- If you want a minimalist truck camper setup that provides a lot of comfort and practicality...then you need to look at Vagabond Outdoors.
Their campers are made of lightweight aluminum. They pop up in 30 seconds for quick camping. Have tons of headroom. Have a huge bed. Have tons of room in the truck bed for storage and are low profile for good fuel economy and trail driving maneuverability.
All for only $7250
www.vagabondoutdoors.com
Note: If you think $7250 is too expensive... price out an aluminum work truck topper with side access doors ($2000 to $4000) and a rooftop tent ($1500 to $3000) and you are already in the ballpark of this camper. Also consider that with the topper and rooftop tent you don't have the headroom this has and with a Four Wheel Camper or Palomino pop top truck camper you have zero truck bed use for hauling.
There is no perfect setup but this is a good option for guys who need to use their truck bed for hauling gear and have a comfortable camper for sleeping/camping.
Thanks for watching. Enjoy!

When I was a kid, my brother and I helped my father build a 'carpet kit' and storage for his 1982 Chevy C Model truck. It had a SnugTop. We built it with stuff we bought at a place called Home Base in Gardena California. I think that was in 1985... DIY in the day,
Great upload..
I wouldn't mind having a commercial snug top with the barn doors and high roof....and your carpet kit storage box!

Thank you for another excellent video offering an intelligent, practical, professionally constructed camping alternative that doesn't require a lottery win to be attainable!
This system has every advantage for those wanting a consistently reliable outfit that provides a great base camp which may then be outfitted to the personal tastes and role requirements of each trip, but still revert back to a pick up truck as and when needed.
I would prefer that the bed base was in sections as on the Ursa Minor Honda Element/Jeep Campers to give a more open, stand up internal living area.
Vagabond is just down the road a piece from me.
Good quality affordable US made stuff.
I used to work in Martinez. Lived in Vacaville.
Nice for sure I like them all
Awesome find
Nice setups, I havent seen these in action yet.
Nice channel!!!!! Excellent video, I have a truck this is exactly what I’m looking for!
It would be nice if the windows had awnings similar to a rooftop Tent. This way you could have ventilation during a light rain shower and also the awnings would provide a little more privacy and shade.
I dig these but I couldn't afford it or a teardrop so I picked up a used off road Evolution E2 pop up camper for 5k. It's gone to Sedona, Big Bear, St George, Willow Beach, and boulder Beach. I set it up as a base camp and take my mountain bikes or Titan off road. Works great.
Those are cool. Thanks for all the vids on this stuff!

The sliders on the red Taco are custom from a machinist in Sparks I believe he said when I talked to him.
Great post! Hope your enjoying living up in N. Nevada!
Heck yeah!!!! Best kept secret on the west coast
If the "base unit" had basic sliding screen windows on both sides and was around $5500, i would jump on it! It's EXACTLY what i'm looking for, for my prerunner. Just a little too expensive. Would really like to have that base model.
pretty great. Just checkout out the website, they have models for a tundra. would love to see you do a tour of one of those

