I just freaking love your videos. The way you film them is different from the others. Way of placing the camera (filming screen and not screencasting), seeing your reflection, it all together feels like I'm sitting right next to you. You know, like friends home jam session. It makes you think about all this new software and hardware in a such more relaxed way. You're are great dude, cuckoo!

Wanna have some fun? Do this:
    1) Whichever drum patches saved to your PO-32 currently, select sounds 1-8 twisting the morph knob all the way left for each sound. It's quick because once you select the next pad, the knob will practically already be in place. And I forgot to add: put the pitch, dial A, into the center position, say 4 bars, for each of the same pads
    2) Open microtonic desktop. Slide Morph fader all the way to the LEFT. Open a preset, construct or save a kit, or load in each patch for each pad.
If you're like me, try loading a preset that comes with a kit and patterns.
    3) Optimize the order of the pads on MT by dragging the lanes up and down in the full-view sequencer. Better results than the "Optimize for PO-32" option, but you could press that button instead on the transfer interface if you prefer. When this window is open, MT will give you a preview of what the pattern will sound like, voice stealing and all, on the PO-32.
Sub kicks, for example, should not really be on pad 5 because it'll end up belonging to the same voice assignment as your main kick. I save subs to pad 8. Otherwise, it's 1=kick, 2=snare, 3=closed HH, 7=Open HH. And you have some leniency with the other pads, perhaps a tom or bass tone on 5, a clap on pad 6.
Just because a pattern doesn't use all the pads, don't just order them as the first handful of pads, unless one is clearly muted due to it being in an init state or something like that. You might go back and use those other pads for other patterns after all, or you might just enjoy playing the full kit on your PO-32
    4) Transfer all the sounds and pattern to buttons 1-8 and pattern 1, or transfer all patterns 1-4 if you have some patterns already in place on MT.
    5) Put Write button in perf mode on PO-32 so you can freely adjust the morph dial for each pad 1-8, and now turn each one fully clockwise. (If you're in edit mode, you'll be literally rewriting the default morph position for that related pattern, and you'd need to be holding the write button down to alter the morph dial for each pad. Not what we want to commit to in this example.)
    6) Go back to microtonic desktop. Slide Morph fader all the way to the RIGHT. Open a preset, construct or save a kit, or load in each patch for each pad.
    7) Repeat steps 3 and 4. That is, transfer the sounds to the same top buttons 1-8. If you loaded in a different pattern entirely with this other kit, save these additional pattern(s) to pad 9 or 5-8 as examples, so you ultimately can give yourself an even number of patterns per kit. Which leads us to the tip:
Now the morph dial on the PO-32 will transform between the two kits you created on microtonic. They didn't even need to be related to each other, and you didn't even need separate buttons for 2 patches. Any patterns you transferred will automatically recall the morph position you positioned them in, hard counter-clock, and clockwise. You could repeat this for transfers to pads 9-16, essentially saving 4 kits to PO-32 with room for 4 patterns each. I like to pack a bunch of patterns that have a similar tempo, even if they were saved as separate presets with separate kits.
Also, the patterns will be remembered in their morph position, although it may not show it in performance mode. That is, the first row as I've set it up will be the first kit, the 2nd row the 2nd kit, etc. If you want to play a different kit over the current pattern, you'd still need to adjust the dials in performance mode.

Hey Cuckoo! Love this video! So i am buying the PO-32 and Microtonic, and i'm planning on buying a Volca later to go with it for a (kinda) portable set up. Right now i am looking at the Keys and FM. Which one would suit it better? I mostly want to make mellow hip hop and would like some "spacey" sounds. I know they use a different kind of synthesis but for me it comes down to the sound. Thanks in advance! (sorry for my english i'm from Slovakia)

Hi Cuckoo! I'm wondering which Pocket Operator to get, PO-20 or PO-32. I know it's difficult to give a general recommendation, but which one have you had the most fun with? I'm looking for a small device to use on my patio in the summer. I already have plenty of synths and drum machines, for example Digitakt, OP-1, Volcas and Roland Airas. I love making beats, which PO-32 seems to be best at, but I also want something that can make more complete "songs", which points me at the PO-20. Do I simply need both?

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  Před 7 lety +7

+ProQdev ha ha. The 32 is undoubtedly the most serious instrument, with the most depth. but without the software Microtonic you really can't explore the depth. It's a simple but versatile and great sounding engine. The 20 is great with the chord progression and side chain chords etc, but the sounds and expressions are limited to this one kind of style. If you're happy with that, it's plenty fun.

  • @MrAndo

Hey cuckoo, your videos made me fall in love with the pocket operators and i'd like to get one now, but I can't decide which one to get between the arcade and the tonic. I love the arcade sounds, but it's kinda limiting genre speaking while the tonic seems more versatile but it's also more expensive and I don't think i will be able to get microtonic as well (don't have much of a budget). Which one would you recommend?

