    I've really appreciated Ellen introducing more foods into her diet. She even featured beyond burgers in a grocery haul about a year or so ago! She seems to have gotten a much better balance between whole foods and adding some 'processed' stuff into her diet. I eat similarly but with a bit more protein focus (trying to get 120-140g a day with mock meats, protein powder, etc at every meal).
    Also it is SO CUTE when your kid talks on camera. I understand you want to keep the privacy and totally respect it but Im glad you allow for a few peeps from them to come out- so so cute! and it is so sweet to watch you intereact with them

    Ellen's diet does seem to have improved a lot recently. From the videos I've seen, she tends to eat protein at lunch and dinner and sometimes a bit with breakfast, when she has her granola, which has quite a bit of of quinoa. Kids also seem to be eating more protein overall. She seems more relaxed about processed stuff too. I even saw a video where they all ate the granola with some sort of store bought, fortified, plant milk! The shock!

    In regards to your comment about magnesium ("who on any sort of plant-based diet would be deficient in Mg?"), at the moment there is actually interesting evidence that points to magnesium being used up and excreted a lot faster during periods of intense stress or longer periods of chronic stress. Since Mg is quite important in a series of processes in the body, including sleep regulation and relaxation, having a higher intake of Mg can actually be helpful in reducing overall levels of stress. So according to its advantageous sodium-potassium ratio and high magnesium content, coconut water seems like a great drink to me to add to a varied diet :)

    I wish the awareness of our needs of Iodine would shift our recognition away from sea vegetables and get back to using just simple iodized salt. Seaweed/Kelp products just aren't regulated the same way. Good luck finding out where these things are grown or harvested. The Iodine content, as correctly stated in this video, ranges wildly. You can have modest amounts of seaweed containing 700%+ daily value or you can have some with only trace amounts. Like what was said, you really really do not want to be consuming too much iodine on a regular basis. Iodized salt is extremely cheap and highly regulated. You only need 1/4 tsp to get around 40% of your daily value. Another thing about seaweed, it's been known to absorb heavy metals which is very difficult for us consumers to really know how much is in there. Sea veggies are totally fine to eat if you like them, but don't delude yourself by trying to treat them as a supplement when we actually do have regulated sources you can trust as supplements.

  • @krakowska19
    @krakowska19 Před 2 lety +19

    Yeah, I don't see enough people take iodine seriously and you need to be really really careful with it. I know this would be extreme example, but my mom was like 6 months pregnant with my brother when Chernobyl happened (and we live in a neighboring country) and at that time a 'prevention procedure' was taking iodine solution and the amount that was recommended...effed us up. We all have thyroid problems. My mom has, my brother has (and doctor's say it isn't common that men get thyroid problems), I have those problems even though I was born 8 years after him, and our doctor recommended my younger sister to monitor her hormones cos it is highly probably she will also suffer from this. So be mindful about your iodine cos it's usually really small doses that can tip the scale and cause a lot of damage, and let me tell you, thyroid problems aren't fun

    • @liatm3042
      @liatm3042 Před 2 lety +2

      Was it the iodine that they took that caused the issue though? I haven't actually looked into this but a few of my family members lived in Romania at the time and, though they didn't take any iodine, they all now have hashimoto's. It could be genetic I guess but it's suspicious that no one else in our family (we lived quite far from the incident at the time) has ever experienced anything similar. We always assumed their thyroid issues were caused by radiation exposure, since radioactive iodine was said to cause such things, but maybe the same can be said about normal iodine?

    • @mariaRD

      @@liatm3042 the practice than was 'take this iodine solution so when the radiation reaches us, your thyroid took so much of 'good' iodine that it would not 'have space' for the radioactive one'. But also, it was Poland, it was a really weird time for us, we were taking information from USSR, cos the west was still 'officially evil'. It was basically 'hurt yourself so you won't be hurt even more' situation'. So that could be, that we both are right, in both countries we had different actions that resulted in the same thing. But it's also probably a different case since my mom was pregnant at that time (and worked in a place that manufactured some meds so she had really easy access to them) and she was the first to get anything 'preventative'.

