    Make no mistake about it; Motocross Action Magazine isn't looking at all 6 450 motocross models for their play riding, enduro, or off-road riding abilities. To us, these are pure-bred race bikes, and that's how we tested and rated them. Our information is just a suggestion. If you don't like our test, you can find lots of other shootouts with different results - perhaps one of those will make you feel better about your own bike. But, be forewarned, we are the only media company that raced all six bikes every week, dyno'ed all six bikes, weighed all six bikes, broke things on all six bikes and spent five months doing our shootout. We use ten different test riders of varying ability and politeness who also raced all six bikes in classes from Novice to Vet to Pro.
    The goal of MXA's 2020 450 Shootout isn't to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside, but we do care about what serious motocross racers think because they push the bikes they own to the best of their ability and really that's our true audience because that's also us. Boiled down to its essence, the 2020 MXA 450 Shootout is for serious racers who want to investigate every bike out there before they spend a good chunk of their hard earned money on a new model and we're here to help them out.

    I've always relied on MXA'S shootout opinions for many years long before youtube was around when selecting my bikes. I find them to be very acurate and easily relatable to what I've experienced. Even their set up tips are always reliable for at least base line to start with. Whether you like what they say or not they are hands down the best (non bias) source for this type of review!

    From experience I can say, MX Action and Dirt Bike Magazine hit the nail on the head every time. I have never bought a bike without consulting them, and everything they said about that bike was true, accurate, and correct. 1973 TM Suzuki... "It's not whether you should buy one or not. It's more like "how many" you should buy." (So true. I walked out paying only $670, (tax included), with a brand new one. Went home and became the wheelie king! Ha! You guys are awesome. I got a 2019 KTM XCF450 recently and that thing is an absolute monster. It’s the first bike that I’ve ever bought brand new, my first four-stroke (I’ve always ridden two-strokes), and also the best bike I’ve ever owned/ridden hands down. I want to also say the owners manual that my bike came with is so insanely helpful and well thought out. Makes taking care of the bike easy. The suspension and brakes are the things I noticed most compared to my previous bikes. On the suspension; the fact I can click it down nice and soft for the trails and then simply click it up and go slay the race track is just too cool. Once you get the air pressure set right for your weight, via the included fork/shock air pump, you’re good to go and can just click it around to dial it in. It’s so fucking awesome. I’ve always ridden YZ250 two-strokes and I love them but these new bikes are just insane.

    The stock ergos on the 2020 Yamaha I don’t think get emphasized enough glad MXA brought it up. As much as I wanted to love the bike, it was the most awkward bike I’ve ridden ergonomically at least for me personally. In stock form has virtually NOTHING to grab with your legs in comparison to the 19 and up Kawasaki and Hondas. Brilliant otherwise but I couldn’t get over that awkward feel.

    • @M6BrokeMe
      @M6BrokeMe Před 4 lety

      Dude. How can you possibly know so much about so many bikes? You have ridden and evaluated the 2019 and 2020 Yamaha, Kawasaki and Hondas and it's not even November of 2019? WOW!

    • @dirtbikejohnny
      @dirtbikejohnny Před 4 lety +2

      M6BrokeMe I have not ridden the 2020 Honda or 2020 Kawasaki but I have ridden two separate 2019 Hondas (one stock one with suspension), 18 and 2020 Yamaha stock , I own a 2019 Kawasaki with many many mods, heck just last weekend rode my friends 18 and 2019 KTMs. A lot of riders in my crew change bikes every year so I am fortunate to have the opportunity to try a lot of them. All I mean by my comment is the Yamaha ergonomics stock out of the factory are very awkward and the bike itself has virtually nothing to grab with your legs in its stock form. The owner has since put a taller winged seat on it. My says makes a huge difference and gives you something to contact with your knee braces. Kawasaki the rider triangle has such a contact patch that my frame looks like it’s polished because I’m constantly all over the bike. The Honda fits the same way for me at 5’11”. And I’m not a Yamaha hater by any means I own a 2011 YZ 450 F with 160 hours on it to this day it’s the bike I like won’t get rid of.

    • @billb8862
      @billb8862 Před 4 lety +3

      I’m a Honda guy and I agree about the Yamahas eurgos. It’s odd feeling. But I would much rather the Yamaha of a Kawasaki. I owned a KX for 2 months and pretty much fell apart lol. Never again Honda or Yamaha for life.

