I have forsaken all other hobbies in the pursuit of pocket operator collecting.
yea! my operators are also on the way! can`t wait!!!
Can anyone tell me the difference between the different pocket operators and how many of them there is?
@Vismund Same man, I got EXACTLY the ones you got haha. I'm contemplating on getting this one too so I can have a full small studio with me. A synthesizer, a drum machine and a sampler.
Desperadow i don't remember the exact number but less than 10. you should look into each one and see which features you need or like the most. each one has a different role and purpose. the speak for example is used to record voice and manipulate it, the sub is for bass sounds, the KO is a sampler (like the MPC3000 for hip hop) etc...
they are not exactly restricted to that, you can do a lot with each pocket operator. but some have some features others don't so it depends.
@@GrumpyStormtrooper I'd probably get the KO for versatility, thanks man!
Good to see (hear) that they actually added sooo much valuable functionality in such a small device. The mute, accent and fx really makes it a beast on its own. I totally see why it is a bit more expensive.
and it's a marvel of engineering. go check out cuckoo's interview with magnus, the creator of the device. it's awesome to hear him talking about how he squeezed it in there. brilliant fellow.
I must say that this is by far one of the most useful introduction/tutorial videos I have ever seen. Thank you!
Thank you for introducing me to the OP-1 and the PO's. It's a life-changer for me, as I am becoming more serious about synths and music making than I ever have been before. I will continue to support you with views for years to come. :)
Yay! Thank you!
This is an excellent introduction. Thank you so much for posting this.
"Play button plays the pattern" welp, you've made yourself another name for a channel
oh shit
I just ordered the PO-33 KO and the PO-14 Sub. It seems like so much creative potential for under 150 bucks!
"Add extra performance to your performance?" - Jeremy Blake 2017
Q U O T E A B L E
Yo I heard you like performance so we put some performance on your performance.
You're laughing now but let's see how you like those numbers after your performance review.
did you know that jeremy is the most performance performance that ever performanced?
Man this is such a step-up from the PO-12. Even the chokes and mutes alone make it so much better...
Agreed!
can't wait for the micro tonic video!!
i love the animations on these things
Yes! Finally! Great Vid!!Now Trying to get my hands on one is proving to be difficult!
This video came just at the right time, my sample/library content HDD decided to throw a wobbler and i thought i'd lost everything, thankfully i have a backup, so working my way through this and all the other videos i haven't seen yet on your channel while i rebuild the content. thanks for another great video, Jeremy.
nice! though, sorry to hear about your HD dying. that really sucks.
Cheers bro, after 8 hours everything seems ok :)
NIce and concise, the best part is we can actually made a little tune with your video!!!
great lighting btw, video looks nice and colors too 👌
I actually love the editing on this video
thank you matty!
Excellent video, thank you, much appreciated : )
10:42 forward sounds so good!
Martin Shewfelt true
I have the volca Sampler and the Electribe Sampler Mk 2. I still want this. All the Pocket Operators have different dynamics that the aforementioned don't. I have 3 PO's. ❤❤❤
Bloody hell Jeremy you are brilliant
Superb video.
I love this specific pocket operator. It has a dark side the others dont
this is so ominous i love it
Megaman is my favorite still that high lead one with the delay I think it's sound no 7? Is incredible. The fun part is the limitations of the scale you are on. So you can't just feel it out and improv and expect to be able to hit whatever. Half steps are missing all over the place lol.
Cool kit as i been using Micro Tonic since it came out. Enter Santa-man.
I just love these vids soo much :o
Ikr
Dammit I love this guy. His drink a beer with rating is outstanding!
Wow,this sold me
good stuff !!!
Have you sync'd this to the OP1 or Electribe yet or plan to? please
I have not. I don't own an Electribe, and I generally don't see a reason for me personally to sync it to the OP-1. I understand it's totally possible, though!
I own both. Let me know if I can answer any questions.
Hey guys,
I made a Po-32 Tonic Drum Preset available on FREE DOWNLOAD:
instagram.com/pierrelabret/
enjoy! feedbacks welcome!
What pocket operator do you like the best? I'm looking into buying one
I'm the operator with my pocket calculator
Yees
Kraftwerk?????
By pressing a special key, it plays a melody
Aren't you ever tempted to break off that tab at the top? It looks like it's begging to be snapped.
only when i get a case for it
True, but you do know that’s the write-protect tab, right? Break it off and basically you can only listen and never make edits. (And also, you can’t undo this.)
