- Officially released at NAMM 2018, the new PO-33 K.O! is a sampler pocket operator. In this deep review and tutorial we're focusing on the sampling aspect of PO33 K.O and how it sounds. Well be having a look at how recording, editing, copying and pasting sounds and samples works. We'll also be playing around with the effects in the FX section and check out the new slot structure for the drum and melodic sections.
I've packed this video full to the brim with music made with external and internal sounds and samples. Want to hear all of the different effects? Then you're in luck because they're all in there including all factory patterns and sounds.

:3 3 connected. 😅💀😎🎹🤝🔥✊🎶 I wonder how it'll work with connecting various midi stuff together.
When I got my PO-32 (as soon it was released) I realized TE were on the way to produce a PO sampler. Next step was selling my Volca sample. TE don’t disappoint!
Just bought mine a week ago, it's my very first (not technically a synth, but kinda is) piece of hardware i've ever owned. It is truly a gem, and the the samples are amazing that come with it, sounds so original like nothing you could really find anywhere else. Beautiful design, and a wonderful instrument. I hope they never stop making them, TE is a great company. Your channel has the best tutorials I could honestly find that gives you a legit visual explanation, thank you.
Already ordered one!! I am so freaking stoked!
Just yesterday my first PO arrived in the mail: PO-14 Sub. I love it, and imagine pairing it with the PO-33 will be so nice!
Great video, Jakob. Your jam bits are especially inspirational!
Oh man you were the person who made these patches!! That's epic man
I just ordered this little beast. I'm sure this tutorial will come in handy once it arrives. Thank you!
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you!
This is my go-to resource channel whilst learning the PO series. Excellent production.
Great vid and very detailed. Best po-33 vid on CZcams.
Aw Thank you very much! 👊🏼
@@JakobHaq This is the only mention I've seen of the note-length (melody) and triplet mode (drum) tips I've seen. Thank you!
Dude!!! That’s so dope that you produced some of the sample patterns! I love the PO-33 and just picked up a PO-35. Can’t wait for it! Thanks for your informative videos!👍🏾🙏🏾
You are BRILLIANT!
Very informative and fun too!
That’s dope!🔥🙌🏾 congrats on the beta testing...I’m jelly. Sounds so awesome
Love this little box, I know I'm still getting an SP but this looks so fun, I find it funny having a massive jungle break coming out of this tiny thing. Realtime FX look like an awesome performance tool.
I love the chopping functionality. Similar to how the OP-1 works. I'm definitely getting this one.
Thanks for this detailed video, it clarifies many things for me.
you droped this king 👑
YESSSSS. So excited right now. This is gonna go great with the Tonic. Congrats on going down in Pocket Operator history, man.
Thank you! 👊🏼🔥
I just received mine today and it's awesome. You did a great job on the patterns :D I like your last one the most (in slot 16).
So stoked , just got mine. Dope vid homie.
Yes I have. The Po20 and the PO28. Perfect for chip tunes.
Finally! I thought the Tonic was pretty neat but this is what I was waiting for.
Your dub tune with the tonic, ko and speak is lovely, I could listen to that.
I learned a lot from this video. Like the audio only starts recording when a sound is detected. That panic trying to sample and record at the same time was tricky
Perfect explanatory video 😎
One of most comprehensive tutorials to date
Thank you! I’m really happy that you find my my video useful! 👊🏼
Awesome! I just ordered one! 🤘🏾
Great tune at 14:40! Great tutorial!
Thank you very much Jakob great review I’ve just ordered mine. 🙂
My pleasure! Have fun with the 33 when it arrives!
well deserved, you slay the PO
Thank you! 🔥
I should’ve subbed to you a long time ago bro. I’ve seen so many of your videos. It just hit me how cool you were. Best wishes man!
Thank you! 👊🏼😊

Great video❤ A must for new users.
Congrats Jakob, sounding great, I am tempted to get one of these
Aw, thanks Stuart! 👊🏼 The new metal series (32/33/35) are the top pocket operators in my opinion.
Nice behind the scenes peak.
You're a pro my friend! thanks a bunch!
I have a PO-33 and thanks for this video and patterns :)
OOOOOH I can't wait to get one, loving my trusty Tonic.
Tonic is killer!
Fantastic info. Thanks for the video.