    • @krakowska19
      @krakowska19 Před 2 lety

      @@mariaRD no, it probably was that iodine solution cos the recommend dose turned out to be higher than radiation that reached us. And also it is fresh to me since war in Ukraine started. In first few days we had info that Russian went into no-go zone and by that the radiation levels went up. People started to panic buy iodine solution and the people that study radiation were like 'please don't freaking do this cos you're gonna hurt yourself much more with this than if the radiation reaches us'. And as I said, my mom was bit far into pregnancy so she was first in line for 'preventative' measures

  • @user-wi3yx3gy2o
    @user-wi3yx3gy2o Před 2 lety +2

    Fat in general, omega 3 fats, omega 6 fats, including a certain implied ~7% minimum percentage of saturated fat, is critical to human development for pregnant women, breastfeeding women (bio throughout, tbc), and children. The need for fat as a percentage of the diet drops over time as we age from gestational to adult, especially for men. 10-20 percent of calories from fat (about a minimum of 20 grams to 45 grams of fat per day for almost everyone) is enough for most adults (20+ grams for a 5 foot 4 inch man who needs 1800 calories per day to maintain body weight, 30+ grams for average 5 foot 4 inch height women who needs 1800 calories per day to maintain body weight, 25+ grams for a 5 foot 9 inch man who requires 2200 calories to maintain body weight, 36+ grams for a 5 foot 9 inch woman who requires a 2200 calories per day to maintain body weight, 30+ grams for a man who is 6 feet tall and requires 2450 calories per day to maintain bodyweight, or 45+ grams for a woman who is 6 feet tall and requires 2450 calories per day to maintain bodyweight).
    However, infants require over 25% of calories from fat, and over 12.5% of calories from saturated fat (50% and 25% is closer to ideal). This only drops to over 15%-20% of calories from fat for weaning 1-3 year olds (and likely more than 7.5% to 10% of calories from saturated fat), but closer to 30%-40% of calories and 15% to 20% from saturated fat is best. 4 year olds and pubescent tweens and teens require over 12.5% to 15% of calories from fat, depending mostly on age (25% to 30% is closer to ideal) and likely over 1.25% to 7.5% of calories from saturated fat (again depending mostly on age), but (2.5% to 15% is closer to ideal).
    Ordinarily, our intake of saturated fat would be more than 7% of or your overall fat requirement (1.4-3.5 grams for almost everyone), and your need for omega 3s should be about 7% or your overall fat requirement (1-4-3.2 grams, and your need for omega 6 is about 28% of your overall fat requirement (5.6-12.6). However, the upper limits for saturated fat are more than 5 times thins, about 5% to 10% of calories (the government recommendation is below 10, but below 7% is really where CVD risk starts to drop), or about half the fat minimums stated above (i.e. no more than 10 to 19.4 grams per day of saturate fat for almost all adults). So, its really a matter of getting enough fats in general, but not so much saturated fat that it is more than 5%-7% of calories (10 to 19.4 grams per day of saturate fat for almost all adults) overall. But eating say 100 calories of mature coconut, which provides 8.4 grams of saturated fat is on occasion or even every day is fine, especially for children and pregnant or nursing women.
    So, although the body produces the saturated fat needed by the fetus and nursing infant for the most part, for pregnant and nursing mothers, it is best to consume at least about 175% your minimum saturated fat needs of approximately 1.8% of your normal calorie requirement (or at least 3-4% of total calories). So, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you want to push this closer to or even exceed 5% of calories from saturated fats (10 to 19.4 grams per day of saturated fat for almost all adults), and also make sure omega 3s are as adequate. It would be OK to consume more than this much saturated fat because the understanding is that even if you were pregnant or breastfeeding constantly for a large part of your life, say 20 years even, there would be a period from about age 40 when you could eat much less saturated fat, and that is significant. Also, there are other reasons why if you want to live as long as possible, you shouldn't be pregnant or breastfeeding for 20 years.
    Electrolytes are an issue for most people, even vegans. Even vegan diets can me deficient in potassium. But also other minerals can be deficient on any diet, even vegan diets. High sweet fruit diets (>2/3 of calories from sweet fruit) are apt to be low in salt unless you add salt. If do not salt your food at all, for example if you eat almost nothing but sweet fruit, have a caloric deficit, or you exercise a lot or work outside in the heat, you may be deficient in salt. its just one of those issues where its much better to be vegan, but possibly not enough to be perfectly optimal.
    Eating a lot more fruit and veg is not usually bad advice for most people, starting from where most people are. However, if you are a fruitarian or low fat high carb raw or even raw til 4 person, probably the advice is going the opposite direction: add more fat and take any needed supplements at least.
