I found a pretty high quality Queen Chrysalis plushie at a flea market a few months ago - her proportions were great, all the details and eyes were embroidered, she was all the right colours...but she was bald. Instead of a mane she just had her fuzzy grey pony head out for all the world to see. There was no indication she'd ever even had a mane; no ripped seams or places where it looked like someone had removed her locks. just a big, round, bald head. obviously she came home with me.

Hearing that the “Cupcake Keepsakes” were kept in jars sent a chill down my spine. Like an ancient ghoul rising from beyond its death to haunt me, never making contact but staying just in the periphery of my vision. I know what it is, I know it’s there, but god I wish I didn’t.
This creeped me out how much I relate to this. I'm high as well

This is a model example of fandom where the fan-made merch looks more official than the actual officially licensed merch.
My guess as to the "quality control" aspect of the weirder ones is that so long as the toys arent exploding in kids faces or arent directly poisoning the kids they got the pass
The theory we came up with back in the day for why Celestia was always pink is that technically she *is* pink, just a really light pink. Compare her to Rarity or other white ponies and she's a different shade and has pink line art. Probably on her official write up that goes between the cartoon and toy departments she's listed as "light pink" so that's what they mix up in the factory.

Celestia is pink in toys because hasbro thought it would be more marketable to girls. There isnt any specific lore reason
My theory with them using pink instead of white is just that white plastic can yellow very easily, is easy to stain, will look grubby faster, etc. Plus, if for children's toys, white is made with titanium dioxide, which innit exactly something you want a kid putting in their mouth. White plastic in general is kinda rare. You more often will get off-white, and instead of going for cream, they likely decided to just shift to pink.
Makes sense if it wasn't for the fact they've made Rarity toys since the start and she's always white
And in the show she has a slightly pinkish outline so the entire color could be easily interpreted as a pinkish white (?) if deemed necessary

It doesn’t even register as off white it’s just plain pink not to mention the fact that her main is also often incorrect and I can’t find a logical reason for that . Idk man . They made rarity white so they can do it . Plus rarity has a blue outline and she’s never been anywhere near full on blue. It’s just really odd

For anyone whose curious. There was actually a line of mlp/Equestria girls themed anime figures that were released that look pretty damn good (offering figures in both the characters cannon skin colour as well as human skin colour). Though sadly their pretty hard to find and are pricy buggers

Seeing the Cupcake Keepsakes genuinely shocked me. Did we all just collectively forget about the "Cupcakes" fan-fiction? I'd love to know when they released those, because that's a pretty ballsy move if you ask me. The jar is the cherry on top, seems like they were trying to appeal to the weirder sides of the fandom
Cupcakes came out in 2011, the RD jar in 2014 and sadly the cupcake keepsakes came in 2013

I was so used to the articulation and quality of Monster and Ever After High dolls, I was beyond disappointed when I got myself a Rainbow Rocks doll and found they had molded on leotards and minimal joints. 13:25 Celestia's coat isn't white. It's pale pink. But it's a VERY pale pink. I think a lot of manufacturers didn't want to replicate it, so they just went with the lightest pink they already had on hand

it could also be due to the fact she has a notable pink outline as well, she's an extremely subtle pink tone that's washed out by the outline color itself but then the manufacturers just? ignore it and goes for the full pink even if it doesnt match the outline color and goes into a darker magenta/purple kind of color

i was never an mlp fan as a kid but i had this twilight sparkle teddy which for some reason decided to make her mane and tail the most scratchy uncomfortable tinsel known to man. i remember forcing myself to cuddle her every night even though it was so uncomfortable cuz i thought that if i didn't sleep with every single teddy i owned, they would think i didn't love them anymore and would abandon me lmao

There was also the way that so much official merch would miss out Applejack and sometimes Rarity. If 3 were included, Fluttershy would typically also be dropped. Heavily contributed to the meme of AJ and Rarity being background ponies.
Also, whilst not cursed in their final form, Build a Bear ponies look cursed in their unstuffed form. About 10 years ago I went to a Pony Convention where the local BaB had set up a stand, and next to the table they had black bin bags full of unstuffed Twilight's and Dash's.
The amount of kits missing either Rarity or AJ is insane.

The reason Princess Celestia toys were pink is because Hasbro REALLY REALLY wanted a pink mascot for MLP, much like how Pinkie Pie was for G3. It's a rumor, but I heard Lauren had to fight tooth and nail for Twilight to be a lavender purple and not bright pink. It also shows in that Luna toys are always a light purple instead of the dark midnight blue color she's known for (looks too 'evil').
The Twilight rumor seems unlikely since Twilight Sparkle's design is from a G3 pony who was purple (Twilight Twinkle.) Also Lauren Faust originally envisoned her as a reintroduction of G1 Twilight, who is pink. But yeah, spot on with the Princess Celestia stuff . . . They wanted a pink alicorn to sell big toys of.

i think a part of the reason why celestia often times was miscoloured as a pink is because if you look closely at a lot of the art of her (official art) she is a very pale pink, and also the pink outlines on her can also trick the eyes to see her as more pink-ish. that doesnt excuse her being a full on pink tho, at least they could have made a very light pastel pink that is mostly just an off white

There actually is a line of humanoid mlp figures by kotobukiya that nails the human versions pretty well. Kinda wish they went with human designs based and styled around the original mlp crew instead of the equestria girls stuff I found on store shelves. Also the long pillows are pretty common in Asia either as leg support or back support!
The MLP bishoujo figurines! I accidentally saw them some time ago and was quite impressed how good they looked. Strangely enough the set also has a figurine... of Hatsune Miku and her ponysona :D

I have another theory about Celestia's color scheme. White plastic tends to stain and discolor over time VERY easily, and even Gunpla fans recommend you paint the white parts of your bot a slightly grey off-white to avoid yellowing over time. Could that be a factor in making Celestia more pink?

