  • Oh my word...you guys, this is ridiculous! We planted about 5 pounds of potatoes ( • Did You Say Planting P... ) and got about 4 pounds back. After the shock, I started wondering which of these things were the problem...
    *Too much heat and drought
    *Rabbits nesting under the straw
*Black fabric under the boxes retaining too much water when it was watered
*Other animals digging and looking for food since they are far away from the house
I just don't know. What do you think? I am open to your suggestions. Mark decided next year we will plant 3 different ways and be "scientific" about the data. Here are his suggestions...
    *In boxes on fabric
    *In boxes not on fabric
*In the ground [or in a mound of dirt and straw ; )]
We will see how all of this goes! Thanks for watching and the support you show for our channel! You are a blessing!
    Blessings on you and yours,
    Penny

@@OpenHandFarm it absolutely takes practice, 'a try and see game', I like that phrase.
It took 3 Seasons before I finally grew a good crop of corn. I'm glad I persevered because last year bumper crop and enough for the freezer.
Recently I learnt a really good hint about growing larger onions. You may already know it, but if not, you might like to try this experiment also.👣💧🌱
      * when your onions are 12 to 15 cm tall, give them a haircut and remove the top half of the foliage. (Need to make sure enough leaves are left behind, for the photosynthesis process.) The haircut thickens up the number of leaves.. This means- every onion leaf, produces an onion ring.
Example, 5 leaves produce 5 onion rings. 9 leaves, produce 9 onion rings 🙌🌿

That was a great experiment at least you got a few potatoes, I been hearing from allot of others here on CZcams that there are a shortage of potatoes and allot of stores cannot get them or not going to be getting them. I told my mom we need to at least buy a couple bags to we get ours out of the ground. It just about time for us to harvest then. I got some of my fall garden planted already, going to get a few cabbage plants at the co- op next week. Planted a second planting of beans, cucumbers and zucchini hopefully will finally get some this year. I didn’t have any problem growing them last year but this year didn’t get a one. Farmers market here I come. Going to get summer to put away in the freezer, told my mom we got to get stocked up on more flour and stuff soon. Going to go ahead and buy our Turkey and ham for the holidays. They say groceries are going to be double in price by Christmas according to Walmart. But I am going to keep trusting in the Lord, that he will provide our every need according to his riches in glory through Christ Jesus.

I’ve heard that things have been kind of scarce too. Like you say though, all we can do is trust in the riches in glory of Jesus, amen! I’m glad that you got your fall garden planted. I planted eight zucchini plants this year and none of them survived. I planted one in one of my boxes up front with the cover on them and that thing has gone insane! It is huge! I have never had a zucchini plant that big. I told my husband maybe we need to build some boxes out back and fill it with dirt and zoo manoo and see if that helps. Thanks again so much for watching! Blessings on your day!

Great video! I've seen others have trouble when planting potatoes with hay. Maybe it's something, maybe not. I wouldn't use that dirt again on all of your potato plants. Maybe have a control group that uses other soil? I love how you guys want to get more data!

Definitely overcrowded the boxes. I only use two potato seeds for boxes that big. Three at most. Too much moisture will cause rotted potatoes. Straw does hold a lot of water as will the cardboard. Back off the watering and forget about the weed barrier stuff. Not needed.
4” of potting mix with some compost, 5-5-5 fertilizer and bone meal.
Then cover with 4” of potting mix. Add straw or dried grass clippings as the they grow.
    I’ve had success that way.
Forget the chicken wire. If the box bulges it’s no big deal.

Oh yes, I realized that real fast! 😂 Thank you so much for all this great information. I have done a lot of research and I am going to be picking up a load of rotted composted straw next week and going to be using that around them and putting them in the ground. Do you think the straw had something to do with limited production and rotting? Could the straw have had some residue from when it was grown that limited production?
I've tried growing potatoes in containers last year and this year with some success- depended on variety. Currently I've planted some in a row in the garden, curious how it goes.
Another thought- was something up with your seed potatoes? The best result I've had so far is using organic potatoes that I let get eyes and planted those.
Thanks for being there guinea pig for the rest of us 😁

    • @OpenHandFarm
      @OpenHandFarm  Před rokem

Those are some really good questions! I didn’t even think about the straw. We bought our seed potatoes from a place that is very reputable here in town but I like the idea of just using organic potatoes. Maybe we’ll try that in one of our experimental areas next year. We aren’t huge potato eaters so it didn’t ruin our life, but, I really want to be able to say I did it! 🤪 thanks again for your comments they are very helpful! I really appreciate you! Good luck on your harvest!
