This is so interesting because my mom is (ethnically) Punjabi while my dad is (ethically) Romanian Jewish. Punjab is where Roma genetics have been traced multiple times, while Romanian Jews interacted frequently with the Romani population in the country as well, as they both faced persecution and harsh stereotypes and then were sometimes imprisoned together in concentration camps when the Nazis invaded. It’s cool to learn how much overlap both sides of my family have had with the Romani even though neither side is ethnically Roma. For example, the Romani language (from what I’ve heard) sounds a lot like Hindi and Punjabi, especially numbers. I know that it’s not taught to outsiders, but I saw a video of two Romani women speaking and I could understand some words and the numbers were almost the same as the Hindi words numbers (although I don’t want to learn - I just thought it was beautiful to hear and was surprised I could recognize the similarities). However, my dad’s family had a lot of actual interaction with the Roma - my great-grandmother left Romania before the Holocaust, but when she was growing up in a small Romanian village, the Jewish community would apparently buy goods from the Romani when they passed through as they were also persecuted by the Christian Romanians. So there are pictures of her sisters with Romani girls, trying on necklaces together and later photos of just my great-grandmother wearing these skirts with unique Roma designs (which are interestingly similar to Indian Kashmiri silk patterns) as an adult in America. Hi I discovered your channel recently and wanted to say how much I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. I'm from the UK and know we have a Romani population. I have always been curious about Romani culture but it's so hard to find anything I can trust, there is so much disgusting racism just casually used wherever I look. Could you recommend any books or other CZcams channels that I can supplement your videos with?
I’m from the uk and am Romani myself and honestly Idk if it just come with being “different” but the amount of racism that goes on strictly in the uk towards Romani people is insane. Like I’m relatively light skin in winter but when I catch the sun I get so much darker to a point that’s it’s noticeable that I’m not white. It’s just weird to be in a place where I experience getting called dirty skin or told to go have a bath and in the next breath I’m told I’m not dark enough
@@russgardnon9284 My god thats awful. I am so sorry. Racists do love catagorising people so if you don't fit into their version of X nationality/race then they have an issue with it. Its so fucked up. What is UK Romani culture like?
For real, I’m American, and I studied in England for a year about 10 years ago and the sh** some people said to me point blank left me catching flies 😦. Like obviously we’ve got mountains of issues with racism, and it varies by region, but England was the only place I’ve been where people has just flat out said, “they’re bad people,” about a racial or ethnic group instead of trying to insinuate it- and then they even defended it instead of backpedaling! May good things and better times come your way 💚
I'm also from the UK and in addition to the gross stereotypes and totally unabashed racism towards our Romani people our government has now passed a bill that essentially criminalises the traveller way of life and gives police powers to seize their homes. It's called the PCSC bill and while it became known as the anti-protest bill the affect it's having on traveller communities and especially Romani people is barely given any attention. Unfortunately due to long unchallenged racism and the fuel added by harmful media representation there's a culture that allows this kind of discrimination.
@@Uffda.I’m American living in England (only ever in small cities like Cambridge and now the English countryside, but I love to travel around the country so have a wide knowledge of different regions), and in my experience the US is 10x worse when it comes to racism against black people than England and a few other European nations, but Europe in general is much worse when it comes to hatred of Romani people. There are many reasons why this is the case (and why their opinions are supported by negative experiences with them across Europe).
Same with Irish travellers. People think they're just Irish, but they have distinct dna from the Irish. They marry the British gypsies of Romani decent. My grandad was an Irish traveller.
This is a uniquely American issue. People in Europe know that Romanian does not mean Romani. If you said to a Romani person and Romanian person that they are the same - they'd BOTH slap you. Linguistically, culturally and ethnically, they are DIFFERENT. To the point when both groups actually give each other a lot of hate in Romania.
I’m definitely sure there are other countries that are not privy to different types of ethnicities across the world. Also there are many non Americans in the comments saying they did not know this.
The general Romanian people were pretty dang racist against the Romani people. I've enjoyed learning more about them outside of the racist stereotypes I was told.
I have never thought about the words being so close! Really enjoying your videos giving actual knowledge about a people I've never heard anything but degrading rumors about!
If you all have not heard Romanian- you must visit an Orthodox Romanian Christian church. The language is incredibly beautiful. A must do. Romani- I have never heard this language.
