  • If you like the idea of a 4x4 truck with a lightweight pop up camper in the bed that has everything a house has in a tiny package....and is affordable....and has a financing program....then you need to take a closer look at www.FourWheelCa...
Why do I like this camper? #1 its affordable at about $18k with everything...queen size bed, guest bed, dinette, hot water, sink, 2 burner stove, furnace, power bank, led lights, awning, portapotty and even a shower outside (inside too if you upgrade)....all for $18k.
#2 a camper can be moved from old truck to a new truck. Keep the camper for generations and just buy a new truck when it mileages out.
#3 Maneuverable on the trail. Try doing a U-turn on a mountain switchback with a trailer. Its easier with a truck with no trailer.
#4 pop up campers are lightweight, low center of gravity and quick to deploy when you are ready to sleep. Also easy to fit through trails with branches since the top is lower.
#5 aerodynamic and handles good on the highway compared to a regular camper. Easy to drive compared to a trailer. Trailers need big parking spots and can be a pain to back up if you aren't great at it.
#6 Did I mention they are affordable? Overland vehicles are often $50,000+ for a tough off road trailer to $100,000+ for a 4x4 van. I need to stay under $20,000 for my future setup. Thats tough to do nowadays.

I just watched your Overland Expo video the other day and loved it, but THIS is the video I needed! I'm a big fan of FWC and have been trying to decide between ordering a Swift for my Frontier Pro4x or to go with a bed rack/rooftop tent setup. I think I'm gonna save up for a Swift. I love the fact that you can still get all the creature comforts in such a small camper. I'd definitely get it loaded because I wouldn't want to grow out of it. If you can afford the price, I think the Swift is the perfect overland solution for mid-size short-bed trucks. Great video!

    • @mixflip
      @mixflip  Před 5 lety +4

I agree. The swift with every option seems like a great place to spend a few decades lol. It's a micro house on the back of your truck. Once I'm settled after the move....I'm giving these guys a call.

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 Před 5 lety +2

@@mixflip I priced one out with the options I want and it came to $29,000! So it's going to be 2-3 more years before I can swing it, but I'd rather wait than go into debt. My mind is made up at this point, but the waiting will suck! Maybe I'll see you on the trail one of these days lol

@@dlg5485 Do some long hard thinking about the options you want. I ordered a Fleet for my Tacoma and at the last moment decided to scrap the sink, stove and fridge. The more I think about it now the more i'm glad I went without water or plumbing especially. Takes up a lot of space, can freeze, and is expensive. I went from a 25000 dollar setup to just under 20k. I'll get a top opening fridge I'll place where the sink and stove would have normally gone, saving money and efficiency. I skipped the solar install also, but had it wired with a controller, so I can do it myself or have a local company set me up, which will be cheaper. Same with an awning, I have my own but if I didn't I would buy one for a fraction of the cost FWC charges and either install it myself or in my case now have the camper installer/dealer install it, as they know the camper.
Point is you can shave off some $ and I'd go the opposite you said by upgrading later with anything you might want, which is an option. FWC can install sink, fridge, stove, dinette even, AFTER you already own it. So I'd go lite at first, last thing you'd want is to be stuck with something you payed an arm and a leg for and that's weighing you down.

@@MikeDonner I already know what I want, so I'm all set. It's not difficult to protect your plumbing and other systems with a little forethought. I want a camper with comforts. If I wanted an empty shell, I'd just tent camp and save myself a ton of money, but that's not what I want. Different strokes for different folks.

