    This is perfect for those of us with mid size and half ton trucks that don't want to push the GVR limits. Even the shell version of the slide in Hawk model with minimal options would only leave me a few hundred pounds of safe cargo capacity on my Tundra. Absolutely love this! Thanks for sharing.

    Great video man! Hey if the Four Wheel Camper folks are looking at these comments, please consider making all of your "options" like the heater for example to be able to work with other campers like this and you will have a much larger market. I have the AT Overland Summit camper and would be interested in some of these options for my camper and I know others would be as well.

I mean I don't know what else is out there LIKE THIS but you can almost get an entry level car for about $14k... seems like a lot for a shell and some foam ehh Would of been nice to see some full screen shots from different angles of the outside from 20-25 feet away ...

      It baffles me why they have not already made a product like this yet. I have been waiting for something like this for a couple years now but at a better price point. To me it needs to fill the gap between the Roof Top Tent world and pop up campers. Should be priced similar to the cost of buying a shell, rack, and Roof Top Tent in my opinion.

    • @dsgrayco
      @dsgrayco Před 4 lety +1

      It seems like alot. Fwc price for a shell camper was at that 9,000 dollar price tag about 10 years ago, when I first started looking at them. Now, yo get a shell camper, you will pay about 13,000. Full campers are about 25,000 or more.This cap/camper is much less. They are super high quality. I suppose you could buy a good cap for about 2,000(uninsulated) then a good roof top tent for 3,000, and a custom rack for 1,000. Then modify it all...its about the same cost. What did you want it to cost?

      Got an ARE for my 2019 GMC Elevation 6'7" bed with a 4-5" rise a few months ago, headliner, fold down front window, dog screens, and a bed rug, for $2500 and I'm ready to roll. Been looking at off-road cargo trailer conversions, and for a few grand more than an FWC M (and I do love the FWC campers) I'll have a 7X12 insulated trailer with torsion axle, battery, LED lights in and out, A/C w/heat strip, battery and charger, 30 amp box and cord, roof rack, 2-15x44 screened windows, and other goodies. I was considering an FWC, but then all the crap I'd need to live full time would be in a trailer anyway, so this seems to be the best solution, for me.

    The concept is great and would work perfect for my application. You basically get the utility of a camper shell, while being a cab over pop up sleeper with a bed. But the price just seems too high for such a basic package of aluminum sheet metal, styrofoam insulation, canvas material, hinges, and struts. IMO

  • @michaelparsons8815

    My guess the move to Cali was for economics. More shoppers out here. Buy in Cali and camp in Colo! I had a Hawk on two F-150's over the years. My first F-150 was 2WD then I bought a 4WD. I spent 297 nights in my Hawk camper over the 14 years that I owned it. I had many amazing trips with it. I've toured all over the west coast and made a cross country trip to Oshkosh, WI to see the big EAA air show. This video caught my attention as I'm a Pylon Judge at the Reno Air Races. Other than 911 and Covid, I haven't missed the races since 1970. My truck and Hawk camper are perfect for events like this. I have a great place to cook dinner, sleep plus I get to drive it out into the desert onto the race course and have everything with me. I've used it for the drag races in Bakersfield and speedweek at Bonneville. Last year I decided to upgrade. I sold my Hawk and bought a 31' Class C motorhome. I've discovered that the Class C can't go off road as good as my pick up. I'm seriously thinking of selling the Class C and buying a new Hawk. Four Wheel has a great product and it holds up well over the years.

    I really like the idea. With the pop down the back is still usable as a regular shell you can use between trips. It is also light enough to not hit your mileage too bad. With their standard one you either leave it on all the time (2x the weight) and the bed is mostly useless or you have to take it off and on every time and store it. I agree the price is too high. It is important to note a quality camper shell can cost over 2K.

    Your 75” and 68” width measurements are outside dimensions. We are taking about needlessly blocking 27” from the inside. A 12v cooler won’t fit in your new number of 8”. I would much rather have the space to work with on my own. If there is no structural reason, I’d like the option of not having the shelf or cabinet or settee,or whatever it may be.

  • @stevedeviney4368
    @stevedeviney4368 Před 4 lety +3

    For me, the bench/rails setup is a deal killer since it forces me to only build something that can fit below that, or fit something above. I don’t understand what purpose they intend to serve, unless it is to create a one-width-fits-all box with only the length to be varied. Leave them out, and I’m probably a very interested buyer. May now have to look at the AT Overland Atlas, although the Atlas and Summit both suffer from the same narrow top and slanted sides that inhibit sitting space.
    The Alu-Cab topper would be a winner for me, except that it doesn’t come in a full-size truck width with 6 1/2’ length, has no clear window option for rainy and windy days, and an odd two-part bed arrangement.

