I love my Pocket Operator ko.. but the Tonic is easily my most used Pocket Operator. Just to show its usefulness i make a dawless track utilizing drum samples from the Pocket Operator Tonic and sample them into my MPC 3000 to sequence the song.

yeah... we're gonna go ahead and need you to post more mpc 3000 content. 🙂
Yeah RICKY. No hold outs.
Shoe Engine totally agree ❗️
Ah que si tio !
But... but... burn building
Mhmmmm
Something about that old grey MPC aesthetic.
the greyisch look of the old Akai rack samplers always reminded me of scientific instruments, really liked that
Looks like a big cash register, with super sized numbers for those of us with bad sight :D.
@@FourTetTrack read somewhere someone said that they had a old mpc and an old lady thought they were a robber coz she thought MPC was a cash register lol
No joke it looks like this older device they used to have in air traffic control towers. Which I'm currently blanking on the name.
@@256k_ hahaha, I can completely believe that!!
IMO the mpc 3000 sequencer is one of the best and easiest sequencers ever made... thanks roger linn...
Not one of the best. Thee BEST! Although I hate the work flow, the sequence & sound are KING. I have every MPC!
Seeing the MPC close up is giving me PTSD flashbacks to my DPS-12. That one was a nightmare. Some poor bastard translated the manual into a human language. Oh yeah, I did the mistake of getting the FX expansion too. The guy at the store was like, "I can sell the expansion to you, but I can't help you with it. No one can."
A little over a year ago the Tonic was my first "toy" I've bought since my drum kit 11 years ago. Since then I've added 2 more P.O.s, Volca Keys, Reloop SPiN turntable and now the MPC One. Love this channel. 🤘
Came for the Pocket Operator, stayed for the MPC workflow :-)
Who could hate on your flow? You just created more music in 20 minutes than some of us in weeks, plus content for the channel, and happy accidents.
Bob Ross legend... peace, happy accidents 😀
MPC 3000: Copied by many, understood by very few.
I really like how you showed your creative flow. Thanks for posting!
So stoked for you on the 3000! Lookin forward to more MPC vids. 👌
Nice groove bro. I also felt that charging an extra 100 bucks for the software to use all the sound design possibilities of the PO-32 was a bit cheeky. But I bit the bullet, and seriously, it makes the sound pallet of that little thing IMMENSE. It's particularly the B knob, allowing you to morph between 2 sounds you've designed that sets it apart.
Amazing how hands on and fast the MPC workflow is. I used to make beats on Maschine and I grew to hate music software. Now i make my beats with an Alesis SR18 and an OP-Z together to a multitrack recorder and have never been happier. Yeah it can seem arcane but working with gear fills your grooves with happy accidents and gives you a kind of a “fuck it” attitude that is so freeing. You would’ve been messing with an EQ chart for 30 minutes in a DAW lol
Only time I use a Daw (Reaper) is for transfers and mixing. I can never use that bs for composition or recording. Production and tracking are done exclusively on hardware. MPC 2000 and a portastudio.
Diane V same. I just move the files to a DAW for EQ and minor mixing adjustments at the end
Did my internship as a music therapist last year with troubled teens that kinda drew me back to making beats and stuff. We started out on a laptop, but after a while I started to notice they had a lot of trouble staying focused and weren’t really connecting. Since my own interest was piqued I had gotten myself my first analog mono synth and a Groovebox, the latter which I took over a couple of times and was an instant hit. Not only was it easier to connect with these kids because we could work simultaneously on a single machine, they also were waaaaay more stimulated by having a tangible instrument with pads, knobs and dials by which they could explore a wide variety of sounds and completely lose track of time. Coming from playing mostly (bass) guitar, this was such an eye opener! So yeah, for all the possibilities and convenience you might have in software, there is much to be said for having a hardware instrument despite all its quirks and limitations.
I feel you to a certain extent - but you can work exactly the same way on machine for the most part, if you choose to. Coming from a 100% hardware background , I've made beats on maschine for a year and never experienced anywhere close to as fast of a workflow.
Dru Won yeah for sure Maschine has an amazing workflow and as much as hardware is great, tracking drum parts to isolate things like kick and snare can be a pain with drum machines. That’s why I’m having to use two drum machines. I’m experimenting with just doing beats on Maschine and tracking the rest as audio from gear next though.
