The big question mark that everyone seems to be forgetting is, do we know for certain that the Pistons would have still acquired Rasheed Wallace later in the year if they drafted Carmelo? Part of the reason they traded to get Rasheed Wallace was because Darko flopped so bad. If the draft pick that they made in Carmelo ended up working out there's a good chance they'd never end up feeling pressured to trade for Rasheed. And even with Carmelo, the Pistons don't end up winning a single ring without Rasheed Wallace on that team during those 2 seasons they made it to the finals. Rasheed was instrumental for them to get over the hump.

There's a reason why Dumars didn't want to draft Melo, because he, Larry Brown, and the core team members knew the kind of player Melo was, a ball-stopper who restricts ball movement as well as a subpar defender. Larry Brown was also notorious for not wanting to play rookies, so they didn't want chemistry issues due to clashing between Larry Brown and Melo, and the clashing would likely have happened with Melo seeing his draft classmates like Lebron and Wade getting playing time and being focal points of their respective teams while Melo would have had to sit on the bench much more.

Looking back on Carmelo‘s career it is sad that he isn’t a multi time champion and MVP . It all fits a talent like him is rare but he did make a few mistakes in his career in preventing him from being successful

Carmelo is 100% right. History would of been different. Pistons 3 to 5 NBA finals and winning at least 3..

He would’ve been a champion at least two rings ! Pistons was no joke back in day

Carmelo was on a Denver team that had true talent and fell to the Lakers (Kobe) in the WCF. What I saw from Carmelo on the Denver teams or for his career, is someone who didn't put the work in like LeBron or Wade. One of the most polished offensive players I've ever seen but lacked defensive skills and didn't put the effort in to ever become a well rounded player. I will say, Denver needed to do more to get another piece around him. AI wasn't the answer. Billups was good and the leader of the teams with Carmel but that was clearly not enough. Ultimately, I can't see Carmelo winning multiple titles on his prowess only, he's not a leader and is a one way player at best. People hate on LBJ for his finals losses but he routinely gets his teams (trash or not) to the finals. What has Carmelo ever done in comparison? Carmelo is a great offensive player but to say he would have multiple titles if he had been drafted by the Pistons is just ridiculous.

Most Black folks who only listen to Black artists or even Mexicans or Filipinos don't get metal music. Thinks shouting is noise. A lot of it is very melodic like Iron Maiden.

As a Piston fan I always wonder why the front office switched their decision at the last minute to select Darko over Melo.

Man listen…in Joe Dumars defense…I’m from Detroit and I remember this time like it was yesterday…Tayshaun Prince balled out in 2002 so we didn’t need to draft melo and I’m glad we didn’t to be quite honest…Carmelo Anthony wouldn’t have came from behind and blocked Reggie miller’s layup to get us to the championship 🤷🏽‍♂️…Theirs no guarantee we would’ve won the chip with him…Put some respect on Tayshaun Prince’s name period!!!

@MX Bro what are you talking about Tayshaun Prince was an elite defender are you kidding me?! He gave each and every one in the league problems defensively. He had a 7" wingspan dude and he was an iron man that man played in all 82 games his entire time here in Detroit. All Melo can do is iso and score he has no defense at all he would've been a bad fit here and I believe Joey D knew that. I'm glad we passed up on em because I don't think we would've gotten the chip with him I'm sorry.

The better question is who would start Tayshaun Prince or Melo? That Pistons team was all defense I don't think the chemistry would've worked

This Melo conversation have so many angles, but one for me is always that 07 collapse in the eastern conference finals pistons when it seem Bron went nuclear. I wonder if that series would have played out like it did or would Melo have have got the best of Bron and we get another pistons and spurs 07 finals matchup and how would the big 3 in Boston have played out.

Melo would have developed a whole new mindset. You can do it alone but Vets especially like them? Can definitely make a difference.

So many things would've had to change that year. Or BEEN different, I should say.
1: Had we drafted Carmelo, we may not have traded for Rasheed Wallace.
Why? We have been better during the season, and not felt we needed him (even though we did)
2: Had Carmelo been in the game at Indiana, Tayshaun would have never made that block on Reggie Miller.
On the other hand, we may have been ahead by much MORE in that game with Melo, which means the block wouldn't have even been necessary.
There are other "what ifs" with this, but those are the first two that came to mind.

In some alternate reality The Pistons Draft Melo they beat the Spurs Pistons Lose to Cavs in Game 7 of a Gladiator fight in 07, In the 2010 season Melo Joins Heatles instead of Bosh and They Win 4 finals in a row causing Lebron to return To Cleveland having to battle Miami, Chicago and Indy with a PG24 who never has a leg injury