    Hey Mixflip did you see Draco the big red prop bush plane at the beginning of this video crashed a few days ago. A guest of wind flipped it during takeoff. Owner/pilot is fine, he crawled out but the plane is wrecked. Now the camper is cool. I'd like one for full size truck and the bare bones one is fine with me. Excellent for a hunting trip and whatever else you can think of. Price is maybe a bit high though. Pricing out a rack for the bed than a rtt is much cheaper. Of course this camper has some advantages so I get the price but otherwise I think it's a winner.

  • @bakhtiyarpakhirdinov2461

    Thanks for the great video. My only wish is if the rear door was attached to the roof (i.e. the whole rear side as a console) and went up together with it thus forming a bigger entrance and even a little more space under lifter upper gate. I am sure the gap in the middle wouldn't be a problem to be covered somehow. At the same time I guess such option would cause critical frame rigidness issues. Anyway there is a plenty of space for further upgrades and developments of the Project M. And also I hope the walls inside may have optional white or at least lighter colors - making the interior looking more spacy and light.

    I think that this is a great prototype, but too expensive. This unit, with something like an ArkPak battery box, and you're set. We could run our ARB fridge, my wife's 12v electric blanket, our 250w mini-space heater, and set up a couple Coleman camp chairs in the box when it's raining. Campers are very hard to find for midsize trucks and 1/2 tonnes nowadays, and despite people out there upgrading their trucks with suspensions, and airbags etc., these things only increase ride quality, they do not increase your 'LEGAL:' payload or GVW. Those are set at factory, and no matter what you say to the authorities driving through BC on your way to Alaska, no amount of upgrades changes your payload, they go by the number in your truck, and if you're over, the camper comes out. Remember too, that payload and GVW have to include your passenger weights.

    • @glinrothe1
      @glinrothe1 Před 4 lety +1

      Geography in Action This is a very good point, I have a 2nd gen Tacoma and would love the full slide in FWC, but there’s no way I’ll be under the GVW. Not with a full tank of gas, wife, kid, dog, mountain bikes and some basic gear. Not to mention if you get in an accident, and insurance finds out you were over weight, you might get screwed. Glad this model came out, at under 500lbs it’s much more realistic. However the price does seem high, there’s lots of other lightweight options out there now for midsize trucks.

    • @geographyinaction7814
      @geographyinaction7814 Před 4 lety

      @@glinrothe1 I'm glad it helped. Tacomas are great trucks, I just had mine written-off. There is no way that my Toyota would have carried 2/3 's of the campers that are sold as Tacoma capable. When I was looking for one, the guy at the RV place kept telling me that I could carry 1500 lbs which is way too much, the camper was 1700. I asked him about fuel, my wife, me, our gear, he just smiled and said those don't count. We were looking at a basic shell, 700 lbs, and that concerned me. Guy was trying to make a sale, simple. With your family and your gear, it's very tight. Long box Tacoma at best is around 1300 lbs, take your family and fuel weight off, you haven't much left. The FWC 'M' works, but expensive. I would look at a small trailer, or a roof-top tent system. Cheers!

    The whole purpose in the project M for me is to save space in my full size short bed.

      It will prob be more like 8 inches being this camper is 75 inches wide and your truck width is 68 inches or so wide. My guess is why they are making it like this is for storage, like a 12V cooler and small bins and most trucks have different width and lengths.

      Any hard shell rtt is going to be much more expensive, in the thousands of dollars. There are a couple of cheaper hard shells, but having been able to compare them in person, they tend to be really cheaply made, and wouldn't expect them to last more than 3 seasons.

    People who bitch about the price of stuff like this need to think it through. Is there $9000 worth of materials here? Of course not, but have any of you ever run a business? Costs are coming at you from all sides. If they’d stayed the hell in Colorado in ‘88 rather than moving to Cali, these might be a bit less expensive, but I don’t want to get political (although I just did; or did I get factual?). Anyway, the value in these all comes down to how much you’ll use it. If you’re just thinking “cool, that would be fun” but end up hitting the trails a couple times a year, it’s not for you. I really want a boat, specifically an express cruiser the wife and I could weekend on, but right now we’d be lucky to spend a half dozen weekends a year on it. I can’t justify $100K for that usage. Things may change. I would highly recommend anyone considering anything like this to do a rental first.

    • @stevebrown4734
      @stevebrown4734 Před 3 lety

      I am comparing this to the GFC. The GFC has the opening sides, but I like the way the whole roof pops up on this creating a more airy feel and more usable headrooom. The GFC is around $7500 so this is comparable for the added features of windows, the top, etc. I would put a batwing awning on it and maybe add the rear floodlights and electrical prewire, that's about it.