I really appreciate you teach me this. I will be coming back to this to get a refresher periodically. I have a hard time with words that sound similar sometimes, and these two get crossed in my brain. It really is helpful to hear it explained.
I always have to tie a word or concept to something tangible my brain can grab onto so maybe it'll help you. Romani - ends with I = individual because they're a group made up of many individual tribes another thing that helps me is think of it more in terms of a religion (it isn't but it's similar, in that anyone anywhere can be born Jewish if they're born into a Jewish family) Romanian - ends with N = nationality, which is what nation a person is from.
From what I know, romanian, originally româna, originates from the latin "romanus", since we are from roman and dacian descendance. Romans basically hid and/or erased most of the dacian culture, so the language is mostly lost, few romanian words originating from this language, the one of the Dacian Empire (Imperiul Dac). I personally don't know much words from dacian, if I know any. So yeah, romanians and romani are culturally tied by the land which they inhabit. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm eager to learn more.
I cannot stress how important videos like these are its amazing what you're doing just a few years ago google didn't know what our name was and even now Google is still confused but slowly people like you are coming out to talk and provide information for others ❤
In Italy they are called Rom because Romani is the word we use for people from Rome or the ancient Romans 😕 I always felt it was disrespectful to change a people's name just to avoid confusion in one's language. As for people from Romania, we use the word Rumeni, with an U, for the same reason (and I believe Romania was once called Rumenia? I'm not sure).
yes actually Romania, or the southern region of Romania, used to call itself "Țara Rumânească"(The Rumanian country), as well as the word Romanian with a "u" being used in english and french.
From Central eastern Europe and this always amuses me how others mix it up. But this was really helpful how to tell the difference to other people in English. ❤
I got curious and wanted to see what this person meant and straight up searched 'are roma, and Romanian the same' it instantly says no. So this person obviously didn't even Google it. Edit: I believed this video. I was curious to see what it said on Google.
OMG this gets on, my nerves LOL I am Rom, my Roma family was from Romania. We are Romani that lived in Romania. We more than likely do have some Romanian in our family but we are still Roma. The expressions when I try to explain this.... I can't LOL
The name "Romanian" probably stems from two things A) Romanians are ultimately descendant of Romans or locals that were assimilated into Roman identity (the latter is more likely) B) the Ottomans often called the Christians "Rum" which basically means "Roman" which also comes from the fact that the Greeks in the time of the "Byzantine" Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) identified as Rhomaioi until the 19th century which was when the modern "Hellenic" national identity was created from a nationalist project. There's also the added fact that the Balkans (with the exception of Wallachia and Moldavia) was called Rum Ili (Land of the Romans) often written in English as "Rumelia"
Thank you for explaining the connection. I live on the other side of the world in NZ, so it's hard to get access to reliable info here. I’m Romanian and I’m so disappointed that the Romani culture isn’t respected enough… people are either ignorant or malevolent when it comes to the Romani culture, to the point they assimilate it to other cultures instead of appreciating the complexity of this culture. I visited Romania and it's very obvious the difference between Romani Romanians and white Romanians (and many are mixed too!). You should share some photos of Romanians of both races wearing the stuff they wear daily, not the clothes for their festivals and people would see the difference. In the supermarket there I saw Romani girls in long skirts and cool scarves, and you dont see the white girls wearing that style.
Lol I live in Romania and I can confirm that what he says is 100% true. Mai sunt niște rasiști pe aici care încearcă să nege faptul că rromi sunt români, dar nu-i așa. He uses often the victim card which is a pity because takes away a lot from the accuracy of information and credibility... Roma did suffer a lot and they were incredibly discriminated but they were not by far this romanticized version he is trying to portray.

Ottomans did take slaves from romanian territories , especially young children, to indoctrinate and train them as janissaries (think about Vlad Dracul and his brother). Except that, although the romanian territories weren't under direct occupation, every leader was chosen by the Gate, and they had to obey and serve the Sultan. The tribute was collected by these named leaders and send regularly, or they would've been immediately removed. So, although Romanians weren't slaves in the way Romani people were, they also didn't have autonomy or possessions...they couldn't afford to feed their own families so, except the monasteries or the wealthy "boieri"….they didn't afford having slaves.
