  • Motocross Action's 2020 250 Shoot Out welcomes the Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda, KTM, and Husqvarna into the battlefield. MXA has never and will never do a 1 day test to pick a winner. Instead, our team of test riders put an immense amount of time into testing each bike around Southern California and racing them to come to a final conclusion to help our audience make a well informed decision when it comes time to purchasing a new motorcycle. Everyone of the six 2020 machines in this 250 shootout has a purpose. Some bikes are best suited for beginner and novice riders, while some work better for intermediate and pro riders. The bike that won our 250 four-stroke shootout is the best race bike for the majority of racers for 2020. However, don’t let the ranking alone persuade your opinion. Listen to the details about each bike to collect the information needed to make the best choice for you. Sit down, relax, grab some popcorn, and enjoy the most in depth video shoot out you will find from a media outlet.

However, I have a hard time thinking that the Husky engine will not dyno exactly like the ktm after drilling a few one inch holes on the air filter cover., unless the cams and exhaust systems are different. Its your shootout MXA and you can pick whoever you want but you lost what little credibility you have left this time by contradicting priorities you have had in the past and making contradictions within this shootout itself. The kx has the most horsepower in the class this year(mxa priority in past shootouts) yet you say the Suzuki Rmz has a better engine. ..The same bike you rate in last place...
I don't really trust the mxa reviews or even enjoy the delivery or presentation anymore. No dyno charts, no rider opinions, no logic in how you came to where each bike placed. I will buy a new bike based on experiences I have had with a brand and dealer and the summation of other test riders opinions outside of the magazine, fake news consortiams.

I checked out a Kawi 250 on the showroom floor and I thought it should have an electric start too... however, the salesman said go ahead and start it. It started on the first kick. Fuel injection and computers have made four strokes much easier to start. I would guess there are pro's and cons to each. If you are not a pro racer, than probably any of those bikes would be good. Also, you can't go by how the Factory Teams do in SX and MX, because those are highly modified bikes, an insane amount of effort goes into championships, riders, etc. So I agree with everyone who said they would probably be happy with any of them... one can always modify a little to tweak. Cheers.

I'm just wondering what your shootout results would look like if you... #1 Got out of the state of California #2 With a different group of riders. #3 Rode at more than 3 or 4 tracks (that pretty much have the same dirt). Like maybe arrange a test with local (pro, int, vet) riders at a high elevation track in Colorado, a red clay track in Oregon a midwest loam track and a sand track in Florida. Average those results together and/or rank them separate. I'd love to see what the results of this would be.

I watched the whole shootout and although I'm a Yamaha guy I don't think a bike should come in 2nd because it is great for novice riders. It's like some bikes are penalized by being geared for racing versus ones that are easier to ride. Your shootout needs to be more consistent with what characteristics you give points for and characteristics you deduct points. You need to follow the same parameters for each bike. If you're scoring bikes for competition quality or NOT then do it across the board. Dirt Bike did the same thing with their 2018 2 stroke shootout where they ranked the TM125 last because it was a superior race bike that required a skilled rider to keep it on the pipe in order to use all of its strengths. The bike was superior and finished last.

I bought MXA magazine every month for 7 years in row from 1988 to 1994. Paying every copy about 15 bucks in Italy and almost learning by heart every word. From what I see now, things got worse with MXA shootouts they're not able to analize with precision all the aspects a dirt bike has. It a resume, that doesn't satisfy me. Go back to your roots MXA.

i wish normal riders like most of us could test these bikes ourselves and come up with our own opinions. everyone has their own experience with the bikes they have owned. i for instance would say theres no bike more reliable than suzuki.. no easier bike to ride and enjoy than a honda but yamaha just feels more powerful. the 3 i own all have their own characteristics and things i love like mentioned. but to say 1 bike is much better than the other is BS the competition is just too stiff for any manufacturer to make a POS bike. any one would choose the one he feels most comfortable on.. you'd be a total goon to choose power over how you feel when riding the bike.