Hi there. Quick question for you Cuckoo - I was already a big PO-32 fan, then recently bought the Microtonic software, and, WOW. The sonic range of this little wonder is now mind-blowing. Some of the best fun to be had is playing the fx live. But now my taste for tweaking has been tempered, I was wondering if there is a way to tweak the fx? Or indeed install totally new ones? Because that would be awesome.

There are so many comments! I still read most, but I don’t reply to everything. And sometimes I just forget to reply.
The FX part is locked, and cannot be changed. It’s actually tweaking the synthesis engine in real-time. They are not audio processing effects like on most other Pocket Operators.

Great Video. I have some doubts about the hardware and the concept though.. No stereo output, if you want to Sync to another device? Only three bpm options? Pay another 99USD and use a computer just to be able to actually access the versatile sound engine? Ridiculously expensive accessories? It's a refreshingly different take on hardware design, but not a great value. For playing around i'd rather use an iPad App.

what if in mircotonic you worked on all your presets from the center morph position, then adjusted the changes in the A and B position, then moved the morph position back to center before saving. Wouldn't you only need to save the preset once, rather than twice, in order to capture all the differences between A and B?
You'd still need to remember to put the morph fader into the center position before loading a preset again, or it would place the preset in whichever position you had last left the morph fader.
Also, if you load that same preset again without remembering to put the morph dial into the center, wouldn't you run the risk of going beyond the parameter range of the PO-32 when you transfer the preset?
Finally, will the PO-32 remember the position of the morph dial when the preset is imported. In other words, if the morph is in the center on microtonic, will the morph fader be in the center for each patch?

Hello, thanks for the cool video Cuckoo. Can someone tell me, do pocket operators feature pattern cuing or does it change pattern as soon as you select the next pattern so you have to time it? The PO 32, 33 and 34 all look sick.

They do, at least PO-33 (it's the only one I've got so far). It switches to a new pattern after the current one ends. And as long as you hold the `pattern` button you can queue up to 128 patterns (i.e. one pattern can be queued multiple times). But after you release the button I don't think you can add to the queue.

Why I can't use the keyboard of my Mac while I am using Microtonic? I mean, I need to select between the numbers 1 and 8 with the mouse instead of with the keyboard, and it's a mess 'cause it's slowly if I want to see how all the buttons work and at the same time I need to use the mouse to pick up the number of the drums noise. Thanks !!

Hey Cuckoo! Just bought this beautiful thing and your tutorial was awesome! Quick question though, what hardware would you recommend for a beginner like me to use to connect to the 32? Something I could make some sweet melodies with, like you did during the sync demonstration. Thanks!

+Obie hey Obie! It would be sweet with something small like the OP-1, but cheaper.. hm.. you could buy a small USB keyboard to your phone, and play some nice apps like that, if you wanna keep it on the cheap side?

Thanks for the reply! I'm definitely looking at the OP-1 especially after seeing you use it and seeing what can be done with it. It is a bit on the pricier side but I'm looking for a used one around Stockholm right now, a bit scarce here though! Some apps on an iPad might be cool also, I'm gonna keep looking but yeah at the moment the OP-1 is looking really nice. Hope to see you in Stockholm for a gig soon! :)

Could I possibly replicate the sets on any of the other POs in Microtonic and put them in the PO-32? Say I want to play with the Robot or Arcade sounds. I know they have different purposes but I want to know if the PO-32 is the best one to buy if you wanna play around with all kinds of music style.

+Aleixo Teixeira the PO-32 has a powerful but pretty easy to grasp multi purpose drum synthesis engine. But you can only make sounds yourself if you have he Microtonic software.. You can replicate many digital synth sounds, but the tonality is made for drums, so it doesn’t have the same strength for arpeggios and chords and stuff. I enjoy to mix tuned sounds and drum sounds. It’s a cool engine.

just a question: i would buy the po 20 arcade, i like it for its samples, but then i found all the samples ripped from a po 20 and ready to be imported on the po 32. So my question is: should i buy the po 20? or should i buy the po 32 importing the arcade samples? In this last option i could also import different sounds of other musical styles i like, this is why it sounds goods to me. Which would be the difference from a po 20 arcade and a po 32 with arcade sounds imported? maybe could i lose some features in the second option? thanks!

Great little machine and nice performance as well. It's possible to mute the single drum sounds on the PO-32?

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  Před 7 lety +1

+Pascal Augner thanks! Yeah I forgot to show mute and solo. Sound+(1-16) will solo the sound. During playback press and hold any key (1-16) to mute that vertical channel strip. So you can mute a whole channel of four sounds.

hey cuckoo. quick question. If I download new set of sounds how can I back to my settings? is my factory settings gone forever? Or is there an option to download new pattern of sounds to - for example pattern 2 and still have sounds on pattern one - factory settings ??

i love my pocket operators but I find that tying the PO-32 to a piece of expensive software is a real kicker.. If anything it makes me want to sell the PO-32 and buy the PO-33 which is everything the 32 should have been..
