    I love my Pocket Operator ko.. but the Tonic is easily my most used Pocket Operator. Just to show its usefulness i make a dawless track utilizing drum samples from the Pocket Operator Tonic and sample them into my MPC 3000 to sequence the song.

    Seeing the MPC close up is giving me PTSD flashbacks to my DPS-12. That one was a nightmare. Some poor bastard translated the manual into a human language. Oh yeah, I did the mistake of getting the FX expansion too. The guy at the store was like, "I can sell the expansion to you, but I can't help you with it. No one can."

    Nice groove bro. I also felt that charging an extra 100 bucks for the software to use all the sound design possibilities of the PO-32 was a bit cheeky. But I bit the bullet, and seriously, it makes the sound pallet of that little thing IMMENSE. It's particularly the B knob, allowing you to morph between 2 sounds you've designed that sets it apart.

  • @fiscaldisco5234
    @fiscaldisco5234 Před 4 lety +38

    Amazing how hands on and fast the MPC workflow is. I used to make beats on Maschine and I grew to hate music software. Now i make my beats with an Alesis SR18 and an OP-Z together to a multitrack recorder and have never been happier. Yeah it can seem arcane but working with gear fills your grooves with happy accidents and gives you a kind of a “fuck it” attitude that is so freeing. You would’ve been messing with an EQ chart for 30 minutes in a DAW lol

    • @dianevrules
      @dianevrules Před 4 lety +2

      Only time I use a Daw (Reaper) is for transfers and mixing. I can never use that bs for composition or recording. Production and tracking are done exclusively on hardware. MPC 2000 and a portastudio.

    • @fiscaldisco5234
      @fiscaldisco5234 Před 4 lety

      Did my internship as a music therapist last year with troubled teens that kinda drew me back to making beats and stuff. We started out on a laptop, but after a while I started to notice they had a lot of trouble staying focused and weren’t really connecting. Since my own interest was piqued I had gotten myself my first analog mono synth and a Groovebox, the latter which I took over a couple of times and was an instant hit. Not only was it easier to connect with these kids because we could work simultaneously on a single machine, they also were waaaaay more stimulated by having a tangible instrument with pads, knobs and dials by which they could explore a wide variety of sounds and completely lose track of time. Coming from playing mostly (bass) guitar, this was such an eye opener! So yeah, for all the possibilities and convenience you might have in software, there is much to be said for having a hardware instrument despite all its quirks and limitations.

    • @Dru_Won
      @Dru_Won Před 4 lety

      I feel you to a certain extent - but you can work exactly the same way on machine for the most part, if you choose to. Coming from a 100% hardware background , I've made beats on maschine for a year and never experienced anywhere close to as fast of a workflow.

    • @fiscaldisco5234
      @fiscaldisco5234 Před 4 lety

      Dru Won yeah for sure Maschine has an amazing workflow and as much as hardware is great, tracking drum parts to isolate things like kick and snare can be a pain with drum machines. That’s why I’m having to use two drum machines. I’m experimenting with just doing beats on Maschine and tracking the rest as audio from gear next though.

    Sounds incredible and to think its almost all from the Tonic! I got the KO after seeing your videos and have loved it since. If I hadn't just bought a digitakt I'd consider getting the tonic too just to have fun with that (I realize the Tonic is much cheaper before anyone comments but that's all I have to spend and once it shows up I know I'm going to be fully distracted by that lol). Love the jam you come up with and it always impresses me how quick you do it even if there were a few moments of frustration that's still a quick build for something so fun to hear and watch you make.

    Great video! One quick tip. Before you start sequencing on the MPC 3000, assign the slider to the pad FIRST. You can chose (filter, decay, attack, pitch, etc). Once you record your sequence you can go back {AFTER} and make subtle changes with the slider while in overdub mode. Makes the loop really dynamic. It took me over a year to figure that one out. 🤦‍♂️ The manual was kind of vague on the use of the slider.

    Man, seeing those floppies reminds me of the very first computer my dad bought in the early 90's. All of the apps were shareware, and I had to learn DOS, when I was 7 to be able to play the games lol. Where did you manage to pick up that super clean, vintage machine? That has to be worth some serious paper stacks in 2021! Also, is that signature on the MPC from the same guy (Linn) who made the Linnstrument?