@@super-ulitka Oh. I thought he was talking about the small one on the left of the display
Hey there! Great video :D Maybe I got something wrong but accent + sound isnt really a mute button. If you press the sound he play the sound once with accent and then the choke happens.
Great Pocket Operator though
gotta collect them all!
crazy, more functionality than a drumbrute lol.
Is it possible to save patterns that you've created? Or does one need to record it in a DAW first or something
Changes to a pattern are saved automatically. You can back up your data by exporting to an audio file.
Sounds super daft punk-y (well homework at least) :D I love it
Hi, i have the Po-33 and im looking for a drummachine. What is the best choice? Po-32, Po-12 or korg volca beats?
Coen T I have the same question.
Nice tencho at the end ;)
TENCHO
nozaihaus techno x 10
Would you recommend getting the silicone cases? They're a bit pricey but I don't know whether these things aren't too fragile without a case.
+Ideennot yes, I would. They really help it feel more substantial which can lead to confidence when playing it.
11:49 BURNIN IT
Quick! Everyone comment before you watch the video!
Fennerett AH WHAT DO I SAY???
I think I really was first this time!
Daniel Brunner You were, I was second!
Fennerett fuck, i failed
Why isn't there something like a Pocket Operator cartoon music video, where all the crazy ways of sound visualization come together?
Would be a pretty fucked up movie probably xD
that is an awesome idea
Red Means Recording I will be waiting and hoping for this!
Thx, this would be so awesome!!
Peter Hammel its been 8 months has anybody done it? 😂 i Really wanna see that
I want to make dark/deep techno and would like to use one of the POs either Tonic or Rhytm. Which one would you recommend me that would fit the style with its sound palette? Considering that I wont use Microtonic.
Neither is going to get you a very large tonal palette, honestly. I would recommend the PO-32 if you were going to get Microtonic, but without it you're just going to have the stock sounds. I think the PO-32 is more "techno" than the PO-12, but you're going to want to pair either one with at least something making bass sounds.
THANKS!
i want to chose one of the "PO" products but i dont know which one. Is this one best for a begginer?
nice vid som
It's nice to see how far you have come, I just remembered how insecure you sounded in some of your older videos. And now look at you! No nervosity, clear editing, a strong voice and even some funny parts :)
Well done Jeremy, now I fancy this darn machine... I would like to buy it, but Microtonic is simply not worth it for me at the moment. What about the rumors about the limited polyphony though? I thought the Tonic is going to have 16 notes of polyphony, but in some discussion panels people claim that the Tonic only sports 4 note polyphony? Thank you for clearing this up :P
Huh! I haven't heard about the polyphony thing! Butttt, if you think about it makes sense. In the video I go over "choke groups", which means you can't have more than one of the pads in a 4 verticle group playing at once. That means, yes, only 4 polyphony, I guess.
Isn't the insecurity part of Jeremy's humour? Watch his studio tour, it's still there ;)
Restrictions make you work harder or smarter ;) I find having less makes your creativity juices flow more.
Absolutely
halcyondaystunes I always tell people that the smaller the box is, the easier it is to think outside of it
Would you prefer this over rhythm for the drums?
"Swing" sold
If I’m looking for a drum oriented PO to add to an arcade and a robot, would you recommend the tonic (without the vst) or the rhythm? What are the strengths of each one as a drum machine?
i would recommend the rhythm for sure, hands down
Between this and the PO12, which will you choose function wise?
If you plan on getting Microtonic, PO-32 all the way. If you don't it tougher. I like the effects in the PO-32 better, but the PO-12 is nice and solid too.
awesome review!
can u solo multiple sounds at the same time?
i dunno, haven't tried!
What is the microphone used for? I bought a couple of these recently and love them but can't seem to figure out the microphone
12:20 this is so awesome
keeping really good beats is not easy.. now Time is changing for many people. do the good thing for everybody
Hey Jeremy weird question -- where did you get the cutting mat you're shooting on top of? Mine is shot and I'm looking for a new neutral dark one like that :P Thanks for the great videos!
Alvin GBM2436
@@RedMeansRecording Thanks so much man!
Very cool.
+tombX live act techno berlin thanks!
you got really good there. How long before you got it all figured out?
About a week. The PO series isn't that hard to suss to begin with, and if you've used any of them, the interface is extremely similar between them.
Hey Jeremy, I stumbled across your channel while I was looking at some trippy synthalicious tunes and I love what your doing man! You've convinced me to bite the bullet and finally buy myself my first wee synth machine and give it a go! So my question is, I was thinking of losing my synth virginity to the po-32, I like the seemingly all roundedness of this one compared to the others? But I thought I'd ask a pro before pulling the trigger
If you plan on getting MicroTonic to transfer sounds to it, then yeah, the PO-32 is going to be the most robust option.