"Won is in wonder, that makes them the same word" is the energy I'm getting from that commenter's take.
lmao I love the "I already done googled it." Oh, ok, well I guess you told us. That changes everything!…Hey y’all, don’t listen to this guy that actually grew up in the culture. This other random person over here just googled it. They are now the one we should consult when we have any questions about Romani language, culture, and history. 👍 It was nice knowing you, florida.florian ✌️
Got lured in by Seb Stan, stayed for the lessons in etymology.
Why is it that when people are ignorant and wrong, they're so often _aggressively_ ignorant and wrong? You can't tell 'em nothin'... they already "did their research" and think they're the smartest person in the room hahahaa. 🙄😅
I tried explaining this to someone who had the g-word in their profile name and said they got the okay from their Romanian partner. From what I recall not all Romani people dislike the use of the word, or are okay with it in contexts like reference to names of animal species with the word in them, but I was like…that’s not the person to ask about it🤦♀️
Im surprised so many people didnt know romani were originally a migratory indian group
Thank you very much, this explanation was very patient and was very helpful
Bro you should add subtitles they are very important. You know sometimes people see the video without earphones and at public place , so those fancy subtitles help a lot.
Your videos are super interesting, keep them coming
It's the audacity of the commenter for me 😂 like, my friend...here is a real life Roma who did a whole video on Roma/Romani and their proper usage. And then you, who Googled something. The more I wash these videos and read comments...I appreciate you more. You're doing amazing, sweetie. -your Black American cousin😊
Thank you for educating us all, good sir!
If anybody cares, Romania is likely named for the roman empire, specifically the eastern Roman (byzantine) empire
People know that there, their and they’re are 3 different things, but still refuse to accept that Romani doesn’t mean Romanian. Even though they could Google it in about 2 mins, instead of arguing about which words are or are not slurs. 🙄🤷🏾♀️
The level odacity this person has is unimaginable...
Learn to spell
The way I'm crying at your videos bcuz only just a few years ago there was no real records to be found of who we are and now there is so much more being done and talked about considering our past and still nobody knows just how much of our history exists and still we are stereotyped and are stuck in that box of being racially profiled like how we've been continuing to be for years please continue educating and thank you
nah but the sheer confidence this person had to say "i already googled and researched it" to a person who probably knows more about THEIR culture and heritage than a f-ing search engine 💀
Im sinti and many people don’t understand that we are many different Roma people we have the Same language but different dialects ,
Same with Irish travellers.
Unfortunetly not everyone knows.
I am romanian and have been told by people FROM EASTERN EUROPE that everyone in Romania is a gypsy.
@@user-pi3hd2bt3f I think that's judt intended to be an insult
@@user-pi3hd2bt3f That's just Balkan banter. You gotta roll with the punches and call them a slur too.
I’m definitely sure there are other countries that are not privy to different types of ethnicities across the world. Also there are many non Americans in the comments saying they did not know this.
As a Romanian i’m sorry but this is not true, a lot of Europeans don’t know the differences
The general Romanian people were pretty dang racist against the Romani people. I've enjoyed learning more about them outside of the racist stereotypes I was told.
U hold great knowledge
I have never thought about the words being so close! Really enjoying your videos giving actual knowledge about a people I've never heard anything but degrading rumors about!
Very educational.
Romani - from Roma, which means "person"
Romania - from Rome
This is super interesting. I appreciate you educating me, thank you.
Romani - ends with I = individual because they're a group made up of many individual tribes another thing that helps me is think of it more in terms of a religion (it isn't but it's similar, in that anyone anywhere can be born Jewish if they're born into a Jewish family)
Romanian - ends with N = nationality, which is what nation a person is from.
I remember a time when I asked myself this question.
This is a dope series 😎👍🏾
I am so fascinated by the brave and enduring Romini people. God bless you always
that why native Americans and romani people wear and look like each other they are both come from the same roots India 🇮🇳 ❤ 😍 💖
Native Americans aren't from india? why do you think they're called "native" Americans?
@@Aresofthevoid they are call red Indians why is that?
@@willowjade6140 it's because Christopher Columbus arrived at America but thought he was at Indies, aka Asia. Also don't say red Indians, it's a slur
Native Americans actually descend from Siberia before they entered the americas
Sounds like the situation with the people of india and native americans.
However, somehow, those two names are related.
Please make a detailed video..... Your way of explaining is very Concise
People are thiccc!! You may have to do this a few more times, Florian. Love to the Romani people from the Jews.
