Low Points for the Pittsburgh Penguins

  • I could have had Jagr as the lost asset, but that was also about the team being cheap and nearly moving out of Pittsburgh.

    Ran into Mark Cuban leaving a Stars/Pens game back in the 07-08 season. We were walking down the stairs after the game (Pens 3-2 in a SO, Crosby with the winner) and I got to have a 2 minute conversation with him because it was rumored that he was going to buy the Pens because he was a Pittsburgh native. I asked about the rumors of him buying or Mario moving and he looked at me and said quite frankly that Mario was just floating his name out there to get the city on board with a new arena and that Mario would never move the Pens from Pittsburgh. Definitely on my list of top 3 conversations I've ever had, and was surprised he entertained me. I told him he ought to think about it because the Pens were going to win the Cup in the next couple seasons. Also love that jersey, its much better than the RoboPens home jersey they wore during the mid 90s-2000 time frame.

    The Howard Baldwin owned Penguins made the playoffs every year during his eight years as an owner, including a Stanley Cup win. But Baldwin and his ownership group had amassed a massive player payroll and played in an aging arena. Players were asked to defer their salaries, but financial pressures caught up with the owners and they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1998.
    Mario Lemieux was retired and the team still owed him $35 million in deferred salary. The ownership mortgaged the future to keep the small market penguins competitive.

      I mean look at who they drafted with those picks though. This doesn't just include first overall picks btw, just look at all of their "good" picks in the last 10 years. Taylor Hall (future league MVP), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (solid #2 center who's consistently produced), Jordan Eberle (great scoring top 6 winger), Oskar Klefbom (top pairing dman), Darnell Nurse (top 4 dman, who's still growing), Leon Draisaitl (art ross winner, probable 2020 MVP), Connor Mcdavid (generational talent), Kailer Yammamoto (top 6 winger whos still growing), Evan Bouchard (low end NHL level dman whos ready to make the jump to the league next season). See my point? This doesn't even include all the other players they've drafted outside the first round that are great players, and some other first rounders that I haven't mentioned yet. (Puljujarvi, Bear, Benson, Lavoie, Jones, Marino, Khaira, Gustaffson, Rieder, Ganger, Petry). The only real BUST that the oilers have had in drafts has been the obvious pick in Yakupov. As well it's uncertain right now whether Puljujarvi is a bust yet. The oilers issue isn't drafting. It's asset management and trading. They consistently make terrible trades, their value in drafts is always bad, and they have suffered because of it. The oilers are good at drafting, just TERRIBLE at putting a team around those drafted players. You hate to see it. I really think that with the right management the oilers are ready to make that next step. Imo all they need now is another top 6 winger and an actual reliable goalie (maybe target Jarry/Murray at the expansion draft?) and they can really start to compete.

    @penguinsfan251 Před 4 lety

    Any jersey with the Pigeon is usually despised by the local faithful.
    It is frequently misrepresented that the Penguins were bankrupt twice. It happened once. In 1975, the Penguins were put in receivership by the IRS because the owners did not pay the withholdoing taxes. Had the Penguins beaten the Islanders in 1975, the ticket deposits in escrow for the third round would have been used to pay those taxes and no receivership. In the 1974-75 season the Pens had the 5th best record in the NHL and attendance improved significantly. The city built the Section E balconies in 1975. This and Michel Briere's death were two of the low points early on.
    Management decided to build the team from the ground up after the 1982 loss to the Isles. A team of patchwork veterans never wins anything. The bad attendance in 1983 and 1984 was indicative of the massive steel industry layoffs that clobbered the area. You want a low point? The 1987-88 Pens had a winning record and 81 points - and finished last in the Patrick Division. They had a better record than six playoff teams that year. Another low point.
    Baldwin never had the money to operate an NHL team. He overpaid salaries and had no plan to replace the Civic Arena, which was obsolete in the 1980s. There was no problem with attendance or TV ratings. It was all Baldwin. The Pens could have been in on the new stadium/ballpark, but Baldwin begged out. Low point. Baldwin bought a team with a solid minor league system and wrecked it. Low point.
    A previous Pittsburgh mayor, Bob O'Connor, wanted the Penguins to leave and wanted an NBA team to come here. This is why there was no impetus to get a new arena until after he died. The Penguins put together a deal where Isle of Capri would have paid for a new arena - but the board appointed to issue the gambling license gave it to Don Barden - who managed to lose money operating his casinos. Low point. Who turns down a free arena? A bunch of dolts appointed by Fast Eddie $pendell, the tax raising lying sack of $**t from Filthydelphia, that's who.
    So, the noisiest bunch of anti-Penguins whiners come from Filthydelphia - who lost the A's, the Warriors, nearly the Eagles because Leonard Tose went broke gambling in Atlantic City - the city that went broke in 1990, who had its school system seized by the state not long after, and foistered Eddie $pendell on the rest of the Commonwealth - and Washington, who needed Penguins fans to sell out their home building. Hey Caps fans - 2-9 all time in the playoffs. Don't you miss Joe Gibbs?
    One other point - many NHL teams have faced lousy attendance - the Red Wings during the Dead Things era, the Blackhawks before Bill Wirtz died, the Devils (why does the NYC metro area have three NHL teams?) the Islanders after the cup years ended, the old Minny North Stars to name a few. Even the Blues were in bankruptcy and were going to be moved to Saskatoon. The Sabres were in bankruptcy as well. Bankruptcy had nothing to do with attendance.

