  • Our scientific temper is well known - there is always talk about how Indians run half of NASA and much of Silicon Valley - but in over 90 years we have not got a Nobel Prise for the sciences and just 5 Indian Citizens have been awarded this prestigious prize in a 120 years. Why? And where will India's next Nobel Prize come from?

Why didn't I include the following in the 'Indian' Nobel Prize winners list?
    - simply because they were not Indian citizens anymore when they got the Nobel Prize !!!!
    1. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (Physics)
    2. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (Chemistry)
    3. Dr. Har Govind Khurana (Medicine)
    4. Abhijit Bannerjee (Economics) - yup even him - gave up his citizenship not long ago.

And even more important than citizenship, the actual education they received, the infrastructure, and environment which contributed towards their achievements was at universities in those Western countries. Dr. Abdus Salam was born in pre-independence Punjab and became a Pakistani citizen but his education and work took place in UK institutions.
In short, one would be hard pressed to find individuals who've made any breakthrough scientific achievements in science while in India.

Apologies in advance for the long comment
I was one of the students taught by the Late SM Chitre, who was Padma Shree and held the prestigious fellowship of the Royal Society (you can google his name). This has been one of the pressing questions he asked us, why particularly no significant scientific revolution happen in India after the independence? Throughout history, there have been places where such a knowledge boom occurs. A person makes a significant breakthrough, and the people around work on it, which leads to an explosion of knowledge in the relevant field. Many of the Nobel laureates in Sciences are part of such communities, where everyone around them is coming up with new revolutionary ideas and testing them rigorously. However, in India, it is failing to happen since independence.
During my discussions and observations with people around me, we feel like there are multiple reasons. I will list the non-trivial issues here. One thing is the politics in the institutes. The power hunger of others makes it harder for capable people to do their work in peace.
Other overlooked issues are the cram schools for JEE preparations(Allen, Akash...Kota stuff). They brutally kill any genuine curiosity a student might have, which is essential if you wish to work on the frontier of science. JEE is deemed one of the toughest exams, but an intellectual student who hasn't studied in a cram school or doesn't know the tricks cannot answer all questions in the given time frame. Furthermore, the exam doesn't give you the luxury to sit and think over a question, which is another essential element for scientific research (to sit and think over a problem). Thus, many good students who have the potential to make breakthroughs are weeded out in these "tough" exams. So, there is not much expectation of Nobel-like breakthroughs from IITs.
Another is the lack of courage, many don't feel courageous enough to make a jump in intellect, and they feel like they can't outsmart the contemporary work. An example from my life is that in 2020 or 2019, I guess John G Cramer published his test on Bohmian Theory. I was dissatisfied with his argument and could see some flaws in it. So I went to my colleagues and profs and shared that this work was wrong. They were like, "Reread it. You must have missed something or failed to understand." Instead of hearing my argument, they blatantly defended Cramer's work. Well, I was stubborn and emailed Cramer pointing out his fatal flaw. After exchanging emails, he got convinced, withdrew his paper, and praised me for my intellect. Through this event and others, I learnt that many people here lack the nerve to make up their case, which is a massive disadvantage if you wish to make breakthroughs and hope to earn a Nobel.
Despite all this, there are people of intellect here, who have made significant contributions to the sciences. Still, the lack of scientific explosion (because of lack of funding, internal politics, lack of chutzpah and quality of students) has lessened the chances of the emergence of an idea that can lead to a Nobel.
Even when CV Raman got the Nobel for Physics, he had contemporaries around him who made great scientific contributions. You know, the Higgs Boson. The word Boson is named after the Indian Physicist Satyendra Nath Bose. He was the contemporary of CV Raman. Saha Equation is named after Meghnad Saha, which allowed us to find the chemical composition of stars. He also lived around the same time. To get a Nobel in science, we need to create such an explosion of knowledge. To achieve that, we need to fund and support capable people and help nurture a proper environment.

Also,I think where you mentioned about that 'lack of courage' point,on that I just wanna say that I believe it's not about the courage - there are enough number of courageous people who carry the potential & curiosity to discover which has been discovered by any scientist, but the 'interest'!Again,I mean there are millions of curious students & researchers who have that interest, and many of them go a lot forward in their lives & careers because they get that motivation & support, while,at the same time, many who have that interest, can't go ahead because they aren't supported either properly or just at all!Whereas, many just don't have any interest, which I started writing this comment about,to do something innovative, curious & different from orthodox-bookish thing,or to support that student who finds really something new or some fault in some big scientist's discovery, like in you found in John G Cramer's test on Bohmian Theory, which if supported could be huge & revolutionary milestone/achievement for that student & would definitely bring laurels for the nation đŸ‡źđŸ‡łâ€ as well!

One factor to consider, success or life in india is all about surviving and running for better life than your competitor. Basic life is difficult for lot of people coz we dont have any financial or social security. Satyen bose, Jagadish bose, Ravindranath, Amartya are all from rich background. india and future India, please avoid chaos, religious problems, quick 30 second tiktok, and think hard think deep above these petty things... What really matters, what you really want. Yes, you have to struggle, go through pain, be the first one, but its fine, you may get it or may not get it. Just try... and you will know you tried.

Getting a faculty position in one of the elite indian institutes is equivalent to finding diamond in african forest. And research facilities in other university, institutes not worth mentioning. Even with merit, excellent record of publications people are knocking door to door for years. And those who get positions are almost close to 40, beyond the golden time of your mind. It's very difficult when you have to find stability in your life and also come up with a once in a generation idea that leads you to Nobel prize.

Why one will go to research with some 20k( in the highest cases) monthly scholarship when he can easily pursue his carrier in some private company with a 10-15 LPA? Coupled with ignorance about India, Asia or even Africa, I am sure many outstanding people have been to get into a shortlist.

Red tape and lack of support are a close second. This is coming from a tier1 research institute, the rest of tier2 and below are even worse off...There is definitely a reason that the same Indian students who couldn't do that well in India perform excellently abroad when they are provided ample resources and support. The talent and calibre required are all there, all we need is support and resources.

    First point defines it all
    1) Lack of Investment .
Why would we invest on R&D when we think that salaries of army personnel are a burden.
Another informal reason I would like to point out is the lack of efficient teachers
teachers a very arrogant, ignorant towards teaching,
they do not keep in mind that they are shaping the future of this country
they scold us for asking doubts as if it hurts their ego
and the cherry on the cake is the education system itself
And we like to link ourselves with our glorious ancestors, ignoring the fact that we have achieved nothing significant in this modern era,
and if you try to point the mistakes critically you are given a visa to pakistan

There's a fundamental problem in education we receive at every phase of life starting from high school to college.
At high school - Assessment marks on theoretical subjects have more weightage than practical ones
At College - We are taught to be robots to get picked easily by companies
Worse part is the purpose for which big institutes like IITs NITs which are meant to produce high quality engineers and scientists to do research are busy placing students at big IT Companies.
The fundamental principle of any educational institute is to provide education but most of them are busy doing business....

Rudyard Kipling (Literature - born in Maharashtra) & Ronald Ross (Medicine - Almora, U'khand) - they were also Indian by descent
A fun fact: Narendra Modi has also won a Nobel... Ig Nobel Prize (a satirical to Nobel) in 2019 along with Some other Country's leaders, for their Covid-19 management.