My pleasure and thank you for watching! =D
You made the coolest patterns on the ko, thanks :D
Aw thank you so much! 👊🏼
I ordered one today, before watching or even knowing about this video, aND NOW I CANT WAIT EVEN LESS GIVE ME IT *I NEED IT!!!*
nice job Jakob~ I finally had enough points on amazon and got my PO-33 last week. It's so cool awesome job on the patterns and also this video!
Thanks Maria! 💛
Brilliant tutorial 😀thankyou🐂💨💨💨
superb tutorial
Thank you, I'm happy you found my video useful! 👊🏼
I swear, Korg needs to take a page from their book. Remember how the Volca sample had no line in?
I love the Volca Sample but being able to feed samples into it in real time like the PO33 and the relationship would progress to marriage and making babies!:)
Exactly if only the volca sample could sample. Having a line in. OMG how powerful would it be
:3 3 connected. 😅💀😎🎹🤝🔥✊🎶 I wonder how it'll work with connecting various midi stuff together.
Just ordered mine!
Amazing!
Thanks for you work and effort 🖖👽
My pleasure! Happy you enjoyed the video!
I'm thinking of buying this ain't had much look with po,s but I love samplers
I finally ordered one. Looking forward to trying out your presets :)
Great job, Jakob. Nice to hear that you were one of the testers. You are one of the best out there. 💪
Aw thank you so much! Being a tester also gave me ample time to really prepaid for the videos. Making a video like this isn't something Done quickly. Happy you enjoyed the videos!
Jakob Haq i can believe that it takes lots of time to do something like this. The quality of this is suberb in information and production vise.
That's slick as hell that you have patents with the 33.
I agree with the comments below, best po-33 vid on CZcams. Thanks
Thank you so much! 💙🙏🏼
yo, my bro, the videos pro! I bet you know, but, WAY TO GO!
woa, amazing and excitant tutorial. cheers
Thank you so much! I’m happy you enjoyed the video! 👊🏼
Great video fella! I ordered both the 33 and the 35 to complete the collection and fulfill the addiction. Yer vids are helping ease the wait on that “never gonna come” shipping notification. 😂
😂 Well I hope you get them home soon! 👊🏼
I neeed this!!
Your voice reminded me to some PSone videogame tutorial for some reason hahaha. Really nice video!
It's been a couple of years since I got another Pocket Operator. So - just ordered one of these. Can't wait. I'm a gonna sample the smack out of everything :)
Jakob, your videos are remarkably well done, and your speaking os clear and concise. I've seldom seen an instructional video that organized all the information so well. I rather wish TE had put all this in the user guide, but hey, you've done it so well I'll turn to you. I own the PO 12, 20, 32 (and microtoniq) and finally the 33.
I might as well mention here that I've discovered that I can use my metronome, a Korg MA-1, to provide a sync track, so I don't need to use a PO as a sync master at all. The Korg, which I bought for about $10, has headphone out, and several sounds you can select for your beat, and at least one of them will provide a sync beat to the POs. I've tried starting, stopping and changing the tempo with it also and it has worked. So try that sometime!
This is such a thorough, instructive and helpful vid, so many thanks and much appreciated! After watching this and another couple of vids on the PO-33 I am now really convinced that I should get one. I also have a PO-20 Arcade, which I love using, especially because of the chords. I also have a Korg Volca Sample but haven't used it much. Would you say that the PO-33 is more versatile than the Volca Sample, or be so kind as to offer any comments on how they compare? OR maybe that is just too big a question! Moreover, please keep up the excellent work.
Love your accent and voice. You are the swedish David Attenborough of synths!
Nice beats!
Thanks for this. The PO-33 is powerful, but quite confusing. I just got mine and am still trying to figure it out. It's amazing
ill buy this ASAP
Hi Jakob, thanks for the video. I seem to always learn something new (or a few things) when watching your videos. I do have a quick question, what would be the easiest way to do the data backups with the line in/out. As someone mentioned you could use iPhone voice memos. I’d get a fancy zoom recorder, but in the meantime I’m trying to think of a cost effective/portable workaround. Thanks again!
Seconded, this is the best vid about the PO33! Question: Do different patterns save the sound editing settings or are they universal? Like if I pitch a sample for one pattern will it be pitched like that for all other patterns as well?
Hi Jakob. Very nice video, explaining deeply how to operate this wonderful sound machine. Thank you so much.
My pleasure! I'm happy you found the video useful! ⭐️👊🏼
Yay same stanton SA5 all switch Allies & Allstars Beatdown with penny & Giles faderz... Spect!!