Sounds incredible and to think its almost all from the Tonic! I got the KO after seeing your videos and have loved it since. If I hadn't just bought a digitakt I'd consider getting the tonic too just to have fun with that (I realize the Tonic is much cheaper before anyone comments but that's all I have to spend and once it shows up I know I'm going to be fully distracted by that lol). Love the jam you come up with and it always impresses me how quick you do it even if there were a few moments of frustration that's still a quick build for something so fun to hear and watch you make.
Mr. Oizo!
That jam is a keeper. I keep waiting for Gilles Peterson to come in and do a Worldwide ID "...something brand new from Ricky Tinez..."
Definitely Worldwide material!! ✊✊
Yeah - I could pretty much watch you make dope, grooving house beats all day long. Amazing as always - love the groove you cook up here! 😀 👊
lmaooo i enjoy the archaic workflow too. i gotta get my old 2000xl up and running again, i miss it like crazy
Was waiting for this video. Thanks for the great content dude.
Has that sweet sweet late 90’s house vibe! Love this groove man!
that MPC filter+ envelope works so good on raw chords like that
My friend gave me the speak for Christmas and I’ve been using the drum sounds from that because they’re so good and they’re based off the tonic- I might pick the tonic up too for all of the sounds
Yea! That’s a good way to get into it
hehe same, the PO-35 is the only one I have, bought it for the voice synthesis, but I use the tonic section more often, makes a lot of fun.
I love my tonic too, I had the vst before I got the tonic so I was really happy to have a hardware version of the software. I was getting tired of hearing and using the same drum sounds that everyone else uses in their music, the tonic is very refreshing.
The 32 with stock sound is by far one of the most versitile po's.
dude i bloody love this channel
Been interested in one if these bad boys for awhile! Love your videos man 👍
This is neat, Ricky. I'm not an MPC guy, but watching you work out on the machine, I totally 'get it'. Also makes sense how well the Tonic works with that.
Quality house in 10 mins
I don’t have any of this gear, I just love to watch. I spent a lot of time looking over the various models of the pocket operators, just couldn’t settle for stereo out only. But I’m getting closer.
Just plain fun. Great video!
As long as the process is fun ...enjoyed this video! Thanks
Love watching you work w this combo. Considering getting a tonic at some point in the future because it looks so fun and robust. Maybe for now i will try to find a tonic sample pack online. My main sampler right now is the sp606 and I love combining it with the monotron duo. Similar type of thing, super versatile little sound machine. Great video man 👍
The speed at which you find, record into, and start using a sample on the 3000 is mind blowing. Plus the speed of creating sequence variations and whatnot. I know you've been using this gear for a while now but there is definitely major workflow advantages of the MPC...
PO-32 and PO-33 are my favourites too. I use both alone, and also sometimes sample a 32 drum/-percussion set into the 33 sampler.
Cool sounds!
also, it's excellent for tracking, as you can arrange a whole song with unlimited pattern arrangement.
I saw this video and immediately copped an XR20 to use it like this. Great video!
As Shoe Engine said, we're gonna go ahead and need you to post more mpc xxx content.
I'm a mpc live user and seeing someone work on an mpc is, at least, inspiring. :)
I use a JJOS Black 1000 - I agree with ya.
.... and the Tracker.
Go, Ricky, go!
I have tha mpc 3000 limited edition still tha world's greatest sound ever,
Eyyy another pocket operator video!
Microtonic by Soniccharge is still one of the best drum plug-ins alive.
not much competition in that market but I'd say Drum Computer by Sugarbyte is #1
Great video! One quick tip. Before you start sequencing on the MPC 3000, assign the slider to the pad FIRST. You can chose (filter, decay, attack, pitch, etc). Once you record your sequence you can go back {AFTER} and make subtle changes with the slider while in overdub mode. Makes the loop really dynamic. It took me over a year to figure that one out. 🤦♂️ The manual was kind of vague on the use of the slider.
Yea finally figured this out haha. Suuuuuper pro tip! Thanks for sharing it Andrew!!
This is great stuff Ricky. Your workflow with the 3000 is magic. The 3000 may be limited on features compared to the later editions of the MPC but the workflow once you know it it's fast and the end results for me have a better feel. Please do more content with the 3000. You may force me to actually get one lol
I've had four different PO's--Tonic is the only one I've kept. MicroTonic VST is fantastic.
Same here! Microtonic Vst def worth buying!
Thank you because of this video I’m highly considering getting the tonic
Very dope track 🙌🏽
you have to do the same in ableton or any other daw as well. if you need to adjust the velocity, difference is you need to adjust it with a mouse and/or type or scroll in the right value, people seem to somehow always forget that. Somehow I prefer to do it the mpc way as well. So much satisfaction on the mpc. My favorite piece of kit in the entire studio hands down...
