Sir William Goes to Four Wheel Pop Up Camper | Factory Tour, How's It Made

  • I got the opportunity to walk through the Four Wheel Pop Up Camper Factory in Woodland California where they have been making aluminum slide in campers for pick up trucks in house since 1972 MADE IN THE USA!! Truck campers had been around for many years, even going back to the early years of trucks in the 1920s, but Dave Rowe came up with an idea for a super light weight pop up camper. It sure beat hunting in the Rockies with a Volkswagen bus, and it opened the path for a great deal more flexibility where an adventurous kind of person could expand his or her horizons to. The camper is truly a work in progress with new materials constantly being researched and studied to lighten, strengthen, and improve performance. The future brings more improvement, much of it suggested by owners who use the product on a regular basis, and many who camp away from the mainstream in harsh and punishing conditions.

    Enjoyed your four part Death Valley expedition-FWC tour, thank you. I roam the far west with a fully loaded Hawk model, but I think that I would also be happy with a shell model of the Hawk. My favorite option on these rigs is the furnace.

    It's odd that Mike Olds didn't mention the Swift model for 5ft bed when you asked him which campers fit the mid-size trucks. I thought maybe that meant they discontinued it, but it's still on their website. I hope they're not planning on dropping it because I plan on buying one for my Frontier Pro4x in a couple years.

    Any talk of them putting in a diesel heater, rather than LP heater and possibly a diesel stove? I really want to avoid the need to carry LP if I am already filling up the truck with diesel. Along with the diesel, solar would be my other source of energy and go with as much as possible along with a lithium battery bank to run an ARB fridge, all LED lights, chargers and such.

    • @SirWilliamGoes
      @SirWilliamGoes  Před 5 lety

      Not that I've heard. The solar they have already and id like to see a 12vt dedicated fridge too and larger solar. Not sure about the diesel heater tho

    Have an Acquaintance around here that has like a 10 year 4 Wheel Pop-up...he and his wife always take 2 tarps with them when they go and gather firewood. Like most RVs,etc,.....complete overpriced POSs :)

      Aluminum does not hold it's tensile over time/usage...that's the dirty little secret about it. Ever wonder why Planes have to be scrapped? Even under constant usage (pressure-cycles) and used WAY under the tensile/vibration strength thresh-hold...it weakens.....unlike steel.What I've noticed on their camper,the floor is the weakest link with 90-degree joint points, had the sidewalls and floor been welded together with cast/extruded rounded unions (to evenly spread the load),the walls and floor would not becoming apart.
      Their Toyota pickup does not help either....ever looked at the frame of a US Built Second Generation "Hilux" Tacoma to Present day? USA Spec Toyota pickups (Tundra to) don't even have fully-boxed frame anymore....the Truck itself is literally accelerating the pop-up coming apart. Funny part of the Hilux....every other country still gets the fully-boxed frame except the USA.