Red Means Recording honestly I probably won't be investing in MicroTonic. Would you say then its kind of redundant getting the po32? I see you really like th arcade and robot PO's,I really just want one that will give me most flexibility in creating the fullest possible tracks or sounds.
robot, factory, or arcade, then
Red Means Recording thanks a lot man I appreciate your words of wisdom.
This is awesome! What would you recommend as the best choice for my first PO? I was wondering if I could play with these things and make EDM-ish sounds (with focus on bass and melody, I guess) with them. I don't know what to get first, though. I was thinking of the sub but I heard it's pretty limited compared to the robot? or should I get the tonic first?
If you get the tonic I would suggest you invest in the Microtonic VST as well, so you can make all new crazy sounds for the Tonic.
thanks! I'll keep that in mind. in your opinion though, which one is the best as a standalone? it might take a while (months, probably) for me to get a second one. and although they're all cheap, tonic's more expensive than the others, I think?
Robot, Factory, Arcade
But to be clear: EDM is not what these do. They're all very much firmly in the chiptune camp.
hmm. now I'm torn between robot and factory. and sub. so in all of these, you can record a drum sequence, then put/record melody (or is it bass?) over it, then put another melody on top of it? or can you only put two layers and one live?
11:25 THIS WAS SO COOL
Please, how do I change individual sample volume levels?? Thanks!!
Such unique style of video. Don't be surprised when you see people trying to copy you! Just like Casey lol
For better or worse, there are a few people that already do.
TechForYou ha casey that's good
Whats with the hanger thing on top? Does it snap off? Do ppl leave this on so they can resell them when they get bored of these things?
So I could get this thing to do sampling in Live if I wanted?
That's a neat device. I've got no clue about anything musical but you really explained it well! What's the point in the display surely something functional would be more useful?
The company that makes it is as much about design as they are function. Most of their UI is in some way obfuscated or strange, but always engaging.
man, this thing looks better everytime I see it. makes me feel sad to look at my po12.
I want to do a jam with them and the sub. I think it would be awesome.
That horse head woman scared the HELL out of me ! got minez for work ( they won't leave you alone If you have any thing other then an iPad ) got to be pound 4 pound the best groove box - had no idea
i like the play button the best, amazing.
So can these pocket things be used standalone without additional software.
Yes
Awesome. Can you copy between pattern banks (or something similar) ?
Sure can.
teenage.engineering/guides/po-32/en
hold write + pattern and press 1-16 to paste the active pattern to the corresponding new slot.
I see. Yeah I guess you can easily save a pattern into two slots (and edit from their). Cheers for the link.
What do you think of the lock function? I'm new to synths in general but I'm looking at the PO systems as a cheap way to test the waters
+Sahil Dhaliwal the lock function?
Red Means Recording the tab on the the left of the screen can be broken off to write protect all the patterns permanently. I only was able to figure that out from reading the user guides
I think the lock function is an interesting novelty.
Thanks for the replies man, ever since I saw your last op-1 video on reddit, I've been studying synths nonstop and have decided to try doing my game soundtrack on my own. Are the pads easy to press down on these? I'm looking to get one to start with and am looking at the sub, arcade, and the tonic to test the waters
Yes, the pads are easy to press down.
I think if you really want to do game soundtrack stuff you might want to look into software. It will be infinitely more easy to create complex melodies and actual songs. There are many plugins and packs available to make those classic NES / SEGA sounds.
These videos are always dope. Do you ever do live performances with these outside of your videos?
i don't :( i should find a way to do so.
This looks cool although I find the screen extremely confusing. Wish there was more...actual information on it? 😅
"We have incredibly limited screen space. Let's put cartoons on it."
trust me youll get used to it (my po 20 has a ruined screen and i can still use it :))
For what it is, I guess its actually pretty cool!
4:45 “alright about130”
*sees 131, pauses*
Deeeeep sigh of ocd
Would the PO-20 pair nicely with the PO-32 or should I look at getting a different one if I'm only going to have two to start? Great videos!
I think those would pair nicely.

The only slight disappointment I had with this device is that the pattern chain maxes out at 64 which, don't get me wrong, is still better than the 16 limit that the first gen had but not as long as the 128 that the second gen POs had.
