  • Systur (Sigga, Beta and Elín) will represent Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin with the song 'Með Hækkandi Sól'.
    The trio, all sisters, began singing together in 2009, united by their love of blues and soul music. They come from a musical family, with their mother Ellen Kristjánsdóttir a singer, and their father Eyþór Gunnarsson a pianist.
    Growing up together, Sigríður, Elísabet and Elín Eyþórsdætur listened to a lot of their dad's jazz records at home. The 3 sisters all have their own music careers on the side, as well as performing together as a trio.

    ~~~~~ Lyrics ~~~~~
    Öldurót í hljóðri sál,
    þrautin þung umvafin sorgarsárum.
    Þrá sem laðar, brennur sem bál,
    liggur í leyni - leyndarmál - „þei þei“.
    Í ljósaskiptum fær að sjá,
    fegurð í frelsi sem þokast nær.
    Þó næturhúmið skelli á
    og ósögð orð, hugan þjá - „þei þei“.
    Í dimmum vetri - hækkar sól
    bræðir hjartans klakabönd - svo hlý.
    Í dimmum vetri - vorið væna
    vermir þitt vænghaf á ný.
    Skammdegisskuggar sækja að,
    bærast létt með hverjum andardrættir.
    Syngur í brjósti lítið lag,
    breiðir úr sér og andvarpar - „þei þei“.
    Í dimmum vetri - hækkar sól
    bræðir hjartans klakabönd - svo hlý.
    Í dimmum vetri - vorið væna
    vermir þitt vænghaf á ný.
    Og hún tekst á flug
    svífur að hæstu hæðum.
    Og færist nær því
    að finna innri ró.
    Í dimmum vetri - hækkar sól
    bræðir hjartans klakabönd - svo hlý.
    Í dimmum vetri - vorið væna
    vermir þitt vænghaf á ný.
    For everyone asking about the meaning: One of the performers, Sigga Ey, posted this on another video:
    Thank you all for your kind words and support, it means the world to us.
    I know that a lot of you don’t speak Icelandic and can’t understand what the lyrics are about, so I’ll put in this description from the songwriter
    During the winter months in Iceland we loose alot of daylight. Days get darker and longer and in the darkest winter months we only get sunlight a small part of the day. But from around December 20th the sun starts to come earlier and set later each day. We have the saying for this period for the sun as being "með hækkandi sól" that could translate to "with the sun getting higher each day".
    Originally it was written as a point of view from a 18th or 19th century icelandic woman who was in 'Vistarband'. The Icelandic vistarband was a requirement that all landless people be employed on a farm. Poor people did not really have any control of their lives and were forced to work for others and live under their rule. But the lyrics can also be related to anyone in many and all sorts of situations. Seeing some hope with the sun getting higher and days getting warmer.
      Undercurrents sweep the heart
      All but covered in deep wounds of sorrow
      Lies in hiding - come what may - Hush hush
      In the twilight you can see beautiful freedom moving closer
      As the night sky drowns
      The day torn by words
      No one can say - Hush hush
      The darkest winter, waits for the sun
      To ease away the longest nights - with light
      The darkest winter, waits for spring
      To warm our embraces again
      Darkness of winter closing in
      Forcing every single breath they take
      With growing hope for brighter days
      The ice and shadows will give way - Hush hush
      The darkest winter, waits for the sun
      To ease away the longest nights - with light
      The darkest winter, waits for spring
      To warm our embraces again
      She rises to the sky
      Embracing her own power
      And along the way
      Finding a sense of peace
      The darkest winter, waits for the sun
Just think about what they send from 2019 until today, from Hatari to this, what a musical range! Iceland is truely testing the limits of music while still keeping the quality up and I am so here for it!
      Wave root in a quiet soul
      The puzzle is heavily surrounded by wounds of sorrow
      Desire that attracts, burns like fire
      It's a secret - a secret - they are
      In the twilight gets to see
      Beauty in freedom that grows closer
      Although the night sky hits
      And unspoken words, the mind suffers - they are
      In a dark winter - the sun rises
      Melts the heart's icebergs - so warm
      In the dark of winter - spring is coming
      Reheat your wingspan
      Short day shadows apply to
      Breathe lightly with each breath
      Sings a little song in my heart
      Spreads and sighs - they they
      In a dark winter - the sun rises
      Melts the heart's icebergs - so warm
      In the dark of winter - spring is coming
      Reheat your wingspan
      And she succeeds in flying
      Soars to the highest heights
      And moves closer to it
      Finding inner peace
      In a dark winter - the sun rises
      Melts the heart's icebergs - so warm
      In the dark of winter - spring is coming
      Reheat your wingspan
      “Pounding waves on quiet souls
      Heavy pain outlined by wounds of sorrow
      Enticed desire, burning like flames
      Hiding in plain sight - secretly - hush-hush
      Midst the twilight have a look
      Alluring freedom inching closer now
      Though the night sky rushes in
      Silent questions, plague the mind - hush-hush
      In dark of winter - the sun is rising
      Melting of the frozen heart - so warm
      In dark of winter - spring is coming
      Warming your embrace again
      Shadows of shorter days engage
      Moving slowly every breath you take
      Warming performance of a song
      Spreading outwards with a sigh - hush-hush
      In dark of winter - the sun is rising
      Melting of the frozen heart - so warm
      In dark of winter - spring is coming
      Warming your embrace again
      Now she's taking off
      Racing, she's bound for glory
      Finally she will
      Find internal peace
      In dark of winter - the sun is rising
      This is an explanation of the lyrics that one of the performers (Sigga) wrote as a comment on a video of their semi-final performance on 26. February (RÚV channel): "During the winter months in Iceland we loose alot of daylight. Days get darker and longer and in the darkest winter months we only get sunlight a small part of the day. But from around December 20th the sun starts to come earlier and set later each day. We have the saying for this period for the sun as being "með hækkandi sól" that could translate to "with the sun getting higher each day". Originally it was written as a point of view from a 18th or 19th century icelandic woman who was in 'Vistarband'. The Icelandic vistarband was a requirement that all landless people be employed on a farm. Poor people did not really have any control of their lives and were forced to work for others and live under their rule. But the lyrics can also be related to anyone in many and all sorts of situations. Seeing some hope with the sun getting higher and days getting warmer."