OMG this gets on, my nerves LOL I am Rom, my Roma family was from Romania. We are Romani that lived in Romania. We more than likely do have some Romanian in our family but we are still Roma. The expressions when I try to explain this.... I can't LOL
I wish I seen this video last week thanks for explaining
Very informative!! Thank you for teaching 💖
Thank for your videos about Romani people. I love to learn about history and I always wanted to know about the Romani.
Thank you for sharing this! I love your videos, they are very informative
The name "Romanian" probably stems from two things
A) Romanians are ultimately descendant of Romans or locals that were assimilated into Roman identity (the latter is more likely)
B) the Ottomans often called the Christians "Rum" which basically means "Roman" which also comes from the fact that the Greeks in the time of the "Byzantine" Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) identified as Rhomaioi until the 19th century which was when the modern "Hellenic" national identity was created from a nationalist project.
There's also the added fact that the Balkans (with the exception of Wallachia and Moldavia) was called Rum Ili (Land of the Romans) often written in English as "Rumelia"
Thank you for explaining this..i didn't know..
That cleared out my own long asked questions! Thank you!😊
Same thing as with Moldova and Mordovia. European country and indigenous people of Russia
Your videos are so educational, great job
I hadn't actually heard the term 'Romani' before, only 'Roma'.
Good, succinct explanation.
Thank you for explaining the connection. I live on the other side of the world in NZ, so it's hard to get access to reliable info here.
FYI the audio on this short is very painful if listened to with certain headphones. Something about how the editing software has applied the cuts has corrupted the sound at cuts and turned it into a sharp ear-piercing whistle/squeak/crackle that is much louder than the rest of the audio.
Idk wtf I am here but I so never knew this I feel so smart now
Thank you for shedding light on this ❤
you are giving unknown history lessons to us indians
I’m Romanian and I’m so disappointed that the Romani culture isn’t respected enough… people are either ignorant or malevolent when it comes to the Romani culture, to the point they assimilate it to other cultures instead of appreciating the complexity of this culture. I myself didn’t know that the Romani people were enslaved in Romania because the education system didn’t bother to teach us something of this importance… I’m awfully sorry that this happened to your people, sending love to the all Romani people from Romania 💞
Same here! I m Roumanian , its the first time I hear that they were enslaved in Roumania for 500 years. More than that, my first instinct was to be bothered by him talking this way about my country:)))
Thank u so much for the clarification. Ive always related to the romani culture. It was presented to me as "gypsy" & "Romanian" culture so idk there was a difference
what is winter soldier doing in this video
not related at all to the topic on hand but the way I screamed just now at seeing Sebastian in your video
I visited Romania and it's very obvious the difference between Romani Romanians and white Romanians (and many are mixed too!). You should share some photos of Romanians of both races wearing the stuff they wear daily, not the clothes for their festivals and people would see the difference. In the supermarket there I saw Romani girls in long skirts and cool scarves, and you dont see the white girls wearing that style.
meanwhile me a greek purposely calling them the same just to fuck with both of them
Lol I live in Romania and I can confirm that what he says is 100% true.
I'm sorry you went through this but thats insanely cool that you're Chinese Indian and are Romanian. Whenever I visit I rarely see other ethnicities, it just makes you cooler and more unique
Yeah this is true. I am half Palestinian (Arab) half Romanian I live in Romania currently and people called me the G word as an insult due to my dark skin. I have heard this even with other dark skinned people Balkan people use this word as an insult

Please specify who enslaved them cause romanians were slaves in their own country at that time aswell
He uses often the victim card which is a pity because takes away a lot from the accuracy of information and credibility... Roma did suffer a lot and they were incredibly discriminated but they were not by far this romanticized version he is trying to portray.
Boierii și biserica erau proprietari de sclavi
Romanians(Români)were not slaves
Romanians were not slaves, you are talking about the peasant Romanians who were working for the rich Romanian boyars and treated like shit but they were not slaves to them. It was the same all over Europe, the peasant european class was trated badly by the nobility european class. You feel me, Andrada?
So like Romani is kinda like a Jewish person? Not a nationally but more like a more of culture and beliefs? I'm just trying to have something to compare it to make it easier for me to understand. I'm kind of an idiot.
Not really, we are more of an ethnoracial group kinda like African Americans if that helps you understand better
