    I strongly dislike these “make it yourself!” beginner vegan tips. Yes it appeals to some people to go all natural and prep everything in their kitchen but it’s not realistic or sustainable to make everything from scratch, like readily available non dairy milks, peanut butter, etc. You’d have to look pretty hard in my house to spot that we’re vegan because we buy normal, non organic, available-at-every-grocery-store-ever ingredients because we only have access to 1 grocery store and we’re poor lol. Most people who come to my house say they find this way of living much more doable than what their “usual” idea of vegans are.

    It’s minor but can we also talk about how processing sugar with bone char is an North American issue? I understand that you are only used to what is around you, but especially videos online, they reach a global audience but country-specific information is being passed as universal. The pantry video made it sound like all sugar everywhere is not vegan unless you buy organic, but in Europe the sugar packaging either has a clear marking v for vegan which is most sugars to begin with or it doesn’t, you do not have to go to a specialty organic store or even buy the double the price organic option at the regular supermarket. Tell people to check the packaging and do research instead of “just buy organic because it’s always better”.

    • @marckealhofer1769
      @marckealhofer1769 Před 4 lety +4

      In the US, some manufacturers are no longer using bone char or only using it at some of their factories. It can be very difficult to find whether the big brand sugar at the supermarket is actually vegan or not in the US, but a surprising amount of it IS actually vegan. Even the Domino sugar at my local grocery store is technically vegan, as the particular factory that supplies my area doesn’t use bone char.

    • @scarlet8078
      @scarlet8078 Před 4 lety +10

      It's not a problem in the US either. You can very clearly see if the sugar is vegan or not. Like the other commenter said, even the major sugar brand (Domino) is vegan. I go to Whole Foods & I can't even find a sugar that's not marked if it's vegan. Maybe there are some black market places where very cheap sugar is sold unmarked but I find it hard to believe that many vegans are shopping that way

    • @marckealhofer1769
      @marckealhofer1769 Před 4 lety +3

      Scarlet I think it can be a problem in the US still. The cheap big brand white sugar at my local grocery store are never labeled, and I’m not going to be shopping at Whole Foods on my budget. I only know that the Domino sugar in my area is vegan because they are responsive when you contact them to ask. It’s not on the container or on their website. Domino does has west coast plants that are NOT vegan, and the sugar is packaged in the exact same containers. You have to check the lot number to determine that it’s coming from a factory that doesn’t use bone char.

    Tip from a brazilian: Idk about the smell part. But cooking beans doesn't take 3 hours. Just use a pressure cooker. It takes like 40 minutes to cook them then (talking abt standard white or black beans here). And that's without soaking. Soaked beans take even less time.
    Plus as long as you don't flavour them yet, you can make a big batch and just freeze parts of it for later use and they won't go bad.This way you can save time and also flavour them differently each time.
    So if you can bear with the smell maybe this would help, if not for yourself maybe it'll make it easier for your partner and children? Idk, just a tip.

    regarding cooking beans: I'll usually cook a few massive pots of beans, and freeze them in portions. I occasionally need to suppliment with canned beans, but that way I mostly have beans ready whenever i need them.
    I think part of the problem with canned beans isn't the cans themself, but with the amount of non-beaniness in a can of beans. A 400g can of beans is usually between 200-250g cooked beans and 150-200g of water/salt/additives/can. In addition, dried beans take up a lot of water during cooking, so, assuming they double in weight (usually at least, or more), a can of beans is somewhere between 1/3-1/4 beans. A 2kg package of dried beans is packaged in plastic, yes, but is essentially equivalent to 20 cans of beans in beans.
    It's also 1/4 the amount of weight to transport, and can be packed somewhat more densely than cans, which is something i try to take into consideration when it comes to the environmental impact of my food. Transport's a bigger deal for me though because I live really far north, so almost everything has to travel pretty far to get here.

    Completely agree with you on the silk unflavored/unsweetened almond milk! I hate the flavor of that stuff but bared w/ it for a while bc it was the only plain/unsweetened one at Costco (they now have an in-house one that I like much better). You are literally the first person I’ve ever seen say that.

    Thank you for your always so practical and realistic approach to veganism. So rare these days. Love your review videos! Keep being you ☺️

    I love the smell of cooking beans lmao maybe because I grew up with it
    Edit to add: I don't mean this in an offensive way, but your view of veganism is very....uh...US centric white lol which is okay! I just mean. I, definitely, do eat a cup of beans very easily

      @@ziraiah same. I accidentally had a can of mixed beans with a sweet potato. I didn't notice until my husband pointed it out

      Maybe that's because I'm brazilian, but beans are sooo good. I mean, i just put onions and bay leaves to cook with my beans, freeze it and eat it for the whole week. Love the smell!

    Bean cooking protip! If beans give you digestive trouble, soak the beans, rinse them, and then freeze them. It's a great meal prep, there's sciencey stuff as to why it works, but I'm not going to explain it all lol.

      If you're someone with digestive sensibility, beans are better in really small quantity (I'm eating low fodmap and beans are in the red zone ^^)

    Have you had the Wild Wood high protein tofu? It’s super firm and, as the name suggests, almost 2x protein per 3 oz serving

    Also girl, you are waaay too picky to judge other people’s food choices lol. It’s odd hearing things that taste just fine to me be described as “gross”. Your taste buds must be next level sensitive.

    I keep dry legumes on hand. Right now I have some navy beans in my Instant Pot for some whole wheat mac and yeast with beans in the sauce. I haven't tried a bean yeast sauce. But it should be good. I will probably add broccoli to the mac and yeast. It will make for a nice healthy meal.
    I also keep canned beans on hand for when I don't want to deal with cooking beans. Vegan baked beans are good to have on hand. I recently tried the Heinz vegetarian baked beans. They are delicious. And the cans are small. So you don't have to worry about leftovers.

    I have been watching your videos for probably around a year now, more or less, and I think I might go vegan/vegetarian when I move out. I've slowly stopped eating as much meat and I've been trying to find vegan alternatives to some of my favorites foods, and it's actually been pretty successful. I cook a lot, so I have even come up with some of my own really simple vegan recipes, including a vegan cheese-ish thing. Right not I can't go vegan, because I cook for my dad and sister almost every day, and I don't want to force that on them, but I do try to avoid meat when possible. I just thought I'd share this since watching your videos has encouraged me to consider one day going vegan! It won't be a while cause I can't move out for at least 6 months, and it still might not be possible right away, but eventually!

    I highly recommend spelt as a basis for salads and other meals. It's quite high in protein and has a nice, nutty flavor. There are more and more varieties available which don't need to soak, but are pre cooked and take roughly the same amount of time to cook as rice, for example.

    I love your videos but I find your comments here extremely judgemental..
    I actually don't mind the smell of beans cooking for example, grew up with that, and that recipe of oatmilk, if you add a little vanilla extract, is pretty damn delicious.
    Just the whole tone for me here was off, and I'm not even vegan nor I follow that lady but I like your videos since usually your arguments are founded but honestly, not on this one.

    I'm similarly disorganized and mostly use canned beans- I always felt a bit awful about the waste, so that's good to hear! And I do the homemade oat milk from a price perspective and it's definitely not as good as store bought :P