The tonic is great, I sync with a square lfo from the modular and run it through clouds.
Hi Rick! I've been binge watching your videos in the last month, you're an awesome creator
MPC + PO... this is too good!
good use of the 16 levels velocity function...my way to get a beat grooving on the mpc
Bruh you make me wanna get a mpc, the shit looks so therapeutic thanks for the content I loved it.
Bro, you just provide a huge point! You are not crazy! I think a lot of us have been! Seeing you use the MPC was ah-inspiring it reminded me of the first time I ever played with one. The speed in which you can tap into inspiration have instantaneous feedback and build a total Vive is still untouched. Technology has given us a lot of cool new toys but I still don’t think it matches what can happen on the MP. I repent. I have backslidden into the technology life of sin😂❗️ I’m gonna get a MP, ASAP😂‼️
when I use to own the 3000 , it held a special place in my heart it will do the same for you.
It's bumping!
Love this one!
Nice bro, the mpc 3000 is the goat of MPs, only one i kept after 20 years
Pretty good showing off video. I love the way this guy makes music.
This is awesome mate!...now I need a PO32 and an MPC 3000... :)
It's really fun to see your workflow in real time. The 3000 is definitely an acquired taste and a piece of history. I love your channel btw
Cool stuff dude!
The Tonic and the KO are definitely the two best PO's.
Just bought one of these off your affiliate link on another vid. Thanks for all the info on these things!
Wow u sure are quick & efficient on the 3K! I wanna be like u lol! I’ve been wanting one for 13yrs now & will finally get it! (Former 2K XL & REN user). 💪🏾
Great video man , thanks !! Stay safe!
would love to have one 3000!!! nice video
When I'm put on hold , I want this in my ear .
that's def a vibe!
You remind me why i love to use mpc.
Inspiration man.
Banger just like that
very nice thoughts on the POs, my favorite is the Arcade cause of it's low pass filter and I can just plug in the Rick and Morty PO to it as slave and get funky with the filter this way rather than having to play the Arcade sounds all the time
Dopest video to date ! All the new gear is good and nice but only when sampled into the mpc it becomes music.
So dope!!
So this is how they make that music that is playing when I go in a club after playing a gig. Very enlightening
Bro where did you get that LCD screen from? I need to change mine and your looks clean af!
Well done sir!
My man! Appreciate that, big appreciation to you for teaching me a ton and inspiring me to continue creating 🙏🏽
MPC 3000 awesome🔥🔥🔥
Can't even hate fam that beat was fire!
sampling tonic + 12bit =
I love my tonic so much. crazy fm drum sounds (y)
It’s amazing
Nice man !!!
sick. what a rad retro piece of kit to know inside out and to jam to. Sounds awesome t o be honest (14:00).
The Mpc 3000 is my favorite, I use Mpc Live just because there is less wires and loading floppy’s was super whack, but when the mpc 3000 was on I usually kept it on for bout 4-5 hours And I dont think any machine can make drums knock in a warm punchy way like the good ol 3G.
You can assign filter cuttoff to the slider.
What a delicious and meticulous machine.
Soooo cool
God damn that's a beautiful machine. As a PC nerd it gives me such nostalgic vibes
How do you feel about the Korg Volca series?
(Apologies if you've already addressed that gear this is my first video of yours)
also Ian Pooley uses his 3000 for all his work. telekom electronic beats made a 2 video series on him and his MPC
Dope !
Supa Fresh!!!!!!!
Great Demo Ricky!!! I Love EM Making, I saw Kraftwerk in the 80' Live in Wash., DC Sir. Your Beat making skills are as great as "A NINJA MASTER!" Stay Safe - Peace
Well that was fun
Hey...I'm always a fan of the Mpc line. You're use of it is on point. The track developed well. Keep on producing!
yeah thats cookin
There s nothing like hardware, i like to build chords and grooves on the maschine or ableton push but I sample everything to my samplers or to my MPC 5000
great vid
Yeah buddy! Have you gone thru full making of a track in any video? I'd be interested to see you take the jam from your MPC, bring it into Ableton and edit into a proper track...
Man, seeing those floppies reminds me of the very first computer my dad bought in the early 90's. All of the apps were shareware, and I had to learn DOS, when I was 7 to be able to play the games lol. Where did you manage to pick up that super clean, vintage machine? That has to be worth some serious paper stacks in 2021! Also, is that signature on the MPC from the same guy (Linn) who made the Linnstrument?
