipping the Mane Six with anyone other than the ones that they're obviously being paired with (Pinkie x Cheese, Fluttershy x Discord etc), since we have such a clear idea of who they are as characters. But, we barely know anything about the Background ponies so that lets us fill in the gaps with what they give us (also Lyra Bon being canon killed me as someone who shipped them since I was 10 years old watching Season 2 lol).
Like a fine wine, the show (overall) got better with each passing season.

The company made the characters but we gave them personalities they belong to us.
I’m pretty sure the creators of mlp wanted to have gay ships (but hasbro didn’t let them) and to make background ponies look at each other in such ways or even proposing in the background was a good way to hide it. Mlp listens to their fandom and that ultimately makes it a great show
one question remains, Will the brony fandom ever return? or is it going to slowly die off becoming quickly forgotten.
As for me, I had a few favorites. Derpy-Gate I just was so mad at, It felt like a personal attack toward the fandom at the time, plus Derpy was and still is my favorite. Although Lyra is my second.
My fav is minuette, her color palette is kinda cool and she is silly, and i just looveee berry x minuette, but ofc my another 2 fav are derpy (muffins) and Dj-pon-3

As far as I'm aware, Blue Peeler was a fan-made name voted on with a poll. Mike himself never gave his ponysona in the show an actual name, so fans did it for him lol