I believe Lauren Faust said that they made a lot of her toys pink, because according to toymakers girls=pink and alicorn toys were the most popular. Lauren wasn't happy about it . She also had to fight to keep celestia without a love interest. Cadence was basically just shuffled in there to be the pink,married celestia they wanted initially. Rarity toys have always been white, so they could just do it, they just wanted to cashgrab with stupid antiquated ideas
They had storages full of these toys before they even knew what the cartoon was gonna look like. The toys always go into production first and they choose things they already have the mold and materials for on stock.
"cupcakes" and "jar" are two words that should not be uttered about mlp in any capacity

My friend and I saw all those bootleg ponies with the terrified looking sad faces, and we lovingly refer to them as "My Little Worry". Because they look worried.

Gosh, I was obsessed with Bella Sara when I was younger!! I still have all my cards and some of the little flocked blind bag figures. Probably a couple of the big figurines too. I was so sad when the website went down; I loved collecting all the horses and decorating my room and playing all the mini games. (The fireworks one was always my favorite)

Well done video! I love that you included the scared looking pony you had near the end. In the fandom she's been lovingly named "Concerned Pony".
Then is the strangest of all fakie ponies that some of us have called "The Everything Horse" and it seems they were only sold in Canada. They have wings and unicorn horms, two front legs and then a memaid tail. Some of them have regular Mane Six colours and other have a super hero pony paint job.
For Celestia - Yes she was pink for so long because according to Hasbro "little girls want pink". I have ties to some of MLP's designers and can confirm this. It's also why we ended up with Pinkie Pie as one of the Mane Six - Hasbro required that Lauren Faust have a pink pony. She wanted G1 Surprise, a white pegasus with bright chartreuse hair but instead she modelled G3 Pinkie Pie after Surprise's personality.
Even for the original G1 ponies - their creator Bonnie Zacherle had designed a line of ponies that were realistic colours and there are prototypes of them - one is all black. Another is a brown pinto pony and they're both in the G1 collector pose. Hasbro said no to this. "Little girls want pink" was their answer and in their tests with kids, they gravitated to pink so we got the rainbow of ponies we know of today.
I'm surprised she didn't mention the NFT MLP Funkos when she was talking about them... they sure are something that exists.
Also one official toy that I find extremely funny, while not from G4, is that one Hitch toy with molded on hair that comes with a brush 💀💀
Omg this unlocked my memoirs of being younger and seeing princess Celestia toys and always be suuuuper confused. I remember being like “that looks literally nothing like Celestia??? She’s borderline Pinkie Pie pink??? And her hair isn’t that color?? Like at all????” I would always double check the packaging to make sure it was Celestia and not a completely different character.
Great vid as always Izzy!! There were several points throughout this video that I was laughing so hard my stomach started to hurt. The terribly cursed water bottle and some of the knockoff brand names nearly had me on the floor!

Does anyone remember the Concerned Pony blog that someone has for their terrified pony? They take her everywhere, like a Flat Stanley! It's really sweet, the love that someone has for this scared little pony fakey! I wanted one SO BAD when I first saw this blog, and to be honest, I still do today xD

I had the Queen Crystaist pony mania doll, she was the bomb! She could talk, and her wings could flap. I remember opening up a window that over looks a city and made her say something evil. I felt so powerful
I remember there was a moment when the Equestria Girls dolls came out when I didn't generally have complaints, but I didn't like that they had cutie marks on their cheeks. I disliked it so much that I got my dad to help me write an email to some contact we found about how I didn't like it and how I had a better suggestion, which was that the dolls could have small stickers in their sets that girls could attach to their cheeks if they wanted to. A lady responded really nicely, saying that it was a good idea but she wasn't the one to send this suggestion to. She told us where to write about it but we would have had to write it in english (not our first language) so we procrastinated on it so long that in the end we never wrote there
back when g4 had just come out i was VERY upset that they had changed the designs of many of the g3 characters (i would've been about 8 when this happened). my dad suggested i write an email to hasbro about it so i did. multiple times. i remember one of them was literally just "dear hasbro, please make rarity pink again." unfortunately unlike you i never got a response from an actual person, i just got the auto-reply
I love Izzzyzzz for making me watch a 30min video about a series I never saw and laugh my ass off about these cursed stuff, as if it was the most hilarious thing on earth
MLP blind bag toys are some of my fondest memories of playing with toys and my mother threw them all away without telling me even though I asked her to keep them. So hearing you want to do a video on it has genuinely made my day!