64 seems like plenty and for straight up grooves it is quite a lot but I found it to tap out when trying to do a full song's worth of variations. Anyways, only minor gripe because this unit had less pattern chain length than the 3 PO's that came before it. BUT... They are working with such a small amount of processing power and memory though so it's honestly astounding what this drum machine is capable of for its size.
If the Tonic came in a larger box and had multiple outputs and midi, it would be a $700 machine. And it would be worth it.
Nice video. Well explained.
I would love a big-boy Tonic. That would be amazing.
Have you watched Cuckoo's video with Magnus about how he made the PO-32? His explanation of the processing limitations was really interesting, and explains why some corners were (barely) cut.
That video is very inspiring. Super cool dude being interviewed by another super cool dude.
Maybe we'll get a sampler in the future.
They've raised the bar so much with the Tonic, I'm super excited to see what happens next.
Dude, the opz is exactly what a super tonic is... just get it...
This seems amazing! I kinda want one just for fun... but I dont know about that price, I mean the sounds are great but 100$ + shipping is a lot...
no explanation needed. do it quickly!
I'm thinking of buying a couple of POs which would you recommend?
+Count_Ernie progamerlikeaboss whichever ones sound cool to you. Rhythm, Arcade, Factory, Robot are all good first choices.
Red Means Recording Thanks (ps I love your vids!)
I'd say Tonic, Sub & Robot
You're gonna want the bass that the Sub can add to round out your grooves and the Rhythm is great but the Tonic is just a bit better and more versatile.
Robot is the best. you have three channels of sound, meaning you can have a basic drum track, a sequenced pattern, and live play on top of it. I found you can make fleshed out songs with it just by itself.
if you're buying more than one I would say arcade + robot is a very good pairing; rhythm is good with everything; factory and sub are okay but a bit harsh sounding (and limited to 16 pattern chaining - the robot can do 128); and office I would just avoid.
theycallmejpj I've seen a lot of people doing robot - arcade jams and that is the sound that got me interested in poket operator's, I'm just not sure about how much drums I could have (if that makes any sense )
Does it save what you do or is everything lost when you turn the machine off?
so whats the diffrence with the drum machine in speak?
Pretty much this and the K.O. And any other one and you’re set
6:10 - "the cello song" - the books ft. jose gonzales
Noob reporting in. This looks like fun. I have some questions.
What is a groovebox?
What is a VST?
What is microtonic?
What is step sequencing?
What is swing?
What is parameter locking?
Google it
I have the po-33 but I’m trying to get my hands on a po-32
What's the range of sounds you can put on this? Could you put piano or guitar sounds?
You can put whatever you can make using Microtonic.
so good, it's fucking bonkers
YAY
which is more "fun" to you? the Arcade or the Tonic?
As a standalone: Arcade. If you plan on investing in Microtonic, Tonic.
Would you still recommend a PO 20 over this?
+Marcelo García Marín different beasts for different things.
Ohhh just 1 kit at a time. I have the ko, megaman, and 137 and so I was trying to use the sound button thr standard way. Lol I was like "the fuck it turns to write mode?" LOL well thanks for this I got a lot of learning to do still. The speak/Rick one has me a tad mystified too but I'm starting to get it now that I'm over recording horribly offensive phrases and playing them through various filters etc.
do i understand it correctly that you get the microtonic vst "for free" with it? so could i use the vst in my other ableton related productions?
You do not
@@RedMeansRecording oh i see, thanks!
Do you know how 2 add bass because I want to do some covers of songs
bLuE HeEaDeD mAgNeNt sound number 9 is a really good bass sound
is it possible to record something and hook it up to logic to sample? if so will be buying this
it has an audio out. you need to record the audio coming out of it.
Red Means Recording good with me :) thanks for the response ordering one now
just a question: i would buy the po 20 arcade, i like it for its samples, but then i found all the samples ripped from a po 20 and ready to be imported on the po 32. So my question is: should i buy the po 20? or should i buy the po 32 importing the arcade samples? In this last option i could also import different sounds of other musical styles i like, this is why it sounds goods to me. Which would be the difference from a po 20 arcade and a po 32 with arcade sounds imported? maybe could i lose some features in the second option? thanks!
The PO20 is made with a specific interface to use it's sounds. If you like the PO20, get the PO20.
ok so if i'll transfer the same sounds to the po 32 which will be the difference? only the interface? i don't aleady get the po 20 because it seems pretty limited if compared to the po 32, or not?
the po-20 has controls for chords and transposition and specific effects that are unique to it
you will not have those on the po-32
ok thanks for the explanation :)