I purchased a PO-33 about 7 months ago. But a few days ago, for no apparent reason, it stopped turning on. I found him with a completely dead screen and couldn't resuscitate him. I did everything that is written on the manufacturer's website, but it did not give any results. I began to study this issue and it turned out that this is a common problem faced by po owners, it just stops turning on for no apparent reason. As far as I understand there is some error in the design or program. I wrote to the support service of teenage engineering, to which they replied to me that they could not replace my tool and could not repair it. They sent me a list of components so that I could order them and repair them myself. This is strange. Because absolutely nothing happened to PO, it just lay idle for a few days, and stopped working. If even the specialists of teenage engineering can't fix this flaw (judging by how often PO owners face this problem), why do they offer to fix it for me on their own? Then they stopped replying to my messages. I was very disappointed. I paid $ 90 for a piece that didn't even work for half a year. I was refused replacement, technical support, and no response at all. And the output sound of this thing is really shitty.
That's kind of what scares me about the more expensive pocket operators. Some of them (such as the PO-33) are approaching the price point of more expensive, more durable gear. I got one (the 20 Arcade) used that had 2 columns of defective LEDs, and that makes the sequencer nearly useless, since you need those to see which chords you have enabled/patterns are selected. Having exposed contacts like that really just sketches me out, and by the time you buy one of the cases, you might as well have just saved up a little more for a second hand Model:Samples.
I love the idea of the Pocket Operators, but for any of them but the cheapest, I feel like the build quality doesn't justify the cost.
OK, I'll buy one!
Thanks for the amazing vids on the new ones! I tried and failed to backup/restore... Stereo cable, but should the recording be mono?
Thanks a lot. I've been wanting to get back to basics, after having computers dead over and over. And actual productive creativity is giving way to hours of filing through VST Instruments and presents. Lusting over gear you can't afford, thinking you need it to put out the best music (Sound Quality) or to be taken as a "Professional". It's not a MPC or 404SP but they cost half your a months rent. It's packed with functionality and real time effects, what more could you want at that price. I'm buying one ASAP!
I get mine wed I'm buzzing love samplers lol now all need is to invest in a vinyl player and sampler some old records haha
The most comprehensive intro to the po-33 so far! I only didn't get where to store the data dump.. can i download data into my pc with just a simple stereo cable?
Hi Jakob, love your channel. Quick question, i got PO133 as fat as i know it has the same features of PO33 but it seems that the ‘note repeat’ as you explain on your video is not included for PO133, got any insight about thist? Happy new year btw peace
Sold!!!!
Them sure are some fancy new PO's.
Hey, nice review! Once data has been dumped to your CPU/MAC, it's saved as audio, correct? Which can then be manipulated in Ableton or any other software, correct? Thanks a lot!!!
Po-33 I think is the most fun I have With physical hardware unit .
Great video. Your video quality has taken a big jump up lately. Are you using a different video editing package?
I'm still using the same iPhone 6s to record videos with that I was using for all my videos during 2017. I did upgrade to a newer iPad and I started using LumaFusion last year too. The biggest difference are the extra mobile camera lenses I'm now using. I purchased a cheap set of three lenses and so for the past 10 vids or so I've been using a wide angle lens and a macro. I've got a video on my channel about the lens set. 😉 czcams.com/video/G7DHkuJuIL0/video.html

Watch the whole video 👌🏾 Big ups
awesome workshop Jakob, i’m thinkin’ about getting a PO-33, will it sync up to an Arturia Microbrute? (Microbrute CV sync out to the PO-33 but I want the PO-33 audio to be input into the Microbrute input with both PO-33 and Microbrute audio mixed together at the Microbrute output, both units synchronized. Would this work? Thank you very much!
Is there an easy way to find the end of that recording? In Ableton, even on the highest input level, I only get a visible recording line in the first 15 seconds, then the line looks flat. Since it tool so long to count upwards I left the room and now have a recording that is too long, but I don't know how much too long? Is there a strategy that makes this work? Does the recording end with a small blip in the line shown in Ableton? Because after 140 bars at 120 bpm I have a small dot.
You da man
the little gold contacts at the bottom of the KO, are those there so that people can mod the device?
Super
QUESTION: How do you turn on the metronome (Click). Any help will be great. Thanks for your help and this video!
Can you save a song from the po-33 on your laptop (macbook)? If so, do you need to buy an extra cable or is it included?