    In 1998 the wonderful people running the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania allocated hundreds of millions of dollars for stadiums for the Pirates, Phillies, Steelers (with Pitt football) and Eagles (with Temple football). When the Pens didn't try to get in on that is puzzling to me. It wasn't as though they weren't looking for a new building at that time. I believe just 3 years later Allegheny County voters rejected a plan to increase the sales tax to pay for a new building. The money eventually came from gaming revenue but I thought they were gonners in 2007. There was a proposed casino w/ arena whose bid was rejected and right after the mayor of KC said Christmas had come early. I really thought they were done.

    I’ve been a huge Pens fan ever since I was in grade school, which coincided with Lemieux coming into the league. The only time I’ve ever cried after any game, any sport, was after David Volek scored in game 7 OT in 93. My main point of this comment is that I’ve seen some BAD Pens teams in my lifetime. Sure we’ve had incredibly talented teams, but a lot of people don’t remember how ugly things were at times on the ice. For example, in 02-03, they lost 19 games in a row. Zigmund Palffy said he’d rather sit at home than play for this team (and he was playing with Lemieux!!) There’s a reason they picked first or second in the draft 4 years in a row. The Crosby lottery was pure luck though.

Some depth can be good sometime...Also the mini drought of the beginning of the 2000 was pretty hard to live throught...Also imagine long term if Angelo Esposito played like in the international level or the junior level...Sad end...

That's very clearly what they are going for. You win as MUCH as you can right now with Sid/Geno and then after they are gone you deal with the rebuilding then. Hence why they trade their first round pick basically every year and they continue to get established players while giving up prospects in trades.

      Closer than you think... Gretzky averaged 1.921 points per game. Lemieux averaged 1.883 points per game which included his last 2 seasons when he could barely skate; he only played 36 games in those 2 seasons and was a shell of his former self. Until then he was averaging 1.925 points per game. If he had played as many games as Wayne, it would have been very close. And keep in mind, Mario had to sit out a ton of games during what should have been the prime of his career. Who knows what that points per game average could have been. Of course, we will never know, but I do believe he would have been very close to 99's records.

      The games Mario missed were in the dry ninties. I can't see him hitting the same kind of points there, as in the eighties. There is a reason why Gretzky slowed down, and it's not only due to age.

    Mario would’ve past Gretzky in all categories had he played as many games. Before he retired the first time, Lemieux had a ppg avg over 2. Had he been healthy and played at 100% I’m not sure what his ppg would’ve been

    • @joellitt-jukes9715
      @joellitt-jukes9715 Před 4 lety

      True, but you can't live your life arguing and debating hypothetical situations. Mario "would have" passed Gretzky if he didn't get hurt. Yeah. Maybe. But at the end of the day. He didn't pass Gretzky. He wasn't even close; and he DID get injured. So. Tough shit. You can't debate what "might have" or what "would have" happened, you have to use what DID happen; and what DID happen was Gretzky has well over 1000 points more than Mario, he still leads the NHL in all time goals (although Ovi is coming lmao) and he still has countless scoring records, whether it be playoffs, regular season, goals, assists, PPG, whatever it may be. If you want to try and say Mario "would have" passed Gretzky then I could just as easily say that I "would have" been an NHL player if I was a couple inches taller. But at the end of the day I'm not an NHL player and Mario didn't pass Wayne. See my point? This is coming from a Pens fan btw, no bias here.