    • @dirtbikejohnny
      @dirtbikejohnny Před 4 lety

      Aidan’s ATV Adventures I’m a Yamaha guy don’t get me wrong by my comment. My 2011 Yz450f has 165 hours and will never be sold! I just thought the 2020 was so bizarre and odd when I rode it which deterred me from buying one. I did ride it again with a taller seat, different bars, suspension, and Rekluse CX and it felt much more comfortable but I still prefer the basically everything about the kawi performance and Motowise. As for kawi falling apart I will say this. With 32 hours my 19’ kawi .... looks like it has 60 hours on it. Idk why but the fit finish and quality of the Kawi seems to show wear way earlier and stupid things happen like losing seat bolts... But man I love the feel of the bike overall and it’s been reliable for me and is an unbelievable machine. Honda is my close second for sure though 👍

      @billb8862 Před 4 lety +1

      Love both. My current bike for overall riding is a 2014 Yz250F. That bike is bullet proof. Best bike I’ve ever owned. I also have a 2014 Crf450r for tracks and racing. For a track 450 I’ve only riden a Honda. Everything else I ride the YZ. Both are equally cool to me 🤘🏻

    Alright best shoot out of the year! Kawi's rear seat bolt always been a problem with every Kawasaki I owned from 2008 to 2016. Pretty tired of replacing the seat bolt. I knew Yamaha and KTM were the best. I wanted a Yamaha but after this and seeing Plessinger eat it at monster cup. Call it what you want I believe it was the bikes fault. I think I'm going with KTM for the next bike. Also I rode a 18.5 FE KTM 450 few months ago. Was one the best bikes I've ever ridden.

    Great review.
    What amazes me is reviewers like you, and this applies to road bikes & cars reviews, can identify fundamental flaws that should have been identified by the so called development riders/drivers and never got to go into production. I accept that component cost is a consideration but if it does not work then it should not be on the bike/car.
    Save manufacturing cost but then not sell bikes or as many because there are better bikes to choose from, sometimes at less cost. False economy imo.

      We plan out our numbers for each bike at the beginning of the year. The each number represents a year, a model and brand for that year. For 2020 all of our Yamaha's end with the number 4 and all of our 450s begin with the number 9. This way when we look at our bike tests from years past we can check our number chart to determine which year, which brand and which model it is.

    I have a question for all you keyboard bike mechanics. I am 6’2 and 165lbs and I have a 2017 ktm 150sx and I can’t get the bike to turn good for the life of me. I’ve pulled the fork tubs up, tried tall bars, shorter bars, softened up the suspension stiffened it. Only place I get it to turn good is sand tracks. Any suggestions??

      Did you set the sag right ? You're 6'2 but if you have long legs instead of a long upper body you can put a taller seat on it so you can get forward more. Try adjusting the forks so it is not standing up going through the turns.

      @dirtbikejohnny Před 4 lety +3

      Look up the article “is your handlebar position working against you.” It’s an article on ThumperTalk. Aside from Proper sag/springs, could be a bar position/attack position thing. I never care for when bike have the bars in the forward mount personally They gotta be like neutral and low but I’m 5’ 11”. Also could play with peg height to put you in a more neutral spot.

    I still want to take my cr500 motor and pit in a new yz450 frame. It is currently in a 01 cr250r frame, built by Service Honda. After years of racing 4 strokes, it is taking me a bit to get back to the level I was at on my 2001 YZ250. I personally feel 4 stroke make you a lazy rider. That's my this next season I will be racing my CR500AF in the 450 intermediate/pro class at my local track.

    hello everybody, i wanted to ask you guys a question : i've always dreamed my whole life to ride and practice motocross but sadly never had the opportunity...
    But now i've decided that i want to give it a try no matter what.
    But i got 2 questions for you guys that really trouble me :
    1/ Do you think being a really big dude like me is a "no go" for this ? (former powerlifter : 6"1 and 265lbs).
    2/ Do you think my age (44 years old) can be a problem, especially when you recovered from a knee's tendon surgery from a few years ago ? (excuse my english i'm french)
    Thank you so much for your advices guys, especially if you are advanced riders !

      do it! Im 51 still riding since 17yo if you have a previous injury keep a brace on it and always wear full riding gear with knee & elbow protection. Ride at your own pace work at being smooth and controlled with good techniques you can always jump on youtube for good instruction videos too