Mixflip you do good reviews. I watched your reviews for a
long time now. I am about ready to go full time and stay mostly off the beaten
path, off the grid, or overlanding whichever name anyone wants to attach to it,
someone will make an issue with whatever is said no matter what. I do not care
if it is Dodge, RAM, or Fiat. I have already sold my house and most of its contents,
staying in a small apartment for now. I have looked at the Four-Wheel Campers (FWC)
and have looked at teardrop campers for a long time now. I want to stay as far
away from tents as possible (LOL). Your right as far as FWC go for overlanding purposes
they are not as expensive as many think, but it is probably true that many
cannot afford them, or want a cheaper option, or to build their own. I wish
everyone luck in whatever option they choose.
Also, many overlanding trailers are much more expensive than
the FWC, pushing $50k. My favorite is the “Bean” trailer, which is a startup
company just in the last year or so. I do not remember if you did a review on
it or not! “Bean” is kind of a strange name (LOL), I understand the owner came up
with the name as he called his daughter Jellybean, so Bean trailer it is. The Meaner Bean, the Mean Bean, Classic Bean,
and the basic Bean. The Meaner Bean being the most off-road capable. All the
beans are a one-piece fiberglass construction. Bean company did a review where
they took a sludge hammer and beat on the side of the trailer with no damage to
it. Was impressive to me, this trailer can take a beating on the trails and keep
going. If you get the chance do a review on Bean trailers. You can google their
site and check them out. Pricing is on their website, as you can build or mix
and match the trailers the way you want them.
I like the idea of an off-road teardrop trailer because once
you get camp setup, then if you forgot the beer, you can jump in the truck and
head to the nearest town, get the six-pack, come back and camp is still set-up!
FWC you would need to take your camp down, go to town, come back and set-up
    camp again (LOL).
With the FWC, I would still pull a trailer for all the
things I cannot carry in the camper. With the teardrop I am still pulling a trailer,
so why not just use the truck bed to carry the extra things. Both are on my
mind, but I am leaning more towards the teardrop.
Again, you make or do good reviews, keep up the good work.
    One veteran to another.

This looks like an easier and less expensive way to get into Overlanding. Yes it doesn’t look as cool as a bed rack and rooftop tent. Maybe some of the utility of having the bed open is lost but with some of the options like a batwing awning you can get some of the usability. I like what you said about having a place to cook and chill while kids went snowboarding 🏂. I’m glad I came across your video. It is getting me thinking.

      @mixflip  Před 5 lety +3

I hear that comment alot. Just build it yourself and save a ton of money. That's easier said than done.
What if you dont have the tools? Now you have to buy them. What if you dont have the space to build a camper? Now you have to drive to your parents house or brother or sisters house or friends house and impose on their time and space which also extends the build time since it's not next door. Just use your backyard...many people dont have side access or rear access or both available. 4wheelcampers are made of welded aluminum....I guess I'll save money and use wood.
Then there is the handyman skills. Everyone isnt great at using power tools, measuring accurately and cutting straight lines. At least not the 1st try.
Then the time. Everyone doesnt have the time to build premium quality products in their backyard. It's worth it to some to pay a little cash for a journeyman to produce a quality product. Our local economy feeds its kids and thrive when tradesmen have jobs.
Then there are those who broke their backs at their job for 30 years and built a nice pension...and have no desire to lift another hammer. They want to have fun with their retirement. They have the money and dont mind treating themselves to a decade of comfy camping in a quality product.
I could build my own AK47s ...but sometimes I want my AKs made by old world craftsmen.
      That's my 3 cents anyway.

If you wish to put me in the category of being a easily bruised egotistical then I think your grandfather and I would have a good laugh. Landscaping is honorable work and I don't get why you would think carpentry or welding is more worthy. Any work done right is honorable and you should honor your grandfather for such. As far as him being good at Killing during WW ll, many men come home from war and just want a simple life so perhaps that is why he chose landscaping. I salute him for his service. Don't know if it would be allowed in some bear areas like in Yellowstone. With the top down, you could not use the stove, and the sink would be iffy, but you could sleep in the lower bed. The roofs can hold around a thousand pounds of distributed weight like snow, and the roof can easily hold solar panels. The roof has internal composite panels at each end that lock in place to support the roof. They offer solar packages or you could do your own. See their site, they answer many questions.

And the vinyl windows and the cheap stabler shocks to help with the lift is laughable at best. Save your money and buy a used 1980's SunLite or a 1990's Palomino....even if you have to fix it up a little it is by far a better buy...

    • @mylifeisdoghair9708

You're wrong. 4WC are extremely well made. They do chose some materials for their light weight, like parts of the cabinetry and sheeting. The gas struts aren't cheap, they're 100lb struts. There are 4WC from the 1980's that are still in service today, and all 4WC weight about half of what their Palomino/SunLite/NorthStar counterparts do. The DOT sticker on my Hawk says 695lbs. Those heavier campers are fine, there is nothing wrong with them - But these are a completely different class of camper (4WC, All Terrain Campers, and Phoenix) and there is a reason they are more expensive. They are made with a welded aluminum frame and with low weight and trail durability in mind. Palomino/SunLite/NorthStar are not, they are built more for comfort and space.