I want one
Looks good! (Y)
These are a bit too minimalist for me, but they def seem to be very well made. A well-equipped FourWH Fleet on a long bed Tacoma is my dream rig.
Yup...FWC has a toilet, furnace, sink, stove, fridge and even a hot shower....but that all comes with a high price well above $7,250
@@mixflip Oh I know that. I priced out a Fleet on their website and it came to over $30k! But I don't think that's terrible considering everything you get, and they are built to last for many years of rugged use.
The downside of the fwc is the weight. Unfortunately trying to keep the weight down on Tacoma's or Colorado's has to be a priority. When you add weight you immediately feel the difference in the trucks performance.
@@albimoi84 Actually, FWC makes some of the lightest truck campers you can buy, unless you go to some really high end manufacturers that make specialized products. That said, pretty much any camper designed for smaller trucks will require chassis/suspension modifications to safely haul it. Probably the worst kept secret in the world of truck campers is that almost every rig you see is WAY overweight.
Any idea what the setup was for closing yourself in and locking up?
Nice presentation....man those are sweet!!!! and priced right too.
Better price, better rig: gofastcampers.com/collections/campers
Thanks for your coverage of the Vagabond campers...I never heard of them before...and I just live on the other side of the bridge from them!
I am surprised by the number of camper manufacturers in Northern California: Vagabond, 4WheelCamper, XP Camper, All Terrain Campers...something about the Sacramento Area.🤔
Like yourself, I am really a 4WheelCamper camper guy...that would be my dream vehicle camper...if I can afford it.😫 But these Vagabond campers fill in the gap between tent camping, and fully enclosed campers.
When you consider the price of a CVT, or Tepui car top tents, I think the Vagabond‘s $7250 base price, you get a lot more for the money, it is more versatile (as long as you already have a pickup truck), it is a lot easier and faster setup and break down, and access into the camper is easier (no ladders to fall off of when you got to take of business in the middle of the night)!
Yeah, when I am ready to buy, I hope I have enough cash saved up for a 4WheelCamper, but I have a feeling I will end up with a Vagabond pop top! (I guess it could be worse.)
My opinion is....FWC isnt necessarily better or the best. It's an option out of many options.
Vagabond campers has an advantage over FWC if you are very tall or want/need to sit up on the edge of your bed. That's where Vagabond outperforms FWC.
But if you like the feeling of more wide space inside then FWC wins due to the flattop design.
I would be happy with either one to be honest.
I'm saving up as we speak for a truck. Then a camper. Fun times ahead!!!
Good luck, on saving up for a truck + camper. I am in the same position myself. I just started scoping out what trucks to get, and right now I am thinking about the Tacoma double cab + long bed...but I just started thinking about this, so that may change when I see how much it will set me back.
Plus for FWC you got to look at beefing up the truck suspension, and doing some re-wiring to have the truck charge the secondary battery for use in camp (running the Dometic refrigerator, and personal electronics, etc.).
FWC may not the best but I got hooked on them when I used to camp awhile back with a couple of folks that both own FWC pop top campers. When we used to break camp in the morning, they’d be ready to roll in about 10 leisurely minutes. Meanwhile I would be breaking a sweat trying to stuff my sleeping bag, air mattress, and fold up the tent, while they would be leisurely sitting in camp chairs sipping hot cups of coffee, while waiting for me to finish packing up! After that, I decided I should look into these pop top campers.
I became a subscriber to your channel, and I look forward to seeing more camper brand reviews, and see what type of camping rig you finally decide on. Best of luck on your search!
What kind of suspension mods are needed to handle the extra 300#s these things add?
The price is madness.
Check prices on four wheel campers, flipac and Go Fast Campers....and report back what everyone else is pricing them at?
@@mixflip all way over priced
Thanks for the vid!

What’s the solar system on the higher end Vagabond?
Only thing I seen that is in the wrong place is the fan. It needs to be down at the foot so that air pulls across you while sleeping.
Agree to disagree - If you cook a lot in your truck bed, having it above the bed area is much more beneficial than having it on the very front of the camper. Also, being able to use the fan when the top isn't popped can only happen if it is far back.
I like these for what they are but $7500 for the basic model still seems pretty steep.
I know but everything is Expensive when it comes to 4x4's now
Zac C and everything is out of reach because of it.
Pop top truck campers are expensive toys.
The one in this video is $10k and it isnt much more as far as features go.
czcams.com/video/nTfySJyyNtI/video.html
Four wheel campers has one for $9k
These things are hand made in the USA. Its a niche market for folks with disposable imcome. There really isnt a cheap dare I say poor man's option other than buying some tools and materials and build it yourself.
Here is a link to a bunch of pop top campers including prices.
www.crowsurvival.com/pop-up-truck-campers/
Well consider it this way. A camper top is $2000-3000. A hard shell tent on top of that is another $2500-4000. So you're looking at $4500-$7000 already for that combo. This has the advantage of being a singular self contained unit that you can stand up in. Also these guys have extensively tested their units in Baja with high speed runs so it's sturdy af. Yeah it gets a little pricey with the add-ons but I think it's the best combo of quality, convenience, functionality, and price. You can still retain your truck bed for daily use too. Whereas with a Four Wheel Camper you completely negate any use of your truck bed on a daily basis and those are in the $20k-$30k range.

