Motocross Action's 2019 250 Shoot Out

  • The number one goal of any shootout should be to be 100 percent transparent with the reader. We want you to feel like you were the one riding the bikes. It is our job to layout the shootout to allow you to figure out what is the best bike for you. To that end we test each bike individually before putting them together. Of course, a shootout wouldn't be shootout without ranking the bikes from first through last. We understand that this ranking process can throw readers out of their wheelhouses. Faster riders have different requirements than slower riders. Riders with a good working relationships with their local dealer might want to stick with that brand. Have a garage full of Suzuki parts-good reason. Every bike in this shootout, regardless of where it ranks on the shootout hierarchy, is perfect. All six bikes have strengths and weaknesses (and one bike's weaknesses to some may be a strength to others).
As strange as it may sound, not every MXA test riders chooses to race the bike that he picked as the best all-around 250 Four-Stroke for 2019. He may admire the shootout winners attributes, but feels more comfortable on a bike that does something else a little better. It can depend on how tall you are, how much you weigh, the terrain you ride on, your skill level, what kind of tracks you race on, your budget, factory contingency programs or your favorite color. Here is our raw and unfiltered view of the 2019 250 four-strokes.

Why did not you mention anything about hrc launch control or the gear position mapping switch? Down played the Honda a lot on this one. Did your “pros” not realize all the stuff that’s on the bike to pick between 3 settings on how the engine performs?

I am a Honda fan boy, and it makes me sooo mad how they can't seem to figure out how to make a powerband usable. They are clearly the biggest company by far with a massive R&D budget. Maybe one day they will actually listen to their customer base. Great video guys - very well done.

Well that settles it. The big 2 have done their 2019 250 shootouts and Yamaha won them both hands down. I got my 2019 YZ250F and it rocks. I’m a big guy at 245 and I didn’t have to do squat to my suspension and it handles my weight like a pro and makes me look good. Thanks Yamaha for making a bike that a big guy like me can enjoy and kick butt on.

It's funner. It's less and easier maintenance. I wish the other Japanese brands would do it and force an update in Yamaha land..but at the same time, if it's not broken don't fix it. Yamaha did something very right in 2005 on that bike and I'd hate to see it disappear.

StandardFish450 Go listen to Kris keefer for an accurate shootout! He gets like 12 riders all different skill levels both male and female, tests the bikes over multiple days at multiple tracks... he does a winner for each day/track and explains why they won on that day at that track and how the bike felt. Because a bike can excel in certain conditions and struggle in others
Then for his shootout he doesn’t speak or vote he just interviews the test riders and gets their feedback to how they felt the bikes were for them... it’s a completely unbiased shootout and he puts like 40 hours on each bike before giving a detailed review

In 1995 I bought a new CR 125R for $4200.00 out the door. Lighter & more powerful nearly 1/2 the price. Thrill to ride. Now with Double the displacement & almost double the price 23 yrs later, thanks all the magazines that jammed 4 strokes down our throats & eliminating 1/2 the field in the district level, you got what you got suckers. I saved at least $70k & I'm not alone on abandoning the sport that abandoned us 2 stroke riders. Congrats on surviving w/o us. Not too hard when you make the same building 1/2 the amount of bikes.

@@mt1885 Because what do racing teams do? They rebuild the bikes their riders use after every race, regardless of whether it was actually necessary or required by the factory. It's literally something racing teams do in every motor sport. Drag racing, F1, GT3 etc, all of those cars have their engines rebuilt before and after every major up company race to ensure no issues and perfect performance from the engine.
When you do proper maintenance to a four stroke, like regular oil changes and filter maintenance, they can go hundreds of hours without rebuilding any internals. I currently have 124 hours on my 2011 KX250F, and it's still pulling strong and great just like the day i got it from someone a year ago who put 7 hours on it. Motocross 2 strokes need to be rebuilt every 20 to 30 hours according to factory recommendations, and even the lower output, lower revving trail bike 2 strokes need rebuilds envy 60 to 70 hours. That's extremely constant if you ask me, especially since trail bike 4 strokes pretty much never need to be rebuilt.
Here where i live, which is a shitty country where everything is more expensive mind you, a 4 stroke rebuild kit cost 599 dollars, that's everything you need to rebuild the entire engine, top end, bottom end, the works, while a 2 stroke rebuild kit of the same caliber costs 470 dollars. That's not ad big of a difference to me, so even if you just needed to rebuild the two stroke twice in the same time you need to rebuild a 4 stroke, it'll destroy the whole cheaper to maintain nonsense.
Don't Eben get me started on the horrible fuel economy of two strokes that also eat at your pockets over the long run

06:28. I’m confused. How is the KX cheaper than the CRF? Is this true back in the U.S.? I’ve lived abroad for so long, I don’t know the prices back home anymore. I do know however, that the Honda is almost half the price of the Kawasaki here in Thailand.

The reason they closed up the air boxes is a pretty simple one. Accountability. If your airbox allows the possibility of dirt getting in through design, it’s a manufactures fault. If you drill holes in it yourself, it’s then on you when your injectors go.

I remember one year - 80's or 90's - MXA did a shootout and decided to kill all the bikes. 'Yamaha blew it.' Said the same thing for every brand lol. It was a little OTT but admirable in some ways. I thought this was a great/ informative shootout!

How can 2019s 250 models be not that good?
Witch year 250s generally were better than today?
    2015?
    2010?

E-start, while a cool feature, is a non issue on a 250f. If one of these bikes was the best at everything and was super fun, but didn't have an e-start, then people would complain. Flipping out the kick starter and kicking it is part of the ritual. Now if it were a big bore or a 1981 Honda Cr450, then yes I could see why people would want an e-start. But is it really that big of deal on a 250f?