Hi mate. I dont know much about this stuff. Was wondering if you can use the ko 33 to sample own synthesised beats from microtonic and if microtonic might work with a low spec pc. 8gb ram but hardly a supercomputer and then use the ko 33 as beats with a hardware synthesiser.
Can you change the number of steps in the sequencer (e.g. 13 instead of 16)?
Hi Jackob. Love your work. So i can individually oitch every slice of a drum kit? And even automate that? Can i have some note over there and pitch it?
K.O doesn’t have a different scale modes like speak, but yes you can pitch each drum-slice and even automate it.
Any recommendations for guitar sampling?
Hello, what is your tripod for smartphone please? (looking it during the interview at 6:57) Thx
Goodbye volca sample !!!! you have been KO! :)
serious?(no ironic)
Why not sync them
@@AJC19811 Certainly possible. And there are a few more editing features in the Volca, but getting samples onto it is such a pain. The app that made it somewhat simpler is no longer supported on iOS and is unusable after OS 12. Bummer.
Hi Jakob, thanks for the indept video. Such a cool little sampler. I want mutliple! :) One question that's not clear: Can you select the input mic/line by pressing buttons or is it done automatically when you have a jack in the input?
The selection is automatic. Line in will be activated when you plug something into it and with nothing plugged in the mic is active instead. 👍🏼 And thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
Thanks, so if you have a jack plugged in for sync the mic is deactivated? It would have been nice to have a way to select the input. Or is it activated when receiving audio from line in?
Hey Jakob! At 0:43 which Synth app is that? Thank you for the info!
That's Waldorf Nave I'm sampling it at 10:28 - there's also a link in the description
What do you think about combining the PO-12 and the PO-33? Isn't the PO-12 a bit redundant since the PO-33 also has a rhythm section?
I also asked myself, maybe it dosnt need po 12
It would be a good choice as on PO-33 you have max 4 simultaneous samples including everything like drum and base sounds. More than that and they start to interrupt each other.
You can work around it to a point, ex. some drum samples combine a kick and a cymbal, or you can sample a complete drum track from a melody, but you will have more freedom with two units.
I bought PO-32 Tonic when it came out and use it with PO-33.
moar voices though
Clever done.thx ...thumb up & sub 🎼
... is there a mute function? BIG UP!
Hej Jakob!Does this one have scale and transpose like the po35?Thanks.
Nope, no scales or key switching.
I'm really having a hard time with the data dump. Backing up sounds and patterns through the line out into an audio interface using Ableton. I get an audio track that sounds like some crazy white noise. When I try to then restore that audio through the input on the PO33 its not working. I tried both using write+sound+play, and write+sound+record. I have been looking for a video that can demonstrate uploading and backing up patterns and sounds, and also re uploading that info to the PO33. Any reply would be greatly appreciated! Great stuff by the way.
I had a tough time with the backup and restore feature, I first tried using Audacity and failed before contacting Teenage Engineering to ask about other programs that might work. Teenage Engineering recommend Microtonic for backup, they suggested others had used iPhone voice memo as well. I did not have a smartphone to try this, so I tried Garageband instead being that it was an apple app. After some experimentation I managed to get full backup and restore. I went back to Audacity with what I learned and managed to get it to work there also.
Recording Backup
1. It does not matter what audio software you use to record your backup. Make sure no plugins or effects are active
2. It helps when recording backup to have the PO-33 at maximum volume
3. It also helps if the audio software input volume is set to record at around 60% (I tried recording at about 50% to avoid clipping and this only resulted at around 70-75% of data restored before error).
4. Record in 2 channel stereo at 16 bit 44,100, save without compression to either .wav or .aiff
Restoring Backup
1. It does not matter what audio software/hardware you use to restore your backup
2. The volume should be set at around 50% on the playback software/hardware. Set the PO-33 to about 6 (don’t know if this matters but the volume defaults to that anyway)
3. If you have a high cpu load (or your pc is acting up) this creates issues with the transfer of the playback, there is no buffer under run protection on the PO-33. If your cpu stalls AT ALL transfer will fail.
4. If your backups are not playing back smoothly try another device. I saved the .wav files to a flash drive and played them back from my blu-ray player with a line out from the headphone jack in my stereo amplifier to the PO-33. No stalling, No issues. (Transfer rate 1.4Mbps)
These are just my experiences with backup and restore on the PO-33. I am not suggesting that this is the only way, this is just what worked for me. The key is do not get discouraged, there is light at the end of the tunnel!