These are totally different and awawesome!!!! I totally love the fact that you can buy just the basic entry level base model. Then you can outfit it the way you want too. Cassette toilet, fridge, lithium batteries, solar panels, honda 2200 generator for hotter days to run a small portable a/c.
Any type of cabinets you want and configured the way you need it. Propane cooker top and small grill.
Screen room, awning attached or not.
You can buy tarp and poles for a tarp too. Outdoor shower pop up thing.
I saw one yesterday in Zion. So badass. I was gonna order the FWC but now, I'm not so sure.
I'm torn too.
Tacoma world has a couple of extensive threads discussing them. The threads may help you decide.
We were thinking of GFC....but goodness, the wait is too long! Now we're looking into this one or the Snap Outfitter's.
the price for outdoorsing is ridiculous, i m planning on making a commercial set up for pick up for less than 3000$ and a push in and push out minivan set up for less than a 1000$
Think Harder I’m not saying it is worth it or a good value but the reason for the high price for overland gear is it very specialized or custom and low run products. They have to charge a lot to meet overhead because they sell so few products.
@@MJ-zo5gb yes Indeed
Agree , R&D in China is brutal cost.. Reliable gear is what everyone needs, and it takes some effort and money to figure it all out, comparing stories and experience helps. A good product sale is rare , in Canada equipment needs testing.
Think Harder I agree a lot of this stuff is way overpriced it forces you to get creative and save some money.
Anyone know the weight of this compared to a Super Pacific?
How much does the base one weigh?
the awnings an extra 3 grand.method wheels fake bead locks
I learned what the word Vagabond means from the Metallica song, Wherever I May Roam.
I saw Metallica in concert in san Francisco years ago.
🤘🏻
Where I lay my head is home..
How much do they weigh?
Can you put it on a 1993 Ford Bronco?
Was there enough room for a 6-foot person to lay straight without their feet (over cab) hitting the camper?
If you get a chance, please do one of these featuring the AT Overland Summit. Thanks for the video.
Dave Lalande I’m 5’11, and when laying straight on my back, my toes touch the ceiling of the camper. The beauty of their design is you can slide the removable section back as far as you need. I move it back a couple of inches and my toes don’t touch. I love it.
What type of fridge is that?
These guys need to ramp up production, their build wait makes you look for other options like the Project M.
I agree. I can't wait a year, so I will have to look at their competitors. Although not in this class, I'm liking the Tufport fiberglass slide-in campers.
How does the Vagabond Drifter do in winds setup camping, I camp in the remote Nevada desert quite a bit, some nights it will get to 25-35 mph and not letup til 2am or so.
Looks like they need to hook me up with a sample model for video reviews. I cant answer questions without testing them lol.
My first time out, on the way home I pick camp site on eastern sierras. This was in May of last year. Winds pick up winter storm came in. My dog and I hunkered down for the night. we had 50-60 knot winds, NO PROBLEM. I love this simplicity of this camper. Opens in a minute! Comfortable to. You can stand up and stretch.
We are planning on a trip to AK from CO next year and considering this or the Snap Outfitter's. Have a full size Tundra and wondering if there's enough sleeping space? Is the camper built pretty solid and sturdy? Also, were you guys kept warm inside even when the winter storm came upon you all?
I really want one of these I currently have a gfc but based on my research this company ghosts the majority of their customers with some people waiting over 3 years with no communication. It got so bad tacomaworld closed all their threads and warns everyone of these guys which is a shame because their product seemed top notch.
Why not put that bed platform on a hinge like the Alu-cab pop tops? That way it could lift out of the way and the inner space is more usable in bad weather.
the bed platform is split so you can slide the plat form over the cabover in order to have full access to the bed
I just wonder how these Tacomas drive with all this extra weight. I had a 17 TRD o/r 4x4 and added a bunch of stuff and the constant shifting drove me nuts. I wonder if this is just something everyone deals with as part of the game. It was so bad, I just decided to stick with my LX470 which has a V8 and 4 speed. Much better, especially on hills/inclines
Id rather have the LX too, shifting gears is a flaw with the 3.5l tacomas, they don't have the low-end grunt like the 4.0l
Edit: turbo to the
Regear to 4.88 or 5.29 🤙🏽 gets rid of the “gear hunting” and helps with bigger tires, heavier loads

Not bad! $7,500 in Vegas will get you two nights stay with all the damn fees their charging nowadays! 😂
Ikr! $25 buffet was a real bummer to see.
Interesting. Did you notice any difference between these and the go-fast campers?
Yes. GoFastCampers has a high end aesthetic and build quality especially noted at the hinge area. GFC also uses a tube frame to build off of. I cant speak on the actual performance and durability differences since I would have to field test both to really know. But I'm guessing GFC is going to be the premium type option vs an affordable simple option.
@@mixflip GFC is actually less expensive than this unit.
You'd have to wait a couple years to get a go fast camper. And the sleeping area is smaller.
Too much hand waiving. Nice product but I'm kind of dizzy now.....
This would be perfect if you parked it in a town called Mayberry. But, not everybody has that luxury.
So, what about security, your out hiking and come back to your truck, and it's gone. My Napier tears
down, folds into a bag. Then it is locked inside my Nissan truck. Plus it was under $300 bucks. Go figure.
Insurance cuts you a check and that's that. Problem is, nobody can get away with driving/selling your truck. The camper would be useless to them, and your truck would be spotted and reported quickly. Most guys like to steal easy things that they can part or sell off. Just my $0.02 - A Napier tent doesn't come close to what this is
